A word from Glen Ellen Star
About Us

Established in 2012, Glen Ellen Star is the culmination of a decade-long dream by Chef Ari Weiswasser and his wife Erinn Benziger-Weiswasser. Resembling a quaint farmhouse while invoking a rural and rustic feeling of California wine country, Glen Ellen Star is a taste of both local and international flavors. It is the Weiswassers’ mission to create an inviting, neighborhood-friendly restaurant that consistently exceeds expectations. Ari has worked at New York’s Restaurant Daniel, Picholine, and Paul Liebrandt’s Corton, where he served as Chef de Cuisine. He also had a long stint at The French Laundry in Yountville, CA.Continued

  • "Creative and delicious food. Polite and attentive service. A wonderful place for a date night. Noise level was a little loud, but other than that, we had a wonderful experience!"

  • "The quality of the food was awesome - half of us had a most delicious fish of the day. The atmosphere was more casual than I had expected but it was upbeat and energized - topped off with a casual presentation of such elegantly prepared food it was a treasured experience. We will be back"

  • "Had a 5:30 reservation and were first to be seated. Received menus, were told of specials and received water. Our waitress spent a long time on the menu at the next table and praising their baby. Finally, we got to order: wine, bread and salad to be served together, vegetables and crab. Wine and bread came but not salad. Were told "you'll get the salad when the kitchen prepares it." Salad finally came, then then the vegetables. Waited for entrees; when we asked about them were told they usually serve food "by course." That wasn't the case with anyone else in the restaurant. The diners with the baby left; we finally got our crabs. Got an apology for the slow service and a sack with a couple of complementary ice creams."

  • "Simply a wonderful place. My wife and I eat out frequently, and the food at Glen Ellen Star was one of the best experiences of our restaurant lives. It was so good, we are going back again on this trip even though we are here only four days. What a gem."

  • "Great place to eat while in Glen Ellen. Very small, tables too close and eat inside because of the flies. Otherwise, the service was good and the food was done just beautifully. Their ice cream is homemade, but you can definitely share one, especially after eating dinner. Brussel sprouts were out of this world!!! Would go back again and again~"

  • "Spectacular, intelligent food localed grown and a cozy space. You can't go wrong. I just wish I lived closer so I could go more often."

  • "The service was wonderfully friendly and responsive. The food was delicious, and the dining room appealing. However, there were a few notable flaws for a restaurant in this price range. For instance, we found bits of cartilage in the lamb sugo; the homemade ice cream was really too sweet, and it left a coating of butter on our spoons (maybe it was over-processed); and there were flies that plagued us throughout the meal, landing on us and our food. The best dish was roasted Brussels sprouts with diced bacon; although slightly burnt, it was very flavorful."

  • "We had a fantastic meal at Glen Ellen Star. The restaurant and the menu are very casual but the cooking is anything but that. We had multiple vegetable dishes that were interesting, memorable and yummy. The duck special was delicious and the gezpacho was refreshing. Would come back in heartbeat."

  • "Incredible comfort food! Restaurant is very tiny and loud but you MUST eat here when visiting Sonoma!"

  • "This was one of the best meals I've ever had. The food combinations were incredible. Everything was cooked perfectly. We sat at the bar and could see the chefs cooking. The chefs were nice and talkative. Our server wasn't the greatest, but honestly the food was so dang good, it didn't matter."

  • "I am very happy the Glen Ellen Star is thriving. We go twice a month and enjoy the atmosphere and food.Sometimes it's hard to get a reservation or even add to the reservation because the place is small."

  • "Made reservations well in advance and when we arrived on a HOT evening, we weren't given the choice of sitting inside the air-conditioned restaurant, rather we were assigned an outdoor table on the road, which quickly was besieged by flies and wasps who joined us for dinner. So lesson learned, when reserving, specify you want to sit INSIDE the restaurant. Very limited menu options. Entrees vary in quality, steak good, fish dry. The sprouts get lots of press, but don't live up to the hype. However the grilled corn was quite good. Blueberry crisp, a new dessert item ,was simply heated up blueberries in a syrup sprinkled with a ginger snap cookie for $12.00! The management was gracious and comped us dessert, given our experience."

