I am a NYer who had not been here for many years, Time to revisit this beautiful room with the vaulted ceiling! The liquor prices are reasonable, We both had salmon... one very well done, one cooked as fish should be cooked. The orders, in this very busy restaurant, were served perfectly. Side substitutes made with no problem, The room is very noisy.

I chose The Oyster Bar knowing it was a NYC landmark with an extensive selection of oysters and seafood. From that standpoint it met the criteria, but on the whole minus the shear grandeur of the room and the huge menu our meals were quite average. My 1/2 doz. Rhode Island oysters to start were the highpoint of my meal - extra large, briny, and full of flavor. My wife ordered a daily special of snapper with champagne sauce and salmon roe which was quite good. My monkfish tournedos with bernaise was average. The sauce was quite tasteless but the fish was grilled nicely. The standard sides(steamed vegetables and boiled potato) were bland and forgettable. My biggest complaint - service. After receiving our meals and our first glass of wine poured, we were left to ourselves and had to chase our waiter down for the bill. No dessert or coffee was offered until I asked for the check. So, worth a one time visit, but a return is not likely there are a multitude of better restaurants to choose from in NYC. Note: The noise level is very high, so if looking for intimacy anda romantic atmosphere, this is not the place.

The Oyster Bar has a unique ambience (the tiled vaulted ceiling is memorable) and is well worth seeing. The seafood is the reason to come and the selection of shellfish is excellent and not unreasonably priced (though hardly a bargain. The noise level can be high and the service can be spotty (depending on how crowded the restaurant is), but in general the Oyster Bar well worth a visit at least once.

Very good as usual, clams on half shell, Manhattan clam chowder, and sea bass. Only problem..two waiters one very good the other, Asian, in a SNIT over table assignments...what a fool! Diners see his non-professionalism...he needs to work at McDonalds...they would fire him for his insolent behavior! Fool, you're in the hospitality business... Disappointing for me,the diner...

First time at the Oyster Bar and must say it was exceptional, it was a busy Saturday Night and we were seated promptly, food was great and served quickly. If you like oysters, this is the place to go. Reasonably prices, this somewhat noisy restaurant maintains an extensive menu of seafood delicacies that includes a mind boggling list of available oysters. So many in fact that I left it up to the house to choose a variety for me. It chose wisely, as each was as delicious as the next. The monk fish with bearnaise sauce was perfect.

The Oyster Bar does live up to its name- the selection and quality of the oysters is excellent. But compared with visits over the years, this most recent one was a disappointment. Despite have a 4:30 pm reservation (well before there was much of a crowd), being seated immediately and telling our waiter (after nothing seemed to be arriving at the table) that we had to be out of there by 6:15 to make an event elsewhere, the meal was interminable (with the biggest wait being about 45 min just to get the platter of 20 oysters we ordered). We had to rush through the main course when it finally came and that food, while perfectly fine, was not particularly impressive. The small dessert I'd requested for the friend whose birthday it happened to be that day was rushed out as we were taking care of the bill and we were not charged for it which was thoughtful. Our waiter was personable and very knowledgable about oysters and wine, but seemingly powerless to get our food to us in a remotely timely manner. Overall a disappointment. Unlikely to visit again unless I just want some smoked trout and whisky in the more intimate bar room and have plenty of time to hang out.

Looking forward to our meal here(Grand Central is amazing). However the food, service and ambience were all dreadful , undercooked fish, rubbery, tasteless jumbo prawns, soggy rice and asparagus so hard it couldnt be cut through. The service was impersonal and we were seated, served and dispatched within 50 minutes. It was so noisy it was like being in Macdonalds on a Saturday lunchtime. When leaving I mentioned to the manager that the experience had been far from pleasant but he was also appeared disinterested and couldnt care less. It is a shame that such a wonderful location is so badly managed and food so poor. We certainly wont be recommending it to friends and family on return to UK and hope it improves.

