Diner Reviews
  • "We were staying at the Westin around the corner from Grand Cru, and are so glad the concierge recommended it. We ate here a total of 3 times during our stay, and each meal was superb. We will definitely return the next time we are in DC."

  • "Dinner at Grand Cru was delightful. Everything we ordered was simply delicious. Prices were reasonable, especially the excellent wine selection. We loved it and cannot wait to return. How lucky this is only 2 blocks from us."

  • "In meetings at the nearby hotel until 8:00pm, so I was pleased to have gotten an 8:15pm reservation, as we had to catch very early flights the next morning. On arrival, the place was jammed, but the hostess noted that several tables were paying their bills, and estimated the wait at around 10 minutes. The diners proceeded to linger over their wine, and the 10 minutes became 30--with nowhere to sit, and nothing to eat or drink The hostess apologized repeatedly, and we were seated the moment a table finally opened up, but the delay put a definite damper on the evening. The service was friendly and the food was good, but I wished I'd gone elsewhere. Probably better savored when one has ample time to do so."

  • "I made reservation through open table as I have done many time before. Somehow they didnt have the reservation on their computer even though I got a confirmation from open table. I contacted open table for their comments and the process. However they didn't respond."

  • "This is my second time here. I had the cheese fondu and wild mushroom orzo. Both are great and not ridiculously expensive. The duck bruschetta is also very good. My only issue is the table we were seated at was back by the wine market which left browsers to squeeze behind our chairs. We had one guy stand over is for 10 minutes perusing and climbing over us. Although I know that's a statement of his rudeness and not the restaurants, perhaps they could assist customers when they are busy or move the table for more room. Other than that the food is great and I will come back, just request a different table!"

  • "Had the V-Day menu with the suggested wine pairings. Menu was excellent, execution lacked. Food was luke warm, the bisque was more asparagus than lobster and had an off color. Service was accomodating but made it feel like they wanted to turn the table after 90 minutes."

  • "I love Grand Cru and tonight was no exception (wish it had been warmer inside!). Their butterfish is really good. It used to come with two filets, but they have replaced one with 3 shrimp. I'd rather have more of the butterfish! Their dates are AMAZING and very rich. Only four come with the appetizer, but that's all you will need. And, it is a GREAT wine bar. They have several flight options, house wines that are a great deal (and taste good!) and of course they are also a wine store so if their list isn't long enough for you, browse around and have them open something. Dessert - pear tart or the hazelnut bar are the best!!!"

  • "Needed a date spot with great wine features STAT! Enter Grand Cru. It's a small place, but that's what lends to its charm. Staff were friendly and vapor when needed. The wine list is extensive and for wine noobs like myself, they offer several tasting flights to get you started (or finished). The plates were filling and perfect portions for one person, they offer a lot of different meals for all taste buds. I plan to come here again and again."

  • "I had an opentable dining check to use and my roommate wanted fondu so we ended up here. Cute little hole in the wall and the waitress was more than happy to take the check. They let us include wine on the check which I thought was rare. We had the duck bruschetta which was good but the duck was kind of overwhelmed by the peppers. The gruyere fondu is not a traditional fondu but was very good and the wild mushroom orzo was marvelous! The truffle deviled eggs were not truffley and too vinegary for my taste. But as the only disappointment I will probably come back here again and try the French onion soup."

  • "Very good food at reasonable prices- my favs are crabcake as well as mushroom strudel apps, along with duck and a well-prepared filet."

  • "For a wine bar, the selections on the wine flights were less than appealing. My husband and I each got different flight and none of the six wines were very good. Same for the menu - menu hasn't changed in 2 years. The service was also disappointing. There seemed to be no dedicated section for servers. We waited about 15 minutes before anyone came to the table. During our meal, I was prepared to order another drink, but no one came back to check on us."

  • "A friend and I were meeting for dinner and drinks on a Friday night, and wanted a place where we could catch up. The atmosphere at Cru was perfect; casual, not too loud and a nice by the glass wine selection. The restaurant was filled with small groups (3-5 people) and couples, with tables well positioned and spaced for carrying on a conversation. There was good variety on the menu, but service was rushed (our entrees arrived when we were less than half way through our appetizers) and the quality of the food was a bit underwhelming. Overall Cru is probably best suited for drinks and appetizers or dessert."

