A word from Glen Ellen Star
About Us

Established in 2012, Glen Ellen Star is the culmination of a decade-long dream by Chef Ari Weiswasser and his wife Erinn Benziger-Weiswasser. Resembling a quaint farmhouse while invoking a rural and rustic feeling of California wine country, Glen Ellen Star is a taste of both local and international flavors. It is the Weiswassers’ mission to create an inviting, neighborhood-friendly restaurant that consistently exceeds expectations. Ari has worked at New York’s Restaurant Daniel, Picholine, and Paul Liebrandt’s Corton, where he served as Chef de Cuisine. He also had a long stint at The French Laundry in Yountville, CA.

First visit to Glen Ellen Star was a delight. Service was very friendly and efficient. The green salad I had was very simple and very, very fresh. My entree, Brick Chicken, was elegantly simple, moist and tasty. Dessert, an Apple Crumble served a la mode with their home made ice cream, was spectacular and could easily serve 3 or 4. Must go back.

This was our second visit to the Glen Ellen Star and we enjoyed it just as much as we did one year ago. We sat at the Chef's table and enjoyed talking with the chef and staff while they prepared the nightly courses. The brick chicken and cream corn is fabulous. In fact, we enjoyed our dinner so much we returned the next evening for the pizza. Service was outstanding, the ambiance great and the food is excellent.

This is my third time at Glen Star and it just keeps me wanting to come back more. The food is so well done and imaginative, the mix of flavors and choices is amazing. What Ari brought from the French Laundry is incredible but the price of his fabulous meals are so reasonable. A must meal when in Sonoma County.

The Glen Ellen Star is all about the food. Everything we ordered was perfect. The roasted vegetables are a vegetarians dream, except for the bacon on the Brussels Sprouts, which was my favorite. the Beets came in a close second. We brought our own wine a Sunce Trois Amis which paired perfectly with the roasted duck breast. It was a perfect pairing especially when you had a touch of the huckleberry sauce and polenta. I tried the wife's chicken with creamed corn and figs and it was great too. Don't know if they make a bad dish. The service was great. Attentive without being in your face all the time. Finished with the Apple Crisp and Nutella Ice Cream. Awesome! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a special meal fora special occasion.

The lamb Ragu was a unique, satisfying entree with a wonderful blend of tastes and textures served piping hot. Don't miss the brussel sprouts, this side dish may not be the healthiest way to get your veggies, but totally worth it. The service was excellent and if you sit at the bar, you have a bird's eye view of the cooking. Very small, so make a reservation.

… our initial feeling has strengthened: if this is not the best restaurant in the Glen Ellen-Sonoma region, it is definitely in contention. The food is a bit unorthodox, in that emphasis is put on vegetable side dishes. And for good reason: these are culinary triumphs. And no mistake, the entrees are equally as thrilling. We've yet to try the pizzas, but they appear like knockouts, and very popular. And people, it's Glen Ellen: that charming, artsy funkiness translates to having a waitstaff as congenial, humorous, smart and down-to-earth as can be imagined. Don't tell anyone, but when I'm here? I'm tempted to pack in the Sonoma place and move down the street...

I have returned to Glen Ellen Star often, because I live in Glen Ellen, and it's always a delicious and enjoyable evening. It may not be for everyone--the menu is somewhat eclectic and limited to mostly wood-fired foods--but they are awesome. It is a great place to go with a friend to enjoy a bottle of wine and a series of delicious small plates. The artichokes are to die for! The outdoor patio on a summer evening is delightful.

Back to "The Star" for our last meal of this year's stay in wine country. This small establishment, with its tiny kitchen, turns out more well-conceived, excellently-executed dishes than most larger, fancier and more expensive restaurants. Although the pizzas are tasty, be certain to order veggies. This kitchen's way with great local produce is truly exceptional. We also were blown away by a whole sea bass special, cooked to perfection and perfumed with herbs and Meyer lemon. Finally, the house made ice creams are excellent; try over one of their fruit crisps. One of the wine country's best.

Walking into the restaurant, the smoke from the wood-fired grill makes you instantaneously hungry. The food is very flavforful and well-prepared. The beer selection is local (for the most part) and pretty solid but not spectacular. Wish we had left some room to try dessert.

