Diner Reviews
  • "Some of the food was excessively salty. Portions were pretty but very small and expensive."

  • "A friend wanted a recommendation for a good vegetarian restaurant in Chicago. Having been to Green Zebra several times and sampling from their menu, I knew that there was no way to go wrong with suggesting the restaurant. By the end of the meal, my friend agreed. It was outstanding. For anyone who wants to delve into vegetarianism, I think Green Zebra would be the best way to go. And if you really want to cut meat out of your diet cold-turkey, Green Zebra is the only way to do it in Chicago."

  • "This was a great pick for our Mom's birthday dinner! The staff was very warm and attentive to our occasion. Although small, aesthetically, the setting was very nicely done. Our party appreciated the small plates for all to share! I appreciated that the dishes were all very distinctly different and exciting in their own way... important for a vegetarian establishment. We will come again!"

  • "Impeccable service, outstanding food, and great ambience. Very accommodating for vegans. I highly recommend trying the tasting menu with the non-alchoholic beverage pairing! However, I would not recommend getting dessert, they tend to be disappointing."

  • "I was looking forward to dining at this restaurant since I had read outstanding reviews. This was a special evening with my cousin who lives in the city but I live out of state. We were both disappointed as the items we ordered seemed bland and not distinctive I have been a vegetarian for over 40 years and this seemed to miss the mark compared to many other fine dining vegetarian places through out the USA. The portions were small and did not seem that interesting. I hope we went on an "off night". The noise level was loud and not a place for an intimate conversation."

  • "I brought my girlfriend here for Valentines day. The special four course meal was outstanding, she took advantage of the vegan options and was just as impressed. (I will be forever trying to replicate that red pepper soup.) The wine pairings for each course were as impressive as the food. It was all so good and the portions were big enough that I regretted that I couldn't finish off the last two courses. All of the staff were extremely friendly and pleasant. We will definitely be dining here for future special occasions."

  • "If you don't know where the Green Zebra is located, you can easily miss it. No extraordinary commercial signs on the outside of the building on the corner of a not too inspiring street are shouting for attention. But entering the bamboo-surrounded restaurant, you are easily caught by the atmosphere, indicating the superb class of the place. It was good to receive help of the great hosts with the menu, as there are many unknown options to explore; choosing the Chef's menu accompanied by some smaller dishes appeared to be an excellent choice! During the diner more taste-buds have been touched than before, meaning that even an experienced meat-eater will be pleasantly surprised by the exceptional tastes of some of the dishes. A great place!"

  • "My husband and I ate at the Green Zebra on a weekend trip to Chicago. We ordered the chef's menu with the wine pairing. The food was excellent and well presented. The portions were small, however, even for a 5 course meal. Just a very small taste of each course. VERY expensive. For myself and my husband, it was just under $200!! (The chef's menu alone is $55, plus another $33 if you choose to do it with the wine pairing.) I would definitely go again, but would order off the regular menu next time!!"

  • "We love the food here and have been here a number of times. I am not a vegetarian and the food here is wonderful. We did the chef's tasting menu this time and really enjoyed it. Interesting combinations, excellent flavors, and beautiful presentations. The place is always crowded on Saturday nights (the only time we have ever been here because we come from out of town). This was the first time we had a waitstaff person who was not very good. The manager, hostess, bartender, food runners, etc. were all great and made up for Sarah."

  • "We've been to the Green Zebra several times, and each time is a new and wonderful experience. This weekend's trip delighted. One of us got the chef's tasting menu, while the other ordered a la carte. Every single dish was a winner. Our favorites were the mushroom pate and the sweet potato risotto (which had the most stunning presentation - just beautiful to behold). Hope we can make it back to Chicago soon to visit the Green Zebra again!"

  • "overpriced experience. Good food but small portions"

  • "My friend and I had the chef's week prix fixe menu. Each course had one or two items that could be ordered vegan. The food was delicious, and the service was perfectly paced."

  • "We have been dining at Green Zebra almost since its first day and we have never been disappointed; on the contrary, we have always been delighted with the restaurant. This past visit took place during Chef Week. The chef did himself proud. We had one of the best meals we have ever had at this restaurant. The waiter was professional. Our hostess was most friendly and personable. We do not live in Chicago at present but try to eat at Green Zebra whenever we are in t own. By the way, my husband is a Nebraskan and has never met a steak, hamburger, or sausage that he does not like; but he never misses meat at Green Zebra and even suggests we go there instead of to a steak house. What better recommendation than that can we give?"

  • "This review would have been better if they didn't serve porridge as the main dish. It wasn't good but the manager was nice enough to offer us an extra plate of pumpkin cheese cake."

  • "I enjoyed the meal overall and had four dishes in total. The fettuccine was divine. It was the only dish that had a beautiful balance and good presentation. The other dishes were plated in a manor more befitting the turn of the century and I don't care for the sauces dripped around the plate haphazardly. It makes each bite too inconsistent. There also seemed to be too many people waiting on me. My main server, the hostess, a floor manager, two bussers and two other servers. One server didn't know the dish he set in front of me. The dessert was the most underwhelming. The brownie actually seemed to lack flavor and the texture of the crumb was off. Overall it was good and interesting but misses the mark for the price range."

  • "Wonderful food. Artistically presented. Wine and speciality soft drinks were exceptional. Internal setting of the restaurant is beautiful. elegant yet comfortable place to dine. Somewhat eccentric waitstaff -- backwaiter was more obtrusive than we expected. The various courses were really tasting portions rather than robust portions making the total bill somewhat pricier than I would have expected. This is definitely a pricey restaurant that I would reserve for special occasions."

