A word from Gotham Bar and Grill
Since first opening its doors in 1984, Gotham Bar and Grill has epitomized New York City dining at its finest, serving Executive Chef Alfred Portale's sublime and refreshingly accessible Contemporary American Cuisine in a dining room that is consistently packed with sophisticated diners from all over the country and the world. One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped. Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006. Diner Reviews
  • "The host refused to accommodate my reservation request and I was compelled to sit at the bar. The manager was kind enough to buy me a glass of wine for my trouble. There was little sense that they had done something wrong. The host notified me that reservations for 1 simply couldn't be made (this, despite the fact that I had made one and he had it in his system). The food was poor, even by restaurant week standards. The halibut was a very sad piece of fish, terribly chewy and without flavor. The sauces and sides were tasty and well balanced though."

  • "We were not that happy with our original table and made a casual coment to the person seating us. That feedback went back to Jonathan (Manager) who immediately came over to our original table, listed to what we were looking for and re-seated us to a perfect table. That was amazing since most restaurants just don't care. Gotham vastly exceeded my expectations once again. Their food is phenomenal, service outstanding, loved it."

  • "Whenever I think about going to a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion Gotham comes to mind. But then again I really need no reason to go except that I want to experience a great dinner in a remarkable space. There can be inconsistencies such as an undercooked dish but one should not hesitate to speak up. When you do it's immediately taken care of. Special kudos to Joseph who does an amazing job."

  • "The superb food, the impeccable service and the serene setting makes this restaurant perfect for both business and personal dining. Add to that, if your party wants to linger over their dessert and coffee you will still feel welcome longer after most restaurants would be itching to show you the door. I love Gotham Bar and Grill."

  • "First thing I do when Restaurant Week rolls around is book lunch at Gotham. And it never disappoints. This time they brought back the chocolate cake on the rw menu. Thank you!!! I missed it last time. The service is so wonderful, you feel totally pampered, even if you're sticking to your budget."

  • "My partner and I have birthdays just one day apart. This year we decided to celebrate with dinner at Gotham. It was fabulous! The room of course is comfortable with a noise level that made conversation possible and still not feel like a monastic retreat. The food was beautifully prepared, at times revealing a delicate interplay of flavors and colors. We did order dessert. The restaurant was notified in advance this was a double birthday celebration, so when the plates arrived the kitchen had thoughtfully placed a candle in a small mound of whipped cream on each plate. Very nice. Thankfully, no one sang happy birthday."

  • "Expensive but worth it! A NY institution that lives up to its reputation. Went to for my wife's birthday and everything was perfect. Restaurant was crowded on a Thursday night but service was still attentive and noise level not intrusive. The food was superb."

  • "From our friendly greeting at the door to the warm, heartfelt, handshake goodbye, this was a great dining experience. Delilah, our waitress, was one of the best we've ever had! She could not have been more helpful, friendly, courteous, efficient, if she tried. She even brought the bottle of wine my friend loved (which she had recommended) over so my friend could take a photo of the label. We were there for lunch during restaurant week for the $25 prix fixed meal. The quality and presentation of the food were fantastic. With each bite all four us were saying how delicious it was and how much we enjoyed it. Don't expect to go away full, but definitely satisfied."

  • "A friend and I had lunch during restaurant week in New York, a special prix fixe menu for $25, an exceptional value. The food was very tasty and beautifully served, the ambiance comfortable and elegant, but the service a bit haughty. We both ordered the house cured salmon as an appetizer. It was lovely to look at, but without any small toasts or lemon, which are customary. When we asked if we could have toasts, the maître d'hôtel said "that's not how we serve it". I asked again, politely, to which he responded, "well, we'll do it for you", and walked away as if we were bothering him. My friend and I joked about it, but that is not what one would expect from an establishment that strives for excellence."

  • "1 square inch of fish (no matter how delicious) is not a lunch. 1 dab of lime fluff is not a dessert. I don't think I want to be a member of your club. However, the service was great."

  • "Charming maitre'D seated us immediately. Our drinks order was swift and efficient. Menus appeared promptly, orders taken and then our food was served after not too long a wait. A beautiful and efficient restaurant. Did I mention the great food? we will be back."

  • "pretty disappointed based on my experience during restaurant week. we arrived 3 minutes after reserved time and were told that our table would be ready soon (with no range of time expected to wait). after having to wait 20 min + , we finally asked if we can be seated at the bar. shame because we ended up not being able to enjoy out full meal ( a co worker ended up inhaling g his entree not being able to get to dessert) overall no major complaints about the food but definitely expected them to handle the volume/ traffic better during restaurant week as well as how the reservations were spaced out and food executed."

  • "While the food was outstanding, I felt service was lacking. Perhaps it was because we had a corner table, or perhaps it was because my husband and I look young, didn't order wine, and came for the Restaurant pre-fixe. While we noticed our waiter stop at other tables, no one came to check on us. We were ignored outside of the requisite bringing/clearing of plates. We weren't even initially given bread until a woman came over just as our appetizers were coming out to ask if we wanted "a second piece of bread." When she commented that she'd have to get us "another dish of butter," I commented that we never got any. She said nothing and walked away. Our waiter said he was going to check on a question my husband had. He never returned."

  • "Fine service and excellent food in a nice environment was a real lunchtime treat. This was my first time for lunch. Don't go if you're in a rush, but if you want a relaxing, nicely paced meal, this is the place."

  • "One of our party was unexpectedly stuck on a subway which had brake problems and the person was delayed. However the restaurant refused to seat the other two people and had a rather inconsiderate attitude. Not a pleasant experience!"

  • "Food was great, atmosphere was great service was great, it was just such a pleasant dining experience. It is not my first time and other times were great as well. I got the gazpacho, halibut and can't remember dessert, but I am a sovry person, and the 2 tings listed were fantastic. I recommend Gotham."

  • "Gotham Bar and Grill serves up unique dishes with first class ingredients and great farm to table type offerings. The service is attentive without being overbearing and the wine list/bar selection was impressive. The dessert menu was well worth it and had some delicious offerings. The only drawback is the tables are not just close together but you are on top of the next party. It was to the point that they mine as well just have one long table and seat you next to one another. It was not crowded when we were there but if you were in on a busy night it would be impossible to have a quiet conversation. The food however is well worth it and this should be part of any NY experience."

  • "We loved the food and ambiance at this wonderful restaurant that I have gone to over the years but on the last visit-July 22nd-the service felt very rushed. They were watching us and the minute we finished a course the waitress or another server swooped down and took away the plate and immediately brought the next course so by 12:40 we had dessert (40 minutes after we sat down.)This did not feel like relaxed dining . I told the waitress we felt rushed and she didn't even apologize. This was probably a result of it being restaurant week"

  • "What can you say about a Gotham that hasn't already been said. Thye food and service are still maintained at a high standard. Probably anybody who is anyone is the world of NYC food has passed through Alfred Potale's kitchen. Sure it's expensive and can be a tough ticket on certain nights but is it worth it? YES! Whether you are a high roller in spending a bundle on food and wine or just there for the prix fixe lunch, the service and welcoming attitude of the staff will keep you coming back. The kitchen continues to turn out amazing things, keeping it interesting while so many other trendy establishments have come and gone."

  • "Went for Restaurant Week for Lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The food was spectacular and the service was stellar. It is definitely a place that you should try for Restaurant Week, however be ready to pay nearly as much as you would for your meal for a glass of wine or a beverage. We ordered 2 ice teas and they were 5 dollars each. The food like I said though was amazing!"
