  • "Not being a "wine gal", I wanted a brunch/lunch option to take a very special family friend as a "just because". The drive out to the winery was absolutely beautiful and the winding roads made feel like I was temporary back in SWVa. We were very quickly seated (I had reservations) and the view was just GORGEOUS. Our server was really sweet and informative and our food was wonderful. We had corn leek chowder and the smoked turkey sandwich. Very filling and refreshing. I could have sat here all day and sipped mimosas......."

  • "The food was fantastic and the flavors complex. I would recommend this restaurant despite the less than acceptable service due to the quality of the food. If the service matched the level of the food, I would have easily given this restaurant 5 stars."

  • "We always try to have brunch or lunch when doing a wine trip to Loudon County. The outdoor area was open, it was out of the wind, and the sun was almost as good as the food. They do a great job on the food and service. I had a simple tenderloin and salad that was prepared to perfection. The steak was perfectly cooked and more importantly seasoned. The salad was crisp and went very well with the steak. This is a great place, but you need to make a reservation in advance."

  • "I am usually a safe eater sticking to meat and potatoes. At Grandale, I look forward to tasting nights where a four course dinner designed by the chef is paired with wine. I never worry about what is on the menu, I simply enjoy. It is always worth the drive."

  • "Every 5 years we go to a 5-star restaurant for our anniversary. Since this was an "off year" we went a little more low key, but if our 20th is going to top our 19th I guess we have to return or head back to the Inn at Little Washington. Most wine selections are from the producer on site, the remainder are from Va. wineries with few other bottles-disappointing at first. We each chose a flight($12) of 3 Va. wines- 1 enjoyable, 4 very good, 1 outstanding, all generous pours. We split an appetizer and a soup, 2 salads, 2 entrees and 3 desserts (one for the kids) out the door under $200. The highlight of my meal was a Pork Porterhouse-perfect with the 868 Meritage. My wife's scallops had been plucked from the ocean and into the pan."

  • "I recently had occasion to dine at Grandale for a long-overdue evening out with my mother. The food was excellent -- tasty but not overwrought. I had the quail for an appetizer, a dish I had never tried before, and was not disappointed. The duck was flavorful and moist. Service was attentive, the atmosphere is cozy and I'd love to return when the weather warms up to enjoy the patio seating and some lovely views. We'll be back."

  • "This was such a great find. The BF and I were leaving Charleston a couple of weeks ago after a Saturday night stay and I just have to say - WOW! The BF had the steak omelette with caramelized onions with delicious other goodies and I had the Local BLT w/ Mozzarella. It is easily the best BLT that either of us have had. So much so that I tried to recreate it the next day. His omelette was delicious also, but that really was an amazing BLT. The service was top notch and the view was beautiful, even though it was overcast and drizzling. It's a hard to find gem that has beautiful scenery of the 868 Estate Vineyards, which we will visit in the spring for brunch and wine tasting. I cannot wait to go back to try everything else!"

  • "The restaurant was not too crowded - which means a lower noise level. The service was wonderful, not too pushy. The food is always different, surprising too. We started with the chowder, which was not really New England but different and delicious. Two of us had salads -salmon and steak - which were very good. The burger and tuna sandwiches were wonderful too. And of course the dessert was wonderful, crème brulees and cheese cake. We were surprised at the prices on the wine (we did order the 868 wines) that were not local. We didn't think that the restaurant needed to be that extensive or expensive. Keep it local. Overall we all enjoyed ourselves immensely!"

  • "Our book club met here for brunch and had the place to ourselves for about 40 minutes...which was great since we were discussing a book. Our waiter Omar was very attentive, even when the tables started to fill up. The ambiance is great, the food is good. A little pricey - my bill alone was $42 for a glass of wine, two scallop appetizer, cup of corn chowder, and dessert. The only disappointing thing was that we came for brunch and there is no actual brunch menu, just two specials (an omelet and eggs benedict). We weren't expecting to order off the regular menu when brunch is listed on their website as "brunch is served Sunday from 11am – 3pm." Everyone enjoyed the meal except for three who got the omelet, and we all agreed we'd return."

