A word from Grünauer
Grünauer is a classic Viennese style restaurant with Central European influences of German, Hugarian, and international specialties. Peter Grünauer, executive chef, his son Nicholas, and daughter Elisabeth opened Grünauer in May of 2010. Peter is from Austria and his brother and sister still run their family restaurant in the Neubau region of Vienna. The menu offers simple straight-forward, and affordable cuisine high-lighting some of the best cuisine Central Europe has to offer. The menu here is meant to satisfy every customer that walks in the door. The Wunder Bar offers an array of wines, beer, and spirits unlike any other restaurant in Kansas City. The authentic Biergarten outside is one of kind as well. There is no other place in the city to match the atmosphere of Grünauer. We pride ourselves on offering the best customer service and knowledge of our product. We want to offer you a fine dining experience with a family feel so, make a reservation today! Continued

  • "Since I was leaving town on our anniversary I told my husband we would celebrate early and I would take care of all the arrangements. Neither of us had been here before and the menu looked good. Grunauer was great. A warm greeting when we came in, a very rustic but elegant atmosphere, and a beautiful hydrangea at the table. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive, and helpful in making decisions. The bread was homemade, and the appetizer had a unusual name, (but I call it delicious), and our dinner was wonderful. To top it off we shared an apple strudel - oh my. I even convinced my "Bud Light" guy to try a German beer and he was happy with what the waiter recommended. We are glad we went and will definitely return!"

  • "This fine European style restaurant is consistently great. The service is outstanding, so much so, that you wonder how they do it some much better than most. It has a great patio, so it is definitely one of KC's best spots during good weather. Best spinach salad in the city. Not to be missed if you are visiting and an absolute must to have in your rotation if you live in Kansas City."

  • "Austrian cuisine in the restored Kansas City freight house. What could be better?"

  • "Been here plenty of times. It's always a nice change of pace from the common restaurants you go to. By that I mean the food is really German in taste and presentation. One of the truer German food restaurants. Staff is always nice and the place is very well kept. The waitress we had tonight was not up to par, though. Not enough for me to "not come back", but if it happens again, I might not. I like good attentive service and tip very well when I get it. Bad service I will deal with only once."

  • "A very enjoyable evening. Reservation and table was immediately available. Service was fine although close table spacing resulted in repeated jostling. Truly a minor point. Great. Aridity to menu and drink list. Regional menu, bustling and upbeat atmosphere all contributed to an enjoyable evening. Grunauer's is very highly recommended to all!"

  • "and that's about it.....food was just so so......wine list was not very good.....would not go back....such a shame, because we loved the building"

  • "The restaurant was very empty when we came in. It took about 5 minutes for someone to come by and just bring us waters- they said that our server would be with us in a moment. When our server did arrive she was great! Food was good. Restaurant was way too quiet- everyone could hear each others conversations- no overhead music. Ambiance was terrible."

  • "We had out-of-town family here from German descent, so we took them on a recommendation from a friend. We started with an Appetizer Gebackene Champignons (fried mushrooms with tartar sauce). These were simply scrumptious! We could have had a whole meal just of these, easily. I tried Hungarian Beef (Slow braised beef in a spicy paprika sauce with spätzle), My sister had Tafelspitz (Sliced beef in a consomme with root vegetables and three classic sauces: apple horseradish, chive, and creamed spinach), her husband had Schwammerl (Mushrooms in a white wine paprika sauce with austrian potato dumplings) and my husband had Paprikahuhn (chicken breast). All were delicious, but esp the Tafelspitz. We highly recommend the food and the atmosphere!"

  • "Celebrated my husband's birthday. He is German and Austrian. We often try German restaurants when we travel. This was the absolute best. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. We'll definitely be coming back."

  • "With our busy lives, we designate one time a year to dine as a family some place beyond our immediate neighborhood. We picked Gruenauer based on a recommendation from my son's German teacher and his brief experience there. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent, and the server was pleasantly attentive as we enjoyed a long evening of fine food and drink."

