Diner Reviews
  • "I had oysters which weren't listed on the menu. Enormous! Delicious!"

  • "Great oysters - good selection. Service a little slow but pleasant and helpful"

  • "As always the food and service are excellent. Usually we sit at one of the oyster bars or counters, but this is the first time we sat at a table as we came with a group of friends. Friendly neighborhood style service. If you remember this is a train stain restaurant in the grand old commuter tradition, no more no less, then you will love this place. As long as you love seafood! My favorites are an assorted dozen of oysters, an order of fried clams, a scallop PAN ROAST (amazing!!!) and if I'm still hungry then a Tuna sushi grade lightly seared steak to finish it off. Yum!!!"

  • "This venerable institution is a good place for a business lunch. The tables are full but it lives on its past laurels. My crab and shrimp caeser had an good amount of crab and a few shrimp, but was a fairly small portion for an entree, filling a smallish dinner plate. The price was $27, which for the portion was high. The caeser dressing was a bit lifeless. I'm not sure what to order here as entrees start around $25."

  • "Been a long time and it was good to go back after years of living out of town. Attentive service and great oysters and fresh fish"

  • "Always odd going here as you are dining in a station - places which aren't usually known for gourmet food. The restaurant is very busy with lots of noise (not a place for a work lunch or dinner) and a rushed service. But the food is good, if you strip away those issues. If you are in a group of 6 they will keep you waiting at the reception are until 5 of your party arrive - this is really maddening and a rude way to treat customers."

  • "Very fresh oysters and a good dining experience. The waiters were efficient and the food was good. A NY institution."

  • "Enjoyed lunch at the historic GC Oyster Bar on 12 July with a party of 4. Got the lemon sole special, which was hearty with an ample portion. I love their oysters and the selection is unbelievable. Service isn't the fastest. Stop in if you are an oyster lover like me!"

  • "Took the family back here after visiting a number of years back. Great dining space. Bit expensive but the ambiance, food and vaulted ceilings make it up for it. One to tick off your New York list !"

  • "If you like fish, then this is the place for you. Walking through the imposing halls of Grand Central to reach the venue gets the evening off to a good start. The menu is impressive, the staff knowledgeable and helpful and the food itself does not disappoint."

  • "Nothing compares to the Oyster Bar for FRESHNESS and Quality of seafood. Try the Cold Platter for two. About $65.00.....Great"

  • "Lobster pieces plentiful, BUT their taste was overwhelmed by seasoning, especially too much tarragon (I think). Re. noise- if we hadn't been relocated to the saloon dining area we would have left the incredibly noisy main restaurant."

  • "Great, Honest Food - Good portion sizes, Great Cocktails - were not disappointed :)"

  • "The food here has always been good. My favorites are the oyster selections and the She-Crab soup. The reception staff however was quite rude and behaved as if they were doormen at some hot nightclub versus a restuarant open to the paying public."

  • "Easiest spot to meet our daughters for dinner after the train from Connecticut. We made a reservation (via open table) and got a great spot for 2. The waiters were right there with menus and asking for drink orders. Bread and everything flats were put on the table. My daughter and I each ordered an iced cold draught beer, and then she ordered some of their fantastic, always delicious New England clam chowder - not too thick, but definitely not thin. I ordered the seared soft shell crab (without the butter) and it came with vegetables of the season and potatoes, absolutely fabulous. My daughter ordered the shrimp and crab Caesar salad and it was so large she had to take half of it home. It just took awhile to find get our check."

  • "We went to the Oyster Bar with fond recollections and high hopes. Our recollections are intact. Our hopes were dashed. The service and food were mediocre at best. The table next to us got up and left after 15 minutes before a waiter even came over to greet them. Turns out they were the lucky ones. We stayed and experienced the food and service."

  • "Fresh, fresh, fresh seafood in historic Guastavino tiled room. Gracious maître d'hôtel and wait staff. They know what they are doing and do it well."

  • "We were in New york just for the weekend, and found this address in our trevling guide. Wow ! Amazing choice, it was hard to choose what we would eat ! Great oyster slection, and even if you are not an "oyster type", you have plenty of alternatives. I would recommend the oyster-tini for martini lovers (not myself, but girlfriend really loved it), or cucumber collins for cocktail lovers. Wine card is extensive (Austrian Gruner Vetliner is a try if you don't know that cepage) Was a bit noisy when we arrived, but if you get there after 8:30, gets more confortable. Even though it's not a romantic place (you are really close to your neighbours), I would definitivly recommend this for couples or groups. A must if you like seafood !"

  • "I made a reservation on Monday July 7th lunch time because their event calendar said that the day was the last day for Dutch herring. I've been there only this season for herring this last few years. I wondered why my server lady didn't give me any herring menu, so I asked her. She just said that "No more herring. Last Saturday was the last day." I told her that 7th was the last day on their calendar, but I didn't hear any apology from her. I just had a bowl of soup instead of herring. So disappointed."

  • "Food was great. It was supposed to still be herring festival time but they ran out of herring. I had blue fish. It was great."

