A word from Grotto Wine Bar
Grotto has emerged as the premier wine bar destination in Northeast Ohio. We are situated in Historic Shaker Square; rich in history and surrounded by great restaurants and chefs. Grotto Wine Bar is the perfect compliment to Shaker Square. Grotto is open 7 days a week starting at 4:30 and offers late night dining. Grotto’s Italian menu and International wine list has something for everyone. Guests can enjoy a variety of amazing wines and small plates called “piccoli piatti” dishes at very reasonable prices. We feature simply, wine we love with the food we love. Whether you start your night or end your night at Grotto, once you get there, you won’t want to leave. The decor and ambiance really set this wine bar apart. Portions of the space look like they were carved out of a Roman aqueduct. The focal point of Grotto has to be the 1000 bottle wine cellar that is encased in stone and brick and acts as the back drop for the bar and dining areas.

I so wanted to have a great experience at Grotto, having heard wonderful things about their patio dining in the summer. While the sommelier, wine and food were very good, the service and ambience were the opposite. Our server just didnt listen, maybe because of the very loud room, or maybe he just didn't care. While we made it very clear our party of 4 was sharing mussels, 2 salads and a pizza, no sharing plates were given or asked if needed, the same with the 2 main courses, also shared. Even the experience of walking into the restaurant via the main door and a patio that still looked like it needed to be cleaned post summer service, an extension cord on the ground. There is a disconnect between the kitchen and front of the house.

The atmosphere in the bar was quaint and cosy. Dark wood, nice fireplace and quiet. Perfect for a glass of wine or drink with a friend. Our waitress was very helpful in picking out a good wine. She brought 2 hefty sample glases out to our table for us to try before having to order a glass we may not enjoy. Even though my dinner was good, I had the gnocci plate, I was the only one that really had a comment about their dish. I was with a group of 8. The food was okay,: a bit pricey for what you got. Id go back just to enjoy the bar area and maybe an appetizer.

Sadly, the red wine was served warmer than room temperature and needed to be chilled at the table. There were very few customers even at 7:30pm while the rest of the establishments in the area were packed with diners.

For being a wine bar, the Grotto has only a handful of wines available. They use to have a fantastic selection and we could count on selecting a wine favorite or trying something new. Not any more. The Shrimp Risotto was very disappointing. I couldn't find any shrimp in the dish!

I am a repeat diner at THe Grotto and usually have a very good meal; this was an exception. The last time I was there, the wine list was reduced to a paper printing of a small selection of ordinary choices; this has not improved. Last ime I was there they were temporarily "out of" cognac; this too has not changed. Last time I was there the food and service weres excellent; this time the food was OK, the service was adequate. Pizza was served under done, the ravioli was sloppy in presentation. It will be a while before I go back.

Service was excellent. Wine list of half price bottles (Sunday) was presentable and separate from the formidable everyday list. What a great idea! We were in the mood for steak so two of us got the fillet mignon. Delish! And at 8 ounces, plenty satisfying. The dining rooms are just lovely with lots of little romantic corners. In the winter there is a fire always going in the large rustic fireplace, but even in May, without a fire, it provides a warm feeling to the room. All in all it was a very fine way to spend an early Sunday evening.

For a wine bar, the wine selection was not good! Only a handful of options, and the one we wanted was not even stocked. I would also not recommend this place for a special occasion. The food was enjoable, but it has more of a "bar" feel that a nice restaurant. I would instead recommend for an after (or before) movie bite/drink.

While the ambiance was wonderful, and the wine list was great (along with some great wine glasses), we found the food to be fair. We were hoping for a bit more. I had the pork medallions and while they were cooked nicely, the flavors lacked and the mashed potatoes were grainy and dry. I also thought the portion size was small, especially since there was no salad or veggie that went with the meal. Would definitely go back for a pre or post meal for a cocktail, but would not recommend for dinner.

