A word from Gotham Bar and Grill
Since first opening its doors in 1984, Gotham Bar and Grill has epitomized New York City dining at its finest, serving Executive Chef Alfred Portale's sublime and refreshingly accessible Contemporary American Cuisine in a dining room that is consistently packed with sophisticated diners from all over the country and the world. One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped. Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006. • "FINE food , well service , nice price. my family love it"

  • "While the food was outstanding, I felt service was lacking. Perhaps it was because we had a corner table, or perhaps it was because my husband and I look young, didn't order wine, and came for the Restaurant pre-fixe. While we noticed our waiter stop at other tables, no one came to check on us. We were ignored outside of the requisite bringing/clearing of plates. We weren't even initially given bread until a woman came over just as our appetizers were coming out to ask if we wanted "a second piece of bread." When she commented that she'd have to get us "another dish of butter," I commented that we never got any. She said nothing and walked away. Our waiter said he was going to check on a question my husband had. He never returned."

  • "The Gotham B&G never disappoints. Whether it is during Restaurant Week or under normal times, the attention to the diner's satisfaction is ever present."

  • "Amazing food, ambiance and service!!! Loved the wine list as well!!!"

  • "Gotham Bar and Grill serves up unique dishes with first class ingredients and great farm to table type offerings. The service is attentive without being overbearing and the wine list/bar selection was impressive. The dessert menu was well worth it and had some delicious offerings. The only drawback is the tables are not just close together but you are on top of the next party. It was to the point that they mine as well just have one long table and seat you next to one another. It was not crowded when we were there but if you were in on a busy night it would be impossible to have a quiet conversation. The food however is well worth it and this should be part of any NY experience."

  • "The service was good. The appetizer was fine. I had a mushroom main course. The succotash side was very good. The mushroom was not to my taste. My dining companions enjoyed the halibut."
    Dined on 7/22/2014
  • "The chocolate cake is really good. I always order it. I ordered the halibut this time, really good."

  • "We loved the food and ambiance at this wonderful restaurant that I have gone to over the years but on the last visit-July 22nd-the service felt very rushed. They were watching us and the minute we finished a course the waitress or another server swooped down and took away the plate and immediately brought the next course so by 12:40 we had dessert (40 minutes after we sat down.)This did not feel like relaxed dining . I told the waitress we felt rushed and she didn't even apologize. This was probably a result of it being restaurant week"

  • "What can you say about a Gotham that hasn't already been said. Thye food and service are still maintained at a high standard. Probably anybody who is anyone is the world of NYC food has passed through Alfred Potale's kitchen. Sure it's expensive and can be a tough ticket on certain nights but is it worth it? YES! Whether you are a high roller in spending a bundle on food and wine or just there for the prix fixe lunch, the service and welcoming attitude of the staff will keep you coming back. The kitchen continues to turn out amazing things, keeping it interesting while so many other trendy establishments have come and gone."

  • "Went for Restaurant Week for Lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The food was spectacular and the service was stellar. It is definitely a place that you should try for Restaurant Week, however be ready to pay nearly as much as you would for your meal for a glass of wine or a beverage. We ordered 2 ice teas and they were 5 dollars each. The food like I said though was amazing!"

  • "The food here was very good, but for the price I really expected more... Maybe I am spoiled living in San Francisco, but I could have gotten a comparable meal at about 1/2 the price or a much better meal for the same price at several restaurants in SF. It was nice, food and atmosphere good, but I am not raving about it..."

  • "There are many "top 25 restaurants" in all sorts of lists that are largely compiled by tourists to this greatest city in the world. Gotham is one of the very best for us New Yorkers. Thank you Chef Portale for this gem and congratulations on Gotham's anniversary!"

  • "I went there for Restaurant Week. I ordered "Greenmarket Tomato Gazpacho" for appetizer, "Artisan Campanelle Pasta" for main course, "Gotham Chocolate Cake" for dessert. After tasted, the appetizer was just so so , the main course " Pasta" was very very salty, so I had to tell the waiter to change a new one, but still salty, just a little bit better. After finished the main dish, when we waited for the dessert, the waiter didn't clean the table for us and then just place the tableware. I saw any other tables all of the waiters will clean the table before place the tableware. so I had to remind to the waiter to do it. I am so disappointed !! Are you guys really a Michelin one star restaurant ? I don't think so."

  • "My husband and I finally got to visit Gothan Bar and Grill and had an absolutely fabulous lunch. We took advantage of NYC Restaurant Week and were able to partake in the 3 course lunch menu. The restaurant week menu was limited - 3 choices in each category: appetizer, entree, dessert, but I would venture to say that any choice would have been delicious. The service could have been better. The support waitstaff were excellent, however, our waiter was very much rough around the edges and didn't seem to fit with the rest of the staff. We would go back without a doubt."

  • "We've eaten at Gotham Bar and Grill previously during Restaurant Week and were generally pleased with what we got. This time, for some of the dishes the flavors seemed more subdued and the portions, never generous, seemed even smaller. As usual, ambience and service were good, but "the food's the thing," and this time it wasn't very exciting."

