A word from Grand Cafe
The Grand Cafe is a charming, romantic neighborhood café, offering classic American and Continental bistro fare, situated in a beautiful space that once held an old world European bakery. The kitchen utilizes the best local and seasonal product to craft such dishes as Duck Confit, Braised Short Ribs,Daily Fish Specials, Home-cured duck proscuitto, hand-rolled gnocchi, pasta, crackers and more. The pantry-to-table approach imbues brunch, lunch, dinner and Pivate Dining menus with unparalleled freshness, and has garnered critical acclaim – Mpls St. Paul Magazine's Dara Moskowitz writes "The best Unknown Restaurant in Town: Great and Simple Coexist at Minneapolis's Grand Cafe", and Andrew Zimmern calls Grand Café “one of the most romantic spots around". Grand Cafe is located in South Minneapolis, 5 minutes from downtown & uptown, & 15 min from airport.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was very good. Cheese fondu was awesome! Crackers were very good and original. The argonotti (sp?) pasta was disappointingly bland."

  • "My girlfriend and I had been getting tired of the usual Uptown restaurants in Calhoun Square so we decided to branch out and try something new after my Dad had recommended going to Tuesday Night Date Night at The Grand Cafe and we had a great time with great food. Service from Manu the bartender and John our server was awesome and they made it a great experience for us. Highly recommend this place any night of the week and especially on Tuesday nights where they have Date Night where you get a bottle of wine and a 3 course meal for $50! Check it out!"

  • "I have enjoyed this restaurant each time I have come. The small menu has really interesting entrees with great sauces on each dish. I really liked the poached snapper with edamame and the fondue with grilled veggies is a nice and different appetizer. The cozy feel of the Cafe with two separate dining areas and all the dark wood is a perfect atmosphere. My complements to the chef!"

  • "I hope the Twin Cities never lose small gems such as the Grand Cafe. The chef's creative combination of vegetables with meat (pork for me and beef for my companion) was incredibly delicious. We had the whole gamut, including wine, salad, flourless chocolate cake and decaf coffee for dessert. And, the service couldn't be better."

  • "Had an excellent experience here! Chose for a romantic dinner before going to a concert. simple menu but very nice complex flavorful items. Thanks for a fabulous romantic meal! Staff was perfect, attentive and helpful yet not hovering. Meal was delicious! We will be back!"

  • "With our party of 7 we ordered most every thing on the menu. Every meal was very good, I had the eggs en cocotte - and it was outstanding, the eggs where cooked just right and the rich cream & cheese & puff pastry was a perfect match. The service was excellent -our table was ready when we got there and our coffee cups where always full. Definitely want to go back."

  • "We brought a new friend to Grand Cafe as an introduction to our great food options in the Kingfield Neighborhood. We were cared for and fed extremely well. We especially appreciate how Mary, makes connections with diners, it is comforting to have her approach your table and instantly make you feel at home. Tasty and well presented!"

  • "We can't tell you how the food was because we never got that far. We made reservation one week before Valentine's Day. When we arrived to the restaurant, we were offered a table next to the kitchen along the walkway where flocks of waiters were zooming back and forth. The dining room with white linen was out of our reach and we only hoped that great aromas from the kitchen and a great meal to come would be a consolation for the lack of atmosphere. ...well...twenty minutes later we were still sitting and staring at the menu... Despite multitude of waiters passing by our table, none of them stopped and offered us a drink or just an apology for being overwhelmed and busy. After twenty five minutes of patient waiting, we left."

  • "We enjoyed Tuesday Date Night and the set menu. The meal was delicious, and it was fun to have it all inclusive! The wine was memorable, the server was very friendly and so knowledgeable. The room was cozy, and the candles were warm and inviting. It was a memorable night!"

  • "great good - i had lamb, date had chicken. both were incredible. beer and wine only (no liquor, just an FYI). booth seating is not comfortable (table sits too low compared to booth height, and booths ran out of cushion/support 50 years ago). friendly, smiling service."

  • "We went for their Tuesday "Date Night" special. We learned that they're known for their weekend brunch and sidewalk seating during the summer. Dinners have not been their mainstay, but with the meal we had they certainly deserve a try. Great value, and our waiter Manu was very accommodating. We'll be back."

  • "Food continues to be exceptional......very innovative. Wait staff were knowledgeable and friendly Owner was mingling with customers and seeking out comments from the diners."

  • "I want to like you Grand Cafe, I really do, but your service is consistently lousy. The food is humanely raised and locally sources and can be delicious when served hot. However, EVERY time I've been here the service and kitchen have been a disaster. It's not an excuse to be busy--you should expect that and plan for it. Even the coffee refills coming out of the pots was cold. Not sure how that happens! The servers were nice, but neglectful. If they can turn their service around, I'll be back, otherwise, it's not worth it."

