About Us

Established in 2012, Glen Ellen Star is the culmination of a decade-long dream by Chef Ari Weiswasser and his wife Erinn Benziger-Weiswasser. Resembling a quaint farmhouse while invoking a rural and rustic feeling of California wine country, Glen Ellen Star is a taste of both local and international flavors. It is the Weiswassers’ mission to create an inviting, neighborhood-friendly restaurant that consistently exceeds expectations. Ari has worked at New York’s Restaurant Daniel, Picholine, and Paul Liebrandt’s Corton, where he served as Chef de Cuisine. He also had a long stint at The French Laundry in Yountville, CA.

Innovative cooking of common dishes (like beets, cauliflower, etc.) turns them into mouth-watering gems. Small menu but all dishes are delicious. Almost all entries cooked in an open-hearth oven. Small restaurant, but outside, covered patio add considerable additional seating.

If you're visiting the Sonoma/Napa wine regions anytime soon, you need to search out this fine restaurant in Sonoma county. We have been here 3 times and everything we have tried has been great. Very nice folks and great service will be your first clue to as to what's to come. The menu is not broad, but what's there will sure to please just about anyone. The place is immaculately clean and the kitchen is one of the most efficient I've ever seen, based on it's really small working space. As you might expect, the wine list is quite good, but reasonably priced. They also offer some great local beers. This place is not to be missed for a great meal, at what I would consider to be a very fair price for what you get in return.

On our wine country travels, we try many different restaurants, but keep coming back here. This is a small restaurant, so plan ahead. The outside dining area, when available, is probably enjoyable year-round, but we've eaten inside, too, and been perfectly happy. As often in wine country, the staff are seriously into food and make a real effort to provide you with a great experience. Everything comes out of the wood-burning oven: the pizzas, the brick chicken (skin so tasty, even we low-fat dieters have to eat some), the pasta dishes and the vegetables. PLEASE try the veggies! They're great. And, if you eat them, you can have some of the house-made ice creams; this visit, the vanilla maple bourbon on a fresh fruit crisp was a hit.

Chef/Owner Ari Weiswasser has worked at New York’s Restaurant Daniel = our favorite), Picholine, and Paul Liebrandt’s Corton, where he served as Chef de Cuisine. He also had a long stint at The French Laundry! The following items came straight out of the wood oven. The first being the brussel sprouts with brown sugar bacon marmalade - with tons of BACON ! ($10.50) this was Soooo Good, that even my wife (who dislikes brussel sprouts) had 4 or 5 of them ! We also had the fantastic padron peppers with a shabazi spice ($10.50) and the over the top heirloom baby carrots, oaxacan mole & sesame brittle ($10.50). The Pizza (special) was Outrageous . . . a cauliflower creme fraiche base with German potatoes, Boletus mushrooms and Arugula ($17)

Oh, third visit, and not a good one, boo. Sat outside, do not do if you don't like flies. Gazpacho was flavorful but needed chunk, blended smooth is not for that dish. Entrees: whole Dorade was the fly bait. Served on red sauce, it was strong and the pairing was not good. Nothing else on the plate. The brick chicken, always my favorite, served on creamed corn, but surrounde by figs? Also not a good pairing. Chicken itself lacked seasoning. Just OK but used to be great. They only have ice cream for dessert, they need to improve on that as not everyone likes ice cream. We hurried through as we could not take the flies. It's hard to cut chicken while you're waving off insects. We loved this place on past visits but this may have turned us. :(

The food was outstanding. Everything was perfectly prepared, creatively designed, and delicious. The wait staff was attentive, but not spot on... ambiance is a little too shabby sheek, but nice enough, especially considering it's in Glen Ellen, which is a pretty laid back scene... Definetly will be back.

If you like to sweat profusely while eating out be my guest. The wood oven overpowers what little air conditioning there is in this restaurant. Add an open front door to the mix and you've created a haven for every fly within 20 miles. My advice to the chef/owner would be to install a new a/c system and some high powered fans. That would at least keep air moving and the flies from settling on the food and patrons. It was actually hotter in the restaurant that it was outdoors. That being said, the food is good, inventive, and well presented. The wood grilled octopus was a little chewy but had great flavor. My husband had the brick chicken and it was great. Veggies are the restaurants signature--all cooked in the wood oven.

We ate at Glen Ellen Star twice on two consecutive days we enjoyed it so much! We were on vacation from Houston, and this was a treat and highlight of our wonderful week. Food is simple but inventive and perfectly seasoned to enhance but not over-power. The veggies are a must. We loved the Brussels Sprouts! And the ice cream... Omg, what silky texture! Not too sweet; just right. Staff is fun and friendly. Love this place!

