A word from Glen Ellen Star
About Us

Established in 2012, Glen Ellen Star is the culmination of a decade-long dream by Chef Ari Weiswasser and his wife Erinn Benziger-Weiswasser. Resembling a quaint farmhouse while invoking a rural and rustic feeling of California wine country, Glen Ellen Star is a taste of both local and international flavors. It is the Weiswassers’ mission to create an inviting, neighborhood-friendly restaurant that consistently exceeds expectations. Ari has worked at New York’s Restaurant Daniel, Picholine, and Paul Liebrandt’s Corton, where he served as Chef de Cuisine. He also had a long stint at The French Laundry in Yountville, CA.

From the moment we walked into the 'Star' I'd say we felt right at home. We were greeted with champagne (to celebrate our wedding that took place the day before). Our wine for the evening was a bottle that remained from our wedding reception and there was no corkage fee and just great hospitality in general. We were seated next to a fairly loud group of 8 but by adjusting our seating to be side by side we had no problem with conversation during the meal, but it is safe to say the feel was "energetic". The kitchen in wide open so we could watch the magic being done on our behalf. We had the wood fired beats and cauliflower. OMG! They were the best veggies ever! Wood fired at 650 degrees really brings out the flavor. I could have made the whole meal from these alone (including dessert). We also had chicken which was delicious as well as an apple crisp with home made ice cream. Our feeling was this meal was tremendous value for the money we spent and we will definitely be going back in the future

Absolutely amazing last minute find while staying up the street at Gaige House. Reservations were full for Thursday but they were flexible for Wednesday. Cannot say enough about the food, especially the Brussels Sprouts and Sweet Potatoes. Luckily we found out we could bring our own bottle with no corking fee (good for the month of November). If you can get here, GO!!! Outside patio area was absolutely perfect too!

My wife and I recently dined here on our vacation to the Sonoma area. We brought our wine for the "before 6:30" free corkage. The Brussels sprouts with bacon were a good start. The staff was attentive. We ordered a pumpkin soup appetizer and an autumn chicories salad. Both were delicious. For our mains, we had a whole Dourade fish and Lamb casoulett. Everything was prepared well. The Dourade had been deboned prior to roasting in the wood fired oven and it was perfect. We asked for our leftovers to be boxed. We asked where they were when it was time to leave. Turns out they were in the wagon outside. Seems a bit odd. The wagon also holds a layer of corks in case you don't finish your bottle of wine. Our meal was approximately $110 + tip.

From the outside and location, the Star looks like a shabby place. Inside, it feels chic, like a vintage farmhouse. The food is exquisite; the combinations surprisingly excellent! The locals know this is a fabulous place and that's how we found it. I love that it's owned by a younger, local couple. Our server kind of deserted us after he got a table of his own friends in but we let it go because the food was so great. I'm still dreaming of the butternut squash soup with the lone lemon tortellini.

A gem of a restaurant. The chef is most creative and all dishes are cooked in an open hearth furnace resulting in wonderful flavors for even common foods like cauliflower, sweet potatoes, peppers. Excellent pizza and a delicious 'flatbread' sprinkled with zatar. The service is very efficient, attentive and helpful but never intrusive. The outside covered patio, though not decorated, is less noisy than the inside dining area and is perfect for larger groups. We've come here at least eight times, driving up from Marin County, and the food just keeps getting better.

Very cool looking place with a fun vibe. recycled materials and reclaimed wood, very nice. broccolini with cheese was great. flat iron steak was good, but got cold to quick because it was sliced and rather thin. $29 for flat iron is to expensive. Lamb special had a sauce that was to heavy and a bit over bearing. nutella ice cream was good.

Newbies frequently get suspicious upon being informed that the vegetable dishes listed on the menu are best served alone, and prior to appetizers & salads. But go ahead and be nonchalant: this place knows what it's doing. Dazzled first-timers, gently quizzed, frequently cite the vegetable dishes first as they re-live dinner's glories. As for entrees, our table had two orders of whole Dourade, de-boned, stuffed with onion and preserved lemon, and roasted in the wood oven; a braised lamb stew; and roasted duck legs with root mash and reduction sauce. All received the highest-marks. Excellent pizzas are available and the wine list, while not long (thank God), has some very nice surprises. Dessert? Simple: homemade ice cream. Enjoy!

