Guardado's serves up authentic, flavorful dishes from Spain and Latin America, in a casual and inviting atmosphere, in the heart of Bethesda, Maryland. We now offer Brunch on Sundays

Chef Nicolas Guardado and his wife Reyna opened Guardado's Restaurant in 2007. Guardado brought with him a wealth of experience, rising through the ranks at local-area tapas restaurant Jaleo to a seasoned head chef.

Now, he is infusing that knowledge into his own restaurant, as well as adding some popular Latin American entrees and some traditional dishes from his native Salvadorean background to Guardado's extensive menu.

  • "The gazpacho was uninspired, and the tapas meat dishes were BIG hunks of meat covered in pretty typical sauces. After our food arrived, the waiter did not visit our table again until it was time to try to sell us a dessert, then after delivering the check he took forever to pick up our credit card so we could leave. I would not visit again--there are much better choices available for Spanish cuisine."

  • "We love Guardado's and eat there regularly. It's like Jaleo, but with better food and no hype. The service is excellent, and the tapas always top-notch. We have our favorites from the regular menu, but all of the specials we've tried have been great as well. It's family-owned and operated, and we like that it feels like a neighborhood spot where we're always welcome. The interior is not glamorous, but it's comfortable, and not too noisy unless the place is really crowded. Good drinks, and the food comes quickly. Highly recommended."

  • "There are many great dining choices in Bethesda, so why do I keep returning to Guardado's? The answer is simply that the food is really good. Whether you plan to order a dinner or a few tapas you will certainly find making choices difficult, but you will be rewarded no matter what. The service is friendly and efficient. The price is quite moderate. Guardado's is a regular stop during my travels to Bethesda."

  • "I took my 4 senior staff. The owner, Reina, who greeted us, made an unappropriate remark about my physical look. We arrived during happy hour, and one of my staff asked for the list of coctails for the happy hour. Reina rushed my staff telling her that it is on the manu and walked away. It took a long time to get our drinks. The tapas we ordered arrived cold. The sea food paella was tasteless and cold. Nobady came to ask us if everything was fine. When we received the bill, the staff who ordered a Cosmopolitan drink, noticed that the price has been charged as regular and not as a happy hour fee. When we talked to Reina about it, she insinuated that my staff was "stupid" to believe that a Cosmopolitan drink will be so inexpensive."

  • "Found this one on Open Table, and after reading the reviews, decided to head over to Bethesda for a last minute Friday night dinner. The place is small, but the large groups left after their happy hour gathering time. That left families and couples who like to chat and eat in a small (but not too small) eatery. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to help you decide on which of the many tapas to order. The items we ordered were yummy, not overly salted as in other tapas places, and the price is less than similar tapas restaurants. Definitely headed back to Guardados, and recommend it to others."

  • "We dined here before a show in Bethesda and were impressed with the quality of the food. We tried a variety of tapas ... The mussels were fresh, flavorful and abundant ... Scallops in lobster sauce and shrimp with garlic were also impressive. The pork was the only tapas that failed (dry meat) but the vegetarian tapas were also great, as was the smooth version of gazpacho (not chunky). I'll be coming back here!"

  • "When we want to celebrate with friends, eat great food and have a laughing good time, we head to Guardado's. This last time we decided to take our three kids (6 and 4) to celebrate our anniversary. With tapas you know you can always find something everyone will like. My kids gobbled up mussels and octopus. They loved the papas fritas. And the staff and service was friendly and helpful. We always have a great meal and a great time there."

  • "We wanted authentic paella and got it, although it was slightly under seasoned. Lots of fresh seafood. We also had excellent tapas. Wine by glass selections were limited, but I my Spanish red was very good. Service was informal but attentive. Ambiance -- not so much, but reminded of a neighborhood restaurant in Latin America. We were just an older couple, but there were families with ages from young teens to grandparents enjoying meals."

