A word from Gitan Bistro Cru
Gitan is a bistro and wine bar specializing French/Mediterranean flair and rare, hard to find wines. After 10pm they have a special late night menu.

"In Europe we thought of wine as something as healthy and normal as food and also a great giver of happiness and well being and delight. Drinking wine was not a snobbism nor a sign of sophistication nor a cult; it was as natural as eating and to me as necessary."
—Ernest HemIngway

  • Worth the wait, but there's a wait.

The decor, bartender/server and ambiance were all very welcoming. And the food was the best that I've had in a while -- but be prepared for a long wait. From the time we walked in the door, our meal (wine, baba ghanoush, two entrees and a dessert) took nearly 3 hours. There was a wine-and-painting event in the back of the restaurant, so watching that helped to pass the time. I recommend Gitan Bistro, but patrons must be prepared for the wait.

This was our second time at GBC. The first time was for wine and cheesel. This time, we were there for dinner. We ordered beverages and an appetizer shortly after getting there. The beverages came immediately (at which time we ordered our entrées) and were pretty much gone by the time the appetizer got there. The entrées took an hour to come from the time we ordered them. My husband had ordered his steak rare with extra vegetables instead of starch. It came medium w/potatoes. We sent it back. I shared my plate with him because he was hungry and watched him eat his food when it came. They did comp us our 2nd round of drinks - which they told us when we paid the check. If they'd told us earlier, I would've grumbled less. We won't be back.

The service was prompt and accommodating. The alcoholic drinks were moderately priced considering the use of top brand ingredients. The menu selection was well designed and the Mid-eastern appetizers were unusual for the Baltimore area and very tasty.

Gitan is a great neighborhood find. High quality and varied menu. Omlettes are terrific and sandwiches are great having had the lamb Shawarma and cheesesteak. Appetizers, mostly Lebanese, are among the best around. And the wine list is fantastic and reasonable. Service was very good this night but has been known to be slow but relaxing at other times.

Set in a residential part of the Canton neighborhood, this is a very pleasant surprise. The food is a Mediterranean mix, some North African, some French bistro-type food. Unhurried service, good wines at a reasonable price. We will go again.

  • 45 minute cheese plate

    Dined on 5/23/2014
We sat outside and was immediately greeted by a server. We ordered a bottle of wine and a cheese plate. We wanted the Cava, but they were out, so we got the chardonnay. It came out right away, but came with nothing to keep it cold, so we had a bottle sitting on our table getting warm. The server came out and said, let me get something to keep that cold, and then disappeared and never came back. The cheese plate took 45 minutes to come out! By that time, we only had a little bit left of the bottle that we wanted to enjoy with the cheese. The worst part was that another couple came abut 20 minutes after us and also sat outside, and the server brought out our cheese plate with theirs. So we waited 45 minutes, and they got theirs right away.

Have been twice. Both times equally good most recent visit with four friends and Groupon for wine and cheese pairings. Service prompt, excellent, friendly. Cheese selections delicious and it came with perfectly ripened fruit. Other dishes also ordered by my friends - lentils, shrimp - fabulous. Will gladly go again even without Groupon. Only drawback is parking which can be a hassle. If going with friends, car pool or check into Charm City Circulator to see if it goes there.

The Mediterranean dishes were very good. But the items that deviated from the regional fare were fairly simple. Stick with the traditional Mediterranean dishes! Also, be patient. The restaurant appears a bit understaffed and it took a while to get through the meal. This is perfectly fine as long as it is expected.

The service was very bad. When we got to the restaurant there were only two other patrons. However, after waiting for nearly an hour for our entrées, no one ever apologized or even acknowledged how long things were taking. We ended up leaving before the food came and even then we received no apologies, just confused looks from the staff as if they could not fathom why we were giving up. A very disappointing and frustrating experience. Will never go back.

I went because I had a Living Social deal for wine & cheese. The deal noted that I should make reservations which I am glad I did because the place was packed except for one table which frantic bar tender/server/hostess said you can sit there after seeing me standing for 2 minutes. The row home turned restaurant was very nice, but was packed to the brim. It took the single front staff person a 10 min to get our order in and about another 10 to get our wine and then another 10 to get our cheese to go with our wine. In between ordering and getting our wine we were asked to move to a smaller table to accommodate one of the larger parties that was waiting. All and all besides being understaffed the food was above average.

I went here over the weekend with a groupon for a wine and cheese pairing, and loved the atmosphere but after waiting for an hour to get our cheese plate, i was less than thrilled. The server apologized a few times and explained that they had been backed up for several hours, but from hearing comments from other staff members, it seems to be a fairly regular occurrence. The server was knowledgeable about the wine list and recommended some great pairings for the cheeses we had ordered.

Everything about it spelled perfect romantic Valentines Day restaurant! Food and service were fantastic. Wine was great. Comfy and cozy while maintaining a high class feel. The tables were close together but never felt crammed or like the other table next to us invaded our space. My wife is pregnant and loved the chicken entree! It was a perfect valentines evening for us! Staff were wonderful and enjoyable. Never felt rushed or forgotten. Cannot say it enough at how perfect the restaurant was for us on valentines day!

The restaurant is not very big but is small and quaint with a lot of character. The tables on the wall are a bit close together so you can't help but hear the guests conversation next to you. in there were only 2 servers on a Friday night so if you are pressed for time this may not be the restaurant for you. But me and my boyfriend had planned a leasurely dinner and the whole experience was 2 hours and 15 minutes. The lemon pepper salmon was delicious and seasoned perfectly! My bf had the scampi and he loved it! The food here is wonderful and tastes like it is prepared from mom's kitchen.

The food takes a little longer to come out but that's because there's one cook & she prepares your food with a lot of love! It is DEFINITELY worth the wait.
