A word from Golden Ox
The Golden Ox is Kansas City's oldest steakhouse opened in 1949. The restaurant is a traditional steakhouse offering the finest aged and hand-cut steaks cooked over an open charcoal fire. We also offer great Kansas City style barbecue and a nice selection of seafood and other fare. We are located in the historic Stockyard District and the decorations include a number of photographs from the stockyard days. The restaurant has a distinctive western feel including a carpet containing branding iron and steer head designs and a 20 foot mural in the bar depicting an 1800's cattle drive. Wear your jeans and cowboy hat or business suit when you visit the Golden Ox, the real reason Kansas City is famous for steaks.Continued

  • "One of Kansas City's remaining true gems, step back in time and enjoy what it was like in the old "supper club" venues. The awesome original cowboy decor is a real treat. Excellent menu with traditional steal house favorites along with new and exciting meals are offered. "

  • "The host was very welcoming to us. The presentation of food was very nice and everyone was moving through the line at a good pace. The waiter was good. We arrived at 1pm and our table was ready. There was little shrimp available at the time we went through the line. The meat was a little tough; not at your usual standard. The only dessert available was the jello mix; it was very good. I did notice that more desserts were brought out later. I had a guest from California and she was pleased to experience this famous restaurant! All of the food was delicious. Thank you."

  • "My family has chosen Golden Ox for Thanksgiving and Easter for the last several years. The buffet is reliably good, with plenty of "comfort foods" available to satisfy everyone. There is always plenty of fresh, hot, food. Although they are very busy at these times, the service is excellent, the servers provide drinks and remove plates as if it were a regular meal service. We always go with an Open Table reservation and we get in with little or no waiting either on time or even a little bit before our reservation time."

  • "It's like stepping back I to time, my service, food and experience was great! Can't wait to return! Great for birthdays or out of town guest. The history of kc stock yards as you walk in!"

  • "We hadn't been there for a while, and chose Golden Ox because we wanted a steakhouse experience. Our seating was for 7:15 and they were on-time. Our server informed us they were out of the Porterhouse and Prime Rib and the famous carrot cake. What's up with that?"

  • "First time here for hubby and me. I ordered burnt ends and they were TOO burnt and very difficult to eat. The onions rings fell apart and I was left eating either onion or batter, but never both at same time, so I didn't finish them. Cole slaw was bland. Went with another couple (who had been here several times) for my hubby's and his friend's birthday. Despite the fact I was not impressed, the boys ordered steak and said they were very good, but this is my review, not theirs! The place is a little dated and could use a bit of an upgrade. Our server was very nice and did an excellent job. Very doubtful I'll go back. Wasn't impressed with the food, and not worth the cost and the drive to get there."

  • "It's always a fun and interesting trip to the Golden Ox. The Burnt Ends as an appetizer was terrific! No one in KC has burnt ends like this. Perhaps the best part of our meal. I had the ribeye, which was marginal. My wife had the filet and it was fantastic. The service, including the wine tasting experience, was quirky. Our waiter and wine expert were friendly and accommodating. The ambiance and atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in town. A fun night."

  • "My wife and I went there for valentine's day. We waited 10 minutes before we saw a waiter. The we asked do a wine list and he disappeared again for 5 minutes. Then they where out of the wine my wife order at 7:15. We then order a 35 dollar kc strip that had no flavor at all. The worst steak I have had at a steak restaurant."

  • "Took my old friend who just came to KC from Japan on the same night (his first US experience). He mentioned that this food changed his perception toward American beef steak. Perception=not much marbling meet makes very chewy, not tasty. Your prim rib was opposite=not much marbling, but very tender and tasty. Glad that I took him to your place."

  • "In the many years we have lived here it's the first time we've been. The menu has a really wide selection from BBQ to steaks. We were seated quickly and the waiter very polite. Unfortunately once we got our food we hardly saw him again. My wife had an issue with her meal as it wasn't exactly what she ordered. We finally gave up trying to find the waiter. She had ordered a blackened chicken pasta with Cajun cream sauce but the pasta were simply buttered. Definitely no Cajun cream sauce."

  • "Loved the food! The best steak I have had in a long time. The atmosphere could use some updating but overall a great experience and definitely would go back."

  • "I grew up on stories about the Golden Ox, so I was excited to finally go. I was extremely disappointed in my food, filet mignon, and service. I was asking the hostess to refill my water & soda. To say the least, I won't be returnin"

  • "I ordered KC Strip which was tough. Wife ordered Prime Rib which was also tough. Her baked potato was lukewarm, I had to wait for my potato after steaks were delivered. They were out of White Zin wine which my wife ordered. When bill came we were charged for the wine she didn't get. Had to wait for ticket to be changed."

  • "$80 for 2 people. The steak was a poor cut and poorly cooked, the salad was from a bag and tasted like it. The loaded baked potato was very good. Silverware wasn't polished, chair wasn't clean. I expect more for $80. Chain steak joints have better food for half the cost. Very disappointed."

  • "I took my girlfriend to the Golden Ox for Valentine's day. Neither of us had been there before and we were both impressed. We had a reservation and the table was ready on time even though the restaurant was very busy. The service was excellent and the prime rib would melt in your mouth, we will definitely go back again."

  • "We went to the Golden Ox and didn't know what to expect, but it turned out to be a memorable experience for sure. The staff was excellent and the food was so delicious. I've eaten at several steak restaurants, but you will walk away remembering your meal at the Golden Ox."