  • "Love this place. Imaginative menu - attentive but casual service - quaint atmophere. The roasted veggies could make me become a vegitarian but the meats tempt too much. Ever changing wine list makes for a new adventure focused on local wines."

  • "We have to visit this restaurant on every trip to Sonoma. The food preparations are unique, and consistently amazing. Great Brussels sprouts. Corn , and wood fired pizzas. Also, the best home made peanut butter ice cream you have ever tasted! Food and service never disappoint in this smalll and quaint gem."

  • "While visiting, we enjoyed a nice meal here. Excellent vegetables from the wood oven. Pasta and chicken dishes both disappeared from our plates. Home made malted chocolate ice cream was memorable in all good ways."

  • "This place really hit the spot. The food is unique and delicious. Service was impeccable. We loved it."

  • "We were told about the GE Star by a winemaker pouring some wine for us and decided to try it. It's small, so tough to get in but absolutely worth the wait. They use a wood fired oven to cook just about everything. The veggies and pizza are "don't miss" items. We also tried the brick chicken (or something like that) which was terrific. If you're anywhere in the area, don't miss this gem."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at the Glen Ellen Star and everything was perfect! The staff joined in the celebration and really made our evening very special. All of the food is fresh made and flavorful. We ate here two years ago and it was good then as well. We had delicious champagne to toast the night and finished with a late harvest Riesling that was out of this world. Hubby had Chilean Sea Bass and I ordered a handmade pasta with carrot butter and fresh English Peas. Yum! Dessert was a sumptuous berry cobbler and home made ice cream. The evening was wonderfully memorable."

  • "Had to bring my foodie friend from the Peninsula to the Star to share my enthusiasm. Of course, the dishes were as marvelous as my previous visits. The corn alone, will keep me coming back! Ahhh... and the chicken. She loved it as well!"

  • "We all had an exceptional time here. The food was wonderful! Had the calamari and vegatable dishes for the first course. The whole Dorade was exceptional! We highly recommend this restaurant in every way!"

  • "We love GE Star - Great food, great service and fun atmosphere. The brussels sprouts and corn were exceptionally delicious this time!"

  • "The restaurant has wonderful, innovative food, particularly its emphasis on multiple and interesting vegetarian dishes. A vegetarian friend appreciates the opportunity to enjoy a dinner with more options than at most restaurants, yet options for non-vegetarians are many and also very inventive - ultra-fresh and satisfying. The staff is competent & friendly. Our only complaint when eating inside vs outside is the extremely high noise level, almost painful at times & it was impossible to converse except by shouting. If you want to be able to have a conversation or avoid hearing intimate details from the next table, ask for a table outside."

  • "The owners have done a terrific job renovating what looks to be an old store in the charming hamlet of Glen Ellen. However, the dining experience didn't live up to the locale. We were expecting something terrific, given the reviews on Yelp. First up, the roasted veggies. The corn w/queso was so salty we complained. High marks that it was swept away and replacement was good but not great. The (6) brussels sprouts themselves were exemplary, first-rate, but the sweet topping of bacon, smothering. The calamari, the best dish of the evening, but again, serving too small. Then the entree, a chicken breast in sauce Veracruz, which turned out to be chopped tomatoes, etc. OVERPOWERED by an unpleasant, unidentified herb. Ice cream good. **"

  • "Great roasted vegetables...especially the brussel sprouts! Only tried the organic chicken, but noteworthy. Very attentive waitstaff...given the fact that I'm highly allergic to nuts. They took my requests very seriously. Fresh and unpretentious place. Small menu but thoughtfully chosen. Would totally recommend it to many and already have! Actually had an order to go of the brussel sprouts the next night, as I was leaving town to go home from my little getaway!"

