Grand CafeGreat ExperienceWith the Geary and Curran closed for the month, and ACT acting elsewhere right now - Grand Cafe is a lot less busy than usual, so the noise level was much less than it would be with a room full of theatergoers. The food is really good - just perfect for me. I had roasted kale salad and trout. This occasion was to go to the theatre with our 20 year old granddaughter. I was pleased that the waiter checked to see if we were headed to the theatre as he brought us our menus. The restaurant is located in a old building that the locals describe as "old San Francisco". Food is good, wine list is extensive, and the service from the server was very good too. The last time I was there, for reasons that I could not figure out, the server was in such a hurry. My food was just ok---I ordered the Tuna Nicoise ---my tuna was very dry, no olives (well apparently an olive tapenade but so little that I could not taste it), lots of crisp string beans but the sauce had no flavor. It was enough for an entree salad but a struggle to eat as it was just so bland. I also ordered the crab cake appetizer and it was not very flavorful---certainly not full of crab!
The wine was quite nice. And the meyer lemon creme bulee was wonderful.

They were out of trout at 6:30 pm, so I had the Coq au Vin, and my friend had the fish, which was a very small piece, and I had to share my chicken, of which there was plenty, with her. The cauliflower soup was wonderful, and her sald was nicely presented. Katie is just terrific. She has even called to update me regarding a seating arrangement before one of my reservations. I cannot say enough about waiter Gary. Not only does he know the night’s menu in detail, he is always at the ready with a recommendation or answer to a question. My husband had the duck breast and it was cooked perfectly and wasn't fatty at all. We were both very pleased with the food which was tasty and also presented in a beautiful fashion.
