A word from Grotta Azzurra
Founded in 1908 by the Davino family Grotta Azzurra was named for the blue grotto on the isle of Capri and designed to evoke the beauty of one of the worlds most famous caves in the world, intensified.

Enrico Caruso feasted here after performances, and Sinatra called it his one and only favorite Italian restaurant, making it the site of many a “Rat Pack” evening.

Shuttered for six years, Grotta Azzurra has now been stunningly renovated and rebirthed by a descendant renaissance for dining in Little Italy, with multi-talented chef Frank Castellana recreating the finest in Italian Cuisine.

I thought the food was okay but the atmosphere was great. Wife had spaghetti and meatballs and thought the meatballs were made of ground chicken. I had the Veal parmigiana and it was tough almost like it was pet made and not made to order

  • Human Hair in Dessert

While eating our dessert, my boyfriend found a human hair in his dessert. At first, I thought he was being funny; until I saw it myself. The Waiter turned red and apologized. Then, I guess he was the assistant manager--told us that the Manager was a little busy in the back of the house and he offered to give us a free coffee. He then tried to make an excuse for the problem. What excuse could there actually be??? Then, when the check came it actually, had a minus for the amount of dessert and "hair in dessert" on the actual check...WOW!!! I was having a good time up until then. I tried this place for Restaurant Week and I will keep my eye on my dessert if I ever go again.

The actual food was good and then at the end of the meal is when it all went wrong. We wanted to get a picture outside of the restaurant and where they made us stand got us totally wet. It had been raining and they put us in a situation where we got wet. They didn't even apologize and were very rude about it. They acted like it was our fault that we got wet.

I made reservations for my boyfriend's birthday and it met every expectation that I had hoped for - the ambiance was very romantic but also welcoming to families. Our waiter was very attentive but not too much that it gets annoying - and the food was EXCELLENT! We had sangria, appetizers and a meal each and had more than enough to eat - we even had leftovers. Coming from a very Italian-American home I am always skeptical about the authenticity of Italian food I eat out - that being said - I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back!!!

I came here with a $25 restaurant.com deal with a few friends. We each selected the $19 prefix which includes a pasta dish and an entree. The pasta was decent, with a very generous portion size. The entrees were terrible. Lack of seasoning on all of the dishes. Very disappointing.

Found this restaurant online. Don't understand why people did not like it. We went here after our daughter's college graduation. Wine very good. Had rice balls and oreganata clams for appetizers very good. Veal Marsala, Eggplant Parmesan which was on the pre-fixed menu very large portion!!!! Rigatoni alla vodka very good!!!! Veal Sorrentina two large pieces excellent!!!! Waitstaff was excellent, not to pushy but there when you needed them. Would come back to Grotta Azzura in a heart beat!!! Thanks for making our daughter's day even better!!!

The service is spectacular, the server was very helpful and they make you feel comfortable, but the food wasn't what I expected. I had steak and it lacked in flavor, my boyfriend had the chicken parm and felt that it was to rough, and cold. It was still a comfortable spot though.

There is nothing special about the store front to draw you in, but once inside, Grotta Azzurra has a very pleasant, old world ambiance. The food was excellent, with good portions at modest prices. The noise level was such that it was not difficult to carry on a conversation with those around you. I will be recommending Grotta to my friends and family. In summary, try it, you'll like it.

Server was very nice and good with our kids. No obvious kid selections but she did offer them kid portions/prices. Adult entrees were pretty good but not spectacular. Chianti was sub par, Pinot Grigio was very good, if a bit pricey. Tin ceiling made it loud. Doors open to outdoors had a nice cafe feel. We weren't rushed- again with thanks to our server.

Decent restaurant, wasn't too impressed though. I liked my dish but it was just chicken...you can't really mess up chicken. The other people in my party didn't care for their dishes. The service was a little slow even though it wasn't really busy at all, and we had to ask for the bread for the table, which is usually brought out with the waters when you first sit down. I didn't appreciate that gratuity was included for a party of 3; I feel it was a little high given the slow/lacking service. Also, we divided the bill (writing the cards and amounts on the back of the receipt) and the waiter charged the wrong amounts. The food wasn't delicious enough to overlook the lacking service.

Our server was fantastic. Answered every question we had and made fantastic recommendations. The food was amazing and the perfect size. The only complaint we had was that the gratuity was already added to our check for only 2 people. We ended up adding extra $ on to the tip because our server was awesome - but it still would have been nice for the restaurant to make you aware before you read your check.

The food was great and the staff was very friendly and polite. However, I was under the assumption that it would be a more dressy crowd, since this was my anniversary dinner, but people were dressed in jeans and texting and being really loud. And they were all foreign tourists, which sometimes can ruin the mood. But obviously, you can't help that I guess, being in NYC. I think they all wanted to get away from the Olympics in their home country in Russia.

A friend recommended this spot - she said the noodles with vodka sauce was amazing - it was good... but not necessarily out-of-this-world. Observed a man taking polaroids of tables and I overheard one table say, "I cannot believe he wants $9 for this terrible picture..." - so that definitely made me think less highly of the establishment - kind of cheesy! If you need a decent Italian place to eat late at night in Little Italy, the Grotto will take care of you, but won't leave you hoping to return soon.

Good standard southern Italian fare in the heart of Little Italy. We have eaten there many times over decades bit this was first time in some years. The old downstairs "Grotta" is now closed - used we were told for private parties. The wine list is laminated - a bad sign since it means unchanging availability although a relatively pricey listed 2007 Barolo was delivered as a 2009 and not mentioned by the waiter. However, the standards ARE good with ample portions. Lobster Fra diavolo was excellent and provided next day spaghetti dinner. Go to Ferrara's on Grand Street for dessert.

Pretty good standard Italian fair. They sat us immediately (we arrived early for our reservation). And initial service was good; but then after the salad we heard nothing for some time and then the waiter finally showed up and apologized for our dinner being late. For a party of 4 I was surprised they added a 20% tip....based on this service it was not going to be that high.