  • "Valentine's dinner at 868/Grandale Farms was wonderful! Chef Author served up mind blowing dishes with the freshest ingredients and beautiful presentations. This 5 course meal, with wine parings and champagne was delicious, and the atmosphere was very intimate and romantic. It was a sold out event, about 30 people there, which was perfect for the size of the room. A talented musician played sax, and went from table to table playing classic dinner music. It was very nicely decorated with much attention to detail, ....first class all the way. It was also my daughter's birthday, and she was treated to a personalized menu and a decorated wine glass and lots of TLC from the wait staff. It was a memorable event at one of our favorite restaurants."

  • "Had high expectations, but sadly we were disappointed. The venue has a very appealing and comfortable feel. The pork chop was excellent in taste and appearance. The grits that accompanied the dish were outstanding; only problem the portion was very small. The green vegetable too salty and remained untouched. The filet mignon was ordered medium rare and arrived well done on one half and medium on the other. I elected not to send the filet back and only ate half of it. I have no problem paying for an “expensive” meal. I only desire that the meal be worth the cost and the service commensurate with which one would expect. THe Grandale did not live up to my garnd expectations. P.S. Later this spring we will try lunch, details to follow."

  • "Grandale never let's us down. Small, charming restaurant with excellent service and second to none food. They always have a superb menu and interesting combinations on the plate. Try to arrange a "Wine Dinner" on the 3rd Friday of each month for a paired meal with wine."

  • "I have been to Grandale 5 times now. The first time was a couple of months after they opened. Wow. Crab cakes were awesome. Everything so fresh and thoughtfully prepared. Tasted great. But it steadily went down hill each time. This last time was down right embarrassing. Appetizers took 20 minutes. The scallops were ice in the middle...they obviously did not thaw and thought burning in a frying pan was enough. Then we asked for crabcakes. Same thing. Burnt on outside and cold in the middle. Main dishes were cooked but the seasoning was not balanced. What happened to this place? It is bigger now so I guess quality is removed to meet quantity demands. Too bad."

  • "We went for the wine pairing menu that they offer twice a month on Fridays. It is well worth the price. The food was delicious and they take a lot of care in preparing it and making sure you are pleased. The wine pours were just the right amount and were paired nicely with the food. The only improvement I can see is the building. On the outside you feel as though you are walking into a garage; although once inside it is decorated nicely and they have a fireplace. I would highly recommend Grandale and we will certainly go back for more of the pairings."

  • "From the website, I knew what to expect at Grandale, but it was even better in real life. The dining room was so comfortable but still felt special, our server was the perfect level of attentive, and the food/wine surpassed our already high expectations. The tasting menu was four courses, each paired with a generous taste of an appropriate wine. Each course was a work of culinary art, a pleasure to look at but even more so to eat! We've done tasting menus for most of our anniversaries and Grandale went right to the top of the chart. We weren't stuffed, but very satisfied, and proud of ourselves for choosing such a gem of a restaurant. Can't wait to return in daylight to enjoy the scenery and maybe some outdoor dining."

  • "Grandale is located right on a farm, so the meat and produce is always super-fresh. They now have a vinyard and winery as well, but I would not rank their wines best in the area. Food and ambiance, not to mention prices, I would put at similar quality/value to Tuscarora Mill and Market Street Bistro. Enjoy!"

  • "We've been frequenting Grandale since just after it opened and have never been disappointed. It's a tiny place down a gravel road, but has food that's worth the car wash afterwards. They've recently paired with the 868 Vineyard and the combination seems to have elevated both venues."

  • "The catfish appetizer and the prawns and crab pasta were both very good but we were a disappointed with the swordfish. It wasn't cooked all the way (the center was raw) and it was bland. The other dishes were so good that we would definitely go back."

  • "Overall OK, a little pricey for the atmosphere, waitress was very nice but needed to keep refering to her notes for the specials and how entrees were prepared. Close to home so that was a plus maybe for the future."

  • "We are fairly frequent guests at Grandale Farm and have been for several years. We have often taken friends there for dinner. Fortuantely we didn't have anyone with us on 12/27. The steaks were overcooked as was most of the rest. Deserts were fine, as usual. I overhearda woman from the staff say that the chef was away on an emergency and she was running things. This should be allowed. We probably will not return."

  • "For a very special restaurant with great food, the wine list is poor. My wife had very few choices of wine by the glass. We are not very interested in VA or WV wines. I choose a pinot noir from Oregon. The price point was $45. I drank one glass and brought the rest home for cooking. No flavor, no berries, lot's of tannins. When we go back, we will bring our own wine or stick to water."
