Diner Reviews
  • "Amazing food and music. We enjoyed a lot our dinner! "

  • "The food was okay. I tried the oxtail with mashed sweet plantains and rice and beans. In my opinion, it was a little salty. The decor was cool. But the highlight was the couple who got up during their meal and danced to the live music that was playing. They were great!"

  • "My husband had the a salad with citrus dressing and shreded pork which were excellent. My dish was good but more ordinary. The portions were very plentiful so I'm glad we didn't order appetizers for just the two of us. We plan on going back."

  • "We went at on a Friday at 6:30, pre-theater. Food was very good. All service staff were very nice if a bit harried. Noise was pretty loud. We were in the corner, so it was probably a little quieter. There's a bandstand and they must have music later on. Probably lots of fun, but not for conversation!"

  • "A Cuban restaurant with atmosphere, live music and yummy appetizers, drinks and main courses. Highly recommend if you are in midtown. Tends to be quite noisy."

  • "We had such a great experience at this neighborhood gem. The drinks were AMAZING and the food was great too. We had perfect reservations at 8 and live music started at 9. The atmosphere was fun, energetic and inviting. I will most definitely be taking anyone visiting from out of town to Guantanamera."

  • "Wonderful Nice energetic waiters and delicious food...salad, tamale, suckling pig, chicken with avocado salad...scrumptious wine and drinks!and save room for the delicious yummy coffee and flan!"

  • "Good mohito and paella, outstanding grilled squid. Don't miss the plantains. Angelo and his friends made a nice birthday surprise for my daughter. We'll go back later next time for the music."

  • "Loved everything about this place. The food, service, and Décor were spot on. Celebrated my 40th birthday here with friends. They had live music later on that night, but we had to leave to be on time for a show. Would deffinitly go back another time when we visit the city again!"

  • "We had a party of five and all of us cleared our plates. The food is really quite excellent"

  • "Food was good and the atmosphere is always energetic. This isn't the place to go if you're trying to have a romantic dinner or quiet conversation. It's the type of place you go to enjoy some great live music and to relax with friends after a long week at the office."
    Dined on 3/7/2014
  • "Food was very good. Music so loud hard to talk and service was less than optimal"
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "Been there before and loved it....now food boring and lacking in any taste. Forgot bread, forgot utensils.....and the noise was unbearable. One of our party left before the check die to the noise"

  • "I liked the fact that the menu was authentic and the service was terrific."

  • "When I arrived the restaurant was empty but I was not allowed to sit down till my entire party arrived. They wanted to seat us in the basement but when I said one of our party could not walk down stairs they made us wait another 5 or 10 minutes deciding whether or not to seat us on the first floor. After being seated, the waiter was terrific and the food heavenly."

  • "I thought the food was delicious, the service was great. My boyfriend had the Ropa Vieja, which is his favorite. The portion was not as big as what he was used to but he said the flavors were wonderful. we also had mojitos which were delish as well. I would definitely go back!"

  • "If u r in the mood for some good Cuban food and live music then this is the place. Mojitos= every claims they can make them but here they r the real deal. The yellow rice has an amazing flavor that cannot be duplicated. The steak I had was bursting with flavor. There is a chocolate dessert and it's a must. It takes 15 minutes to prepare however well worth it. Stick around for live music around 8:30."

  • "i am sorry to say, i had a horrible experience at this restaurant, with the service and the food, and than to be charged twice for the fried plantains, when i had to ask for it towards the end of my meal, since they forgot to bring it out at all, i was very disappointed."

  • "The guava mojito at Guantanamera is the BEST mojito HANDS-DOWN I've had in years. Delicious, fresh, with a nice guava twist.. Awesome rice and beans, delicious ropa vieja. Returned the next day for lunch!"

  • "Should have plaintains or some type of chip with salsa on table to nibble while looking at menu."

  • "We eat at guatanamera each time we visit the city. Authentic Cuban food and drink with superb service. For those looking for a place to have conversation, have dinner befor the band starts. The music is spot on, but can fill the room."

  • "I was introduced to Cuban food several years ago and it quickly became a favorite. I visited Guantanamera in its former incarnation as Azucar and stuck with it in its present form. It is now a staple for each visit to NYC, and it has yet to disappoint. The mojitos are splendid, the service is excellent, the food superb and in good quantity to fill any appetite, and the live music helps you work the above right back off again. Muchas gracias!"

  • "We ate here before the theater last Saturday. I had been here before, later at night and the band was playing etc. This time it was much more low-key. We could even hear each other talk, something that isn't possible once the band starts. We sat downstairs, which is even more intimate. We had the calamari appetizer. Never saw calamari this size before (HUGE); not sure what actual species it was- but it was good. Two of us had cuban sandwiches, which were great-fresh bread, hot meat, pickles. Yum. My son had the seafood stew, generous portions. Mojitos were good- i think better than their sangria. The 'traditional cuban dessert' was AWESOME!! Tres leches cake also very good. And i had just gotten back from Cuba one week before."

  • "I love Guantanamera! This is my third time dining her but it felt like it was the first time all over again! The food is delicious, and was devilered very quickly to my party of 5. The atmosphere is awesome and the live band is always on point!"

  • "This place has some very very good food, especially the paella and the fried plantain bowl stuffed with beef and a side of rice. I've been here a few times and every time I leave to tell others about how good the food is. The place looks like a standard Cuban spot and the service is pretty normal fair, but the food makes up for all of it. I also like that they are always willing to accommodate one's needs."

  • "Visited this restaurant many years ago for paella. Being very picky about Cuban food, we were skeptical to return but were in the neighborhood on a cold winter night and music was also on the menu for the night so we gave Guantanamera another try. We had "vaca frita" and "masitas de puerco" both were excellent and well seasoned. They were both accompanied by rice and black beans. The coconut custard desert was a delicious take on creme brûlée. The service was excellent!...food came out quickly and our waitress and bus boys were constantly checking on us. Although the acoustics were not the best, and the noise level was quite loud, the music added a nice ambience...everyone in the place was feeling the Latin rhythm & dancing in their seats."

  • "We had a great time. We were a party of three and the fourth was running 5 minutes late, but they seated us anyway. Very nice. The food and service was very good. Looking forward to going back."

  • "We needed a restaurant for a pre-theatre dinner and enturing a bit further out from the theatre district paid off. Cuban food was what was in mind and Guantanamera fit the bill nicely. Their food was excellent: ropa vieja, pollo al coco, plantano maduro, empanadas, flan & cafe con leche; all expertly prepared. Save for slightly clueless hostesses too busy yapping with each to notice us when we walked in, service was crisp, cordial and efficient. A brisk jaunt down to 45th street gave us plenty of time to make an 8pm curtain and provided a post-dinner 'constitutional' as well. Would definitely recommend Guantanamera."

  • "I took a girl there for dinner and sat downstairs. It was least noisy downstairs so we were able to talk. I liked the live band upstairs but it was pretty loud for conversation. Food came out fast and tastes good"

  • "Have been going here for lunch off and on for years, and the food and ambiance is wonderful, and portions are large. They have a great prix-fix lunch, and the ambiance is great. Recommendations are sangria, beef empanadas or soup for appetizers, cuban sandwich or chicken aljibe for entrees, and the flan for dessert is the best in the city. Off the prix-fix, I would recommend the churrasco or the 1/2 garlic chicken, but still get the flan for dessert. I've never been for dinner, but I think they have a band every night, so I'm sure it's festive (but probably a lot noisier)."
