A word from Golden Ox
The Golden Ox is Kansas City's oldest steakhouse opened in 1949. The restaurant is a traditional steakhouse offering the finest aged and hand-cut steaks cooked over an open charcoal fire. We also offer great Kansas City style barbecue and a nice selection of seafood and other fare. We are located
…
in the historic Stockyard District and the decorations include a number of photographs from the stockyard days. The restaurant has a distinctive western feel including a carpet containing branding iron and steer head designs and a 20 foot mural in the bar depicting an 1800's cattle drive. Wear your jeans and cowboy hat or business suit when you visit the Golden Ox, the real reason Kansas City is famous for steaks.

Golden Ox is an old restaurant in Kansas City. Emphasis should be placed on OLD. It smells old and stale upon entering. The atmosphere is dark and dingey. The food even seemed tired---no creativity, poor presentation. It may be a great choice for a Friday night steak but was a bad decision for Easter Brunch.

We arrive and were immediately sitted. The waiter explained that he was new and in training. We initially wondered when it took 30 minutes for the salads to arrive. But after that everything was excellent. The water, tea glasses and coffee cups were never empty and we had a birthday girl. They did a great job waiting patiently for her to come back to the table. The cake was lite and we all sang Happy Birthday. They divided the cake for our guests and left the remaining cake with the honorees name still legiable so that she could enjoy it at home. The steaks were cooked as requested even though they were huge. Many members had to have boxes for take homes. The wood work is still dark, but you go for the steaks.

Steak was underseasoned. Needed a little salt before cooking. Loved the atmosphere of an old school steakhouse. Upscale cowboy feel.

When I was a kid growing up on a farm in Kansas, we'd always do a dinner at the Golden Ox when we were in town for the old Big 8 basketball tourneys. I'd not been back since probably the late 70`s or early 80`s... and it was quite a wave of nostalgia to walk back thru those doors once again. The pictures on the walls were the same, the tables and booths were the same - I kept thinking I'd see my Dad walk around one of the corners at any moment ! But best of all, the FOOD was still the same high-quality, well-cooked steak I remembered from so long ago. While the floors may be showing a little wear, the way these folks do a steak is still well worthwhile.

The best way I can describe Golden Ox is tired. It has been around for years and it feels like it. Everything from the decor (wood paneling, pictures of cows, and pictures of the nearby stockyards) - which I don't mind, to the servers who just looked exhausted while wearing polos and jeans. Did restaurant week there, and instead of trying to wow us and get later business, golden ox seem to take the approach of trying to maximize profit. Salad was ok, Steak was well cooked, but bland, and the creme brule desert ended up being pudding in a bowl with sugar poured on top with three maraschino cherries thrown on for good measure. Creme brule isn't one of their normal deserts, why would they offer it during restaurant week? I was dissappointed

The Golden Ox is what a Kansas City Steak House is supposed to be. No pretentious Food Network inspired food, just honest to goodness steaks and comfort sides. Would recommend for anyone that wants to feel the old Kansas City and enjoy a finely prepared steak.

The Golden Ox is a Kansas City classic. The staff was so friendly and especially accommodating to our son who has food allergies. We would definitely recommend for both couples and families.

Overall a poor experience from start to finish. New Year's Eve at 6pm and not busy. The highlight of the meal was the combo platter appetizer which was good. As for the dinner and service it was poor. The dinner salads were little more than lettuce and dressing. The prime rib was overcooked and lacked flavor. The filet was ordered medium rare and was served well done. The server was friendly but lacked professionalism. We asked to speak with a manager and was approached by a young man in a polo shirt who offered no apology. For entree's priced in the $30+ range we expected a lot more and left disappointed.
