  • "I am a real fan of the Kimpton brand. I've stayed at this hotel but have never eaten in the restaurant. Although I would stay there again, I won't eat there. Ever. The ambience is very bistro upscale with formal settings and few tables, probably not more than 20 covers. There were two occupied tables when we arrived. We ordered and 45 minutes later our food arrived. 45 minutes. Two more tables had arrived within that time. My daughter had the eggs benedict. One egg was literally hard boiled; the other was very runny. The muffin was hard, the table knife she was using was hard pressed to cut through the muffin. The Canadian bacon was cooked to the consistency of jerky; she could not chew it and had to put it aside. I had the french toast. The toast was barely warm and was thickly covered with cinnamon. I mean very, very thickly. I was able to scrape most of the cinnamon off the bread and could eat two of the pieces. We were both hungry after our long early morning walk. Probably the the major reason we didn't return the plate. So...long delay getting food despite a low number of people and extraordinarily poor food. Very disappointing."

  • "We were very disappointed with the food for brunch. My mother had the corn beef has had about 2 pieces of meat - no flavor. I had the omelet and there was hardly any cheese and again no flavor. My Dad had the hotcakes which were cold and whole wheat (but it didn't mention that on the menu). We were greatly disappointed."

  • "We had a lovely dinner. The staff were very helpful. The meal was very delicious. I would enjoy having a meal there again."

  • "We loved the ambiance of the restaurant and the service was attentive. I had the duck breast which was tasty but a very small portion and the side accompaniment was skimpy also. My date had the rockfish special of the day with rissoto and a lovely tangy endive and apple salad. The portion sizes were average and they were fresh and tasty. I had a glass of sangiovese wine and it was very good. I would definitely recommend the hotel and will give the restaurant another try if we come back because it is a very lovely dining area and bar and the wait staff were pleasant and personable."

  • "I've eaten dinner here in the past. I was staying in the hotel this weekend and decided to give breakfast a try. We were the only people in the place for a while. It was still fairly early as far as brunch goes. We started off with some beignets. They were just ok...nothing terribly special. I ordered the bison hanger steak with eggs. My eggs were way overcooked, but my steak was cooked to perfect medium rare. Hubby ordered corned beef hash. He said it was tasty and it was a rather large portion. The server disappeared quite a lot. We are pretty low maintenance, but I just found it sort of strange. All in all, it was a rather average experience."

  • "I had been looking forward to having an afternoon tea with a friend and the experience here included all that I hoped for. Lovely service, lots of tasty tea bites including scones with cream and individual pots of tea."

  • "The Grille features a contemporary colonialesque menu. The French soup is the best I have ever tasted. It isn't overly salty and the marrow crostini gives the soup its delicious personality! My main course was a bison hangar steak that was loaded with flavor. I really did not want the evening to end. There is live piano as well!"

  • "The Morrison House has a nice menu, but was much more limited than what appears on the website menu. Salads were good. Caperberries were added to the Caeser Salad, which was an interesting variation. We ordered two Salmon entrees, though the olive oil poached on the website was not available. One was ordered Medium rare and was ordered "cooked through"...Both came out cooked through which was disappointing. Service was good, although somewhat slow, with seemingly only one waiter in the grill dining room."

  • "I took my parents out while they were in town. The restuarant looks very clean and posh. The waiter was professional but we never saw him after the mid-way point of our dinner. The drinks were poorly made....all of them (mojito's, sidecars, moscow mules). The appetizers were average. I ordered bison steak and could only eat half of it as it was too tough and over-cooked (ordered medium rare). Everyone went home disappointed."

  • "45-60 minutes to be served a simple breakfast. Only 3 other tables at the time so what the heck were they doing in the kitchen. Maybe prepping for the baby shower in the main dining room....then they should have told us they couldn't serve us. Cold coffee no milk or sugar until we asked after 15 minutes. Stone cold toast that came out after the meal. Don't waste your time or money here"

  • "This restaurant was very intimate and romantic. The brunch options were very appealing. You had the option for brunch or just the regular breakfast items. If you are looking for that old Alexandria charm, this is a great place to go."

