A word from Gotham Bar and Grill
Since first opening its doors in 1984, Gotham Bar and Grill has epitomized New York City dining at its finest, serving Executive Chef Alfred Portale's sublime and refreshingly accessible Contemporary American Cuisine in a dining room that is consistently packed with sophisticated diners from all over the country and the world. One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped. Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006. • "Food remains amazingly good. Don't know how they do it. Congrats."

  • "For a 70 plus lunch, I expect great service, decent portions and Gotham provided neither. I had to hail down my waiter for everything. The Prix Fixe Lunch was not a deal. The entree, was an over cooked 2X2 square of dry, sticky halibut. Try the appetizer beet salad instead. The gazpacho was excellent, the wine great. But the dessert were three tiny pellets the size of a tablespoon each. I ordered a second appetizer and then headed off to the bakers since I didn't feel full at all. The service was lackluster. Hanjan and Bar Boulud had better food and better deals. And for a advanced reservation, they sat me in a crowded, dark park of the restaurant."

  • "The service, from the moment you enter, was wonderful! The food Devine, the wine enchanting"

  • "Totally outstanding in every way. Food, service, wine list and, somehow it matters to say, value (enjoyment, satisfaction, ambiance) to price is always in the guest's favor. Please, if you know what 'GOOD' is, get yourself there! xxab"

  • "Gotham "Grill" & for some reason, they just couldn't get my entrée, Rack Of Lamb, cooked the way I like it, which was Med Rare. I don't believe I was being unreasonable or it was out of the ordinary requesting med rare. First, it arrived medium done. Ok, it happens, I was just a tad disappointed. Second time, it arrived like baaa baaa rare. Now, it's getting ridiculous & frustrating but still kept my cool and smile nicely to my server. My server's reaction to the rareness of the rack of lamb was pretty much the same as mine. Third time, the rack of lamb arrived & instead of giving me a new dish, they simply recooked the lamb. It was pretty bad & doneness was still off. Also, by that time, the accompaniments were flat/lukewarm."

  • "Knowledgeable wait staff; great food and service. Was pleased that they remembered when I mentioned it was a birthday celebration and they brought out a very nice dessert! They actually noted who was celebrating despite it being a large group and an off hand mention of who was celebrating."

  • "As a jaded New Yorker this remains on the top of my list of favorites. The food and service are great with a friendly staff. The ambience is outstanding with an upbeat feel."

  • "Never fails. Over twenty years the quintessential manhattan ding room for foodies!"

  • "All food that were served that day was very delicious. We were really blown away by the food and would love to come back."

  • "We were treated with the best table, the friendliest hosts, an excellent table (giving the ability to converse without shouting) and last but not least, delicious food (main course Portobello+). We were in no way treated like restaurant-week adventurers, which we were. I'll be back again shortly!"

  • "The perfect evening out in NYC! Everything was amazing. I am still thinking about how great the food was a week later! I had the Soft Shell Crab and my husband had the Duck with Foie Gras. The Foie Gras melted in your mouth and the duck was cooked to perfection. The service was perfect. Dishes were whisked away quickly but no one stood over us or made us feel uncomfortable. The decor and ambiance are well suited to celebrating a special occasion or romantic dinner but is also suitable for business groups etc. We definitely plan on returning to Gotham sooner rather than later."

  • "Gotham is an oasis of loveliness-- it was fitting that we concluded Restaurant Week here because it really was a grand finale. The food was, as usual, wonderful. Especially memorable was the gazpacho: complex and tasty. Summer in a bowl. The desserts are a standout as well: the Meyer lemon pudding cake and the chocolate cake-- warm and rich-- are not to be missed. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "We went there for restaurant week and while the restaurant was packed, the hostesses could have at least taken the time to smile or look friendly. Instead, we were greeted in a cold manner despite being perfectly on time. Nonetheless, the food was fantastic and their chocolate cake is one of the best I have ever had. Despite the poor service, I will definitely go back!"

  • "A gesamtkunstwerk! We were cosseted and made to feel welcome even though we came for the budget priced Restaurant Week menu. Not my first time but each time has been special."

  • "We chose this restaurant for it's great prix fix for lunch we had a cozy corner table to start. They have reasonable priced wines at lunch which is considerate so we enjoyed a bottle with our delicious and affordable fancy lunch."

  • "NYC RW2014 summer lunch. House cured Atlantic salmon with dill horseradish cream was very tasty. Liked ratatouille and Nova Scotia halibut. Meyer lemon pudding cake was ok. Service was great and ambience indicated class of this restaurant."

  • "It's hard to believe, but I have been going to this restaurant for 30 years. I can't believe that much time has elapsed, but the restaurant just seems to get better with age (like a fine wine, I suppose). I took my son here a few years ago when he was a freshman at NYU and we were on a mission to have lunch two or three times a month to catch up; since we were in NY, the rule was no restaurant twice. When I brought him the first time, he also fell in love with the place, and now it's almost ten years later, and it's our go-to place for dinner when we meet every three weeks or so to catch up."

  • "We enjoyed lunch at the Gotham Bar and Grill. A vibrant crowd at 1 pm and the glimplse of flowers in the courtyard add to the ambiance. The kale/quinoia salad was savory with reggio slices on top. The Halibut entree was sweet. The pasta dish or orecchiata and chicken sausage was not as plentiful in portion and was somewhat lacking in flavor. Both desserts, chocolate cake and meyer lemon pudding cake were excellent. Great job on the Aperol spritz apperitif! Thanks for an interesting lunch!"
    Dined on 8/12/2014
  • "TmThe quinoa and kale salad had nice ingredients but the dressing was a little overpowering. The halibut had a nice browned top but it was a little dry.The chocolate mouse cake with salted caramel ice cream was excellent."

  • "My husband were in town for a wedding from California and we decided to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary with a bang. Although we are not foodies, I love American food served with fresh ingredients. I started with the asparagus salad which had a wonderful tang to the dressing that was smoothed out by poached egg. I had the very best gazpacho of my life next. I didn't want to finish it because I didn't want the amazing blend of compressed yellow peppers, watermelon, cucumber, garlic, strawberry and tomato to end! I enjoyed the branzino as well which had the most lightly crusted skin with moist, inner layers cooked perfectly. My husband had the risotto and then the steak and he also concurred, the flavor was astonishing."

We will continue our tradition and come here until we aren't able!!!!! .....and never ever say no to the signature chocolate flour less cake....it is true bliss!"

  • "We've dined here over the years, and the quality of the entire experience has never diminished. The fundamental decor has never changed, so while on one level it can look tired, it really works. The chocolate cake is to die for!"

  • "My previous visit to this restaurant was probably 20 years ago. I was delightfully surprised at how little it has changed. The Restaurant Week menu had few choices, but they were carefully enough chosen not to be limiting. My main reason for choosing a restaurant is the food, and at the Gotham, it is superb. My 3 friends and I enjoyed 3 different main courses and 3 different desserts. We tried only 2 different appetizers; the kale and quinoa salad was a unanimous hit. The menu continues to be inventive, with combinations of ingredients that only a master chef would think to put together with such tasty results. The ambience and service enhanced the experience and gave the menu the respect it deserved."

  • "The food is wonderful, my group and I tried the cod, steak, and the soft shell crab all of which were absolutely delicious! Our server helped us not only gave excellent recommendations on food but also helped each of us select a cocktail or wine that would work well with our meals."
