A word from Grotta Azzurra
Founded in 1908 by the Davino family Grotta Azzurra was named for the blue grotto on the isle of Capri and designed to evoke the beauty of one of the worlds most famous caves in the world, intensified.

Enrico Caruso feasted here after performances, and Sinatra called it his one and only favorite Italian restaurant, making it the site of many a “Rat Pack” evening.

Shuttered for six years, Grotta Azzurra has now been stunningly renovated and rebirthed by a descendant renaissance for dining in Little Italy, with multi-talented chef Frank Castellana recreating the finest in Italian Cuisine.

  • "The restaurant is great - located in a corner and you have the option for outdoor or indoor dining. The food was good but the olive oil had a weird flavor to it. The portions were generous and waitstaff very attentive and friendly. I would go again and this time bring my friends!"

  • "Decent restaurant, wasn't too impressed though. I liked my dish but it was just chicken...you can't really mess up chicken. The other people in my party didn't care for their dishes. The service was a little slow even though it wasn't really busy at all, and we had to ask for the bread for the table, which is usually brought out with the waters when you first sit down. I didn't appreciate that gratuity was included for a party of 3; I feel it was a little high given the slow/lacking service. Also, we divided the bill (writing the cards and amounts on the back of the receipt) and the waiter charged the wrong amounts. The food wasn't delicious enough to overlook the lacking service."

The only complaint we had was that the gratuity was already added to our check for only 2 people. We ended up adding extra $ on to the tip because our server was awesome - but it still would have been nice for the restaurant to make you aware before you read your check."

  • "The food was great and the staff was very friendly and polite. However, I was under the assumption that it would be a more dressy crowd, since this was my anniversary dinner, but people were dressed in jeans and texting and being really loud. And they were all foreign tourists, which sometimes can ruin the mood. But obviously, you can't help that I guess, being in NYC. I think they all wanted to get away from the Olympics in their home country in Russia."

  • "Starting with the stale bread and ending with dessert. In a plastic cup, the food and service was extremely dissapointing. Then they added a 20% tip to the bill on a table for two people. Bottom line- stay away- your entertainment dollars would be better spent eleswhere."

  • "A friend recommended this spot - she said the noodles with vodka sauce was amazing - it was good... but not necessarily out-of-this-world. Observed a man taking polaroids of tables and I overheard one table say, "I cannot believe he wants $9 for this terrible picture..." - so that definitely made me think less highly of the establishment - kind of cheesy! If you need a decent Italian place to eat late at night in Little Italy, the Grotto will take care of you, but won't leave you hoping to return soon."

  • "Good standard southern Italian fare in the heart of Little Italy. We have eaten there many times over decades bit this was first time in some years. The old downstairs "Grotta" is now closed - used we were told for private parties. The wine list is laminated - a bad sign since it means unchanging availability although a relatively pricey listed 2007 Barolo was delivered as a 2009 and not mentioned by the waiter. However, the standards ARE good with ample portions. Lobster Fra diavolo was excellent and provided next day spaghetti dinner. Go to Ferrara's on Grand Street for dessert."

And initial service was good; but then after the salad we heard nothing for some time and then the waiter finally showed up and apologized for our dinner being late. For a party of 4 I was surprised they added a 20% tip....based on this service it was not going to be that high."

  • "I have been to many little Italy restaurants and grew up in an Italian family. The food here was okay, but nothing special. The waiter basically tricked us into ordering not so great garlic bread. I ordered the eggplant parm and my friend got simply the baked ziti. Again, it was okay but nothing special. Literally just eggplant with cheese and sauce on a plate with no side of pasta or veggie."

  • "I took my family out for our first Thanksgiving dinner in a restaurant. We all decided to break tradition and not order the turkey dinner special, instead we order our favorite italian dishes. Every one was very happy and satisfied with their meals, we tried each other's dishes and more importantly we were able to enjoy each other's conversations in a normal voice because of the low noise levels. The service was very friendly and attentive. Every one wants to return soon and enjoy the experience again and again."

  • "Table service was great . Wait staff was terrific.we liked having a water carafe on the table during dinner. The sangria was amazing. The food looked good but did not taste good . Chicken parm and marsala was very overcooked and difficult to cut with a hard knife. Seating was small and very overcrowded. We were at a table for 2 sandwiched between a table for 5 and 2 on either side. There was no special feeling or romance. We had plenty if time to get to our show since we didn't feel comfortable to stay long. The biggest dissatisfier was the food , the ambiance and the guy taking pictures. He presented us with a Polaroid picture that he told us we had to pay $9 for even though we didn't like it."

The caesar salad was drenched in dressing, the shrimp dish that my father ordered was heavy and soaking with butter, and the lasagna I ordered was just okay. The ambiance was nice and the servers were friendly, but I wouldn't go here again as it was pretty much your standard Little Italy restaurant."

They were extremely helpful and moved our reservation back when we were running late and ensured we had a corner table for some privacy as requested. We brought a cake from Caffe Roma across the street and they kept it in the cooler and served it at the end of the meal. The food was outstanding and the service was excellent!"

  • "We were seated immediately upon arriving, but from that point on everything else was mediocre at best. Very surprising since as a child my parents took us there once a year for a special outing to NYC. The service was essentially non-existent, the food taste was bland, and the presentation was unappealing. They even included a 20% gratuity on the check. Is that some relatively new NYC restaurant policy? Don't know! I'm not sure if it's under the same ownership from years ago, but either way they've lost me as a future customer."

  • "I used to frequent Grotta Azzura in the early 80's and always enjoyed the basement experience. I had very fond memories of many family dinners there. Last weekend, my Italian American friend was hankering for a chicken parm dinner on a Sunday nite with my wife and me. As we live in the neighborood, I suggested GA as a convenient place to satisfy her request. My wife and I joined her and sat outside on a nice Sunday evening. We ordered two linguini and white clams and one chicken catchetori. Chewy and salty. The chicken was all white meat with little to no evidence of veggies. No one finished our meals. GA TACKS ON A 20% SERVICE CHARGE. Not disclosed. Unconscionable. I apologize for all New Yorkers. Your choice. I'm a foodie. Not GA."
