Diner Reviews
  • "I had very high expectations, with all the hype. My view is probably skewed because I had been to another fabulous restaurant the night before that was incredible, so Gramercy had stiff competition. We were alarmed at the very long wait between courses. One server dripped water all over me and my glasses. Another could not be understood and got mad when we asked him to repeat himself. I did ask for my lamb to be medium well, so I partly brought in on myself, but my masseter muscles got quite the workout chewing. Other courses were fabulous - the beet salad with quinoa, the agnolotti with corn and ricotta, the flounder with cherries. My cookie tray was adorable, served with milk and a straw."

  • "Longtime fan of Gramercy Tavern. Sadly have been a bit disappointed by the food (seasonal tasting menu) during the last two visits. Simply not up to the standard that GT has long been known for. My wife and I loved the cod, halibut, and duck portions of the menu, but the scallop portion was a bit too fishy tasting, and the tagliatelle too sour/acidic. We also found the apricot panna cotta dessert to be bland and not sweet enough. Service and ambiance of course continued to be exemplary, but the missteps on the menu prevented the evening from being a memorable experience."

  • "There is so much competition in The New York restaurant business that you have to be excelent and special just to survive. To be consistently among the top tables in the city you need to be able to provide a unique experience, Gramercy does it again and again..."

  • "And, we loved the sparkling Chardonnay to start! Great food, great service, nice table spacing, just a lovely dinner. Gramercy Tavern has never failed us, even after all these years."

  • "I have been here a number of times. While the food was excellent as usual but the service has definitely not what it used to be. The server was hard to understand and felt that tables around us got much better attention. Unlikely I will return to this restaurant again since there are lot more restaurants that have excellent food and much better service for the money spent here."

  • "One of the best meals I have had in a decade. Exquisite, delicious, relaxed, just perfect!"

  • "Took the boyfriend here to celebrate his birthday it's his favorite and my first time. We chose to do the tasting menu the seasonal (meat) and veggie options, amazing! We couldn't decide on what bottle of wine to get so Alan our waiter said he would choose for us that we we could start with white and finish with red. He not only choose great wines but had superb instinct of when we needed another and what kind for each dish. There was one that really stood out so I ask if they could write it down for me, they came back with a note in an envelope which I thought was a lovely touch. They also brought out a beautiful little cake and gave us muffins for the next day to celebrate my boyfriend's bday. An expensive meal but worthwhile!"

  • "My partner and I went to Gramercy for our four year anniversary while holidaying in New York. I had heard good reviews and had been recommended by a colleague who is known to be very particular about where he dines. We arrived an hour early for our booking to see if we could have a drink at the bar while waiting. We were told they would see if there was anything they could do and, sure enough, there was a romantic corner table available. We ordered the 3 courses and we're not disappointed! The food was incredible, and attentive service. We took our time eating and enjoying the wine, and were treated to a complimentary desert with 'Happy Anniversary' written on it in chocolate. A night we will surely remember!! Cannot wait to go back again!"

  • "The food is up there with the other top fine dining restaurants in the city, but GT has a better overall vibe. Open up your wallet and enjoy the pre fixe experience."

  • "The food could have been better. Serving size are quite small for the price. The menu doesn't change often enough. It could have been more seasonal. My pork loin entree with pork belly was strange. The texture of the loin was limp and squishy and there was a minuscule little square of pork belly the size of a crouton. Very I appealing. Skip the dining room and eat The bar menu!"

  • "What is this ??? 92 USD for an untasteful, with small quantities and poor original menu ??? Not again."

  • " It was a particularly special occasion being my 22nd anniversary and my wedding night. Although I didn't expect mountains to be moved for us, I would have thought the experience deserved a little gravity from more than the very sweet and kind front of house staff. Our waiter was personable and informed but the overall service was not exceptional. I have been to this restaurant many times when everything was seamless and ran like clockwork. Unfortunately it wasn't on this special night. The food was good but not as good as times past. Maybe it was an off night. With all the other amazing restaurants in the city I really believe Gramercy Tavern needs to examine all operations if they want their loyal fans to keep coming back."

  • "We had a really nice evening and the service was outstanding. We had 3 desserts plus the tray of bite sized ones and found them all disappointing. We were surprised as everything else was wonderful. We will come back but will opt for the cheese next time instead of the over produced and bad desserts."

  • "Extremely overpriced for average tasting food. $96.00 for a small appetizer, entre (3 small slices of lamb shoulder, 2 bites of sausage & some ratatouille) and desert. Worst of all was nothing was really special for the palate. Doubtful any of the four of us would ever return to this place which is highly rated and always sold out."

  • "The food was wonderful. We had the vegetarian tasting and nver thought vegetables could taste so good. Every course was a pleasant surprise."

