Diner Reviews
  • "For those visiting Asheville and staying at the Grovepark Inn across the street, the Grovewood Cafe is an excellant break from "hotel food". For locals, there are better choices."

  • "My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at the Grovewood Cafe. We loved being in the historic arts and crafts setting. The food was excellent! The warm and friendly staff was the best part though- not to mention the darling squirrels with names who visited at the windows. Brunch at the Grovewood Cafe was an absolutely delightful experience. Can't wait until the weather permits outdoor dining, as they have a lovely terrace too!"

  • "We ordered the vegetable plate and found each food item tasted uniquely satisfying. The waitress was upbeat and helpful. We used a groupon and would definitely go back. I have been here for lunch also. It is located across from the Grovepark Inn and next to the artist galleries. You won't go wrong by eating here."

  • "Great place to have a nice meal in a beautiful setting."

  • "Wonderful brunch in the neighborhood of the Grove Park Inn. They celebrate their 20th anniversary this May. Stop bye for a good time."

  • "We enjoyed friendly service in a lovely location. The food was good but not memorable. However, we may try it another time in spring or summer because they have a patio in a delightful garden setting."

  • "Very nice lunch in outdoor garden. Excellent service good food."

  • "We have been to Grovewood Cafe on many occasions for lunch and dinner. Most of the time we have enjoyed our experience. This time we lunched during the Arts and Crafts Conference (had reservations 11:30am). It was busy! Our food came after an hour's waiting and was warm not hot. A couple behind us finally gave up and left after a similar wait. There are many occasions when GPI will be very busy and the Cafe should expect more diners, and staff accordingly. We even paid cash so as not to wait for charge processing and delay us further. We had a similar experience during the gingerbread exhibit."

  • "As a first time visitor, can't say enough regarding the quality of food, relaxing enviroment and excellent service! The menu selection was superb and we had difficulty in deciding what to have for lunch. We'll be returning to try them all!"

  • "Food was great and service even better. Lacked atmosphere, but was able to get a reservation at the last minute on Valentine... Wonderful!"

  • "We were out and found this restaurant on opentable. The food was good. Portions were not gigantic, but appropriately sized. It was an intimate setting the tables were not crowded together. Good place for a quiet dinner for two. Not a place I would bring kids."

  • "This is one of our favorite Asheville spots - always excellent for lunch, dinner, or wine and snacks on the patio. A quite garden setting adjacent to (but separate from and even more laid back) the Grove Park Inn. Always a pleasure to go to the Inn for a cocktail by the big fireplaces, then walk over to the Cafe for dinner. Free parking for Grovewood Inn guests. This trip we had schnitzel and chicken and dumplings, as well as fried green tomatoes and a kale caesar salad, all very good, as always for the Grovewood Inn. The Inn is seldom crowded, service is always attentive. The menu changes seasonally, but the steak and trout are reliable winners every time."

  • "The 4 star rating was a promising sign to a very bland and unsatisfying meal. We arrived on a Friday night at 7:00 and only one other table of two was seated in the entire restaurant! The steak was unseasoned and bland...nothing special...and was not cooked to the correct temperature. The service was very good and friendly and the setting was nice. The chairs were hard and uncomfortable. Also, our entrees were very overpriced for the mediocre quality. Would not go back!"

  • "The menu is small but everything we had was delicious. Biltmore Village architecture, building had been moved to it's present location. Charming. Will be back."

  • "The homemade chips were good but disappointed with the sandwich. Expected more than a deli slice of ham and lettuce between two thin slices of bread."

  • "I have eaten lunch at Grovewood Cafe as recently as one month ago. It was charming and delicious. Ordered the same thing...1/2 sandwich and a cup of soup. The chowder was so thick with cream, almost nausiating. the chicken sandwich contained little bits of chicken (did they just debone it and give me the bits?) The "homemade Amish bread" was not special. Nothing to speak of for dessert. Last visit I had cooked apples with a nice oat and cinnamon topping. Arrived at 1pm and only saw one other table while we sat for an hour or longer. Won't return until someone I know says it's good again."

  • "This was my second visit to the Grovewood. It reminds me if a ladies' tea room We were looking for a light lunch and their homemade vegan tomato soup and a half tuna sandwich on toasted dill bread hit the spot. Our waitress was pleasant although device was slow considering we were the only party in the front room. My sandwich appeared before the sup was ready. Given it was lunch time, I would think the soup would already be hot. The metal back chairs give the place a cheap look. How about investing in some newer, better looking and more comfortable ones? Overall, this place satisfied our lunch needs. If we hadn't been going to the Grove Park Inn to see the gingerbread contest winners we would have found a place in downtown Asheville."