  • "The place was rocking for Mother's Day; fortunately the staff was able to keep up the pace admirably. No long waits or missed orders. Mamacita and I enjoyed our meals very much. Fajitas and lomo saltado (without fries? First time I've seen that.), with omelet (tortilla) tapa to start. Tile floors ensure a din when the place is as crowded as it was, making conversation a challenge. She wants to return very soon to do a tapas meal."

  • "I love this place -- family-run, friendly, offer great deals every day and on special days (I got the $4 premium margarita and 2 of the $5 tapas specials on a Thursday), and best of all, the food is great. The ceviche is wonderful -- I've introduced it to many friends! And one friend in particular will never leave before getting his 3 leches cake! We often go before rehearsal and they are great about getting us out on time. "

  • "We love Guardado's -- it is definitely a neighborhood gem, although we drive all the way from Fairfax. The service is always friendly, professional, and competent, and the ambiance pleasant. Best of all, though, is the food -- wonderful tapas and paellas. Although the wine list is relatively small, the selections are superb and fairly priced. This time, in addition to several tapas -- croquetas (two orders!), endivias, pinchitos, and calamares fritos -- we also ordered an entree of vieiras (sea scallops) in a lobster sauce. They too were delicious -- cooked just right and the sauce was not heavy. Guardado's is truly a gem."

  • "Excellent tapas of all sorts, with a former chef from Jaleo making his own fine mark in a less congested setting. Seven of us had attended Imagination Stage around the corner, so we could park once in the adjoining garage, walk to the restaurant after the performance and have a lovely dinner with no hassle. The four kids had never had tapas but ate everything in sight, and the variety of food allowed them their own preferences with an ability to experiment. The service was excellent. Our amazing server, Cindy AKA Lola, kept full dishes and drink refills coming while whisking away what we were done with. The cerviche was only so-so, but all else was amazing. "

  • "Although the service wasn't the greatest (the server forgot to bring our wine and someone else found it for us), the food more than made up for it. The black rice paella was particularly outstanding, with perfectly cooked chunks of chicken and andouille sausage as well as shrimp. The "tapas" are generously sized, more like half-portions, and three per person are more than enough. We went on a Tuesday, so bottles of wine were half price. The sparkling rose we chose was semi-dry and very pleasing. Given the very modest prices (for Bethesda), we expect to be back many times."

  • "Been here many times, while the menu is not as vast as La Tasca or other tappa restaurants, everything served here is always very good. Service was a little slow after we finished plates and took a bit for dessert and to get the check but we were not in a big rush so no issues. The Tres Leche cake for dessert is a must. No other cake has come close to this one at other places."

  • "Guardado's is a cozy, not fancy, family-owned restaurant in the Woodmont triangle section of Bethesda, with easy parking across the street in a county garage. We enjoyed sharing a variety of tapas, although they also have entrees such as paella. Reliably good food, and I love their latte and flan. I believe the chef-owner trained under Jose Andres."

  • "We had tapas rather than an entree, which we have done with other area restaurants. The waitstaff were very knowledgable in their recommendations for the dishes as well as the accompanying wine. However, we were very surprised at the very small tapas. We had intended to make our meal of them but the price/portion made us hesitate to order more. It would have turned into a very expensive meal. Because we liked the food we will likely return, but instead of tapas will order an entree; these seemed more attractive."

It is almost walking distance from where I live, and it is usually my go to restaurant when introducing friends to new restaurants which are close by and regretfully overlooked for being slightly out of the way.   • "My husband and I swear we have to get here more often every time we go to Guardado's. We get wonderful service, a lively yet comfortable atmosphere, and fabulous food! The chicken thighs with olives and stuffed pimentos are old favorites. The lamb chops and asparagus specials both lovely. I tried the spinach with citrus and it was heavenly. Just what I needed for a flavorful infusion of leafy green vitamins. The family that runs this neighborhood gem deserve accolades for holding quality and service to such high standards even while getting busier and busier as the word gets out."