Food was great; presentation lacked to say the least. Service was okay; staff not terribly knowledgeable. Pricing lacked evident logic - most veggies are about $10; not sure what makes 2 artichoke hearts worth $17. All in all - if prices were reduced by about 20% OR service and presentation kicked up several notches, I'd consider going back. As far as it is, we won't be returning.

We really enjoyed our meal at Glen Ellen Star, except that we found the mains a bit 'over-seasoned' (salty) for our taste. It is a charming restaurant and the server was equally charming and helpful. We were looking for a restaurant around Sonoma/Glen Ellen to satisfy vegetarians and meat eaters alike, and the Star fit the bill. Their vegetable dishes were great. The mains were also good, except as mentioned. The atmosphere was fun (we were inside) and the patio looked nice too. Would return.

First visit to Glen Ellen Star was a delight. Service was very friendly and efficient. The green salad I had was very simple and very, very fresh. My entree, Brick Chicken, was elegantly simple, moist and tasty. Dessert, an Apple Crumble served a la mode with their home made ice cream, was spectacular and could easily serve 3 or 4. Must go back.

This was our second visit to the Glen Ellen Star and we enjoyed it just as much as we did one year ago. We sat at the Chef's table and enjoyed talking with the chef and staff while they prepared the nightly courses. The brick chicken and cream corn is fabulous. In fact, we enjoyed our dinner so much we returned the next evening for the pizza. Service was outstanding, the ambiance great and the food is excellent.

The Glen Ellen Star is all about the food. Everything we ordered was perfect. The roasted vegetables are a vegetarians dream, except for the bacon on the Brussels Sprouts, which was my favorite. the Beets came in a close second. We brought our own wine a Sunce Trois Amis which paired perfectly with the roasted duck breast. It was a perfect pairing especially when you had a touch of the huckleberry sauce and polenta. I tried the wife's chicken with creamed corn and figs and it was great too. Don't know if they make a bad dish. The service was great. Attentive without being in your face all the time. Finished with the Apple Crisp and Nutella Ice Cream. Awesome! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a special meal fora special occasion.

The lamb Ragu was a unique, satisfying entree with a wonderful blend of tastes and textures served piping hot. Don't miss the brussel sprouts, this side dish may not be the healthiest way to get your veggies, but totally worth it. The service was excellent and if you sit at the bar, you have a bird's eye view of the cooking. Very small, so make a reservation.

… our initial feeling has strengthened: if this is not the best restaurant in the Glen Ellen-Sonoma region, it is definitely in contention. The food is a bit unorthodox, in that emphasis is put on vegetable side dishes. And for good reason: these are culinary triumphs. And no mistake, the entrees are equally as thrilling. We've yet to try the pizzas, but they appear like knockouts, and very popular. And people, it's Glen Ellen: that charming, artsy funkiness translates to having a waitstaff as congenial, humorous, smart and down-to-earth as can be imagined. Don't tell anyone, but when I'm here? I'm tempted to pack in the Sonoma place and move down the street...

I have returned to Glen Ellen Star often, because I live in Glen Ellen, and it's always a delicious and enjoyable evening. It may not be for everyone--the menu is somewhat eclectic and limited to mostly wood-fired foods--but they are awesome. It is a great place to go with a friend to enjoy a bottle of wine and a series of delicious small plates. The artichokes are to die for! The outdoor patio on a summer evening is delightful.

Back to "The Star" for our last meal of this year's stay in wine country. This small establishment, with its tiny kitchen, turns out more well-conceived, excellently-executed dishes than most larger, fancier and more expensive restaurants. Although the pizzas are tasty, be certain to order veggies. This kitchen's way with great local produce is truly exceptional. We also were blown away by a whole sea bass special, cooked to perfection and perfumed with herbs and Meyer lemon. Finally, the house made ice creams are excellent; try over one of their fruit crisps. One of the wine country's best.

You wouldn't go to the Star for the ambiance. Inside the restaurant, the ambiance is more like a very clean diner, small and a little crowded. But, after tasting this food the ambiance doesn't matter. There were three of us, and we each ordered a separate vegetable dish which we all shared. One could easily make a meal on these wonderfully prepared delights. We also shared a white pizza, and a baked whole fish. My wife said that this was the best meal that she has ever had, and we eat out often. Our waitress and the service was excellent. There is a enclosed, outside, screened patio that looked very nice for warm evening dining. We will very definitely be going back to the Glen Ellen Star