  • "The cafe is located on the grounds of the grove park inn and is a little "house" located across the street, surrounded by a museum and gardens I have heard that this place is local legend, as parents would take their children as they grew up, and now those children take their parents and children! It was very crowded being Christmas ve, and they were on a fixed menu. But we were happy to have a place to go and the food and desserts (yum yum) were very enjoyable. This was nit fine dining , but rather a good home cooked meal. The service was friendly and the wine list was decent and reasonable Definitely would go again for lunch or dinner when it is not as crowded"

  • "We had Christmas (2013) lunch at The Grovewood Cafe. The ambience in the front room of the former stone cottage was Christmas cheery with warm sunlight and the scent of a beautiful, cut tree, but the backroom was dreary, with an institutional feel to the tired old decor. The service was prompt and friendly throughout the meal. The food was small in portion, and the meats in the entrees were all factory-farmed, but in a town known for its robust independent restaurants with their differing interpretations of farm-to-table fare, the independently owned Grovewood Cafe stands out as a disappointment. The almost $140 tab including a $20 tip for our waitress who tried hard to please was outrageous for two people who had one glass of wine each."

  • "Went there with a party of four for Christmas Day dinner; they had a fixed price menu for the day. We had three different entrees and all were simple but good. We had four different appetizers which were ordinary and miniscule. The dessert was a buffet, which seemed like a nice idea but none of it was to die for. Our server pushed us along faster than we wanted to go, and there seemed to be no need to turn the table. Even allowing for a premium because of the holiday, the price seemed really hefty for a pretty ordinary meal in very ordinary surroundings"

  • "Wonderful spot for visiting over a great meal with friends, family or groups. Food is delicious, service great, noise level low and tables not crowded together! Owners very friendly and responsive. Even has easy, free parking and a 5 star art gallery next door. Love this place!"

  • "We had reservations for our family here for Thanksgiving this year and was pleasantly surprised that we had some options for dinner. Everything we ate was very yummy and our kids felt welcome, too. felt like we were eating in an old house. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place for its food."

  • "Service was terrific, food was good, but please update your dining room. For such a historic building it's a shame the interior does not do the space justice."

  • "We had a Thanksgiving reservation for two. Were seated in less than five minutes. The food was great. Wine selection was o.k. (we arent wine experts). Dessert menu was excellent and service outstanding."

  • "First impressions: You enter directly into the dining area with no hostess or hostess stand, leaving us to wait, wondering if we should continue into a second room visible from the door. The hostess appeared in a couple of minutes and seated us promptly. The ambience was very simple with no window treatments, no table cloths no background music. The food was fine, but the efforts to cut corners by serving only two tiny thin pats of butter and minimal gravy on turkey and none on dressing did not set a festive tone. On the plus side the server was friendly and prompt, The entree was well prepared and generous in quantity. The dessert bar had many choices and quality was good. It was definitely OK - but Asheville has many other options."

  • "The food was ok but nothing special, especially for the price. I did like that you are able to choose your sides and the roasted Brussels sprouts were very good. Inside, the decor was very old and tired. Outdated color pallet and uncomfortable straight metal back chairs. Maybe patio seating has more ambiance. We were there at 6:30 and only one other couple was dining. About 20 minutes later a group of six came in. The weather was bad so that could explain the lack of diners. I would give it a second chance but it will be outside for lunch."

  • "It was our first time at Grovewood Cafe. Perhaps it was because we went on a Sunday afternoon but our experience was not good. There is absolutely no ambiance at this place. We were practically the only people there. As we live in the area, we dine out at least three or four times a week at various places in Asheville. We found the food at Grovewood Cafe too expensive for what we received. The food was dull and the quality was not great."

  • "Chef owned Grovewood always has excellent vegetables - and usually has delicious meatloaf on the menu. Trout also is good, and salads are fresh and inventive. Waitstaff are always attentive to assure delightful meals. This is one of our regular dining spots and have never been disappointed."

  • "Husband ordered french toast. Rated it 5 out of 10, was OK. I ordered onion soup, very good, not too salty. I also ordered the salad with chicken and walnuts. The salad was small for the price. The greens were very good. The chicken was not flavorful, and not really enough to warrant what one would expect from a salad, which included chicken. The description on the menu, did not fit what I was served. I expected it to be more a dinner salad rather than a slightly large side salad. We visited the restaurant 2 years ago for Thanksgiving and enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately, this was a disappointing visit, and I left feeling that the cost of the french toast and salad did not warrant the quality I expected."

  • "So many locals forget about this hidden gem, which is next to the Grove Park Inn, but not part of the Inn. And it does have its own parking lot. Server was very attentive, and took great care with my mother's special needs of gluten free. It was a lovely outdoor brunch"
