Diner Reviews
  • "My husband had an enjoyable dinner with a salad and the sea bass as his entree. I ordered the french dip anticipating a true diner type sandwich that I grew up with. The bread was very light and crisp, but the meat had no flavor and the au jus dip was quite boring. For dessert we ordered the apple pie which was also very boring since the crust was not flaky at all, it was almost doughy tasting and the apples were overcooked. I think that this restaurant has the potential to improve and maybe should try to stay with the classic way of cooking traditional dishes."

  • "Very cute neighborhood restaurant. Decor is 1960's and it resembles a coffee shop. The service was outstanding. The food is good and if I lived in the neighborhood I'm sure I would dine there often. The bartender was busy as they have a full bar with some creative cocktails. Pie is a specialty but our dinner was too filling to go for it although it was tempting. My husband and I shared a pear and burrata salad. It was an unusual combination of tastes and I would suggest that. My husband had the special which was black cod and was happy with his dinner. I had the french dip and was not as happy. Maybe it's best to go with the special. "

  • "The food was fantastic, especially their maple bacon doughnuts. The service was a bit slow, but startlingly pushy... I felt like we were rushed to order and then leave. We ignored that and stayed to enjoy our time, so it wasn't an issue."

  • "So glad we made reservations! While the place was packed to the gills, we were seated immediately. Our server was very knowledgeable & helpful, giving us very honest opinions of the fare. Everyone loved their selections, including the delicious drinks. What a wonderful brunch experience!"

  • "The food & service were great. It was really loud (lots of kids). It seemed that they tried to put the non-kid diners together. Great idea but way too many tables in a small space. My husband and I arranged for a sitter to enjoy a nice meal where we could chat. This was not that place."

  • "My parents were in town for just one night so my husband and I took them to Great Maple. Everyone LOVED their cocktails, their meals, and the wine and dessert that we all shared. It was a fantastic time - my dad is a total foodie and he just kept exclaiming about how good everything was. :D Thanks for the awesome time!"

  • "Very interesting dinner menu. It is rare that I actually have trouble ordering, since few things appeal to me that I can't make at home. Desserts are beyond belief. Don't even really love apple pie, but this made me a convert. Lemon blueberry pie tart and delicious. I had tofu stack with pesto and sun dried tomatoes and eggplant. Yum Only downside was restaurant noise making it difficult to hear if you have 4 or more people."

  • "Made reservations as recommended by Great Maple and was glad I did. Dinning room was full when I arrived but my reservation was held and I was able to walk right in and be served. Service was outstanding. Only problem was noise level. Hard to have any type of meaningful discussion with my lunch partner. Basically had to yell at each other across table."

  • "Hands down...this was the best brunch in San Diego...my wife and I are New York foodies and we eat out only once a week...we ended up having four entrees...chiquilles, french toast, pancakes and a nicoise salad...Jessica, the waitress was very good and will not steer you wrong... all of it was amazing... now only if there was live music..."

  • "I'm not one to frequent the same restaurant more than once or twice, but I can't get enough of Great Maple! The atmosphere is fun and hip, the staff friendly and the food amazing and unique! From their maple bacon donuts to the brisket hash, there's always something amazing to try. Portions are big, so don't be afraid to share! You can wait up to an hour or more for brunch at prime time (still worth it), so consider making reservations."

  • "Our food was great and our service was superior, however the noise level became almost unbearable. We arrived at opening and the noise level was not bad but became so much worse as time passed and the place filled up. The owners need to find a way to absorb sound. We are older and my husband wears hearing aids, so we probably won't be coming back. Not even for that amazing Apple pie."

  • "Creative conversion of a 50s diner, hit all the notes on service, menu and beverage, everyone seems to really enjoy working there! Great creativity and quality across the board!"

  • "What a surprise! We LOVED this place! Toss out that one bad review because foodies will be blown away. Carmine, the Exec Chef, rocks! Dishes were well presented, great portions and exploding with flavor! Staff is great and helpful in explaining dishes. The short rib pasta was incredible and lots of it! You can't go wrong. The grilled cheese with venison chili was good...but there was no way you could taste venison....it might as well have been regular beef. Would have liked a bit of "game" flavor to jazz it up. Split the Apple Pie dessert...with 2 or 3. It's a big portion and wonderful. I highly recommend Great Maple. It's noisy so don't go for a "romantic" night out. Just go if you want incredibly creative and tasty food. - john & beth"

  • "Our dining experience at Great Maple was disappointing. We ordered the maple bacon donuts to start, those were doughy. The fig bread that came with our meal was bland and didn't taste like fig, it was more like dry cornbread. Our meal was mediocre and expensive for the overall quality. I don't understand the 4 or 5 star yelp reviews. I do not recommend this restaurant."

  • "First, make a reservation. Parking is limited and difficult. Second, try the maple bacon donuts. Third, if you eat meat, the brisket as amazingly tender and it's fantastic with the popovers...."

  • "For my son to eat his entire first breakfast and order a second one, this place rates high in our book! Service was quick and the staff was pleasant and seemed to enjoy their jobs. The good was very good, a little high priced. The bacon maple donuts are amazing! Cozy atmosphere, felt like I was in the Carolina's!"