Had a 5:30 reservation and were first to be seated. Received menus, were told of specials and received water. Our waitress spent a long time on the menu at the next table and praising their baby. Finally, we got to order: wine, bread and salad to be served together, vegetables and crab. Wine and bread came but not salad. Were told "you'll get the salad when the kitchen prepares it." Salad finally came, then then the vegetables. Waited for entrees; when we asked about them were told they usually serve food "by course." That wasn't the case with anyone else in the restaurant. The diners with the baby left; we finally got our crabs. Got an apology for the slow service and a sack with a couple of complementary ice creams.

Great place to eat while in Glen Ellen. Very small, tables too close and eat inside because of the flies. Otherwise, the service was good and the food was done just beautifully. Their ice cream is homemade, but you can definitely share one, especially after eating dinner. Brussel sprouts were out of this world!!! Would go back again and again~

The service was wonderfully friendly and responsive. The food was delicious, and the dining room appealing. However, there were a few notable flaws for a restaurant in this price range. For instance, we found bits of cartilage in the lamb sugo; the homemade ice cream was really too sweet, and it left a coating of butter on our spoons (maybe it was over-processed); and there were flies that plagued us throughout the meal, landing on us and our food. The best dish was roasted Brussels sprouts with diced bacon; although slightly burnt, it was very flavorful.

Made reservations well in advance and when we arrived on a HOT evening, we weren't given the choice of sitting inside the air-conditioned restaurant, rather we were assigned an outdoor table on the road, which quickly was besieged by flies and wasps who joined us for dinner. So lesson learned, when reserving, specify you want to sit INSIDE the restaurant. Very limited menu options. Entrees vary in quality, steak good, fish dry. The sprouts get lots of press, but don't live up to the hype. However the grilled corn was quite good. Blueberry crisp, a new dessert item ,was simply heated up blueberries in a syrup sprinkled with a ginger snap cookie for $12.00! The management was gracious and comped us dessert, given our experience.

We were told about the GE Star by a winemaker pouring some wine for us and decided to try it. It's small, so tough to get in but absolutely worth the wait. They use a wood fired oven to cook just about everything. The veggies and pizza are "don't miss" items. We also tried the brick chicken (or something like that) which was terrific. If you're anywhere in the area, don't miss this gem.

My husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at the Glen Ellen Star and everything was perfect! The staff joined in the celebration and really made our evening very special. All of the food is fresh made and flavorful. We ate here two years ago and it was good then as well. We had delicious champagne to toast the night and finished with a late harvest Riesling that was out of this world. Hubby had Chilean Sea Bass and I ordered a handmade pasta with carrot butter and fresh English Peas. Yum! Dessert was a sumptuous berry cobbler and home made ice cream. The evening was wonderfully memorable.

The restaurant has wonderful, innovative food, particularly its emphasis on multiple and interesting vegetarian dishes. A vegetarian friend appreciates the opportunity to enjoy a dinner with more options than at most restaurants, yet options for non-vegetarians are many and also very inventive - ultra-fresh and satisfying. The staff is competent & friendly. Our only complaint when eating inside vs outside is the extremely high noise level, almost painful at times & it was impossible to converse except by shouting. If you want to be able to have a conversation or avoid hearing intimate details from the next table, ask for a table outside.

The owners have done a terrific job renovating what looks to be an old store in the charming hamlet of Glen Ellen. However, the dining experience didn't live up to the locale. We were expecting something terrific, given the reviews on Yelp. First up, the roasted veggies. The corn w/queso was so salty we complained. High marks that it was swept away and replacement was good but not great. The (6) brussels sprouts themselves were exemplary, first-rate, but the sweet topping of bacon, smothering. The calamari, the best dish of the evening, but again, serving too small. Then the entree, a chicken breast in sauce Veracruz, which turned out to be chopped tomatoes, etc. OVERPOWERED by an unpleasant, unidentified herb. Ice cream good. **

We were stuffed and took the yummy homemade ice cream home for the next night. Save salad for elsewhere. Always interesting tourist diners to chat with from everywhere. Hostess very helpful with the reservation. Don't miss a chance to sit at the bar to dine and chat with the Chefs. Great opportunity for gourmet and useful cooking tips. Outdoor patio is great. Service excellent! You will likely never order Flat Iron Steak elsewhere after this, nor will you want brussels sprouts without Star's brown sugar and bacon! And and and...
