Diner Reviews
  • "Absolutely fabulous lunch before heading off to the airport. My guest had the Pastrami Rueben Sandwich which was phenomenal as well! Love the dark wood walls with cream booths/decor. Pleasure to dine here!"

  • "The place is nice and swanky...but I wish there were was a more exciting menu. I mean I settled on a Cobb salad with grilled chicken...boring! And it wasn't anything special, I knew what a Cobb tastes like. Service was very attentive and took care of us well though. "

  • "This is our second time here. The food was very good, but one needs to be aware of the presentation and small portions. We ordered the beet salad appetizer and it was 5 small beets… the roasted red pepper soup was quite salty, the beef was delicious, and the dessert was not what we expected.. it was the cake.. but a tiny piece of cake and a few add on items."

  • "The food was amazing and unique - it's always nice to have something different and good! Prices are very high but definitely worth it for a special occasion. They also had amazing music and wonderful service!"

  • "The service is outstanding, and the ambiance elegant. However, the food was not consistent & in some cases not worth the price or eating. The mixed salad on the menu promises goat cheese Gouda and pistachios; it delivers a few grated pieces of cheese and a sprinkling of crushed nuts, not enough to impart any flavor. The scallops were delicious, however the Sable fish was ordinary. The duck was so chewy it was difficult to cut; the only remedy offered was a sharper knife and they tried cooking it more, but tough is tough, and despite the nice flavor of the sauce, chewing was grueling! The citrus dessert, a sort of deconstruction of lemon icebox pie, had too much gram cracker crumbles, not enough lemon flavor, and was disappointing."

  • "Despite the loss of the tasting menu, the Grant Grill continues to offer an outstanding dining experience. I typically get to go there once every few months. The menu changes at a reasonable pace--there are some novelties, but also some sure old favorites. For single diners like me, the excellent selection of wine by the glass is a plus--one has choices beyond just chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, and cabernet. The service also continues to be great--if your waiter is preoccupied, someone else notices that your wine glass is empty or that you have finished the course. I look forward to my next visit."

  • "As usual, the service was excellent, the food beautifully prepared and presented, and the price/value ratio reasonable."

  • "Booked a 9:30pm reservation after the opera - wanted to avoid the 5pm pre-opera crowd. Even though it was a near-closing reservation the server was at the top of her game and the food was magnificent. Great blend of flavors, no taste overpowered another. We were the only couple not seated in the lounge, so it might as well have been a private booking. :-) Spendy, but you really do receive great value for the money."

  • "A fabuous dining experience- wonderful flavor combinations, expertly presented and mouthwatering experience from the famous mock turtle soup to the scallops to the prime rib- exquisitely prepared and make sure to order the chocolate mouse with expresso icecream- you don't need an opera afterward to make this a must dine destination"

  • "The cuisine and the service is by far outstanding and worth the experience! Very unlike many of the hotel type restaurant settings, the Grant Grill is a gem! We will return! Merci Chef Dean"

  • "I have been here several times. Alll the help are friendly. Two of my guests were never here before. They liked it so much, they want to return soon. After dinner it is a short walk to the train station, then home to Orange County."

  • "While others came in and were served after our table at noontime, I had to call for the waiter 40 minutes in and say we had to leave and wouldn't have time to eat within our lunch hour. Only then did they bring the food and blamed the well-done burger for the delay. So it was actually our fault because of our menu choice. Inexcusable service. Second time for a similar experience. Will not return. This was a birthday celebration for which we had reservations."

  • "A pork belly starter was too tough to eat. The sweetbread main course for all of us was over cooked and boring."

  • "I have dined at a great many places. Natalie at the Grant is the best waiter/waitress my wife and I have ever had! Top notch! Grant Grill is on the recommended list!"

  • "We celebrated a late Valentine's Day at the Grant Grill. It was a very romantic evening with incredible service! Thank-you, Natalie for taking great care of us! I will be requesting you during our next visit!"

  • "The Grant Grill definitely is in the "San Diego's Top Ten Restaurant" category, though you rarely see reference to it. The experience we had here was equal to the dining experience in the private, Member's only University Club, and every other high end restaurant right up there next to Addison. The ambience was perfect for the event (my annual dad and three daughters birthday dinner) and will be remembered as one of the best evenings yet-and we've tried the very best in San Diego)."

