A word from Grace - Portland
Grace Restaurant offers a first rate menu in an atmosphere of artistic mastery. In 2009 the historic Chestnut Street Church, in downtown Portland, was restored to its original beauty while creating a modern interior that both complemented the sculptural details of the church and reflected the innovative cuisine of chef, Peter Sueltenfuss. Diner Reviews
  • "Waited 20 minutes past our reservation time then it took 15 minutes after we were seated to take our drink orders. Salad was amazing the entree I chose was not. We waited for 30 minutes after we finished our salad until we got our entree. I ordered the "gnocchi" for an entree, they were potato patties about the size of scallops and burnt on the bottom. The place is neat but the food and service need lots of work. We won't go back for food, maybe for drinks if we can order more than one an hour."

  • "Food was quite good, as was service. But the amazing thing about Grace was the ambiance. Grace is in a former church, replete with stained glass and soaring beams. I was worried that I would feel uncomfortable, but Grace has worked hard to blend with their atmosphere. Servers wear a distinguished black, ad do the show kitchen staff. Music when I was there was gospel. The circular bar was fairly quiet. The only downside to this experience was the arwa--not one of Portland's finest."

  • "I don't know how it happened but Portland has become the restaurant capitol of New England, there are more first rate restaurants there than anywhere else on the East Coast besides New York. Grace is another example of an excellent Portland restaurant. It's located in a converted 19th century church which gives it a unique ambiance. We started with oysters and fois gras, then had lobster stew and duck. Everything was delicious. I wish OpenTable allowed fractional starts because I would like to have rated them a 4.5 instead of 4. The reason that I didn't rate them at 5 was because I want to reserve that for the absolute best restaurants, in Portland I think that honor still belongs to Hugo's, but no one will be disappointed with Grace."

  • "We had a wonderful experience with our evening at Grace. The place was clean, people were attentive and the food was delicious. While it certainly is on the pricey side for a special occasion I think it is worth it. However, if you go and enjoy the entree part the price is reasonable and the atmosphere can't be beat."

  • "I had notified the restaurant ahead of time that we would be going to the theater and our waiter greeted us with this knowledge. Service was prompt but not hurried. The music was lively but not loud or obtrusive. Thank you for that, Grace! Nothing we ordered was what we expected but everything exceeded our expectations. For an appetizer we shared an order of mussels. We were pleasantly surprised when they arrived already shucked. The sherry and creme fraiche sauce was an appreciated twist on the usual tomato based sauce. Our dinners were superb. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the no-work lobster stew which was abundant with juicy lobster."

  • "We LOVE Grace!!We recently moved to the Portland area from the New York City area and had many wonderful meals at many wonderful restaurants in NYC. We are happy to say that Grace makes us feel like we are back home again!! Wonderful menu and fantastic ambiance. Job well done!!"

  • "Great ambiance. Excellent food and service. The original church is still mostly intact including the stained glass windows. Would recommend to anyone seeking a great dining experience. Another of Portland's seemingly endless number of first rate restaurants. Definitely the best small city foodie destination in the country."

  • "I reserved a table for 7 at grace for a bachelorette dinner and our entire experience was absolutely amazing. Upon arrival the hostesses were very nice and conversational as was our server. The food was delicious and nearly everyone at the table cleaned their plates. Last but not least was the amazing decor of the renovated church with original beams and stained glass - Grace has the unique ability to make any meal feel special!!"

  • "Our meal was terrific and the service was great. We`ve been eating our way through the Portland foodie cornucopia and Grace was one of the top two places (tied) we`ve found so far. It`s setting in a converted church is beautiful, and certainly unusual."

  • "Walking in the front door I wondered if I had made a mistake by booking a table here but once the curtains parted the scene changed dramatically, Grace is in an old Methodist church and character and charm have been kept in tact. The bartender upstairs, Bert, was entertaining and once seated at our table the waitress was prompt and knowledgeable. The dining experience was delightful."

  • "The setting is great...sitting upstairs in the balcony overlooking the bar and kitchen gives you a sense of the former church. Great cocktails and the food was a good match. Very attentive service...overall great place to enjoy a nice meal with some local ingredients."

  • "The hanger steak was recommended and didn't disappoint. The molasses butter was awesome with the bread. The wine list was very reasonably priced. The wait staff was knowledgeable and attentive. Great vibe and easy to have conversation."

  • "Grace hits the mark on atmosphere, drinks, and food all topped off by first-class service."

  • "Seated promptly, though no surprise as many empty seats. Waiter arrived, never introduced self, with long delay after filling water glasses before coming back for drinks. Once food was ordered, it took over 45 minutes to arrive, though there did seem to be a party upstairs, so that could be the cause. When food arrived, very unimpressed. I had ordered the hanger steak medium rare, and it was raw. I'm not averse to rare, so I didn't complain, but still, a restaurant stating to be that caliber should know how to cook a steak. Decent flavor, and the sides were above average. Dessert much better, but not the wow that was expected. Pineapple mousse and coconut cake. Cake was stale. Overall not impressed and don't plan on going back."

  • "Annual valentines day goto for my fiance and I. Great food, amazing ambience, good drinks, but pricey. Never had a bad meal here. Whatever sweetbreads appetizer they have, order it and thank me later. For dinner, have yet to run into a bad steak (skirt, flank or sirloin) and their chicken dish was good too. Desserts are also really good, I would recommend anything that involves their homemade ice cream. For drinks, their spicy (jalapeno?) margarita is a must and their white sangria is our old reliable. The ambiance is second to none in Portland, located in a renovated old church, that maintains most of its features. Sit on the second floor by the kitchen if you can. Be ready to pay $100+ if you drink with dinner."

