Diner Reviews
  • "Grotto is ideal for a business lunch. The waitstaff is excellent, a varied menu, good is fresh and of quality and you can hear each other. I'll be back."

  • "Love the mussels, especially Mussels Marechiaro and Linguine Pescatore with mussels and clams. I went to the same restaurant twice over the same weekend, ordered the same food and it has been great. Very kids friendly. My kids were picky on the pizza (too much cheese or too little cheese). In all case, the restaurant staffs were helpful and friendly and thoughtful. Highly recommended. Did not get a chance to the try its wine selection."

  • "Place was very noisy and crowded with the service a little slow. The price was a little high for the quality of the food. The shrimp that were used in our meals were not fresh [had been frozen] with little taste. Maybe a meat dish would be better."

  • "My wife and I went for our anniversary, the food was absolutely perfect and the service couldn't have been better. The waiter found out that my wife had certain food allergies, and he was very thoughtful of that and brought her a sampler plate of a few apps for her to try. We will definitely be going back."

  • "I can always rely on Grotto for impeccable service and food; whether it is the Galleria location or the one in the Woodlands. We wanted a decent dinner before a concert in the Woodlands and Grotto was the perfect choice for a nice meal that allowed us to get in and out in a relatively short amount of time."

  • " Valet parking availability is an assett. Great Food and Great service continue."

  • "Eh, Nothing to write home about. Typical Chain type food. No better / worse than Olive Garden."

  • "Service, atmosphere and food were wonderful. Quiet enough to carry on a conversation with my guest."

  • "The Grotto is a favorite of ours since we discovered it 3 years ago. The service is always outstanding, my husband has special dietary needs and they will always go the extra mile to accommodate him. We recently celebrated his 50th birthday and again we were not disappointed with the food or the service."

  • "Dined here on a Friday night about 8:15 pm for my husbands birthday, place was totally packed, we were dressed nicer than people around us (most had shorts & golf shirts typical summer dress code in woodlands) however our waiter was great, food was FANTASTIC, we had one if the night specials filet mignon with lump crab meat with a Gorgonzola cream sauce, highly recommend! Can't say enough about delicious food! We will be back and next time I'll wear my nice shorts :-)"

  • "Food was very good and so was the service. However, we spent my husband's birthday dinner with no real conversation due to the noise. I couldn't hear the other 3 people at my table at all. We could barely hear the waiter. After much frustration we just quit trying to talk to each other, finished our food and left. I won't go back anytime soon - at least not for dinner. Maybe lunch is better?? What could have been a very lovely experience was ruined by the noise level. I might as well have been there by myself."

  • "Grotto's consistently is better than the average Italian restaurant. Delicious pasta and seafood and great atmosphere. The bread is delicious and location is perfect, wish they had another location on the north side of town. Service is attentive and love the big round tables they have for a group of 6. Glad they are now a part of open table reservations, makes reserving with them easier."

  • "We had been to Grotto many times over the past few years, but noticed quality and service were slipping. The food had cheap substitutions in dishes that were once great (small, poor quality seafood now being used), and the service left a lot to be desired. We also had the "pleasure" of facing the kitchen while we ate... and watching a cook take care of some "nasal issues" and then immediately return to the line without so much as washing his hands. Needless to say, we gave the restaurant one final chance, but we won't be returning. It's a shame, as we always enjoyed dining here in the past."

  • "While the waiter and service was excellent, the noise level, frenetic pace of staff, and busy restaurant was not relaxing for dinner and conversation. Personally, I like a quiet and calm place to eat dinner, relax and unwind. This may be a great place for lunch, but trying to hear above all of the noise, was just to much for me. Food was nothing special, but it was hot when it was served."

  • "Service was awful. Our drink order took 40 minutes to complete. One person got the wrong drink and had to return it. One couple never got their salad while 3 other people received theirs. At least one entree order came with the wrong sides. Food was average. Closing out our tab took at least 30 minutes and contained items we did not order. We were so frustrated, we finally just paid the bill to get out. The noise level was high and it was impossible to hold a normal conversation. We will not return."

  • "Food was awesome! They have gluten free menu items including GF spaghetti. I opted for the chopped Italian salad (which was GF). Great flavors. The salad dressing was added tableside. The wine selection was good as well. But the most enjoyable experience was out waitress Kiersten. She was very busy that evening with her tables but took the time to take good care of us as well as her other tables. Very attentive!"

  • "The Grotto needs to install mouse dampening. An otherwise very enjoyable dining experience, in all other regards, lessened by an almost unbearable din. Not just this visit, but last one as well. Not worth returning, unless I knew the noise was dampened. "

  • "Food was excellent. Service was a little slow, especially since they were not real busy due to the wine walk going on in the market area. The only complaint was with them not being busy, they stuck us in a back corner near the door to the outside dining so we would get a blast of hot air every time the door opened. Then as it turned out, the indoor door next to our table was for the broom closet. We asked to be moved and were given our choice of tables. We also called the manager the next day and he apologized and thanked us for the input."