  • "We ordered 3 prine ribs and a KC Strip. The prime rib was tough and had difficult cutting between meat and fat because of gristle. The KC strip was not only cold but tough as well. No patrons except fo one couple. We ordered wine. They were out of what we ordered and it was delivered late. Salad was very small and not very imagitive. The inside is great. But if food is bad and expensive, this we can get anywhere. I am very disappointed and brought people from Finland to show off KC as best steak in America. Wrong."

  • "I haven't been there for years, but was glad I went in Saturday night. Wine list is rather limited, but I was very pleased with what I had. Presentation leaves a lot to be desired, but quality of the food makes up for it. I had a KC strip that was just spectacular. Ambience may be lacking, but food makes up for it."

  • "First time and last time eating at the Golden Ox last week. Overall, it was between fair to average. Interior is dingy and really showing its age. Service was hit or miss. Their Ceasar salad was very good. I had their signature ribeye and while tasty and cooked well, it was almost 1/4 unedible gristle. Loaded baked potato tasted like the bacon bits came out of a jar. I expected so much more food and service-wise for those high prices ($36.50 for the 'signature' ribeye). There are much better places in KC to have a high-end steak experience with outstanding food and service (Capitol Grille, etc.) The Golden Ox is not it."

  • "While the food was excellent the time it took for us to have lunch was disappointing. I expected a restaurant serving business people during the work week to be faster. Next time a lunch is planned here, I will block off two hours."

  • "I booked the Golden Ox for new years eve...What a great choice! We were seated when we arrived by a very busy but in control host....Our waiter was very attentive..He brought our drinks as soon as we ordered....Our appetizer, salads and steaks were delivered at just the right times....When we left the entire staff said thank you, and they meant it.....Nice.....The steaks are fantastic!"

  • "We actual got there 20 mins before our reservation, which was no biggie. They said we could wait in the bar and have a drink but we never got waited on. My husband and I shared a 20 oz steak any half of it was grisle."

  • "Had guests in town and could not find a place for barbecue on night after Thanksgiving. Used Open Table to locate a spot near Union Station and luckily found Golden Ox. Had not been here for years. Not much has changed in the decorum. Got right in and found a surprising amount of barbecue choices on the menu for our guests. And they were good. Had the prime rib myself which was fantastic. Wife had the chicken. Why do you order chicken at a steak house? She was disappointed. This is a classic KC location that should not be forgotten. The staff is friendly, and attentive."

  • "We love Golden Ox anyway, but we've been going for holidays recently & love it. We went again this year & only had to wait about 5 min. for our table..We'd made reservations, but still - there were LOTS of people. Our waiter was personable, happy, & came around just enough. The food was well presented w/many choices. My companion had traditional fare & was delighted with the variety & quality. I had salmon, as I don't eat red meat. It was very good & the servings were just right, even though I knew I could go back for more. We had a bottle of wine, and never felt rushed, even with the crowd. Golden Ox has these feasts well choreographed to accommodate lots of diners gracefully. A lovely Thanksgiving dinner for us who choose not to cook!"

  • "Restaurant has long had a reputation for excellence - their own menu says "We are the reason Kansas City is famous for steak". I ordered the signature ribeye and was extremely disappointed. My steak was not hot, it was fatty, even for a ribeye, and the flavor was bland, at best. Others in our group ordered bbq and were equally disappointed. Our server, on the other hand, was engaged, friendly, and accomodating. It was the worst $40 steak I've ever had and have had better at a chain restaurant. I travel frequently to Kansas City and had always heard the Golden Ox was the standard. I now know otherwise and will not return."

  • "This has to be the original steakhouse -- it is IN what used to be the stockyards. Very clubby atmosphere (I am sure it has not changed in years!). Steaks prepared right where you can see them, and they also have seafood etc for others. A really good experience."
    Dined on 11/15/2013
  • "You cannot do better if you're looking for non-vegetarian options. The original location on Gennessee is the best if you enjoy history and a genuine "cowboy" atmosphere. These wonderful, original restaurants are disappearing quickly. Don't miss your chance to experience this one!!!!!"

  • "We eat here 1-2 year when in town for cattle events at Kemper Arena. Some might consider it dated, we consider it memories of time past. We love the stock yard photos and that the decor never changes. Its like an old friend to us. To have dinner for two with drinks / dessert is easy $100 - but we love it and hope this gem stays right where it is - preserving the days of the stockyard in KC. The prime rib was perfect. I was disappointed that my favorite broiled tomato had been removed from the menu and the bread is nothing special. I do not care for the basket of crackers (individually wrapped) that is placed on the table - and they have no ginger ale - isn't that a bar staple? The wait staff is SUPERB"

  • "Really liked the ambience of the Golden Ox. Such a historic treasure right by Kemper Arena. The story of the old stockyards is told throughout the restaurant. Service was great and so was the food. Great for a group."

  • "My party of four ventured to Golden Ox for a delicious steak and a taste of Kansas City. We went away extremely disappointed. None of our steaks were prepared properly and the cuts of meat seemed inferior. A table of four next to us had the same experience. I dine out often in Kansas city and have never had such a poor experience. The building and decor are outdated and old, but we might have found it quaint if the food had equalled our expectations. I hate to imagine what out-of-towners would say."