  • "I took my partner out to dinner here for his birthday, and we had a spectacular meal. I got the burger on the menu, and it was definitely the best burger I've had. He got the lazy man's lobster dinner (lobster out of the shell). We shared a lobster bisque, which was smooth and rich and very good. I got the parmesan garlic fries on the side, but they were just "okay." $10 for the fries, which is almost as much as the burger was, and they weren't as crispy and flavorful as I would've liked. For dessert we shared the profiteroles, which is my favorite dessert. They tried to make it fancier by using different ice creams, but I prefer plain vanilla for this dessert! Overall though, I enjoyed it as a special occasion meal."

  • "Took some out of town guests. We were waived over from the hotel lobby, standing awkwardly in the tiny piano bar/converted coat room for several minutes until our consistently indifferent (and repeatedly absent) waitress appeared from the kitchen and seated us. Drinks were not bad. Food was pretty underwhelming. I don't think I've ever been to a place this pricey, where I had to run someone down to get a check and without being offered to order dessert. Might go back for a drink...but dinner is doubtful"

  • "The Grill at Morrison House has the Old Virginia feel with top notch modern cuisine. From the moment we were greeted the service was superb. The bartender, Grant mixed good drinks, his twist on the French 75 was especially nice. Stephanie was just what we like in a server, friendly attentive but not overwhelming. The food was great -- the Lazy Man's lobster was delicious and plentiful served on Kale with risotto. The bison steak frites was cooked perfectly. Each of the four of us thought their dish was the best. Dessert was phenomenal. I had called ahead to arrange a birthday surprise nd the pastry chef, G.G., made perfect little cakes - the birthday girl was trilled. We will definitely return."

  • "Was looking for a great meal, but instead just had a great time. The piano bar rather than the dining room is the way to go. The service was top-notch. Didn't get drinks/dessert. Apps-onion soup (very rich, not recommended) & steak tartare (first time having, so can't adequately review; flavor was great, fries were FANTASTIC, that comes from a non-fry lover). Dinner-husband had carbonara (he liked, I didn't), I had the filet (steak was good, slightly over-cooked to medium, haricot verts were good, potatoes were out of a box-yes, most surely were potato flakes; I have never experienced this and would never expect it for the $35 plate I ordered). So come for a drink and the atmosphere. Bread and fries were the best items, so that's telling."

  • "For a relaxing, no rush brunch, this is the place to go. The food is very good, but too many egg dishes for people who can"t eat eggs or don't like them."

  • "My dish came out cold. Big celebration dinner with sensitive guests who are not comfortable with sending food back. Otherwise service was attentive. Very expensive dinner, very disappointed they got the basics wrong."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner in this New England style restaurant located within Old Town Alexandria. The staff was very friendly and the food delicious!"

  • "The food was fantastic as well as the cozy atmosphere. Very romantic. The staff was curtious, friendly and attentive. Prices were a bit on the high side, but well worth it. However, while the piano player was excellent, it was a bit forté (loud) for the intimate space."

  • " 2 years ago for brunch there were various stations for waffles, meat carving, fruit, pastries, omlettes etc. There was lovely music being played on the piano. Seating was in a separate room. It was a food experience well worth remembering. Now At brunch has been scaled down to no stations, no piano being played and tables in the bar area. You simply order from the menu. While our wait person was very good, the food was just ok. I was told that the hotel was doing more banquet parties so the "old brunch" service had been curtailed. The Grille has lost a unique service that provided it's guests a reason to return. The Grille no longer offers a dining experience that I would recommend for brunch. Such a shame!"

  • "My wife and I searched for a restaurant that would afford us a quiet and intimate dinner, despite being a Saturday night during Restaurant Week. The Grille at the Morrison House did not disappoint. We enjoyed a short walk to the Grille, arrived 15 mins before our reservation time, and only had to spend 5 mins at the bar before being seated. The venue had a great energy in the clientele and it seemed like the other patrons were all enjoying themselves. My wife had the gazpacho, salmon, chocolate tart, a cocktail and a riesling, while I had the steak tartare, filet mignon, profiteroles and single-malt scotch. We enjoyed every aspect of the dinner, and the walk home made for a perfect evening. Definitely recommended."

