A word from Gitane
Known as San Francisco’s hidden gem, Gitane’s interior exhibits the sexy playfulness of a 1930’s cabaret, the swagger of Serge Gainsbourg, and the audacious spirit of the 70’s disco era. Executive Chef Alicia Jenish is taking the gypsy Gitane back to her roots with a culinary program focused on Spain, France, and North Africa. Using whole animal butchery and a love for spice, expect to see rotating items such as grilled goat, seafood tajines, and house-made goat merguez.
In other exciting news: Come check out the Patio Happy Hour, take on a house-made gin & tonic, sangria, or any other libation of choice and Chef Jenish will send you out her tapas du jour, patio only.

Diner Reviews
  • "easy to write a review when the experience was fabulous across the board... from the bartenders to our server, the service was on point. the food and ambiance were outstanding. if you haven't tried this place, its time to go!"

  • "I really liked the atmosphere when I walked in. It's a shame the food was so poorly prepared."

  • "The cocktails and food were good. The waiter we had was awesome. It just seems like this place caters to the hotel crowd, including the 4 high end escorts and their 2 old male clients. It was a weird experience, based primarily on the crowd."

  • "Started off with drinks at the bar then had a delicious meal. Neat atmosphere. Particularly appealing as an option close to many of the big conference hotels but with a bit more character and quality than many of the places in the area."

  • "Food was good but not amazing. Drinks were really interesting and good though."

  • "Attentive service, Good Ambiance, Well prepared and uniquely flavored food. Well rounded menu (Meats, Fish, Vegetables). Nose level was low and very attentive service. both at the bar and over dinner."

  • "I hadn't been to Gitane in probably 6 months and have to say that my wife and I just had an amazing evening. Food was great, the service was amazing, the ambiance is always perfect, and the drinks rock. Big fan."

  • "As foodies, Gitane has creative presentation, food was flavorful, selective wine list and drinks, ambience was romantically chic and definitely a great place for a date. Great energy. Wait staff were attentive. A neighborhood gem, indeed!"

  • "The restaurant is really nice, the service was great, and the wine list was extensive and had an original selection. But the food was not very memorable, a little disapointed by the choices (not very Basque)"

  • "I was little concerned after reading some horrendous reviews on YELP, but we had a great time: food was very tasty servers friendly and atentive. Table are little close to each other so it is very noisy, and the meny is somewhat limitted. But we had fun! The door to the bathroom, quite surprising arhictecture. Would recommend to a friend."

  • "My beau and i went to GItane for our SF date night...sat in a great corner booth upstairs, very romantic. Great wine suggestion by our waitress, and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Food was really good...had the pate and cheese plate, salad and a Branzino dish that was delicious. Overall great experience and would recommend to anyone looking for romantic cozy meal and place."

  • "The seafood tagine was astonishing--full of flavor, perfectly cooked. The service was attentive and fast. Nothing lacked."

  • "Great ambience and fabulous modern decor. Service was very attentive. However, the food is rather subpar and utterly disappointing. cress salad with beets and clementines: forgettable bacon bon bons: decadent but needs better finesse vegetarian garden tajine: filler food clam and pork casuela: deep broth, but entree is just not satisfying enough hazelnut crema catalan: best part of the night meyer lemon olive oil cake: too nuanced. needs more lemon. Improve on tiny food portions? We were hungry and feeling peckish when we got home an hour later after dinner. Certainly not the take-away sentiment you want after fine dining. Pricey for offerings. Probably not going back."

  • "The menu used to have many small interesting options. it has now changed to include a few expensive entrees instead. dessert used to have a chocolate pot de creme. I was disappointed that it was gone. the restaurant also used to be quieter and more romantic. but now the tables are too close together so we got did you hear the ramblings of the drunken group next to us in entirety. the food used to be memorable. now it's just ordinary. however the service was excellent."

  • "This restaurant is more North African / Spanish then Spanish and it definitively isn't Tapas. The service was impeccable, and the Herring (Sardine) excellent; great Creme Catalan and the best Coffee in San Francisco However, the restaurant was overly warm."

  • "I was absolutely impressed with the food, service, ambiance, and everything. I brought my sister from New York City and she was impressed too. Thank you!"

  • "The restaurant decor is something between spanish french in the 50s. The food is good. Chef has some original combinations. The flatbread is unique. The cocktails are also interesting."

  • "Got a last minute reservation for a Saturday night. Arrived early and had cocktails at the bar. The ambiance is quite special - took us back to the best spots we visited in Spain. The bartender was attentive and knowledgeable. Same for our waiter who was always there when we needed him, but didn't hover. Both helped us choose well from the interesting and well executed menu. We'd definitely return on our next visit from NYC."

