Diner Reviews
  • "I'm taking off a star because of the hot, steamy, sauna-like atmosphere. I would eat here every day, if they would update their air conditioning system to accommodate the restaurant's cooling needs. It's like the tropics in there. The service is lackluster and unfriendly. The staff is aloof, hurried, and just plain apathetic. The management and ownership obviously perpetuates this service climate, because I've dined here for many years, read many complaints about it, and nothing ever changes. The food is sublime. We always do the chef's tasting menu. The dishes are all a feast for the eyes and palate. If you can overlook the service and comfort, you'll be fine."

  • "We met out of town friends at GZ Saturday and really enjoyed our meal. Our favorites were the Hen of the Woods Mushroom Pate, Housemade Ramen Noodles, Black Bean Pot Stickers, Grilled Spring Asparagus and the Fresh Cavatelli Pasta. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and helpful. She helped us select a lovely Chablis. I didn't make a note to myself and have forgotten the vintner. This is a beautiful restaurant and very conversation friendly -- at least in the earlier part of the evening. It's always a special treat to dine here."

  • "The meal was enjoyed by all four in the group. As promised, the non-vegetarians did not feel deprived and the one who is vegan loved everything she tried. Everything was presented attractively. Nice variety of textures, colors and seasonings from the creamy polenta and risotto, slightly spicy buratta on tabuleh to the crispy black bean pot stickers. Lovely meal"

  • "Upscale, fine dining for vegetarians! A totally vegetarian restaurant with creative and delicious food. Many dishes can be adapted to be vegan, and there is a nice cocktail and wine list, making for a great dining experience. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Difficult to say the same thing repeatedly and not grow boring: Our experience here has been uniformly excellent, period! (All more particular remarks I have made previously continue to apply.)"

  • "It is amazing how flavorful and imaginative the vegetarian dishes are, every appetizer and main entrée a true gourmet treat. The drawback is the noise level, a jet engine din that made conversation virtually impossible."

  • "My husband and I decided on Green Zebra for our anniversary dinner after hearing about their independence day BBQ fixed menu, which sounded amazing! In addition to the standout food and wine pairings, we received special attention ("happy anniversary" printed on the menu, complimentary bubbly) because it was our anniversary. We were so impressed with the wonderful service and amazing attention to detail. We love Green Zebra, and will absolutely be back!!"

  • "I've been a regular here since it opened, blazing the trail for elevated vegetarian dining in Chicago. The preparations are creative and delicious. It's virtually impossible to choose from the menu - everything is fantastic, so it's great that the concept is "small plates" and you order 3-4 per person. They also have a lovely wine list and exotic cocktail offerings."

  • "Delicious food, exquisitely prepared. Engaging variety on menu items. Staff successfully presents the menu but you can't go wrong on choices. Every selection is savored. Try the mushroom pate or the black bean potstickers. Above average wine selection. Attentive and friendly staff. Green Zebra is on a short list of predictably fine Chicago dining."

  • "What a joy to see vegetarian food presented like the chef loved the food too!"

  • " Among the best I have had!fixed price menu is a good value. House-made non-alcoholic drinks are a special treat."

  • "I had eaten at Green Zebra before, so knew to expect excellent vegetarian cuisine, flawlessly executed. The kitchen didn't disappoint this time either. But service was another matter. I found our main server to be brusque at best, and certainly he did not read the situation well, especially when it came to dessert. I indicated that I wanted a substantial dessert and he recommended the least filling item on the dessert menu. And then he plunked the bill down on our table without giving me the option of ordering another--which I had indicated I might well do if I didn't find the first choice sufficiently filling. What could have been a great meal became a mixed experience because of uneven service, though the other servers were great.."

  • "We had a guest from SF who is vegetarian and a gourmet cook. The evening was perfect as the server made wonderful suggestions and the food was superb with astonishing flavors. The mushroom pate and creamy polenta were our favorites from our selections and filling. My wife and I are not vegetarian and had eaten at Green Zebra when it first opened years ago. It was very good then, but certainly this time it was better than we remembered. A most refreshing evening where conversation was easy and the ambiance delightful. If you have not returned from a prior visit, we suggest you do as it was a great choice."

  • "The dinner was great, interesting dishes with good flavor. The dessert was the only lacking course, ours was gluten free and needed some moisture."

  • "Food wise, everything was almost perfect. The Asian style ramen noodles were sitting in a way too salty broth but the flavors were great! We shared everything and everything pleased us. The burata, we'll balanced, spiciness and texture...perfect! The flat bread plate: awsome! The dessert was spot on, and again full flavored. What would I change to improve? Smiling waiters, less unnecessary table presence (busboy). More smiles gives more fun to the experience. My 2 cents"

  • "I am a vegan and my husband is vegetarian --- there was more selections for him, though I was able to order some made vegan. I really enjoyed what I had, however I would have enjoyed it better if I had a few more options to choose from. I would definitely go back with with friends--- the flatbread was excellent!"

  • "Nice to have a vegetarian/vegan restaurant in the Noble Square/Ukrainian Village neighborhood. The Polenta and Risotto we ordered was delicious. Ordering several small plates and sharing is a great way to taste all the different dishes they offer. For those who do not drink alcohol, they have a great list of non-alcoholic drinks and serve hot tea in an iron tea pot (great selection of teas)."

  • "The rhubarb menu was wonderful and the wine paring was excellent. My family and I always enjoy eating at Green Zebra. It is wonderufl to have a great vegetarian/vegan place to go with a menu that offers local, sustainable and well prepared food."