  • "We arrived on time for our reservation and the host person had no record of it. The place was absolute chaos as far as seating. It was New Year's Day, but they acted like they'd never been busy before. We stood and waited for almost 30 minutes before we were given a small booth by the door. We were not given menus. Eventually the host guy returned with menus. It was another 15 minutes until we were greeted by a waiter. So frustrating! It took for ever to get the check and get our credit card processed. The food was good, but nothing exceptional. Many other places to go in the city with equal or better food without all the hassle."

  • "Always appreciate the ability to get there late in evening and still have a wonderful meal. Service is always nice and professional. Wine list has a nice variety and reasonably priced."

  • "Short menu; it would be good if items were better described. The daily special wasn't at all what we expected from the server's description, but tasty. Service was pleasant but slow. Our server substituted a different soup than the special we had ordered, serving the replacement without confirmation from us and with only the slightest apology that she was "sure we'd like it." I liked it. My companion wished she had been given an opportunity to order a salad instead. Another of my companions got the wrong side dish. It was cheerfully replaced. Recommended for diners who are experimental or flexible with plenty of time, especially those looking for a nice place to chat. It was not a good choice for a working day business lunch."

  • "All the food was perfectly delicious. I ordered the pork chops with polenta and chard, with pickled chard stems. Outstanding textures and flavors. Spice cake for dessert was moist with the just the right balance of spice and sweetness. The ambiance seemed perfect for our little three-person family celebration. Lighting was not too dark, not too bright, and noise level allowed for relaxed conversation. This is a lovely place."

  • "Although the food is very good, the menu is very short. If you don't like the few choices, you will be in trouble. They are very accomodating to make menu substitutions if available however as changing polenta to potatoes. There was a party in the back room that was noisy so the seating was dicey. If you arrived after the front tables were taken, you enjoyed a loud evening. It is a pleasant atmosphere not hurried with attentive waitstaff. the menu offerings are not run of the mill- maybe a little too strange for some. You have to be adveturous. Overall a lovely evening."

  • "What a treat. We went there before Jungle Theater and wait staff were very conscious of our time. Fish special was OUTSTANDING. Ravioli equally so. House wine, both red and white, were a big cut above normal. Great choice for dining."

  • "The menue is simple and varied enough for the meat lovers and vegitarians to find something each would like. Enjoyed the owner coming over to our table and checking on us. New, calmer, paintings would be nice, but otherwise the location and inside is perfect for a dinner for two or a group. Will be back again and again."

  • "I had been to Grand Cafe once before with my husband and loved the food. So when trying to find a place for me and seven friends to gather and enjoy an evening together I jumped at the chance to visit again. Not disappointed! We had wonderful service was incredible and gave us lots of time to catch up without interruptions! The food was out of control; Moroccan Chicken is a must! Cheese plate, beet salad, pita, truffles, wine: all top notch. Do not miss the opportunity to dine here!"

  • "We had a wonderful time meeting friends and enjoying the fine food and wine at Grand Cafe. We have always appreciated the food and ambiance and return there regularly. Discovered when the next day that my husband handsomely tipped the waiter having not heard that the gratuity had already been included. Hope he enjoyed the bonus."

  • "What a treat to be out to dinner with another couple and actually be able to talk and be heard in normal tones! On top of that the food was fabulous. One meal came out not very warm but immediately taken care of. Knowledgable waitstaff. We will return again."

  • "There's no real spot to wait when you arrive, and it took what felt like 5 minutes before someone greeted us, and then we still had to wait a while to sit down, even though 2 tables cleared just as we arrived. The service was great overall once we were seated. The melange plate was phenomenal! My husband had the duck special - fine but the polenta was ehh. Needed seasoning. The squash ravioli was a disappointment. Not enough squash and the endive was out of place. But dessert was exceptional and I was so prepared to be let down. Almond cake was moist, rich and the whipped cream balanced it well."

  • "My dining partner ordered salmon with basmati rice the only problem was that it arrived with wild rice. These are two very different things. I ordered the sirloin which was totally in edible. After many attempts to cut it, I got a piece off the hunk of fat and grizzle. I could not even chew it. The vegetables that came with it were over cooked to the point of mush. I paid for this even though it should have been obvious to the server that I did not eat this. When I brought this to his attention, I was thanked for being gracious."

  • "We had great service and the food was delicious. My date (visiting from Chicago) ordered the duck special and said it was the best he'd ever had. My salmon was also great. Portion sizes are perfect, wine selection is good, dessert was tasty and the atmosphere is cozy with good energy during the normal peak hours. I only wish they were open a bit later because we were the last table and left at 10:15. If they'd been open later and there was more of a buzz, we probably would have ordered another bottle of wine! We also went back for brunch the next morning, as Victor's was too busy. The brunch was also delicious!"

We enjoyed everything there! I had the egg en cocotte and it was perfectly made!! The service was great and very courteous!! I would definately go back tnext time when I am in town!"
