A word from Grand Cafe
Welcome to Grand Cafe

We are a modern French brasserie located in the heart of San Francisco, merging France’s timeless vibrancy with an unmistakable Bay Area flair. Our fresh take on traditional French cuisine is paired with an extensive wine list and hand-crafted apértifs, served in a gilded Barbary Coast ballroom.

But don’t let the grandeur fool you. Dress up, dress down – we are all of the French with none of the fuss. An authentic piece of San Francisco’s past coupled with food that is bold, vibrant and fun.

Just steps from the Curran Theater and nearby Union Square, the Grand Café is an in-the-know destination for locals and tourists alike. (We’ve even been told we’re the place where locals bring their out-of-town guests.) Come by and see for yourself.

Diner Reviews
  • "It was a nice experience. The food was good. The service was terrific."

  • "Dined here recently. Overall experience was decent. Before sitting down at our table we had a drink in the bar which was nice. Good ambiance and views of the busy street outside. The smells of the food coming from the restaurant smelled delicious. Upon sitting down at our table our server promptly asked if we were going to the theatre. We were not. This response must have dropped us in priority level. Our food did come out quickly and tasted fine. There were no issues there. The trouble came with our servers attention to us. We were never asked how the food was or if we would like another glass of wine or refill on our iced tea. The restaurant overall was not exceedingly busy so it's difficult for me to see an excuse for this."

  • "I was there with a party of seven. Even though I didn't care for what I ordered, I gave the food an overall very good because the other six in my party enjoyed what they ordered and I had many tastes of others selections. The menu is varied with choices for the adventurouse as well as the faint of heart."

  • "Grand Cafe is set in a beautiful high ceiling chandelier banquet room. Interesting metal sculptures throughout. Service was attentive and courteous. Food was generally above average. As the restaurant is quite large, it could easily accommodate large groups. The wine list was fairly extensive."

  • "The only real plus of the Grand Cafe is the Bar area, where it is best to buy food and drinks. The restaurant serves mediocre food. Although Onion Soup was good, Coq o Vin was heavy; Petrale sole had bitter vegetables around it. For the price, it isn't worth it. It is, however, a great convenience before theater and that is basically its only real redeeming feature."

  • "Excellent attention by the wait staff, good food and a romantic spot to dine before a play."

  • "We had an excellent meal at the Grand Cafe back in 1999 or 2000. At the time we both enjoyed excellent steaks and french onion soup, and we remember savoring the meal as well as the cozy and romantic atmosphere. When we had a chance to return recently, using opentable to get last minute reservations, it was very obvious why we were so easily able to get last minute reservations. The atmosphere is still lovely, but the food is not good. Not worth the cost, not worth the wasted chance to eat something better. It wasn't BAD, per se. The french onion soup still tasted good, and the iced tea was fine. My steak was salty yet tasteless, his duck was not great either. Service was slow and basically ignored us. We won't be back."

  • "Was pleased that the staff asked if we had an event to attend after dinner in order to accommodate us. The food was excellent, the ambiance relaxing, and the service attentive."

  • "The service at the Grand Café was awful!!! The Knowledge of the waiters were pathetic, we will not be going their again. We use to frequent this place when they had a superb waiter by the name of Robin, whom is no longer there!!! I blame management entirely!!! DO NOT WAIST YOUR TIMR OR MONEY!!!"

  • "Restaurant is convenient for a pre-theater dinner. The food was good but not special. Prices were a bit high for the quality of the food"

  • "Had a lovely brunch, in a truly magnificent setting. Surprisingly the best thing we had was the side salad and iced tea. Everything we had we really enjoyed. This place is a gem, will go back. The prices are awesome for what you get for your money."

  • "The restaurant looks like an old bank but is actually the old ballroom of the hotel. Tall ceilings with beautiful decor. Food was great. Ordered truffle fries, escargot and the duck and couldn't complain about any of them. Service was really good too. Would definitely come back."