  • "We are locals, enjoy Star for a special night out, fun with friends. Menu items unique, delicious bordering on decadent, beautifully presented. Two of us shared 3 items. We were stuffed and took the yummy homemade ice cream home for the next night. Save salad for elsewhere. Always interesting tourist diners to chat with from everywhere. Hostess very helpful with the reservation. Don't miss a chance to sit at the bar to dine and chat with the Chefs. Great opportunity for gourmet and useful cooking tips. Outdoor patio is great. Service excellent! You will likely never order Flat Iron Steak elsewhere after this, nor will you want brussels sprouts without Star's brown sugar and bacon! And and and..."

  • "Pluses: Special dinner. Excellent service. Food was above average. Flatiron steak yummy. Paired wines perfect. Filtered water tasty. Minuses: Limited menu. Don't bother with salad. Might be great with a group. I would return. "

  • "Great atmosphere and service. Any Foodie will be pleased. Very personable staff which is a direct reflection of the owner, Ari."

  • "The menu was a bit confusing as it started with vegetables, then starters. However, the food made up for any confusion. The white pizza with guanciale and arugula was outstanding. The mozzarella was creamy and delicious. The dessert menu basically consisted of ice cream--which was fabulous--but my advice would be to split an order. For just picking a wine country restaurant at random, we were more than satisfied with our dinner."

  • "The main courses- fish, chicken and lamb ragu were very good, and the oven baked vegetables were excellent and unusual. We were disappointed in the rock octopus- it seemed to be overcooked (never tried it before so I'm uncertain if this was the problem) and we felt it was very expensive for what we got. Very limited dessert menu. We had homemade ice cream and were unimpressed. "

  • "What's the point of Opentable and a reservation if you have to wait 15 minutes for your table? Not a plus when you see staff give away your table to walk-ups. Food excellent as usual, but service was non-existent and slow throughout our stay. By far our worst experience since their opening... and we're locals who dine quite frequently. "

  • "The menu was unusual and really a delight. Just ordering the pizza was exquisite... and we're not even talking about the vanilla maple bourbon ice cream in pint containers."

  • "Three of us (two locals and a guest) had reservations for 7:30 PM. At first the noise level was very high but once those with earlier reservations had finished and left the noise level dropped considerably. Our waiter, Tom, was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed every dish we ordered: two simple salads and a spring pea soup; the roast Brussels sprouts with brown sugar & bacon marmalade, and the roasted sugar snap peas with feta cheese as appetizers; lamb ragu, brick chicken, and the whole roasted dourade. Dessert was shared homemade ice cream and the strawberry crumble. Even the decaf coffee was delicious. I had some concerns because earlier reviews (2012) were mixed. No more--everything was great!"

  • "Limited and expensive wine selections. They charged us $2.00 EXTRA for Parmesan cheese which was badly needed on a totally uninspired pasta sauce. The cherry crumble dessert consisted of cherries, SUGAR and very little crumble. We had requested a 7 pm reservation but were told that only an hour earlier table was available, then we (and others - we noticed) were clearly being rushed. "

  • "This restaurant was recommended to me as a special place for my husband and I -- something out of the city and perfect for a grown-up, no kids dinner, and it did not disappoint. The food was perfect and service great. We'll definitely return!"

  • "We were lucky enough to be staying nearby at the lovely Tanglewood House and were looking for something in the area. The menu looked great. What a treat we received. Everything was absolutely fresh and seasonal and prepared simply and deliciously. We're both from NYC so we get good foo a lot, but this was the best meal we've had in months. Don't skip the wood-fired veg. Great service, memorable meal, great night."

  • "We just returned from a week in Sonoma and dined at Glen Ellen Star twice. The good is locally sourced and delicious! Enjoyed eating inside over the patio, though with a group the patio may be the way to go. "