You wouldn't go to the Star for the ambiance. Inside the restaurant, the ambiance is more like a very clean diner, small and a little crowded. But, after tasting this food the ambiance doesn't matter. There were three of us, and we each ordered a separate vegetable dish which we all shared. One could easily make a meal on these wonderfully prepared delights. We also shared a white pizza, and a baked whole fish. My wife said that this was the best meal that she has ever had, and we eat out often. Our waitress and the service was excellent. There is a enclosed, outside, screened patio that looked very nice for warm evening dining. We will very definitely be going back to the Glen Ellen Star

I have dairy allergies, so I end up learning more about where I eat. Very few things are made ahead here at Glen Ellen Star, so it is easy for them to accommodate issues. They were great about making sure my dishes did not have dairy, in a professional low-key way. We loved the wood-fired oven vegetable dishes (extra yum for the brussels with bacon-brown sugar marmalade). My duck disk was great, served over their modern version of cassoulet, with the fresher, crisp romano and wax beans adding crunch, and some nice contrasting acidity in the sauce. My husband was not so impressed with his chicken dish--good, but not memorable, and his fruit crisp was a bit too sweet. But overall, quite good. We would definitely go again.

If you're visiting the Sonoma/Napa wine regions anytime soon, you need to search out this fine restaurant in Sonoma county. We have been here 3 times and everything we have tried has been great. Very nice folks and great service will be your first clue to as to what's to come. The menu is not broad, but what's there will sure to please just about anyone. The place is immaculately clean and the kitchen is one of the most efficient I've ever seen, based on it's really small working space. As you might expect, the wine list is quite good, but reasonably priced. They also offer some great local beers. This place is not to be missed for a great meal, at what I would consider to be a very fair price for what you get in return.

On our wine country travels, we try many different restaurants, but keep coming back here. This is a small restaurant, so plan ahead. The outside dining area, when available, is probably enjoyable year-round, but we've eaten inside, too, and been perfectly happy. As often in wine country, the staff are seriously into food and make a real effort to provide you with a great experience. Everything comes out of the wood-burning oven: the pizzas, the brick chicken (skin so tasty, even we low-fat dieters have to eat some), the pasta dishes and the vegetables. PLEASE try the veggies! They're great. And, if you eat them, you can have some of the house-made ice creams; this visit, the vanilla maple bourbon on a fresh fruit crisp was a hit.

Oh, third visit, and not a good one, boo. Sat outside, do not do if you don't like flies. Gazpacho was flavorful but needed chunk, blended smooth is not for that dish. Entrees: whole Dorade was the fly bait. Served on red sauce, it was strong and the pairing was not good. Nothing else on the plate. The brick chicken, always my favorite, served on creamed corn, but surrounde by figs? Also not a good pairing. Chicken itself lacked seasoning. Just OK but used to be great. They only have ice cream for dessert, they need to improve on that as not everyone likes ice cream. We hurried through as we could not take the flies. It's hard to cut chicken while you're waving off insects. We loved this place on past visits but this may have turned us. :(

If you like to sweat profusely while eating out be my guest. The wood oven overpowers what little air conditioning there is in this restaurant. Add an open front door to the mix and you've created a haven for every fly within 20 miles. My advice to the chef/owner would be to install a new a/c system and some high powered fans. That would at least keep air moving and the flies from settling on the food and patrons. It was actually hotter in the restaurant that it was outdoors. That being said, the food is good, inventive, and well presented. The wood grilled octopus was a little chewy but had great flavor. My husband had the brick chicken and it was great. Veggies are the restaurants signature--all cooked in the wood oven.

Had a 5:30 reservation and were first to be seated. Received menus, were told of specials and received water. Our waitress spent a long time on the menu at the next table and praising their baby. Finally, we got to order: wine, bread and salad to be served together, vegetables and crab. Wine and bread came but not salad. Were told "you'll get the salad when the kitchen prepares it." Salad finally came, then then the vegetables. Waited for entrees; when we asked about them were told they usually serve food "by course." That wasn't the case with anyone else in the restaurant. The diners with the baby left; we finally got our crabs. Got an apology for the slow service and a sack with a couple of complementary ice creams.