  • "In an earlier review I said it's "always the same!": never a bad meal here. With the series of themed tasting-menus--one particular ingredient, in season at the time, recurring in each of four courses--it's also always different. The idea may sound like a gimmick; it isn't: Chef-de-cuisine Dubois creates--this word may seem a bit pretentious, but it's the right word here--a series of dishes, very different from one another, all using the thematic ingredient--sometimes conspicuously, others more subtly, but always in a complex and wonderful combination. The effect is that a four-course meal is rather like a four-movement musical work. And the wine-pairings with these meals are wonderfully appropriate to the dishes. I must stop--out of space!"

  • "We have planned to go to GZ for years but always found something newer or (seemingly) "better" than "just eating vegetables". We lament the flawed reasoning and having waited so long for our first try. GZ is not about couching vegetables as meat to show carnivores the evil of their ways. What they do is prepare vegetables with skill, knowledge, and amazing flavor creativity. Each dish that we tried was seemingly better than the last, amazing dish. Sadly, the risotto came out last but by that point we were too stuffed to eat it all...and we mourn the waste of such excellence! The only negative: the couple with the squealing brat at an adult restaurant taking flash photos that made it look like there was a lightning storm raging!"

  • "The food was delicious and fun. The tables were intimate. Great date spot. The decor was unimpressive, dull, and lackluster. The service was quick and unfriendly. The overall experience was not the best, but the food was great and memorable, so I will recommend it to others. The chickpea soup alone is worth returning for. Great cocktails. Fresh, summery, and interesting ingredients."

  • "My wife is vegetarian so on occasion we like to go to entirely vegetarian places so she can have full pick of the menu. This time we wanted to somewhere expensive and gourmet. Green zebra is good food, but not as gourmet as we expected, especially for the price. Tasting menu was good and wine pairing was a pleasant surprise. Probably won't return as we continue to search for a top class vegetarian restaurant as good as the regular restaurants we go to."

  • "The decor at the Green Zebra is polished Zen. Calming and restorative. Efficient and friendly staff provide the perfect dining experience. The food which is creative provides one of the most interesting and exciting vegetarian experiences in the City. We enjoyed a rich pate of Morel mushrooms, crispy wontons filled with a bean paste, a pasta dish with kale and more earthy morel mushrooms, a slivered asparagus salad. The desert of avocado ice creme with desert with keynotes of grapefruit, meringue was both delicate and indulgent. Sophisticated and complex. The perfect restaurant for gourmets who care about the environment and expect a high quality food adventure. This is a restaurant to keep discovering season after season."

  • "GZ is one of my all time favorites (in the world!). It's best to order a few small plates and share - because each one is delicious and amazing and you don't want to miss out on any of the succulent flavors. I can't stop thinking about the stuffed mushrooms over quinoa.....so good! My husband, a non-vegetarian, feels the same way. The food is great and the staff is friendly and attentive."

  • "We are frequent diners here and this time we came with a group of friends. It was a lovely, leisurely meal - never rushed, and everything was delicious. Service is attentive but not obtrusive, and the food is always fantastic. This is not a restaurant of fake "chicken, shrimp and burgers". This is a vegetarian place that knows how to make vegetables into satisfying, flavorful, and unique dishes. An absolute favorite of mine!"

  • "We went here for a special occasion with another couple. We had the chef's tasting menu, and were ever so glad that we did!! Everything was delicious, and so very interesting. Morel Mushrooms first, then a garlic cream soup, a homemade pasta, a fourth course that I can't remember (sorry) and a passion fruit mousse. Each one of these was excellent. There were so many good things to try on the menu that we let the chef choose for us. I guess we will just have to return ... oh, darn!!"

  • "Loved green zebra! we went for my friends grad dinner. The food was amazing! loved the potato hash and the cheese plate! ...the service was slow not going to lie, but it was priced just right and would be a perfect dining spot for carnivores as well!"

  • "Wonderful exotic vegetarian food that even a carnivore could love. Only drawback: while the unusual spices help make the food unique, at times they get a bit too intense."

  • "Outstanding food. Very disappointing service. Awkward table, neighbor set up. And although it can be a very romantic spot, you seem to be so far from the other persona at the table. It's odd. There are unnecessary quirks to it, but with a slight bit a tweaking, it could really be an amazing place."

  • "this was a great restaurant experience. The room is beautifully decorated in quiet and restful colors. When I arrived was concerned about leaving on time for the theater. The major D offered to catch a cab 4 me when the time came. Which was a great relief. The Merrell tasting menu was extraordinary. Three courses each one better than the first. The accompanying wine flight was acceptable. Not at all as good as the food. So make wine choices yourself. I will definitely return when I'm in Chicago in the future. I have been seeking a vegetarian restaurants in cities I've visited. This is by far the best."

  • "When I made the reservations I mentioned it was my husband's 60th birthday. The menus were personalized and ready Happy 60th Birthday Mike. It blew us all away. They brought us the dessert menu but we were full, didn't matter because they then brought out a complimentary dessert with a candle, very low key, no singing, it was lovely. They did all of that without our asking, simply because it was mentioned that we were celebrating his birthday when I made the reservation. "

  • "Reservation at 6pm. The door was locked. We had to ask the kitchen help smoking on the sidewalk to open the door. Weird. It took over 30 minutes to get desert - ice cream and after that was served someone brought the forgotten soup for our guest. Very bad. Eh, we won't be back. "