  • "This is my favorite restaurant in NY, and I consider myself a food enthusiast... whenever someone says something is good, I'll go out of my way to try it. Everything is done perfectly here, the ambiance, service, and the FOOD! Chef Alfred Portale is a master... go experience his work."

  • "Always a wonderful experience . . . our table at the front window was enjoyable but "squeezed" by the bar."
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "While the server for our table was excellent, we had to ask several times for more bread from the bread boy. Additionally, one entree was served lukewarm and there was no offer from management for a free drink or dessert to makeup for the fact that my dinner partner had almost completed his dinner when my entree came out of the microwave. This restaurant has lost its cache and superior dining experience for us. The prices are expensive for ordinary quality, including two mounds of mediocre sticky rice for $8.00. We will not be returning anytime soon."

  • "Service was impeccable. Dash, our waiter, did a wonderful job explaining the menu, giving his recommendations when asked (all right on the money, by the way), and being attentive without hovering. I liked that they offer you a taste of a wine by the glass before serving it to make sure it is acceptable. All of the other personnel were wonderful as well. We complemented the maitre d on the service on the way out. Food was excellent. Tuna Tartare, Sweetbreads, Rack of Lamb, and my spouse's fish were all out of this world (dessert too). Always have heard this is a great place. We are from out of town and definitely will go back. One of the best dining experiences we have had in quite a long time."

  • "Don't expect a bargain dinner, but if you're going to drop $100-$200 per person you can't do much better than Gotham. The only way to stay at the lower end of that range is not to have wine (and who wants to do that?). The food was spectacular, and the wait staff friendly and knowledgeable. Known as one of the City's best restaurants for a reason."

  • "Everything was absolutely perfect. Worth the price when your are rady to splurge For vegetarians the offerings are very slim but after consultation with the chef, they did accomodate our one vegetarian. There is a very very nice five course vegetarian meal but it doesnt make sense because everyone at the table has to order a five course meal for the vegetarian to be able to get it because otHerwise 'it makes the service hard to coordinate'. The restaurant either needs to make more veg choices or acoomodate by bringing out the veg flight in three tranches. The ice cream portions with the meal are only two bites. Too bad because it was so good."

  • "Even though we have not been here in years, during a recent visit to NYC, we scheduled a lunch. It was a great lunch; it was quiet, exclusive and the food and service were outstanding. It had not changed. Highly recommend GB&G!"

  • "Had lunch here with a friend this week. Our waiter introduced himself, then disappeared for 20 minutes. I had to ask another waiter to get him. He didn't check on us at all after he took our orders. He was going around the other tables talking & heard him tell a couple that he is told often that he looks like Ferris Bueller & that there was a precocious group of kids that came in & only ordered desserts. It was inappropriate to talk about other patrons out loud when he had other tables to attend to, & it took awhile to take our orders. Once we finished our lunch, he was nowhere to be found again, & we had to ask a busser to bring us our check. Food was so good, but the service, or lack thereof, ruined my dining experience."

  • "Since the mid-eighties my friends and I have frequently dined at Gotham Bar and Grill and never been disappointed. Always the most delicious meals, and several times I had birthday parties of 8 people to celebrate at this special American cuisine "temple." A some-what older friend (I am 79) would visit from San Francisco (a place of outstanding restaurants as well) and insist that we eat at Gotham for their signature Rack-of-Lamb dinner--that would always send her into rapture. Always a winner: no matter what one would select--and choices were not easy, as one really wanted to eat one of everything on the menu! Gourmands from Tel Aviv to Tokyo, not to mention Buffalo and Doha, Qataar, were delighted by entrees that were tasty."

  • "I love this restaurant. It's lovely inside, gorgeous view out to beautiful garden, high ceilings, has a wonderful spacious feel. Great food. On trend but not trendy, lovely to look at, of course, and delicious. Would recommend for anyone, anytime, business or pleasure. A longtime fave."

  • "A coworker introduced me to Gotham over 25 years ago when I was a newly trained cook and culinary school grad. After all of these years of trying new restaurants in NYC, Gotham is the restaurant I return to again and again for its consistency and innovation, excellent food and service. I love this restaurant!!"

  • "Every time I visit NYC one of my toughest decisions is deciding where to eat with all the amazing options. I chose Gotham for a dinner for a Group of 6 and wowed everyone. Every morsel of every food choice was amazing! We ended up with 6 different entrees and no one was disappointed. These included the soft shelled crab, NY steak, lamb, black cod, branzino, and pork chops. The beet salad and foie gras were awesome as well. The service was great as well."

  • "I thought it would be much better. I wanted my sons to experience something very unique, maybe I expected too much ... Food was good but not amazing. The kitchen must be very organized and efficient as our 3 courses came out very fast, a little too fast maybe. All in all it was a pleasant dining experience with a hint of let down."