We visited for dinner during a short visit to NY from London. The spectacular architecture Grand Central Terminal is well worth a visit and the vaulted Oyster Bar is an integral part of that. The huge room is very noisy, however (I suspect that's a feature of the tiled ceiling) and the fact that we had to shout across the table to be heard did make the meal a bit less relaxing. There is a vast choice of oysters on the menu, although between us we had Alaskan salmon and jumbo prawns, all of which was fine but not brilliant. The service was efficient and friendly. We enjoyed our visit but probably wouldn't visit again if it wasn't in such a magnificent setting.

The best thing about the Oyster Bar (besides the food, of course) is the fact that in more than 60 years of patronizing this restaurant, it has never disappointed; not once!! The extensive variety of seafood (specializing in the East Coast variety, especially succulent bivalves) is the freshest there is, the wait staff is uber professional, reservations are honored to the minute, and the ambiance is about as New York as it gets. Even with all the hustle and bustle in the large main dining room, one is never rushed to finish one's meal, and everything is done (in a New York sort of way) to make you feel at home. If consistency is something to value, well, this place has it in spades.

I had looked forward to dining in the famous Oyster Bar after not being able to dine on the previous trip to New York. I was extremely disappointed at the experience. The service was very poor in that after ordering a beer as we were both thirsty we asked for the wine list. Our food arrived and no one approached us for us to order the wine. The starter a chowder was tasty but very cold. No one even approached us to ask if the food was to our liking. We should have complained but we had gone past caring when the main course arrived. We couldn't wait to finish and leave. We paid an over expensive bill and even when we left no one thanked us for our custom and asked if we had enjoyed our meal. A very forgettable meal Not to be recommended.

Large room was relatively noisy and the tables close together. Since it is in Grand Central Station, it is convenient and the seafood was good, but not great. Very large selection, so it may depend on what one orders. Service was a little slow, but that may be due to the large seating capacity, not neglect on the part of the servers. I would go again, if I needed a convenient eating place, but I would not go out of my way to go there. For a NY icon, I'd have to say I was a bit disappointed. If possible I would try to sit in what appeared to be the older part of the restaurant, it seemed to have a bit more atmosphere.

The staff were warm and attentive, the raw bar selections quite good. The cooked food items (two different fish dishes, which is admittedly a small selection from the menu) were good, but not particularly imaginative for someone who likes a bit more splash in spices. Portion sizes good. But you can't beat the location. Nothing comparable if you want to meet people for a substantial satisfying dinner at a place convenient in transit in and out of the city. Fun to find such a large spacious room in what one might imagine to be the basement of Grand Central. Would definitely go again to meet a friend for dinner in transit.

My husband and I sat in the bar as we were heading to the theatre and needed a quick meal. We ordered a dozen oysters mixed, and they were amazing - a variety of East Coast, West Coast, Nova Scotia and New Zealand. They were all fresh and delicious. Washed it down with some Rose Cuvee. Per the waitress's recommendations, we also had clams casino and they were divine. Thick cut bacon, nice-sized clams. Wish we had crunchy bread to dip in the sauce. We were in and out quickly, loved all our seafood and drinks. A fun date. There are lots of tourists but it didn't really affect the ambience.

The dining room is very noisy so if I were to go back I'd select a seat in the bar area which was not as loud and had a less sterile atmosphere. Soup was lukewarm. Requested a good table for anniversary on my reservation but they didn't seem to have any interest or awareness of my request on my reservation.

It was our wedding anniversary, so I had requested a quiet table. Instead, they put us right next to the waiter's station, despite there being several other open tables. The oysters were mostly great, although a couple (out of 14) were dried out and a little funky. The oyster pan roast was a huge disappointment. A soggy piece of white bread shouldn't count as "toast" in a high end restaurant. Our waiter was brusque, and not in a Peter Lugar-charming kind of way. Said they didn't have an oyster description list, despite it being posted on their website and several previous reviews mentioning it was available. Despite planning to stay for dinner, we left after appetizers in favor of going somewhere else.