  • "A new friend and I decided to explore and Grünauer's was a delight. When I am getting to know someone I like for us to be able to hear what each other is saying and we could. If there was music playing it was so soft that I don't remember it. The waiter was attentive to our needs, but not overbearing, and answered all questions we asked politely and as though he genuinely cared. We spent more than we had originally intended, but will definitely go again."

  • "Another great meal at Grunauer. I had the liver, and enjoyed it immensely. The portion was generous and half of it went home with me. Great service from Jimmy, who was friendly and knowledgable and did a great job of keeping our wine and water glasses filled."

  • "Grunauer offers the most amazing authentic German/Austrian food and wine coupled with knowledgeable, attentive front-of-house service. But, the food comes out of that magic kitchen way too fast. Three courses of German food served in less an hour is just too much for the average appetite. However, this doesn't stop me from recommending Grunauer highly."

  • "The best German/Austrian food I have had anywhere, including Berlin. The decor is rustic and the setting in the warehouse district is "downtown" and in the arts district too. Great beer, coffee, and other specialties too. I highly recommend it."

  • "I used to live in Germany and seldom find a restaurant claiming to serve German food that tastes anything like I remember eating in Germany. This restaurant hit it! The food really did taste like authentic German food. My husband and I went for lunch and we loved every second of it! The atmosphere is very nice but not stuffy. I had the Wiener Schnitzel with the potato cucumber salad and a side of spatzle. It was all wonderful!!"

  • "It was my first time at Grunauer and our waiter gave us a little history of the family-owned business. He was very attentive to us and the food was delicious. I loved that it was not so noisy that we could not hear ourselves talk. I was there for the food but, more importantly, wanted to catch up with an old friend and was able to enjoy both. I would highly recommend it!"

  • "It was an excellent experience. The ambiance is very pleasant, the menu had plenty of choices and carried many of the traditional German fare. Wait staff was courteous and attentive but not over bearing. The meal was served rather quickly, which in my case, was very nice. We had bread on the table while waiting. Price was reasonable and food was delicious."

  • "The server was very nice from the time we entered the door till we left full and happy. The place was spotless and noise level just right, you could hear the jazz/polka music. The salmon was my favorite dish with it melting in my mouth it was so tender."

  • "I can't spell or pronounce the delicious meal we had, but it doesn't matter....it's all excellent. Our 14oz steaks were cooked perfectly. The red wine reduction and caper demi glaze added a flavorful accent. The staff was accommodating to our mentioning that we were late an running behind our schedule. The cocktails were delicious too."

  • "Friends and family have eaten here and said how good it was. We've wanted to try it for a long time and finally made it a point for a birthday dinner. The Freighthouse area is really neat as we enjoy the historic culture of downtown KC. Our hostess and waitress were very knowledgeable and friendly. The atmosphere itself is wonderful. Even though the prices are a bit high for drinks as well as the food, what you get is oustanding. There is something for everyone and being of German decent we really enjoyed everything. We will recommend it and will most likely return."

  • "This restaurant was such a unique, enjoyable find. We were able to order dishes we had never tried before, and the selections were authentic Austrian selections. Very tasty"

  • "The Kalbsbratwurst, 100% veal bratwurst, Käsekrainer, Pork with cheddar cheese, Bratwurst, Traditional pork and veal and the Tommyknocker Bratwurst, Pork bratwurst made with Tommyknocker pale ale were amazing and they have a 5 sausage selection on the menu allowing you to get one of each which I recommend. All of these are made fresh daily in house. We also had the Hungarian Beef Gulasch that was fantabulous. Great back story, the owner is from Austria and had places in New York. Still family owned and operated. Go, you won't be sorry. Great place"

  • "When the food was served it was lukewarm, the knoedel's were dry (they don't even attempt to put enough gravy on it to compensate for the dryness, that can also be said for the meat), and the beer is way over priced. Also when we ask for our food to be put in a "to go" box the waitress actually brought the box to our table and expected us to pack it. For a restaurant charging the type of prices they are my wife and I were greatly disappointed in the dining experience."
