Diner Reviews
  • "We try to dine at Griffin Market whenever we are in Beaufort. This is hands down the best restaurant in town. Last night we brought visiting foodie friends who are pretty knowledgable about wine, and we had a tremendous time. We shared the mixed seafood salad, the marinated anchovies, the tagliatelle verde, and the tagliatelle bolognese. We shared the boar sausage over polenta, and our friends had one of the chicken dishes. Oh my goodness. Each dish was better than the last. However, there is no word for Chef Laura's tagliatelle bolognese other than ethereal. Ricardo is always entertaining, and helped our friends select wines that paired perfectly with our dishes. There are simply not enough superlatives for Griffin Market."

  • "There are not enough adjectives to describe the culinary delights to be found at Griffin Market. Chef Laura Bonino is, quite simply, a master of using locally sourced (many farm to table and ocean to table) ingredients prepared in the delightful traditions of Piedmont, Italy. Her exquisite preparations will make you want to jump up and down and say BRAVISIMO! Chef Laura's delicacies are complemented by an absolutely INCREDIBLE wine selection expertly paired by husband Riccardo Bonino. Your taste buds be thrilled by the food but they will want to sing with joy from Griffin's excellent, excellent wine selection and pairings. Our last visit was 7/3/14 and we delighted in a 9-course chef's tasting...one of our top 5 meals...ever...anywhere!"

  • "If you enjoy good food and with an interesting Italian twist you will have a delightful culinary experience. The melon soup with crab meat and the cold anchovies were a wonderful start to the summer meal. The entree excite the pallet, always a food adventure. Only the freshest in season ingredient are used in the preparation of all dish."

  • "overpriced. its really a wine bar with food as a side, but the food is way overpriced and the portions are small. Wine list is awesome."

  • "My friend wanted go to go to see what Sunday night prix fixe was all about. She was blown away. My favorite was the charcuterie and the tagliatelle fromagi"

  • "Took my dad here for his birthday and everything was amazing. He's full blood Italian so he's very picky when it comes to Italian dining and even he was overly impressed."

  • "I put together a group of 6 diners ......... all much more educated than myself on food & wine. I knew it would be pricey so that was not a problem. They enjoyed the experience ...... I did not. The bill was over $700. I would comment on the things that did not go well, but I could tell the owner had absolutely no interest in what I might say. I did note it use to be a favorite spot for Dataw residents but there is not much positive said now in the community notes. (We live elsewhere) I'm surprised that with the price, service and all the rules that are presented, the restaurant is still in business. I will not be a return customer."

  • "The Sunday Pre Fixe dinner (4 courses for $36) is an exceptional value in every way. Best Italian food we've had anywhere in the area and comparable to the best we have ever eaten. Attentive service and never felt rushed. The owner was there, always keeping an eye out for anything that might be done to improve the diner's experience. He also makes great recommendations for wine to pair with the food. The patrons that night included other couples like us, a single diner, a larger group of couples and a table of young women celebrating a birthday. It was just right for everyone. The fact that the place is small lends a cozy atmosphere to the dining, without being at all crowded. Incomparable wine list!"

  • "Husband and wife owners. Ricardo makes you feel welcomed, has extensive knowledge of his wines. Laura is the hands on chef, fresh ingredients only come from the kitchen. Food is wonderful! Best italian food outside of Italy!"

  • "Five of us went recently for a birthday celebration. Although all of the meal was wonderful, the pastas were outstanding. They are cooked to perfection with mouth-watering sauces. We were a bit dubious about trying the kale pasta, but it, too, was delicious. The "secondi" courses were all well prepared. While Griffin Market does not have a large menu, everything we've tried has been exceptional. "

  • "On my first visit to Beaufort from the foothills of North Carolina, I had heard about Griffin Market from a retired couple, newly relocated to Beaufort. This was their favorite restaurant. On advance scout of the location, I was stymied, eventually using Google live view to identify the building - no exterior signage! Needless to say, there is clearly no need to advertise to passers by. This was the finest Italian dining my wife and I have ever experienced - gourmet courses, perfectly prepared and presented. We hope to return some day."

  • "My favorite restaurant in Beaufort or Bluffton. It is always interesting as the menu changes depending what is in season, so never tire of the menu. "

  • "On par with the best meals I had in Italy last year. Even though it is located in a town near the ocean with great seafood restaurants, you should carve out one night to eat here."

  • "This is an absolutely delightful restaurant with wonderful food. Ricardo has a fine wine selection and I always have him choose something for us. We are never disappointed. I highly recommend Griffin Market!!"

  • "Everything was perfect. I especially like how the chef comes over after the meal to ask how we liked it and the staff seems to really care about making the experience memorable. The is the only restaurant in Beaufort with unique food that would be difficult to replicate in my kitchen."

  • "This is the best of all that is associated with a small restaurant, populated by well heeled locals who enjoy a glass of wine from Piedmont with fresh pasta or fresh seafood for lunch. It just can't be beat. A foodie find."

  • "We visited Beaufort for several days and ate at 4 lovely restaurants. The food at Griffin Market was my favorite! I had a for my antipasti ricotta cheese with herbs on toast, with honey. It was the right combinations of savory and sweet and was lovely. My entree was a green kale tagliatelle that was wonderful. My husband had the duck and kept finding things wonderful to say about it. Extensive wine list with good help picking out the right wine. It was a wonderful meal and and we enjoyed it very much!"