  • "Four of us wanted a new dining experience on Christmas eve, somewhere with good food and a rich assortment of wines. We found it at Grand Cru. The relaxed atmosphere and excellent food, made for a great pairing with the wines they had on the menu. Extra bonus, since Grand Cru is also a wine store, you can pick any bottle of wine, pay retail for it and have it with dinner for a $7 corkage fee - which is very reasonable. We will visit again!"

  • "My wife and I like Grand Cru in Arlington so much we look for excuses to take friends and relatives there. The menu is brief but its content is terrific. The chef, Trent Conry, is creative and thoughtful and has created wonderful meals for my wife, who has some significant limits on what she can eat. Among the menu winners: Deviled eggs (creamy and piquant too), the Mediterranean Medley salad, mushroomy orzo, and especially the duck, so tender, so wonderfully flavorful. And don't miss the New Mexico brut (yes, New Mexico) at the top of the wine menu. It's pretty much all you could want for a bubbly kick-start to a great meal. Go to Grand Cru any time you have a chance! Hank Street, Arlington"

  • "tucked in a courtyard is a small but charming little bistro with great outdoor seating, a wine store, and an eclectic but delicious menu. Who knew? not most people, and i have a feeling those who do would like to keep it a secret."

  • "The food was delicious. We ordered a few small plates: Brie with honey, beer sliders, olives and nuts, and escargot. All came out wonderfully. We were still a bit hungry so we got the mushroom orzo, which was amazing. Very rich, but delicious. The wine flights were great but our server didn't seem too knowledgable about the wines. He struggled to even pronounce the names. Afterward we checked out the wines for sale but we found them overpriced. (We saw a few bottles that were also sold at Whole Foods for half the price. You know that's vastly over priced if even Whole Foods is cheaper!)"

  • "Grand Cru provides excellent food and wine in casual atmosphere with tables spread among wine racks and a bar--adding up to a pleasant and relaxing dining experience. Making reservations was easy; the hostess was friendly and helpful ( particularly when I called to ask where to park--the Mall), and the waitress was knowledgeable and forthcoming with suggestions about menu choices (the Mediterranean and Beet Salads were not disappointing) and wine pairings. Note: Parking can be a problem on weekends, so allow time if you have a reservation."

  • "The menu isn't huge, but everything on it is good. The bread basket - yum! We ordered a few appetizers and a bottle of wine. Also tried a wine flight, and tried the third glass and really didn't care for it - they offered to exchange it for a different one! Great place in Ballston. When the weather is nice, the outdoor seating is a must!"

  • "We came for dinner and ended up sharing a bunch of small plates. Standouts were the prosciutto-wrapped dates, truffled deviled eggs, and the French onion soup is to die for! Sliders and wild mushroom strudel were pretty good also. Wine by the glass can get pricey here, so it seems like the flights are a better value, as the pours are decent size. Desserts are not as small as you might think so definitely consider sharing these. Trio of creme brulees was very nice, as was the one with the chocolate bars. it's a cozy restaurant tucked into a courtyard hidden from the street. Food was solidly good, not mindblowing, but very good. Our server was fine, not memorable, but they were prompt with clearing plates and refilling water."

  • "First time visit for dinner. The food excellent -- outstanding spinach salad, lamb shank, and duck. Also of note -- braised beef sliders -- a smaller plate but if you prefer tapas rather than a large entre go for that plus a salad and maybe soup. Wine was (not surprisingly) excellent; even the house pours are good (and less expensive). Consider one of the wine "flights". The best was the Grand Cru wine flight ($24) -- 3 decent 2.5 oz pours of very high end wines. But even the less expense flights (between $14 and $17) were spot on. Service helpful and non-intrusive. We ate on the early side (645p) and thus could easily converse. But once crowded (by around 745p) the noise level did start to play a role. Even so, high marks."