  • Grotto remains one of my favorite
    RebK1VIP

Grotto remains one of my favorite spots for dinner. This visit I had the soft shell crab which is in season now. It was delicious! It was lightly battered and fried, on a small salad of greens, thinly sliced radishes and fiddlehead fern prepared in a brown butter vinigrette. I also had the risotto. My company both had the linguine and clams and the brussel sprouts. They food was excellent also. The only compaint I have is that the wine list was very disappointing. The server told us they are ion between shipments. For a wine bar, this was unexpected.

On a Sundy evening after a stormy afternoon, the resturant was not crowded yet the music level was set for a full crowd. The food was good, but not great, i.e the cappillini with oil and garlic had much more oil than flavor, even though the ingredients were fresh. The lobster gnocchi was very good, as usual. The salads were well portioned. The risoto was well flavored but a little sticky. We needed to request ground pepper, and the kitchen of this Italian resturaunt was low on parmesian cheese. The pinot noir offerred from the lighter end of the "earthy" spectrum hardly qualified as a pinot, period. This from a resturaunt that is a "wine bar". The waitress was new, but trying very hard to please.

  • You cannot go past the Sofia
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 2/3/2012
You cannot go past the Sofia pizza. The hot peppers make it awesome (but slightly incompatible with the excellent red wines on offer, so save them for afterwards). The vegetarian lasagna was different from last time, yet still excellent, which is very reassuring, and it went super well with the brussels sprouts (sans pancetta---thank you chef). We ordered the pot de creme and the chocolate peanut butter torte for dessert, which turned out to be a lot of dessert, but they very kindly packaged up the unfinished portion of the cake to go, and it seemed to have gotten even better after spending a night in the fridge.

We really enjoyed our first visit to the Grotto. Being displaced north-east-coasters (in some sense) we were delighted with the sofia pizza. It was really thin! and had a good amount of spice. Nice. The vegetarian lasagna was delicious and well-balanced; relatively light but very flavourful. The grilled romaine salad was also very good, and welcome given the season. The wine list is very good, and it's super nice to be able to sample a few with a flight. The meal concluded with the dark chocolate pot de creme which was rather fabulous.

On the whole, loved it. The food was awesome though the presentation didn't look like much. The duck was outstanding and I highly recommend it! Only bad thing was the fries, so extremely over-salted I had to send it back. Atmosphere was right too- I went in the heart of winter and the blazing fireplace/ plush armchairs and dimly lit bar ambiance with the background murmurs of conversation felt perfect. Service was polite and responsive, if a little languid. And it's just a hop & skip away from the train stop. I would return if I visited the city again.

Food was goo. Service was good. A little strange because there were a couple of "basic" menu items they were out of. E.g., penne, chicken. Also, strange that they are a "wine bar" but they were also out of a lot of wines. Mostly reds. We went there because it is a "wine bar" and were hoping to see a little more expansive wine menu. They explained to us that they are "paring back their wine menu," but we also thought that was odd given that they are a "wine bar." The food was good and the service was good, and we'd go back, but again, just a little bit of an odd experience.

I was hesitant to go there, after reading the reviews, but found the negative comments baseless. The bar service was a little slow given the bartenders were also waiting tables but I wasn't inconvenienced. I found the selection of wines comparable to any where I live (Washington DC) and found the bartenders knowledge more than sufficient to address any "wine" questions. The food was absolutely superb and Master Chef Todd was more that agreeable to alter the menu selections based on my personal tastes. The ambience was perfect (soft lighting and very low noise level), the wines exquisite (sampled 5 different vineyards) and the food superb! I couldn't have asked for a more enjoyable evening! The Chef is to be commended!

This was my second visit to The Grotto Wine Bar. The food is different and good. This was my husband's first time and he was pleasantly surprised. What I like most was that the food is enough where you can have dinner and be satisfied and still have energy for a night out on the town. The service was excellent. I wanted a glass of Riesling and the waitress said they were out, but she bought me 2 other wines to sample in its place. When the Riesling came in, she remembered and told me right away.

We had a brand new waitress who was clearly overwhelmed on her first night. The restaurant should have had someone helping her because it took her forever to refill water and bring cocktails or even come by and ask if everything was okay. We've been to the Grotto many times in the past so this wouldn't stop us from going again, but it shouldn't have happened on a Saturday night over a holiday weekend.
