A word from Grand Cafe
Welcome to Grand Cafe

We are a modern French brasserie located in the heart of San Francisco, merging France’s timeless vibrancy with an unmistakable Bay Area flair. Our fresh take on traditional French cuisine is paired with an extensive wine list and hand-crafted apértifs, served in a gilded Barbary Coast ballroom.

But don’t let the grandeur fool you. Dress up, dress down – we are all of the French with none of the fuss. An authentic piece of San Francisco’s past coupled with food that is bold, vibrant and fun.

Just steps from the Curran Theater and nearby Union Square, the Grand Café is an in-the-know destination for locals and tourists alike. (We’ve even been told we’re the place where locals bring their out-of-town guests.) Come by and see for yourself.

Diner Reviews
  • "The place is nice, attached to a hotel. Good decor. Was not crowded, and menu limited, but what we ordered was good - Steamed mussels, spinach and goat cheese omelet and BLT. Cappuccino was excellent. Service was not the best, we had to request our waiter numerous times to get things - he forgot our drink order, ketchup, extra napkins. With so many great brunch places in SF, I can't say I'd go back here agin."

  • "The ambience & decore is beautiful - who knew this gem was hidden away here? The menu is diverse & creative with a robust wine list & hand-crafted cocktails. Attached to Hotel Monaco, which is terrific too."

  • "We had an 8:30 reservation for two people. Our servers were nice, but we were rushed to order, our food came out in less than five minutes, be then we were pretty much asked to leave by 9:15. The food was ok and the people were nice enough, but it wasn't a nice night out in terms of overall experience. If you do go the steak is your best bet."

  • "We wanted someplace convenient to our hotel and found this wonderful place. Our experience was better than the average review on this site. The Coq au Vin was the best I've ever had and truffle fries were a great treat. I'd love to go back"

  • "I had all three meals there yesterday...close to other hotels, great for a business setting, very attractive cafe!"

  • "Because this restaurant is closing for renovations at month end, the wait staff (and possibly the kitchen staff) was light, which meant our waiter was spread too thin. Aside from the fact that he had to borrower menus from our table to take to another table, our food came out at different times. One guest finished his meal before another received hers. Hopefully, when the Grand Cafe reopens, they will revive their good reputation."

  • "Grand Cafe is closing and we had dinner before a show to remember days gone by. The food and service were as good as ever and this gem of the city will be moving on. Farewell & thanks for the memories."

  • "Dinner recently at the Grand Cafe was not as grand as it used to be...cocktails were served in small glasses, salads were meager, my steak was tough and chewy...i was disappointed! The Indian fry bread was also a sad appetizer..three slices of a potato on top with a little drizzled cheese..not worth the price.."

  • "It's a shame the food and service doesn't match the artistry of the room. Our reservation was set for 12:30 on a Sunday. Seating was not a problem; maybe others have figured out that Grand Cafe is not so grand anymore. Left unattended for a long while with a very short and unimaginative brunch menu, we spotted our harried server scramble about the room and kitchen, which was strange because the restaurant was not full or exceptionally busy. At one point, another server dropped by our table to bark the words, "That guy take your order yet?" then roll his eyes and huff at his colleague when we responded "no." Off went our second server, presumably to scold the first. I had a thoughtless omelet with giant chunks of squash. Sad, sad, sad."

  • "I love the ambience of Grand Cafe, its like stepping back in time! Another plus is its so near the theaters."

  • "The decor, especially the sculptures, was fun and warm. The food was mediocre. Service was excellent. Still a quiet comfortable fun place for a good long conversation with an old friend which is why we were there. Our objectives were achieved!"

  • " Server service poor, but bus staff prompt & courteous. Food good, but not special - and entree portions quite small - plate was 3/4's filled with fries. The room, however, is something special."

  • "We have been to the Grand many times prior to going to the theater. This time we had a large group before a matinee at the Curran. The food was excellent but pricey. However, I was convinced that our waiter took a lunch break during our lunch. The bottomless mimosas translated to a mimosa 15 minutes after it was ordered and it was never refilled until we insisted an hour later. Some of the meals showed up significantly after others had finished."

  • "Great brunch - my omelette may have been the best I've had. Beautiful room, good for conversation. Service is usually very good but this time was a bit inconsistent - our server came to take our order without knowing the day's soup, poured coffee refill when my cup was 3/4 full without asking, and 3 people started to grab our plates that each had a good amount of potatoes left. I'm going to miss the Grand Cafe!"

  • "Perfect for going to the Curran Theatre one block away. Had the Steak Frites. The frites were wonderfully hot, which is often not the case elsewhere. Meat was perfectly cooked. Halibut was delicious. They could do a better job on the quality of the bread served, but it kept me from overeating at least. Service was very cordial and quick."

  • "We went there for a work breakfast meeting before a conference, and found the service to be wonderfully attentive, but despite several requests to ensure one of the people received hers without milk or cheese being used, it arrived with cheese. (This is why I rated the service lower.) The waiter even had come back to confirm the request before the food came out. The breakfast menu was severely limited (which is why I rated the food lower), but the food was very good once it came out. We loved the ambiance in the old historic hotel setting."

  • "I loved this restaurant for years...what happened?? I was visiting San Francisco so was excited to visit one of my favorite restaurants while I was there. They sat me in a corner booth...and that was pretty much all that happened for at least 8 (if not longer). Finally a waiter came by and apologized (I appreciated that) and said he would be back...probably another 8 minute wait. The restaurant was busy, but not "crazy" busy! Finally the waiter arrived, took my order, left again and I waited some more!! Waiter came back (5-8 minutes ?) and told me they gave me the wrong menu and I could only order the onion soup-which he had already ordered with kitchen..giving me no option. Finished soup, wine finally came, along with the bill."