  • "This was a special dinner treat for 2 friends who have been very helpful to us. The food and ambience were very good, but the service could have been much better. First courses were served before wine was poured, and that was after a reminder to the waitress. One person ordered filet mignon, and that was not cooked as ordered. The server (not the waitress) dropped his dish of pomme frites on the way to the table. By the time this person's meat and potatoes came, the rest of us had almost finished eating. It was nice to have dinner in a pleasant and quiet place where we could enjoy visiting with our friends."

  • "We really enjoyed restaurant week the salmon and scallops. Our friends loved the Steak Tartare. And 3 of us introduced ourselves to a new, but actually old, cocktail - Sazarac. We would go back."

  • "Charming settting. Interesting situation with the dining room. I never saw a host stand nor a host or hostess and had to ask directions of the hotel concierge to get to the dining room. Someone seated the others in my party, but I have no idea who. The waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and offered good advice. The caeser salad was terrific, the salmon was excellent, and the coconut/lime and chocolate tarts were as well. This is a restaurant we would return to. It was especially nice that the Morrison House included several of its regular menu staples on the Restaurant Week menu; some establishments do not and it is always disappointing."

  • "A group of 8 offs from work decided to try it during Restaurant Week their menu had a large number of choices of variety. We were also offered the regular menu which had an awesome lobster dinner we considered, but decided we would be back to try that another time. We were seated in a beautiful private room (not requested) that made our evening even more special. We ordered wine pairings with our meals. Not one of the group had a single complaint about the dinners but one didn't like the Pinot choice with his fish but I loved mine! Did I mention the outstanding service? Everyone was still raving about the evening the next day at work. We all agreed we would be returning with family and friends for our next special night. Absolutely amazing!"

  • "Wow, my wife and I went for restaurant week and were very impressed. Everything we ordered was exceptional and had unique and complementing flavors. Our server was great and provided excellent wine pairing recommendations. I was skeptical when I saw it was attached to a hotel. However, this restaurant is one of the best within old town. Highly recommend it to visiting friends and family!"

  • "Similar to old world European pub houses, 2 small dining rms, bar anchors one end and fireplace on the other. The dining is upscale and menu is gourmet American with a French flair. We ordered from the Restaurant Week menu and added the wine pairing for $20, which was a bargain considering it included dessert wine. Especially enjoyed the steak tartar appetizer and the crispy skin salmon entree, also had the amish chicken entree, which was beautifully deconstructed so you didn't have to wrestle with chicken in a fancy restaurant. I took the profiteroles for dessert, which was presented as a trio, each with a different flavored gelato inside. Staff were very attentive, almost a little too much, understandable with a small room to operate."

  • "We ordered the gazpacho, petit filet mignon, lobster dinner, caesar salad, and an assorted cheese tray and were super impressed by the flavor of the food. The service was outstanding and the waiter was attentive to my allergy. I was a bit disappointed by the wines by the glass selection."

  • "Food lacked creativity and quality of the preparation was poor. The dining experience attempted to be very formal and seemed a bit antiquated. Overall, reviews online varied so we figured we would give it a shot but we would not recommend this place."

  • "In our most recent trip of many, the food and service were outstanding. The filet (med well) was done to perfection and extremely tender. The Scottish salmon (med rare) was moist, flakey and totally a delight to the taste. We did learn on this visit that we prefer the pomme frites (the best I've ever tasted) to the garlic fries (not that they're bad, just a personal preference). The escargot Wellington is truly superb. The deserts are a perfect ending to a wonderful meal. The bar service was a little slow, but the drinks were worth the wait, generous and well made."

  • "We celebrated a friends birthday and could not have selected a better place. The staff was absolutely outstanding and the menu, though limited, was outstanding on all counts. We were particularly impressed by the very succulent "Lazy man's Lobster". The classic martinis and Manhattans were perfect in every way. The desserts were to die for and the Port flights and coffee were the perfect ending to our celebration. Our bartender and waiter were the real stars. They made this a very special evening."