  • "Made a reservation on a Saturday for dinner before a Broadway show. Patrons were much more casual than I anticipated even though staff was well dressed. We chose an oyster/clam appetizer...not bad, but not great. Dinner was ok...the Caesar salad had a good amount of crab & 3 unseasoned shrimp. Husband's butter garlic shrimp came with over cooked asparagus and oily rice pilaf. Place was pretty empty when we got there, but we still had people seated right next to us shortly after our arrival. A waiter found a menu holder and drummed for awhile before a manager asked them to stop. Our wait staff was knowledgeable. We skipped dessert and coffee. I expected more after the reviews, but left disappointed."

  • "Overall, I'd say that Grand Central Oyster Bar is okay, but not great. The clam chowder I ordered was tasty but could have been served hotter. My fish was cooked nicely, but the vegetables that came with it were overcooked and mushy. Finally, the service wasn't very attentive. The restaurant wasn't that crowded and the servers seemed to have enough time to stand around and chat with each other. However, I had to constantly ask for more water and the server rarely came by my table to ask if I needed anything. In general it was good, but I don't think that I'd recommend it."

  • "My wife and I have made it a tradition to have a lovely lunch at Grand Central Oyster Bar when we both get out early from work before the July 4th holiday. 2nd year running and it does not disappoint. The oysters are always sublime and we had the smoked trout appetizer which was great. Also, we enjoyed the herring filet and broiled black cod. So delicious."

  • "very crowded and noisy, could use more waiters, oysters were very good and waiter was knowledgeable about them, but Maine steamers were on the skimpy side and crab cakes were too rich"

  • "Skip this restaurant! The service is so bad, waiters are rude, management can't care less, and the draft beers are flat. NOT a place to take date, friends or family, unless you like to lose them. There are too many great restaurants in NYC that deserve your business."
    Dined on 7/2/2014
  • "This restaurant must have the largest seafood menu anywhere! It's all fresh and tastes fantastic. I dine here every time I'm in NY and look forward to my next visit."

  • "Trout was superb, as expected. The Guastavino tiled masterpiece of a room adds to the enjoyment."

  • "Probably best and freshest sea food in New York - great heritage value - my father came here already 60 years ago on his way from Rotterdam to San Fransisco - his recommendation - we loved it!"

  • "Ok, so it is loud and crowded, and you are surprised by that? It is in a train station for heaven's sake. But oysters, oysters, oysters, great seafood and Duvel on tap (it's a Belgian beer I have never seen on tap in so many years of searching.) So, seafood, booze, and don't be bothered by the tableful of loud businessmen from China. They are enjoying it, too."

  • "Several people told us to eat lunch at the Oyster Bar after our tour of Grand Central Station. Maitre'd was snooty and miffed when we requested a table away from a large noisy group. Big menu, big price tag! You get very little for the money. Service was slow and waiter was unattentive. At Grand Central I'd opt for someplace else."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "If you love oysters.. this is the place for you... oysters were excellent, scallops were good... the other fish dishes were just ok but not worth it for the money.. overpriced. (had the sea bass, and sole) cous cous was cold."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "we had herring filet, oysters and clams on the shell, and new england clam chowder. as this year's herring was too salty and a little bit fishy and we had only one filet each. although i was not satisfied with oysters and clams because they had undesirable after taste, my friends were quite satisfied. the best of the night was clam chowder. it was creamier and not salty with perfect creaminess. the first waiter was decent, but the second one didn't answer our questions and rushed us to order when we wanted to try more. we decided to wait for the first one with which we ordered more. we recommend to select decent waiters."

  • "We come every June for Dutch herring festival and they are really good. Wish they had better sake selection (more regional choice) with reasonable price since they have many Japanese customers. Service were just OK. we ordered oysters with one each of choice but came 2 each..."

  • "This is always a solid option for lunch and lunch with clients. The menu is diverse with lots of seafood options. The lobster roll, shrimp salad, soups (I have tasted a different soup each visit), and fried oysters are all delicious. The noise level is no problem at all, and the location is great (if you don't mind going through a train station to get there)."

  • "As a Kid my father used to take me on special occasions to NYC and we always ate at the Oyster Bar in Grand Central. Now that I am a father with adult kids, it is my turn to show them the truly classic NY Eateries, and for Seafood nothing beats the Oyster Bar. Prices are average NY food prices, but the fish is always impecably coocked, fresh and delicious, all appetizers are great, and naturally if you like Oysters, they have a vast selction. Drinks are good and not skimpy like in some eateries, where they will barely wet the glass they are served in. Service is very professional and efficiently fast. Do ask to be seated if possible in the smaller dinig room-bar to the right end of the main entrance and dinig room, its quieter and more cozy"

  • "I had never dined at the Oyster Bar before but I had heard about it for decades. It did not disappoint. The oyster pan roast was wonderfully rich and pleasing. The fresh seafood was top notch. And the clam chowder is now my 11 year old son's favorite ever!"

  • "I went with my husband and another couple. They enjoyed seafood and alcoholic beverages and LOVED them. I had the chicken (I don't eat fish, I came for the people!) which was unshockingly not great. We ordered pluot sorbet for dessert and sent it back because it was inedible - absolutely disgusting, retched after half of a bite. Dutch herring was amazing and the oysters, well, they're still talking about the oysters too! So happy to see them enjoy delicious seafood! Two employees couldn't find our Open Table reservation and kept asking if my name was Linda, which it isn't. Wouldn't bother using Open Table again."