  • "I had booked a table for dinner on our first night in San Diego. I had looked at the menu, but was more interested in finding something good for a Sunday evening after a day of travel. The food was well prepared, the staff professional, and it exceeded expectations."

  • "On the positive side, a very pretty and quiet restaurant. The food was totally bland and tasteless, with miniscule and overpriced portions."

  • "The food was amazing and the service was outstanding. There was a great live band playing. Perfect for a dinner setting. Definitely will be back."

  • "We always go to the Grant Grill prior to a downtown play or music event. The martini's are great - as is their wine selection. But the best part of our dinners there is the service and food. We always let them know we are on a "schedule" for a event after dinner - and they take care of the rest. Nothing is rushed - and the service is just plain outstanding. The food? The scallop dish and the salmon dish are absolutely delicious. Simply a great menu so kudos to the chef!"

  • "I have always loved the Grant Grill and wanted to take a friend there after the Opera. The food was as good as usual, but the service was slow and spotty. We had to flag down our waiter to take our order after waiting for about 10 minutes to get his attention. I am chalking this up to a post-Opera crowd, but it was a bit disappointing."

  • "the sommelier taught and thought about suggestions and was patient to find the right wine for our dishes. we left satisfied and would go back absolutely. service was impeccable, the booths were large but cozy enough for two at the same time. definitely felt like we were a part of the old boys club while we ate. the centennial manhattan was out of this world and one of the greatest drinks we've ever had."

  • "The best bread I've ever had in a restaurant. Which, for me, is a promising sign. I could have easily eaten the whole loaf...but I didn't. All of the food was excellent, except for my steak. That is why I only gave four stars. I ordered something called a strip loin medium-rare. What I expected was a New York, or Kansas City or Delmonico (depending on where you are from). What I got was (I think) a strip of a sirloin. It was only 3/4 inch thick, quite a way past medium-rare, and so tough the steak knife barely made a dent. The good news is the servers were great. They replaced it with a rib-eye (much better). Everything else, including the lemon merengue dessert was top notch."

  • "Why? 1. The dining area is right next to the bar. (NOISY!) 2. Service was slow. Very slow. They may have wanted us to order more wine. 3. Quantity of Restaurant Week food was quite skimpy, and not up to par. 3. Duck was tough & dry. 4. Lemon Meringue pie had only 2 small drops of lemon. 5. "served with granola" means only 1/2 tsp of granola. 6. Owners should dine at Bertrand's, as we did 2 nights before: EXCELLENT in every regard! 7. Convenient parking. Nice decor. Tasty fish."

  • "My husband and I went to dinner during restaurant week and we will definitely be back...the service was great, the food amazing and the atmosphere just perfect. It was a truly memorable dinner from the appetizer to the desert...everything was PERFECT!"

  • "We had a very good experience at the Grant Grill during the Restaurant Week. The first table we were given was next to a rather noisy ice machine, but we were promptly given another table after requesting. The cocktails were very good, the wine selection good, and the food varied between "ok" and very good. But, overall, a nice experience, worth the visit."

  • "Really friendly and engaging service! 10% off if you book before the Show. Amazingly fresh smoked halibut. Chorizo Risotto to die for. House baked focaccia I could eat all day."

  • "The Grant Grill has been one of my favorite restaurants since I first dined there in 1970! We often have dinner there before we go to the Civic for various performances. The wine-by-the-glass pours are generous, my sweetbread appetizer could have been more so but my main course of Lamb was simply the best. Cooked to perfection and every bite delicious! We miss the days of subdued conversation among sophisticated diners. The noise level can be more an energetic and that is something that is never appreciated."

  • "Kind of dissapointed. The great waffle buffet was just 4 different flavored 1/4 pieces of very crunchy waffles that were sitting around for awhile. Lots of different toppings. They ended up blending into each other."

  • "Out of Turtle Soup and everything else was bland, bland, bland. How can chorizo be made bland and pork with hoi sin sauce tasteless?"

  • "Loved the venue! It was the best decorated place in San Diego for Christmas! The specials were amazing and so were the black truffles!"
    Dined on 12/24/2013
  • "They make the best manhattan's in town and the food is delicious. Try the lamb dish....it's outstanding. Service was a bit slow which is quite unusual here but I believe they were very busy due to the holiday. Overall I give this place an A+. I've been here before and will be back!"