  • "We have enjoyed the Grand Café in the past. This time food was late and poor served. Denny's has better presentation. Yukon potatoes were French fries and artisan toast was two cold slices of French bread without butter or jam. This will be our last visit to the Grand Café."

  • "Almost the half of menu was not available, overall the restaurant at the saturday night was empty! The food was not good as well, very specific taste, was impossible to eat. The waiter took away the full plate and even didn't ask what is wrong with it. Though the interior is pretty nice. But do not choose this restaurant. Spoilt"

  • "After enjoying a great dinner on a June Sunday night, we decided to invite family to a birthday dinner at the Grand Cafe on a subsequent Saturday night. Seven of us nestled into a quiet corner next to the kitchen, but that was okay. Mike, our server, was terrific, as were all of the staff and manager Joe. The issue was that they ran out of the Cut of the Day special, as well as the steak frites, which 5 of us had ordered. We were surprised that not enough food was on hand for a Saturday night. What we were served was delish, just not our first choices."

  • "everything about our dinning experience was perfect; ambiance, service, food and wine. I was just a bit surprised that there weren't a few more selections on the menu but the duck two of us had was delicious and the other meals served were also raved about so I guess it's quality not quantity that counts! :)"

  • "Dining at the Grand Café was grand! Regrettably, my dining companion could not leave the office until later, so I was the only diner. I chose the duck, which was absolutely superb. When it's available I frequently choose duck, but this breast was probably the best I have had in a long time. It was medium rare, and the meat was to tasty and tender you could almost cut it with a form. It arrived on a bed of spaetzle with peas for color which was an inspired combination. I had a small salad, however, there could have been a tad less dressing on the salad. I will definitely go back and this time my dinner companion promises to make it."

  • "With its close proximity to the Curran theater, this is a great place to grab great eats before the entertainment. If you've got some extra time, sit in the main restaurant in the back. 30-60 min prior to the show? Hang out up front in the bar area and gnosh. I had the mussels & frites, which were delicious. They have a great wine list, but the beer list seems limited although with good options. Groups of 6+ may have some challenges with seating, but any other size can easily be accommodated."

  • "As soon as my daughter and I sat down for lunch, the waiter told us the restaurant is closing on July 31. Unfortunately, I think the staff is already checking out. The service was atrocious, and the food was just okay. Light fixtures were already missing, like the restaurant is slowly being dismantled around its diners. It was just sad."

  • "We have come here since the restaurant opened. It is one of the prettiest restaurants in San Francisco. Food has gone from very good to average and service this last time was rushed. The restaurant is due to close for a renovation and re energizing and it is a good thing. This last visit was just to say farewell."

  • "But...when I arrived to 'Checkin' with a reservation, there was no one at 6 pm as greeter/hostess though many guests were seated. When the gal arrived, she was inappropriately dressed in the shortest black hot pants I've ever seen, carrying her takeout coffee cup with lid. Were we at a Strip club? Had to ask waiter for more bread. He was okay, but the experience was taken down a notch by his wearing blue jeans. Other servers wore blue jeans. I would consider The Grand Cafe an upscale French restaurant. Could have fooled me. I took a good friend for a nice meal and it was above average food wise, but not as memorable as it used to be. The sorbet and ice cream was good, but mine arrived without a cookie. Shoddy folks. Next time, The Rotunda"

  • "Food and service were perfect -- what more needs to be said. Here's a tragedy -- our server told us that the Grand Cafe is closing in late August and will be no more. There will be some new and vastly smaller restaurant, with an entirely different cuisine, in the front room. I am just massively sad."

  • "Grand Cafe will be closing soon. It was wonderful sitting and enjoying her views for the last time. The ornate bar is a sight to behold."

  • "Service was very slow and unhelpful, oysters were delicious but most restaurants wouldn't include an oyster the size of your small fingernail in the dozen count, let alone two."
    Dined on 6/9/2014
  • "Food was god awful and the service was worse. The only redeeming quality of this establishment is it's bar. Wasn't there for cocktail hour, but it ambience is very bistro and looks like it could be fun. Will not go again for the food."

  • "I had been to The Grand Cafe for lunch a few times, but never for dinner. I love the ambiance and the service has always been friendly while still being efficient. The dinner menu was varied and it was actually difficult to choose just one item. It's definitely a go-to restaurant while in the Union Square area."

  • "4 of us (Marin and NYC) had dinner a few nights ago. My Gnocchi was tasteless, some burnt, drenched in oil, etc! Bouillabaisse at about the same level, trout was just okay and my wife liked her mussels but thought portion was small compared to other places. Our server tried his best, might have been his first night? Wasn't sure about various preps and menu items. Cheesecake was good. It's a great looking restaurant and if the food had been at least good, everything would have been excellent. We enjoyed our time at the restaurant, but it wasn't because of the food. Thanks, Zeny Cieslikowski ...cizen@aol.com "

  • "I was told that Grand Cafe is closing soon for renovations. Too bad, for it's a lovely old-fashioned room and the soon-to-be laid off staff experienced and friendly. On the plus side, it's a few steps from the ACT. Downside, everything's a little pricey. My cocktail and entree were quite good, but the desserts were a little odd: I opted out of the popcorn creme brulee (sounded a little too out there) and tried the strawberry shortcake; it was okay except for the row of dessicated "strawberry chips" across the top. Nonetheless, I'll be curious to see what the future holds for this grande dame."