  • "Our waiter was the worst that we can ever remember so rude, he clearly did not want to be there. This was a special meal for a birthday, we called ahead to arrange for a cake, this never happened even though I confirmed with the hostess and waiter. As far as the food, way too small of portions and way over priced. Our table might as well have been in the kitchen/men's room. We complained about the waiter on the way out, and they actually said they know he is bad and always unhappy, amazing. They said they would be sure to seat us in another section when we come back... we will never be back. I am very sorry that open table got us a table, when we called they said they had not time available."

  • "I went with a party of 4 for my bday and everything was perfect, the food delicious and the staff accommodating. We had to wait 60 min but were offered a drink and snacks on the house in the mean time. Once seated, we ordered the tasting menu. That was a splendid idea as everything was delicious; for some reason, though, our waiter thought we would like 2 tasting menus, not 4. We corrected the issue starting from the 2nd course and everything went okay after that. The food is absolute goodness: surprising, full in flavor and well constructed. Good wine list, for affordable prices (39$/bottle). We added to the tasting the duck egg: it was superb. Topped it off with a glass of amaro and paid 300$ including tip. I will most certainly go back!"

  • "My niece recommended this restaurant and I was skeptical since I'm not a vegetarian. I would definitely go back - the food was wonderful. Loved the decor too. And our server was extremely attentive and accommodating. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "This is probably the best vegetarian restaurant Chicago has to offer. And I've been looking for a while. And it's one of those places which tries to replicate meat. They make truly genuine vegetarian food"

  • "Had a great dining experience, girlfriend is a vegetarian and loved it. I am not a vegetarian but found the food just amazing and delicous. Presentation was great, service was fantastic! Definately will be visiting again on future trips to Chicago!"

  • "These are not your grandmother's vegetables. Start with beautiful presentation. Then savor the flavors and the textures. You don't have to be a vegetarian to love the food. The biggest problem is deciding what to order from a menu chocked full of good choices. The green, clean atmosphere is very inviting and matches the vibe of the food. Outside signage is subtle - and there's no valet - so keep you eyes out for the restaurant and find parking on the side street, if you don't want to pay the meter."

  • "Food and presentation get big ups - flavorful and pretty to look at - very tasty. Server was attentive, but a bit robotic - not very friendly. Also, I realize it was a Friday night and it started getting busy, however it was fairly obvious that we were expected to move on. It's not even like we were lingering, we were still eating dessert and drinking our coffee, and the hostess came to pick up our bill, that was just placed on our table. She looked inside and we had not even looked at it yet, so there was nothing inside. She came back the second we put our forks down to "check In." The waiter was back a couple of minutes later. The end of our meal felt like we were being circled by sharks!"

  • "My partner and I have been dining here for years, particularly for special occasions, and every meal has been delicious and memorable. Food and drinks are outstanding, inventive, beautiful. They have a lovely wine selection, but I especially enjoy their creative mixed drinks and home-made soda (try the pink peppercorn thyme soda!). The menu changes according to what foods are in season, and fresh ingredients make each dish shine. Very high quality service; great attention to detail while also being genuine and down to earth. Our parents are not vegetarian, and they absolutely love and remember each meal we shared at Green Zebra. Also a plus, Green Zebra is very attentive to dietary restrictions, including food allergies."

  • "My wife (vegetarian) and I enjoyed our dinner at Green Zebra this week. We have dined at Green Zebra several times over the past few years and it is one of our favorite (splurge) places to eat a high-end dinner. What I like about Green Zebra is the unique tasting food which always offers some interesting flavors and combinations. For example, I had a delicious Burrata/Freekeh dish that was exploding with flavor - I loved the smokey flavor provided by the grilled greens on top . The menu changes frequently with what is in season. Our dinner wasn't perfect, but it was close. One dish was a bit oversalted, but other than that, what a wonderful experience. I recommend this place to anyone who loves food, whether they are vegetarians or not."

  • "My wife is vegetarian, and I always struggle to find restaurants that offer interesting, thoughtful vegetarian options. The Green Zebra is a fantastic vegetarian restaurant that always leaves us both satisfied. Dishes are served up tapas style to give you the option to explore many different flavors in a single visit. Food is thoughtfully prepared - think French vegetarian cuisine. Location is a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the trip."

  • "Green Zebra is one of my favorite places to dine in Chicago. The food is always super fresh and delicious and there's always something new to try. Meat eaters will be so busy licking their plates they won't even notice there wasn't meat on the menu!"

  • "Only two of the dishes - the acorn squash dumplings and maitake mushrooms - really wowed us. Given the combination of small portions and high prices (especially for vegan dishes), I was expecting amazing food, not just good food. We ordered six dishes, split them between two people, and left still hungry and almost $100 poorer, after taxes and tip. We filled up on dessert at the Chicago Diner instead."

  • "My wife and I are somewhat new to vegan ism. Our server was patient and helpful. The food was excellent. Wish it was not so far from Texas."

  • "Second time at Green Zebra. Food is just AMAZING - every single blessed item is a win. Portions are very small, so go prepared to spend what's required to order 4 items a piece (not including dessert) and don't be embarrassed to do it. Among the scrumptious things we had were the Burrata alla Panna, Celery Root Soup, and Acorn Squash Dumplings. Only criticism was the abalone mushroom that is on top of the White Corn Polenta Cake is just....strange. But what's underneath is delectable, especially the braised kale. Wish they would skip the mushroom and just make the polenta cake larger. Also, word to the wise, the fresno peppers in the Werp Farm salad have the same Scoville rating as jalapenos. Should have googled that first :)"

  • "Chef Shawn McClain's Green Zebra is one of the best restaurants in Chicago, and arguably the best vegetarian restaurant in the Midwest. Creations are always innovative and impeccably prepared and presented. It is a treat to go here, whether you prefer to eat meat or not. If you live in the area, you owe it to yourself to make a trip to Chicago Avenue and Green Zebra"