  • "Had a wonderful meal on what was a very busy night for the restaurant. The server was attentive but not intrusive and had great recommendations. The house made bread and molasses butter was amazing.. we both had the rib eye and it was cooked to perfection.. the only complaint that I had was that the enormous rib eye was only accompanied by 3 brussel sprouts.. they were delicious but it didn't balance out the meal. The banana cake with pistachio crumble was sinful, and that alone would be worth a return trip."

  • "You must check out this restaurant when visiting Portland. The space is amazing and such a great concept. On a side note I think I would have enjoyed some snacks and a drink in the upstairs bar over a full meal. We started with some tuna sashimi which was dumped onto our table in a tiny plate with no accoutrements, it was sad. Next ordered the marrow, which we had to request additional toast points, but an interesting starter. Dinner was the flank steak which the husband enjoyed and I had the butter poached lobster pasta. Steak was better than the pasta which was nice but not worth the price. I had to asked for a stemmed wine glass. Waitress was extremely helpful and service was good. The space is beautiful and great details."

  • "Great spot. Unique is an understatement. Staff was knowledgable. Food was excellent. Brought our two teenagers who were impressed mom and dad could pick something so cool. Somehow feels like a neighborhood place while also having the wow factor of the location. Tough street parking. Great choice for us."

  • "We went to Grace to celebrate our anniversary. The appetizers were excellent and out entrees were fantastic. Our server was very personable and went our of her way for us. While we were there, the music suddenly changed and a guy got down one one knee and proposed. It was great that the staff helped to make the moment special. Overall, a must try!"

  • "A group of 6 of us recently had a reservation for 8pm on a Saturday. 2 members of our group are from out of town and have been anxious to try Grace; yet 8pm was too late for a full meal. We decided to eat earlier and then keep our reservation for dessert. Upon being seated and asking for dessert menus; the hostess exclaimed, "I'll have to check with manager. We don't take reservations for dessert." Huh?? I made a reservation in advance and showed up for my reservation. It's just not good business to dictate what your customers can and can not order under their reservation. I was in absolute shock. We were allowed to stay and the dessert, drinks and service were absolutely impeccable - but the thing that sticks with us is the initial comment"

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who just wants a night out or a really romantic evening. this was perfect and i couldn't of asked for a better place to propose to my future wife. thank you grace and staff. you made my night. sincerely and with many many thanks, Ryan Carson."

  • "Went to Grace expecting it to be great and was not disappointed. It's gorgeous inside, and while being one of the fancier restaurants in Portland it doesn't feel stuffy at all. The service was attentive and friendly. We tried the bone marrow, two cheeses, and I got the ribeye while my fiancé got a hanger steak. All the sides were delicious too. It's expensive but I think it's worth it at least once:"

  • "My pork chop was incredibly dry. Her scallops were done well. over all the food was ok but not spectacular. It was a pleasant evening over all. Very friendly staff and nice ambiance with a piano player all evening. Food was so so.."

  • "The staff was very friendly. When asked our waitress what she recommended, without hesitation she explained everything on the menu which was incredibly helpful. The dress attire ranged from jeans to dresses/dress pants so you could fit in no matter what you were wearing.. The food was amazing! I'm actually craving the "melt in your mouth" hanger steak and their bread with molasses butter right now! Grace is highly recommended and I cannot wait to return!"

  • "Been saving Grace for a special occasion and finally had my chance on valentines day. Table for 2 with 530 reservations we had an excellent seat in the middle of the balcony and have a phenomenal view of the stained glass, the bar, and wine closets. Had really prompt service and drink/water refills from the busser. We received some bread with a molasses spread and a chefs version of a 7-up as a treat. Then we were served oysters as an appetizer and for dinner I had gnocchi and my guy had scallops and shared some potato fingerlings. I've been all over Portland and this is the first time I've felt like writing a review. The atmosphere was so intimate and romantic for such a grand dining room. It may be the most beautiful restaurant in town."

  • "We went to Grace for dinner in advance of attending the Portland Symphony. The kitchen got a little backed up with all the diners needing to be finished by 7:00, but we were served in plenty of time. The seating is spacious, the staff well trained, the food terrific, with a good selection of dishes. We will return often."

  • "We recently dined @ Grace to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday. It was absolutely perfect from the oysters to the banana cake. Sampled multiple appetizers and small plates. Highly recommend the roasted oysters and foie gras, and pretty much everything else on the menu. Sat upstairs with a beautiful view of the building and bar; and watched the kitchen put together their masterpieces."

  • "From the fig, maple, orange infused bourbon to the lovely dressing on the simple greens salad to the scrumptious duck confit ravioli to the luscious sea bass-- everything was delicious. Unfortunately, somehow our service got a little slow so we had to skip dessert to make a show. But we'll be back for more great food!"

  • "The food here was pretty delicious, but limited if you have vegetarians in your party. We had the 2 veg entrees on the menu, and one was plentifully portioned (maybe too much), while the other was a tad small. Regardless seasoning was fantastic, presentation beautiful. We ordered one cocktail, and as I am a fan of Fernet it was wonderful. Our only negative was an appetizer. We ordered the ravioli appetizer and the lemon sauce was just too lemony. If you had a bite with pistachio then it had more balance, but there was not enough pistachio in the ravioli filling to have in every bite. Still, the restaurant is gorgeous, and service fantastic."

  • "Went to Grace for 1 year anniversary. They were very open to helping me plan a special night. I called ahead and asked to put some champagne on the table which was waiting for us upon seating. Many employees congratulated us and when we ordered dessert they put a "Happy Anniversary" message on the plate. The food was great service was great overall a pleasant experience."
