Order wisely. All is expensive, but clam-shack style fried food and high cuisine are practically the same price. The people next to me had a much more appetizing plate than I did.

This is an icon and we often eat here one our trips to NYC. We had a good meal and the fish and seafood selections are great. One minor gripe - there was too much spinach in the oysters Rockefeller.

It was okay, I would try again and get the lobster. My fish had no taste and my vegetables looked like were a week old. We took a long cab ride and it was not worth it.

I'm a local and have been to the Oyster Bar many times over the years. The large dining room is big, expansive and noisy due to the large ceilings and tile floor. I had an early reservation and the place was empty, but yet was seated directly near a bus station contrary to my reservation request. I was earlier than my friend, and had time to drink in the rather "down on it's heels" decor. It's a shame since it is a landmark. On the one hand, the formica counter service in the middle part of the restaurant is kitchy, but tacky too, considering the pricepoint isn't diner caliber. Our food was good - oysters and fish but not amazing - taste and presentation. I would rather go to many other area places for the money and ambiance.

The space is large and beautiful but definitely casual. Service was adequate but "uneven". The waiter was excellent about recommending oysters for our taste and they were definitely the best part of the meal. Otherwise the fish definitely tasted fresh but both my striped bass and my husbands scallops were slightly overcooked. Nothing outstanding about the preparation. Everything was fine but overpriced for what you got. n Glad we tried it but there are too many great restaurants in NYC to go back.

I travel through Grand Central Terminal, so the location couldn't be better for catching a train. It's a tourist must, but for someone who's looking for elegance, it doesn't fit the bill. Although, I like the bar area and would request that room. The food is mediocre, not great at all. We received very friendly, but rushed service. The waiter recommended a very enjoyable white wine for us to enjoy by the glass. The garlic mashed potatoes were delicious. I had filet of sole which I could have prepared better in my own kitchen. The vegetables were warmed-over and downright unenjoyable.

The famous Oyster Bar is a New York City landmark, a great place to amaze out of town visitors in the incredible setting of Grand Central Station, that just happens to offer an extraordinary variety of seafood. A visit just for the oysters and oyster stew is worth it in a setting like no other anywhere else in the nation.

We talked about making this a tradition.

I have frequented the Grand Central Oyster Bar and have always brought guests visiting NYC here as its a convenient location and their oysters are great. However after making reservations and requesting special accommodations for a stroller, upon arrival they had not done so. The restaurant was NOT busty and there were plenty of tables, however the host felt it necessary to loudly and arrogantly teach me a lesson about traveling with a stroller. He even pointed at my face and my sleeping 6 month old. He left my party of 5 to sit and wait while we watched all the open tables as he laughed to the waitresses about having us wait so they could make room for the "limo." As a long time customer of this iconic place I will never again return.

Absolutely do not deserve the reputation it has. Three of our five fish dishes were undercooked, a shame for a restaurant specializing in the products of the sea. Moreover, all the trimmings were the same and did not reflect the exorbitant price on the final grade. Finally, the servers are stressful, tear dishes just completed and monitor the payment while the room is almost empty ... pathetic. I do not recommend it, which is sad because we had high expectations of this restaurant.

Most of the food was ok, but I was not happy with the 'bucket of steamers' for which we paid 21.95. It was far from a bucket, it was a small bowl with about a dozen tiny steamers, not even a pound. The steamers were ok, but to pay 21.95 for a small bowl was highway robbery. We also had the fried oyster appetizer, and the oysters did not taste fresh, not too bad but they were bland. I do not think they were shucked fresh and fried up. I love the atmosphere and the raw oysters were great, but I was disappointed in the other aspects. Service at the raw bar was average at best, the guys brought wrong beers, and wasnt familiar with the names we were ordering. Other than that, he barely said a word to us.

It has been, and still remains, a favorite of mine. The menu is vast and varied and I have yet to have a bad meal there. The fact that it is in Grand Central is great when I have visitors in, and even better when locals discover such a gem in a station! The ambiance is noisy, but no musak (thank The Lord). The fact that it us effectively a big cellar amplifies the conversation, but I like that. You are effectively guaranteed high volume privacy from your neighbors' tables - kind of hiding in plain sight! This will remain a favorite!

I use to come here as a child, with my parents when we occasionally took the train into New York. We always had the oyster stew with the creamy base and the plump soft oysters. As an older adult living in NY in the late sixties and early seventies, a group of friends and myself would stop by for the oyster bar's wonderful oysters. The restaurant is a classic, being around since the 30's, 40's. It has always been mentioned as an icon, hosting artists of all kinds of yesterday and today. It doesn't look the same, as I remember it years ago, but it does have a great resemblance to that "special" place that I visited so many times. The architecture has never changed except I think the tile has been redone. We will definitely go back.

I booked this reservation because I frequented this place often, and wanted to celebrate a friend's new job promotion. I made the reservation through open table for nine p.m. I did not know that they closed at 9:30 pm. I was right on time for my reservation and we checked in. Right away we were rushed and we were served by two waiters who also seemed in a hurry. What was weird is that when we did try to order drinks to start it too twenty minutes to get a glass of wine! That we had to ask for several times. Then we were told we have to hurry and order because the kitchen closes right now. How about you tell us that when we arrived 15 minutes early and waited for our table? They should of suggested we look at the menu while we wait.

Our party of four enjoyed another great seafood dining experience at this unique historic gem. From the extensive oyster selection and even sea urchin, to the reasonably priced glasses of wine at under $10 and fine Belgian ales, to the main courses of the freshest fin and shellfish, it was most enjoyable - and the service top-notch as well. We go to the Oyster Bar every year when we come to NYC. The seafood is always fresh and there's variety of choices. I recommend the Weak Fish. Prices are NYC appropriate. Unfortunately, this visit was not the experience to which we've grown accustomed. Our server, DR, was polite but not exactly attentive. I had to work get her attention. One our orders was not properly cooked and needed to go back. After a few minutes I had to chase her down and have her come over to the table. A salad never arrived and that had to be corrected. The Fume Blanc I order was specified on the menu as a 2011, but arrived as a 2013 with no explanation or notification. So, the overall experience could have been better and I know it can be.

This used to be the best place to eat, but our last visit this October was disappointing. What used to be hot sour-dough bread has been reduced to bread sticks and limp rolls. The service is where the biggest drop occurred. The waiter was useless as far as recommending anything, his English was limited, and he basically was cold and indifferent; just looked for reasons to walk away from the table. On top of that most places include 18 percent tip. I wanted to give him only 10.

Our reservation was for 5PM so I thought the staff would be ready to go. Our server might have been but he was much more interested in others. Getting things we asked for took longer than it should have. The restaurant was by no means crowded. While the service was poorer than expected we can say that the food-for the most part- was good. Our salad was crisp and the dressing was tasty. The calimari was ok but could have been better. Neither the marinara dipping sauce nor the cocktail sauce we finally got was anywhere near the best we've ever had. On the plus side the clam chowder was the best we have ever had.