  • "We were excited to go in for a Sunday brunch and were very disappointed. We sat at our table for a while without being greeted and when we finally were it was by a super awkward server who seemed flustered and overwhelmed. Our food came out really really fast and our check was dropped moments after our food arrived ( so rude.) Our server kept asking if our check was ready while we were still trying to eat and we had to ask multiple times for butter and refills. Anyway, the food was pretty good but I've never felt so rushed out of a restaurant. We will not be back or recommend this place."

  • "Had a nice evening with a group of 8 here. This location is ideal for visiting before theater - always let your wait staff know if you need to be out by a certain time. We enjoyed the beet salad and for the entree, the flank steak. Desserts were fine, but didn't knock our socks off. Most of them were unfinished - which may have been more of a reflection of the quantity of food we ate. If you like Mac and Cheese, definitely have theirs as an appetizer. Although the cocktails were petite, they tasted good. As a group, we appreciated that we had enough space to enjoy dinner and could hear all the conversations at our table."

  • "The ambiance of the Grand Cafe is still great but the food not so much."

  • "Ate dinner Wednesday night at Grand Cafe before "Venus in Fur" at the Geary. At the corner of Geary and Taylor with good food and excellent service, this restaurant is often our choice for pre-theatre dining. It was busy but not full and the noise levels are low enough to allow casual conversation at a normal volume. Soup was a delicious parsnip and sweet corn puree. Entrees were good but suffered from overly complicated and not completely successful vegetable pairings. Wine list is good but not a lot of choices by the glass, although the Borgogne Blanc the waiter recommended was delicious and paired perfectly with my trout."

  • "beautiful room, great service, but lacking in energy, lacking popularity."

  • "I love the ambiance created by the magnificent chandeliers, leather booths, lack of music but rather the gentle clinking and soft voices once heard in restaurants. The waiters move with purpose but never frantic, the food presentation is wonderful but not overly done, the flavors are unforgettable and I can't wait to go back."

  • "The food were okay. I find Chou Chou to catered more to my taste. The service were nothing spectacular. When I order my steak medium, I cut the center when it came to my table and found it well-done. The waiter were no where to be found, except for the busboy. He took the steak back and got me another one. The second one was kind of cold. I didn't want to hassle another time so I just ate it. The claims appetizer were good. I am not wow by their entree and the desert. I feel other French restaurants in the city are better in my opinion."

  • "Union Square can be very hit or miss when it comes to dinning options, but this place was one of the better options. The food is good and the ambiance is fantastic - it's a big restaurant with a very lively atmosphere."

  • "This restaurant was not busy on a Saturday night in SF which should have been a clue. We were staying at the hotel Monaco attached to the restaurant and had a discount coupon so we thought we would give it a try. The restaurant is beautiful but that's the only positive. The food was very average. Salad over dressed. Bottle of wine was warm as if it was not properly stored. Cassoulet had over cooked meat and under cooked beans. Olive oil cake stale. But worst was the server. Snooty, ignored tables , never checked back on the meal, would say "this is what we recommend" which was always the most expensive items. four tables around us had to flag down someone to get check. When we used the kimpton coupon the waiter made a sarcastic comment."

  • "I've eaten in the dining room at the Grand Café, but for lunch you are seated in the BAR lounge. Though very kind, the waiter had a very strong Mexican accent and I had trouble understanding what he was saying. The Croque Monsieur was nothing like the Monsieur that I've had in Paris bistros, not so "GRAND". It was "open face", not even warm, and bland. I should have ordered the burger. BTW the vinyl seating was torn up and a $75 luncheon for 3 this was not. The room was almost devoid of diners altogether. I would NEVER go back again."

  • "The Grand Cafe is indeed grand. As one of the 4 Ballrooms that survived the 1906 Earthquake, it has soaring ceilings, massive pillars, and retrofits recalling the Prairie or Craftsman periods, with huge porcelain chandeliers and mirrors edged by wood. The service was special, with Joe orchestrating the timing of the removal of our plates, and the arrival of the next course. They were kind enough to split the salad and entree we ordered between us on separate plates at their suggestion with no complaint. The food was delicious They even awarded us a complimentary dessert, as it was our anniversary. Check out the hotel lobby fireplace - 20 feet tall! I would go back for another special occasion, and to impress an out-of-town guest."