  • "very accomodating staff in spite of our late arrival. Delicious bread was brought with beverages...simple, classic salad & thick minestrone were creatively & perfectly seasoned. Hubby chose basic marinara sauce spaghetti and it was as tasty as he anticipated & remembered. we didn't remember that it was the "Landry" conversion to a noisier (especially in light of the Jimmy Buffett concert crowd - WOW) more casual venue, but it surely filled all our needs. They also allowed valet parking until the concert ended - making our fun evening a pleasant success after a 1-1/2 hr commute from west Houston in rush hour traffic."

  • "We chose the Grotto because of its proximity to the Cynthia Woods Pavilion, we had tickets for Jimmy Buffett. The concert started at 8pm so I expected a 6pm reservation to give us plenty of time. We had a party of 8. We were not seated until 6.40pm and received free appetizers as an apology for the delay. We promptly ordered our food but by 7.45pm the food had not arrived. We paid for our drinks and left for the concert. The manager apologized and said that they had problems in the kitchen. They were very busy, but the restaurant quickly thinned out shortly after we were seated. I got the impression that our order hadn't been placed. If you are attending a concert at the Woodlands, maybe the Grotto isn't the best choice."

  • "Easily the worst resteraunt I've eaten anywhere in the world, and I've travelled. Service, abysmal, no ambience at all, dirty tables, unhappy staff. Didn't enjoy this experience at all, we won't be back."

  • "Our server Chris and his assistants/helpers were excellent. The food was outstanding."

  • "This is one the best dining experiences we've enjoyed lately. Wonderful service from the moment we walked in, through dinner and even when we left. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The food was delicious and presented perfectly. Will definitely return for more!"

  • "We have dined at Grotto's several times in the past, especially when they first opened many years ago. Dining back then was more formal and romantic. You could count on superior service, great food, elegant surroundings, and reserved dining. Now it is too loud, you can wear whatever you like, and the service is poor. On this visit our waiter took 20 minutes to return take our order after we were served our beverages. We didn't see him again until the food was served. We needed more bread, olive oil, and water. We had the crab claw appetizer, absolutely too die for, and 8 selections from the Antipasti Bar. More than enough food for two diners. Our companions had the 'Meatzza' pizza and Pollo Estate. Both were devoured. "

  • "This is why Tilman shouldn't be allowed to buy nice restaurants. Historically (when the Vallones ran it) The Grotto was a nice, non-chainy, somewhat unique restaurant with an interesting menu. Now it's just another cog in a food extrusion chain with pushy waiters obtusely trying to upsell appies and booze. Whoever manages our waiter doesn't care enough about our waiter to help him understand how embarrassing it is to interrupt a conversation, and therefore shouldn't be a manager. The service was remarkably slow even though the restaurant wasn't at all crowded. The food, like that at all chains, was 'meh' at best, but over-priced nonetheless. Market Street deserves better."

  • "Good place for a nice Italian dinner. The menu has a lot of variety and it all looked great. The overall dinner went very slow but we had great service, good wined and good food. A lot of big groups where there so it was a little loud."

  • "My husband and I don't very often make it to any Happy Hour after work but, both were off early one day last week and decided to give it a try. We sat at the bar at Grotto in The Woodlands and decided we would try the Happy Hour Menu as well as a couple of well deserved beverages. I must say we were both totally pleased by the prompt service and tasty items we chose. We ordered the meatballs, the mushrooms and a pizza and we did not leave hungry; even left a slice of pizza behind. We will definitely do this again."

  • "We booked a reservation for Mother's Day this year at Grotto. Surprisingly, we only waited about 15 minutes past our reservation to be seated, considering it was very busy that day. Our server was polite and very accommodating to our group. The meal was delicious, portions not so big at all, so you can imagine it was ON when the dessert display came at the end, hahaha. Overall, it was about $180 for 4 of us, including tip. Well deserved Mother's Day lunch for mom."

  • "Noisy, tables close together-- put in some banquettes and some sound deadening-- don't have your waiters pushing Landry Club twice ! Too much vinegar in roast chicken"

  • "We come to this restaurant at least once a month. This night had a lot of teens attending prom and a lot of adults eating before a concert. They were packed and had a lot of people waiting. Reservation was a must (& I made mine here). Service was just a little slower than usual, but that was to be expected tonight. Food was still brought out very timely, and everything was wonderful!! Can't wait to come back!"

  • "Our party of 6 chose Grotto as our pre-concert dining destination. All of us have been dining at Grotto on Westheimer for years so we knew exactly what to expect- except when the obviously new, very nice waiter proceeded to spill 2 glasses of wine & a glass of iced tea on 1 of our group! She got soaked and so did half the table. The mgr came over, along with a busboy, & things got cleaned up quickly. we were all great sports about it. 2 of the 6 meals ordered came out incorrectly & several other things were forgotten during the meal (i.e. the request for a knife, etc). The bill arrived & much to our surprise, not only was our friend's meal not comped-they charged her for the spilled iced tea! Shame on the manager for not doing more!"

  • "This was our first time to both the Woodlands and Grotto, and we will definitely be back to both. We were a group of eight and the staff didn't miss a beat in service. The food was as good as any we've had outside of Italy. Be sure to save room for the desserts!"