  • "Great Maple has been a great spot for me to take friends for brunch and dinner. I've been happy with my overall experience all the times I've visited and the food is delicious. From healthy to more indulgent, the food is of such a great quality and I haven't been disappointed. I'm looking forward to my next visit so that I can further explore the menu! I definitely recommend the maple bacon donuts for brunch or the apple pie for dessert!"

  • "My only complaint, the noise level was not "energetic" it was down right "intrusive"! We asked the server to turn down the music because the noise level was so HIGH, my party of three seated at a tiny round table had to lean across the table to attempt a conversation."
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "I'd give it a higher overall rating if they would do something to lower the noise level. We think about going here more and then pick some place else because it is so loud during prime business hours."

  • "This restaurant is amazing! It has a rich and varied menu. The atmosphere is excellent and the service is outstanding. They have a large number of specialty items and they are all delicious. The only downside is the parking...so be sure to carpool!"

  • "Several of us have been here multiple times and enjoy the choices,The quality of the food did drop just a tad, little things like in the brisket popover the asparagus and other ingredients at the beginning where either whole spears or substantial pieces, now they are cut in small pieces which not only lessens the visual but the ability to have distinct individual flavors all the same in every bite in my opinion. The waitress, we have had before, the first time we wrote it off, thinking she was new,but after the 3 time in a couple months nah. She just seemed always frazzled and asking for help or taking a long time or forgetting drinks or food. Our last time we received a gift certificate. 2 waitresses couldn't get much correct. Its still good"

  • "Great food and service! Restaurant is very busy, and even though we had a reservation, we still had to wait approximately (20) minutes. Parking in the area is really tough on weekends (especially on Sundays with the Hillcrest Farmers Market), so allow plenty of time. Also, tables are very close together, so bringing a stroller and/or carseat to the table is tough. Make sure to let them know you have a little one with you ahead of time."

  • "The maple-bacon donuts were so delicious!!!!!!!!!!! As were the mimosas! But I digress... I had made reservations, obviously, so we were seated right away even though it was a Sunday morning at 10:45 and with a farmer's market right next door. Our server was quick with the mimosas and donuts, and our breakfast entrees arrived quickly also. I ordered the bacon, tomato and avocado scramble with potato cakes on the side. The scramble was yummy but the potato cakes were even better! Our server was friendly and helpful. We shall return!"

  • "Took a friend here for her birthday... she had never been and was so happy to have the opportunity. I felt like a proud parent -- I always love taking people to Great Maple. It was another great meal with an interesting twist or two. We loved the choices of draft beers this time around. The look of the place is just terrific and makes me happy each time I visit... service was great, as always."

  • "I can only speak for what we had but, it was delicious! We started with the maple bacon donuts - AMZING! If you love bacon this is for you. I had their house brisket hash - So incredibly DELICIOUS and would recommend this to anyone!! We've been here twice so far and cannot wait to go back and try something new!"

  • "My group was really concerned that our reservation would be knocked back due to issues finding parking, but luckily the reservations were running ten minutes late anyway so we were all able to be there on time! The service was excellent, the donuts were piping hot and delicious, and the food was spectacular. I was shocked that I even finished my fried avocado popover due to how much food it was for my buck! Definitely coming back, and so happy I was able to introduce two of my friends to it!"

  • "The food is top-notch, but their thoughtful, caring staff make it such a unique, special place. We had a big birthday group and some challenging requests. Our waitress, the hostess and the chef all rallied to make it happen. It was truly impressive. Their efforts made it a memorable night for everyone. The French Dip, fish and chips and burgers were outstanding!"

  • "After a year of driving by this place and seeing it consistently busy with a line around the building i wised up and made a breakfast reservation. TOTALLY worth it! The table side beignets and lemon curd are as awesome as every one says, especially with a cup of their bold coffee. I had the California breakfast: the grilled bread and smashed avocado was light and delicious and the fruit cup was filled with berries (yay to no boring melon!). My friend had the fried avocado popover and was filled to capacity with satisfaction. I think the best part of the experience was our server Josh. He was attentive, friendly and upbeat - extra points for having that attitude the morning of daylight savings!"

  • "We recently moved into University Heights and had been told to try The Grear Maple. In the past month, we have been there twice for brunch and have to say- Every mouthful of their delisious dishes is an adventure. The pairings are unusual at times, but oh so good. Each bite is followed by Ummmmm. Btw, we're from Texas and cannot believe that the best brisket we have ever tasted is serve as part of a breakfast dish at The Great Maple. The food is great. The portions are generous. The drinks are wonderful. Truly a dining experience."

  • "Enjoyed the food, the egg scramble was way too much for one person. Hubby had the pancakes which were a little flavorless and the scramble had a little too much bacon. Can't believe I said too much bacon!! But in a dish like that it gets a little soggy. The cherry tomatoes and basil were nice touches. Also highly recommend the wonderful homemade jam."

  • "I will not be returning. Server was inattentive, forgetful and seemed impatient. Her method of wine service was awkward. The server also presented us with the check before asking if we would like anything else- coffee, dessert, placing it on the table then walking away. We had to flag her down to continue ordering. The Open Table option for reservations fell short of the mark. I needed to modify the number in our party, and did so online yet the restaurant didn't have the update when we arrived. The hostess was able to seat us and suggested reservations be made by phone rather than using Open Table."