  • "The food is always fantastic - real deal Italian. Great wine list - the Barolo was delicious and the owner brought over a 1989 Barolo for me to compare to the one I had ordered. A memorable experience. Unfortunately the service was also memorable. The owner brought over the initial glass of wine I ordered, but I was never asked again for another. I waited and finally had to tell our waiter I would like another glass Seems like they would want to sell more wine. Also the waiter was polishing silverware and after waiting for 20 minutes after we were clearly done I had to physically wave him over. Too bad that was what I take away from the meal. Think the owner should hire staff with the same level of service he has."

  • "As always the menu was wonderful. We went this past Sunday for Mother's Day. Laura and Ricardo the owners made eating at their place a special occasion. We received a friendly greeting at the door and were seated promptly. The prefix menu on Sundays allows for a generous sampling of three appetizers, two of six tempting choices of first and second entrees, and a three selection of desserts. It is a great place to try a new wine since Ricardo is very knowledgable of what will go well with your selections and taste preferences. Thanks for the amazing dinner on Mom's day! "

  • "Ricardo and Laura are the perfect partnership to make you feel welcome and well fed. I had the vitello to start then penne with 4 cheeses then the oxtail. And for dessert..a caramel budino..to die for. Try the camomile digestif. All perfectly and succulently prepared. Wines were perfectly matched with the food. Beautiful presentation. 5 star. Our repeat visits are soaring. Excellent value."

  • "The food is consistently superior at Griffin Market. It is owner run and operated and special attention is given to each dish by the owner, chef and her husband who runs the front of the house. The pasta is made daily and is as good as the best Ive ever had. The menu is relatvely small and changes frequently. Ive seen the owners shopping at the farmers market buying seasonal items. "

  • "Intimate, family run restaurant that surprised us with individually prepared, unique and delicious Northern Italian dishes. My favorite course was dessert...the butterscotch budino custard with sea salt caramel may have been one of the best desserts I have ever had. But from the bread course, to the seafood appetizer, to my pasta entree, I enjoyed every bite. After dinner ended, the last 3 couples in the restaurant just sat and talked for an hour while the owners cleaned and I felt like I was in Italy."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyable. We arrived hungry and we shared the second course, a pasta, so that we could try all three courses as suggested on the menu. I'm glad we did - everything was delicious! The service was great, with both our server and the owner checking on us. We will definitely be back."

  • "Best experience in Beaufort, and just about anywhere! It's the next best thing to being in the Italian Piedmont. The wine list is unlike anything I have ever seen, and am completely spoiled now. Nothing else compares. And the food...words cannot do it justice. This is an experience not to be missed!"

  • "Every time we go we are made to feel welcome from Riccardo the owner, and wife, chef, Laura. He spends time with you and addresses every need and question. The food is great, and the wine list impressive. It is a small place with a homey feel, and once there, the table is yours. Never made to feel rushed; it's like visiting family. Great for lunch or dinner. A place we like to take visitors."

  • "We are P/T residents of the Beaufort area and thia was our second time at Griffin Market. In our opinion the food is tops in the area. Everything is cooked from scratch and tastes fresh. The menu changes daily which means more variety. Very laid back atmosphere and you never feel rushed. Wine list is outstanding. We will return everytime we come back."

  • "This restaurant is a gem. No need to spend thousands of dollars on a flight to Milan for northern Italian food. Come here instead. Just don’t expect eggplant parmesan or fettuccine alfredo….this is this real deal. How did Beaufort land such an incredible restaurant?"

  • "What a great place. It is certainly the gem it's hyped to be. Special atmosphere inside give you the feeling of true Italian dining. I would strongly recommend this for couples who want to enjoy an evening of food and companionship. We were never pushed, and we felt welcome from the time we were greeted at the door."

  • "Loved the variety of seasonal specialities. The owner made excellent recommendations for the table and while I was initially suspect of the portion size, we were very pleased. The homemade pasta was equal to the food I had in Rome and Florence. It is not a traditional Italian/American restaurant and that's fine with me!"

  • "Four of us went to the Griffen Market for lunch on a Friday. We all agreed that the appetizers were the best we have eaten in the Low Country. The owner was very helpful in choosing a wine to go with our meal and we all chose a main pasta dish and they were all delicious! We would recommend this restaurant for a real Italian experience."

  • "Every seat was occupied for the Sunday night prixe fix tasting menu...and I understand why. It was a memorable meal and quiet enough for a conversation. My only caveat is that you plan this to be your entire evening's activity as the delicious and classic Northern Italian food is lovingly prepared by the owner's wife with only one assistant. We arrived at 7:30 and left at 10:00 PM. Still, it was a perfect evening of exquisite food served at a leisurely pace. I will book it again and again. The wine list is amazing; selections made by someone with real knowledge."

  • "We lived in Italy for several years and have eaten at many great restaurants. This was one of the best we have experienced in the continental USA. Everything was more than we hoped for. Service & food were excellent. We would have enjoyed a nice espresso at the end of our meal but the owner Ricardo apologized saying that he does not currently serve espresso because to have the quality machine he would want to make the perfect espresso would not be practical for the few customers that would request it. He refuses to "cut-corners" and serves only products that meet his high standards. That is why his menu and the impressive wine selection is the best in our opinion. We'll definitely be back for another great meal when we return to Beaufort."