  • "I ordered the pork chop special for dinner and was VERY disappointed at the amount of fat on the chop plus how salty the mashed potatoes and asparagus were. The asparagus was also very over cooked. I cannot recommend it for dinner, but did enjoy the bar and had a wonderful Cosmo there!"

  • "I took a group of friends to the "Cafe" who had not been there, and we all had a most wonderful experience. The service was impeccable, the food was excellent, and everybody just loved the ambiance of this one-of-a-kind restaurant. We'll be back."

  • "It is as if a Parisian bistro were transplanted to the very heart of San Francisco, but on a larger - much larget - scale: a huge room, very high ceilings with art deco sculptures hanging from them, but still with nice, cozy lighting and only a slight murmur of full Saturday. The onion soup is correct; the black beans on, a good surprise and tje charcutetie, ok. The scargots I had were a bit sandy, but the sole served to my companion was perfect. The highlight went to the desert: a wonderful mix of savors came into the shape of warm crispy custard with berries and coconut&lime sorbet. The"

  • "Service was very slow! The server had trouble understanding the very first bear on their menu that we ordered, which reflects unfamiliarity with their own menu and poor training. A nearby table had to literally bang their utensils to get the server's attention so that they could simply have their bills."

  • "While the ambience is always beautiful (morning, noon or night), all meals are not the same. We tried it for breakfast - having loved our lunches & dinners in the past. Breakfast was a huge disappointment in terms of the quality of the most basic food - potatoes, bacon... The gravlax was beautifully presented & guests seemed to like it. But for the cost & the overall quality - I would not choose the Grand Cafe for breakfast again (too many other good options - including our hotel restaurant!)... It's been awhile since we had lunch or dinner there & I'm hoping they have maintained the quality we'd expereinced before. It is a lovely restaurant & has had some very good years. We will definitely try them again - just not for breakfast."

  • "As we sat down, the serve asked what we wanted for lunch. We asked for a chance to look at the menu. Fifteen minutes later, he arrived for our order. Fifteen minutes after that, we asked for some bread. Ten minutes after that, we asked for some butter. The food arrived -- fish and gravalox which were quite good but needing lemon. We waived our hands, clinked our water glasses and finally secured the attention of a busboy and waited yet another ten minutes for the lemon to arrive. Pay attention, guys."

  • "Had been here before for drinks but never dinner. Goes beyond the typical hotel-restaurant. Gorgeous interior. Quiet enough for conversation. Smooth service and smart maitre'ds. Food was surprisingly good. Charcuterie plate was so French. Dinner was delicious and none too fussy."

  • "for San Francisco - the Grand Cafe in the Hotel Monaco on Geary is great - art deco decor with huge rooms, mirrors and statuary, very excellent service and good food at prices well moderate for downtown SF. Glad I found it on my business trip"

  • "The Grand Cafe is perhaps not a premier foodie destination like some of the ethnic eateries such as Laconda, but when you consider the incredible decor, the location, and the fact that the food and wine selections are excellent, you must include the Grand in the Jardinaire-strata of great and comfortable higher end staples for anyone who wants very nice ambiance and really good food. It's a terrific place, and the chandeliers and tiered layout give it a classic feel."

  • "Although we've had a few nice meals here in the past, my chicken BLT was the worst sandwich I've had in years. The small thin piece of chicken in each half of the sandwich was grilled so long that it was charcoaled, bone-dry, and very tough. The piece of bacon was limp, as was the lettuce leaf. And the ciabatta bread also had black grill marks. If we hadn't been going to theatre, I would have--should have--sent it back."

  • "Honestly my partner and I came here on valentines day weekend and we were so excited to try some French cuisine. But our experience fell short of what we expected. Ordered the stake tar-tar as an app. and honestly, I've had better. Nothing impressive about it at all flavor a were bland. My partner ordered the muscles in three different ways and those were delicious! I wish we would have ordered more. Wonderful flavors! Then the entre I ordered was the trout. Again t was just okay. It was he first time I had it and I Even felt like it was just okay. Not enough seasoning and the veggies served with it seemed like they were sitting there for a while. I probably will not be coming back to grand cafe again. Sorry!"