  • "First, they had rabbit. Second, the waitress were fun and provided excellent service, Overall, a place with A LOT of fun food; from the appetizers to desserts (I had one that I am still having trouble describing - it involved poached blood orange). Overall: AWESOME!"

  • "This is a gem in the middle of the financial district. You should try it, at least once! Service was good, food was better!"

  • "I am always more than willing to spend money on good food, however I was thoroughly disappointed. We order the flatiron steak which was overcooked (got well done instead of medium) and tasteless. We also got the chicken which was okay, nothing I couldn't make myself. What was phenomenal was the merguez which in hindsight, I wish we ordered a few plates of that and the ceviche (which was pretty good)."

  • "My friend and I only dine out together every so often as we like to EAT. The host moved us to a larger table without judgement or complaint (we'd explained we would definately require more area for all the food we intended to try.) Our waitress, Nahide (I hope I've got that right) was awesome. Her suggestions and gentle steering of our voracious appetites were spot on. Her timing and service was just perfect. I'm not sure if she will remember us, but we will definately ask to be seated in her section whenever we return. Bacon Bon-Bons!! Stuffed squid with squid ink pasta, steak done "just right", cheeses oh sooo good.....perfect service, great atmosphere. Just go!"

  • "Our experience at Gitane was wonderful, with great ambiance, and fantastic food: the only challenge was our wait-staff who seemed to have problems with many aspects of our food order, sequence, missing items, and a whiff of insolence. We highly recommend if the professionalism was on par with the food excellence."

  • "My fiancee and I went to Gitane on Valentine's Day - huge rookie move and our first time going out on Valentine's Day in five years. Menu was prix fixe but very limiting, and prepared without much care. We additionally ordered the wine paring for the extra $40 - though each paired wine was delivered after the course it was coupled with. The service was unattentive save for the server who brought us a pretty awesome sherry to make up for the overall terribleness of the situation. Honestly, the only highlight of the night was watching the horrible couple next to us go through an even more horrible break up between appetizers and dessert. So there was that. Not worth the $360."

  • "All I can say is - I was disappointed. Food mediocre. Waited at host table for several minutes and still no one greeted us. I had to ask a waiter to check in for our reservation time. Waited 1 hour after our reservation time. Thumbs down!"

  • "The cuisine leans towards Basque/Catalan and the wines are Spanish and well suited for the meals. The food is expertly plated and the on plate pairings are also inventive. It is a small restaurant, inside, I felt slightly cramped and it can get quite noisy. The service was more casual than I expected. Worth the visit if you appreciate the cuisine."

  • "We came for a special occasion and communicated that in advance to the host. We also mentioned to the server that we were celebrating and looking forward to taking our time with our meal. We ordered several appetizers to share, as well as an entree with the intention of ordering more as the meal went on. Everything came out at the same time within 7 minutes of our ordering, giving the impression that the food was in the back on warming trays. We felt very rushed. In the end, our romantic dinner lasted all of 35 minutes. We were so disappointed in the rushed service, that we decided not to order more. We actually went to a small neighborhood bistro and finished our celebratory meal there. What a shame!"

  • "This is a gorgeously appointed restaurant- plush, textured, with a sultry vibe. But the food did not meet our expectations. Our server was very efficient, but waxed so lyrical about the menu that we spent most of the dinner trying to connect her extravagant descriptions to the average plates we received. Their "extraordinary goat 3 ways" was under seasoned. Only the loin chop shone (but it was just a roasted loin chop). The squid ink pasta with pork-stuffed calamari was more interesting than tasty. The date-bacon bonbons were too rich. Their panna cotta was touted as the best dessert in SF but was just an average panna cotta. I would certainly return for appetizers and a bottle of wine, but would skip the full meal and its hefty price tag."

  • "Our experience was...okay. The food choices were unusual and interesting (in a good way). The wait staff...well, let's just say that I wish as much effort went into working efficiently and promptly as went into the verbose and theatrical descriptions of every menu item, whether requested or not. Freak atmosphere, love the decor, and appreciated their extra effort to call prior and discuss my special request note. It's a fun place at the bar for sure, and I'd probably pop in for a drink if in the neighborhood."

  • "I was surprised by the relative small menus. The persimmons and beet salad, blook sauce flatbread and crab cakes were all good but uninteresting. The seafood tajine was flavorful but way too moist. It's a cute restaurant with an ecletic cozy decor. Maybe I should have just gone for drinks."

  • "Portions were VERY small. Otherwise food was great."

  • "I had a memorable meal here 2 years ago and was eager to return. Unfortunately, it seems as if the restaurant has changed hands and the quality of the food and the service is not up to the same standards. The drink list was interesting, but not inspiring. The food was tasty, although my dining partner's appetizer was overcooked and substituted ingredients as described on the menu. My main course was good, but dessert- a lemon cake, was bland and dry. With all the incredible choices in SF, this would not be on the top of my list anymore."
