A word from Grand Central Oyster Bar
A New York landmark with Guastivino tiled vaulted ceilings. There are two dining rooms open for reservations and walk-ins. The oyster bar, lounge, bar, and counter seating are open to first-come first-serve customers.   • "I dined alone, spur of the moment, early evening, first time here. Was greeted warmly, seated immediately, and pleased to see non-alcoholic beer on the menu (Beck's). Menu is huge, bit much for someone there on a trial basis and not an oyster/seafood aficionado. Most was too expensive for my "just trying it out" budget, so I looked to Stews and Pan Roasts; there are several. I chose Cherrystone clam stew and it was tasty. It came with a small biscuit, which was impressively warm, and crackers. I finished with Creme Caramel dessert, also very good. I would give 5 stars if I hadn't been visited by a persistent fly, which dined several minutes on a cracker on my bread plate. When I mentioned it to the manager he was "sorry" but kind of blase."

  • "We use the bar, which is intimate, casual, you can order a drink: but of course the best part is the seafood. We had crab cakes. Wow, you just can't get better crab cakes, more crab than cake, and a super sauce, anywhere in the world. The best. You also can't beat the central location. GSW"

  • "we had smoked fish appetizers and soup (new england and manhatten clam chowder) and fried. Everything was very good and the service was prompt. the iced tea was refreshing. It's not that easy to find unsweetened, brewed iced tea in Manhatten. The restaurant is very beautiful with nice tile everywhere. You can skip the waiter service and sit at a counter (plenty of room, large counter) and get sandwiches like lobster roll and oyster poor boy. I recommend this for a more affordable experience."

  • "We had reservations at 6:30 on a Friday night. We were seated promptly and had a good table. We ordered the oysters on the half shell. They came, but there was shell in almost every one. The New England chowder was just so-so. The fish and chips was alright. The fish was Pollock. I had the fried oysters which were small and without moisture, They were tasteless and not succulent like they are supposed to be. Maybe they were made ahead of time and reheated. The sliced fried potatoes were dry and rubbery. They were left on the plate. I'm sorry that we went as the bill was over $100.00 Never again. Don't bother."

  • "A classic revived. Nothing can match the classic New York eatery located in the magnificent landmark Grand Central Station. The menu is also classical seafood with an unmatched selection of oysters. I also had their delicious New England clam chowder (still great even though it was not hot enough). The old Oyster Bar was a bit dark and dingy but they have done a wonderful job sprucing it up without changing the ambiance . New Yorkers and visitors should not miss the experience."

  • "Went for lunch on several peoples recommendations. It's a fun place to try and am glad I did go. Food was reasonably priced and the fresh oysters met expectations. Had the chefs choice of eight - a pair of four different kinds. All were succulent, not too Britney, and very fresh. Definitely go for this one. Manhattan chowder was delicious. Downside is the noise! Way too noisy to have a decent conversation, likely due to the cavernous nature of the place. Oysters Rockerfeller were quite disappointing - far too much spinach, very tiny oyster and over cooked. Would not recommend them."

  • "I have eaten at the Oyster Bar off and on for over 20 years. My most recent experience -- lunch this week -- was mediocre at best. The reservation system was fine. The general ambiance was fine. Now to the food and service: the appetizer portions were too small for the price. The entrees took more than a half an hour to be served and it was not a packed house. One entree, the "Jumbo Shrimp Salad" had only two or three shrimp in it. The waffle fries were not hot. My wife and I both were surprised at how utterly bitter the kale was -- and I've eaten and grown kale before. We enjoyed our company and lunch, but overall, felt that we could have had a better lunch somewhere else for the $204 (including tip) for a table of four."

  • "Food is good- don't expect pretty presentations. Service has always been hit or miss, this time the server was nice and so was the host. We go here because we work in the area and will go back, but for a lobster roll that is $30 I would expect the plate to be a beautiful masterpiece, with not the bottom of the container soaking wet coleslaw, and a sprinkling of French fries. The lobster itself was good, and there was a nice amount, I just expected more over all. My colleagues ordered the fish and chips and were happy with the taste and the size of the fish they received."

  • "Our waiter was pretty unfriendly, not smiling once, and basically snarled at our busboy when they both bumped into each other. We all saw it and it was little uncomfortable. We asked if a certain fish could be put on one of their salads and he said no substitutions, and that we could add a salad to our order instead. I'm not sure why I'd want a full salad as well as a main course."

  • "I was meeting someone visiting from Hong Kong and who had heard about the oyster bay bar. It was quite disappointing to have a noisy, crowded and low-service lunch at a place that was my gueat's choice. The food was strictly average, the place was cramped, noisy, and rushed. The service was so-so... The server asked a couple of times if my guest would arrive -- they were ten minutes late -- at least three times. Food was strictly passable."

  • "I have been aware of the Oyster Bar for many years but have never been, nor has anyone that I know. My son lives in lower Manhatten and I live in New Jersey. I want to meet him for dinner to catch up and suggested we meet there. He is a bit particular about where he goes as many young adults are. Dinner in a train station did not strike him as trendy. Both he and I were pleasantly surprised at our unique one of a kind dining experience. The vaulted tiled ceilings did create a subtle rumble in the room but it quickly transformed to white noise. Our servers were very friendly, helpful, and professional. We shared a plate of oysters as an appetizer. My son had the Sock-eye salmon and I had Alaskan Broiled Cod. I highly recommend this landmark."

  • "As always the food and service are excellent. Usually we sit at one of the oyster bars or counters, but this is the first time we sat at a table as we came with a group of friends. Friendly neighborhood style service. If you remember this is a train stain restaurant in the grand old commuter tradition, no more no less, then you will love this place. As long as you love seafood! My favorites are an assorted dozen of oysters, an order of fried clams, a scallop PAN ROAST (amazing!!!) and if I'm still hungry then a Tuna sushi grade lightly seared steak to finish it off. Yum!!!"

  • "This venerable institution is a good place for a business lunch. The tables are full but it lives on its past laurels. My crab and shrimp caeser had an good amount of crab and a few shrimp, but was a fairly small portion for an entree, filling a smallish dinner plate. The price was $27, which for the portion was high. The caeser dressing was a bit lifeless. I'm not sure what to order here as entrees start around $25."

  • "Always odd going here as you are dining in a station - places which aren't usually known for gourmet food. The restaurant is very busy with lots of noise (not a place for a work lunch or dinner) and a rushed service. But the food is good, if you strip away those issues. If you are in a group of 6 they will keep you waiting at the reception are until 5 of your party arrive - this is really maddening and a rude way to treat customers."