  • "My wife and I had the tasting menu on August 2 and we could not have been more impressed. Each course was superb. Service was friendly and non-obtrusive. Each dish was delivered with a quick (rather than long-winded) explanation. Staff had clearly tasted everything and were knowledgeable, made excellent wine recommendations and were very flexible, for example, by changing our dessert option. The food was expensive but reasonable for what you get. We left well-fed but not feeling overly stuffed as is sometimes the problem with these menus. This is a must try for anyone wanting fine dining"

  • "I moved away and brought my wife and daughter to NYC for the first time and G.Tavern was incredible. We had our 10 month old with is and they made sure not to make us feel out of place with the only baby in the restaurant. Of course, the food was fantastic an the service wonderful as usual. Thank you very much!"

  • "My girlfriend and I came for a Friday lunch and both had the 5 course tasting menu in the main dining room. We enjoyed the lobster and fish courses but thought the duck was the best! I had a few glasses of wine with lunch which our waiter helpfully recommended. For dessert they brought an extra chocolate cake which was very kind. The only critical comment I would make is that the dress code is certainly not enforced. I saw a guy wearing shorts and running shoes at one table and a woman in jean shorts in another. If the reservation department calls in advance to remind you of the "business casual" dress code they should probably enforce it. Nevertheless, all in all a solid experience for a nice occasion. Will be back for sure."

  • "There is always something new on the menu and I have never been disappointed. The tasting menu gives you great flavors and textures at each course. They obviously care about the quality of the ingredients they use because you can see how the menu changes to accommodate what is in season at the time."

  • "As I have for many years, I had a birthday lunch at Gramercy Tavern. When they confirmed the reservation they asked if I were celebrating a birthday. I said I was, but had recently had a death in my family so I did not need any accommodation; I was not celebrating. However my lunch guest told the waiter something entirely different, and I was given a very nice birthday dessert (in addition to my usual cheese plate.) The food and service were wonderful, as usual, and my out-of-town guest was suitably impressed and requested to join me for my birthday next year as well."

  • "The service was not what I have come to expect at a Danny Meyer restaurant. In the past, you never had to search the room for your waiter. A dinner should not take three hours."

  • "We are not hicks. We are from Boston and enjoy all types of food and fine dining. We were looking for something special on our 30th wedding anniversary and we found it. They asked in advance if it was an occasion - as a result we were treated to Proseco before dinner and a wonderful extra dessert (layered coconut cake with Happy 30th written on the plate. We chose the tasting menu. Each of the 6 courses was wonderful. Lobster salad, duck breast, haddock, squid ink spaghetti. Portions were appropriately modest given the number of them. Just might go back there before our 50th Anniversary."

  • "This is an excellent restaurant in food quality, service and ambience. We enjoyed the prix-fixe menu with a bottle if good Italian wine. The price was close to $200 per person (including tax and tip). This was definitely too high!"

  • "One of the best restaurants I have been to. Everything was perfect, menu, food, service, set up, ambience and lighting. Had a great evening!"

  • "What a perfect place to celebrate a wedding anniversary! That's what my wife and I did. But Gramercy Tavern would be perfect for any occasion. The service was outstanding -- friendly and knowledgeable -- and the food was even better. We selected the tasting menu, which was something to remember. I'm still talking about the carrot juice with citrus froth and my wife is still talking about the duck. Oh, our server helped us pick the perfect bottle of wine ... really amazing!!! Give Gramercy Tavern a visit; I'm sure you'll have an evening to remember!!!"

  • "My family had prix fix dinner at Gramercy Tavern. The food & service were great! Each course was as good or better than the last. From the complimentary starter to the complimentary finish everything was perfect (well maybe the desert was weird - apricot something). But it did not matter, all before it was too good."

  • "Had a reservation but had to wait to be seated and didn't get our favorite table, which we had requested a month in advance. Fourth visit but left us with bad taste in our mouths. Expensive restaurant and you expect great service and attention to detail."

  • "I took my family of six to Gramercy Tavern for lunch while in NYC this past month. I had a reservation. Because my family had split up for the morning activities, we didn't all arrive ON TIME for our reservation. The hostesses where wonderful. They sat us without the complete party. We had a glass of wine while waiting. The food was incredible! Everything we ordered was outstanding. This was our favorite restaurant of our trip."

  • "Entres were superb....chilled corn soup and pasta based dish. That's where it ends. Main course..fish bland with very odd accompaniments, i.e. tomato! Not asked cooking preference and pork unedible as so rare and chewy. Pork needs a sweet accompaniment and again, they didn't mesh well.. It is as if the chef is trying too hard and gathering ill fitting collection to 'make the dish' ultra a la cart! Dessert again...over kill. Why not keep it simple. Was like a pub creation. Service was sadly a little slow.. Our mistake as should have chosen the bistro. We didn't complain then.... For a $300 evening for 2.... We just laughed our way home. Sorry so harsh but really and truly....this restaurant was highly recommended and it made me very sad."
