Diner Reviews
  • "I dined at Girl & the Goat two nights ago (Friday) and have got to say that I have never had customer service this good in my entire life! After having issues with our reservations, where they were not properly logged into the system, the chief hostess informed me that it would be a 1.5 hour wait because we were simply not in the system for the right time slot. I was clearly perturbed. She offered my wife and I drinks while we waited and ended up finding us a table within around 20 minutes. That is how you impress customers, and I will definitely be spreading the word about how great this place is. Regarding the food itself, it is absolutely phenomenal-- every single dish! If you pass on this restaurant, you are passing on the best."

  • "Found out about this place on Food network, and was able ti get a reservation on a busy holiday weekend-what a great meal, and equally great dining experience!"

  • "Well thought menu with flavors that melded magnificently! Everything was fresh and very innovative. The roasted cauliflower was indescribably delicious. Would definitely go again"

  • "Food was great but way too much! Waiter told us each (party of 4) to order 2 to 3 dishes and share them all. Ended up with 10 items to share. 6 dishes would have been plenty. Veg dishes were much better than the meats. Halibut was delish. Too loud in the restaurant to hear each other talking."

  • "I have yet to have a bad experience here. I had the goat neck for the first time and it was amazing! Always get the green-beans and goat empanadas. Our server was very personable!"

  • "Four of us met and had dinner before a concert at the UC. It was our first time there and we had a great experience. The service was perfect, not too intrusive not too submissive. Suggestions were helpful and we ordered the goat neck as one of our plates and found it to be delicious. There was a great variety of choices and all were spectacular. Would definitely come back again for a fun and scrumptious night out. Thank you!"

  • "One of the best meals of my life. Must try their goat specialties; the flavors are so surprising in a good way, it will change the way you think about use and taste of goat in cuisine, and how it pairs with other ingredients. The other non-goat dishes are equally delicious. Less surprising, but extremely well executed. Grilled octopus was one of my favorites of the night. They also have a great wine list, and the server's recommendations were spot on. If ever in Chicago again, I would definitely try to re-visit. I recommend this place to anyone who loves food!"

  • "Restaurant was really packed - noise levels were almost deafening and we had to wait about 20-25mins from our reservation time to be seated. Food was designed for sharing, while the server recommended 2-3 dishes per person, 5 items were enough to fill our party of 3. Highly recommend the wood grilled broccoli, wood fired sepia, and their breads. Their pig face, goat belly were pretty decent too."

  • "Can't wait to go back again. Very hard to get to get a reservation in advance but was able to secure one the day before. Stephanie Izzard was at the back, making sure all the orders were prepared. Would love if she would greet some of her patrons personally as she is so well known and runs such a great restaurant!"

  • "So different and very good! Everything was really good and I would recommend!"

  • "This place is simply outstanding. If I lived in Chicago, I would scheme to eat here as much as possible. All the food is outstanding. The dishes for which I had the lowest expectations ended up being my favorites. The green beans, for instance, are unreal. Green beans! Who would've thought? The pork shank and pig face were both excellent, but my expectations for them were high as well. The goat empanadas were superb. Loved the halibut, and the bread was just delicious. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Only downside -- they move you through. Our reservation was at 5:15, and service was brisk. I got the sense that really wanted to turn our table over -- and I can understand why."

  • "A lot of things had goat cheese and corn this time around. I'm not complaining...the bread with goat cheese butter and corn relish-delicious! The wood-fired broccoli was so smokey-yum-but had too much blue cheese sauce-heavy. The chickpea fritters were surprising-little cubes with chickpeas pureed so smooth, and cardamom. The grilled baby octopus was fine but the lemon vinaigrette was unusually bitter. The halibut with marcona almond butter, white asparagus, and blueberry nuoc cham was outstanding-favorite dish. For dessert: corn kulfi with zucchini cake, lemony eggplant, tomato caramel, and corn crunch was so interesting. It was a spice cake and the eggplant was like pineapple. Peach & blueberry buckle-delicious. Very sweet peaches."

  • "Really Amazing Place Everyone must go when in Chicago"

  • "Despite the long drive from where we live and the challenge in securing a reservation there is not a better food orientated dining experience out there, every dish we have tried has been consistently outstanding and we really like the one plate at a time sharing experience where the chef determines the sequence and each dish is piping hot when served. We do make a point of asking for the dishes to be staged so that there is some gap between each which ensures a leisurely dining experience. This place is the best, I cannot recommend it enough."

  • "My husband and I were given a gift certificate and didn't really expect to love the food and the experience, but we did! We don't consider ourselves foodies. We were happy that a friend told us about the chef's table so we could request it. It was great to chat with the chefs and watch them in action. The food was so original, fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. We also expected it to be more expensive and were pleasantly surprised that although it is not the average amount we spend on a dinner out, it was not outrageous for this level of excellence! We would definitely come back and recommend it to other people (we already have!)"

  • "I went here for an anniversary dinner. Both of us are gluten intolerant, but our waitress was very accommodating for this. Their "gluten free menu" is essentially the regular menu with asterisks to designate which items contain fish sauce, etc. Our waitress was fairly knowledgeable about the materials used in cooking. We ordered the roasted cauliflower (larger portion than expected and I wasn't a huge fan of the seasoning), scallops (hands down the best of what we ordered), pig face (imo fattier than I prefer, but that might be expected with it being face and all), duck breast (a little too salty at the ends, but good and tender otherwise), and goat empanadas. All in all a delicious meal!"

  • "We cannot say enough good things about the food and our server. We tried seven different dishes and loved them all!! Especially good were the pig face, goat empanadas, green beans with fish sauce and the hamachi crudo. Bread service with goat butter was an amazing start to the meal and the miso butterscotch budino to finish was lovely. The place is LOUD, though. I adored the soundtrack playing (90's and early 200's hip hop) but don't come here expecting a quiet, intimate dinner. It's a scene, so be prepared to yell at your server and dining mates. (The hostess wasn't great. We waited 30 minutes for our table, even though we had a reservation and she never once acknowledged us or apologized for the wait which would have saved it for us)"

  • "Came into Chicago for a long weekend with my wife. The food, energy, and service at Girl & the Goat were amazing. We sat at the kitchen side table overlooking the kitchen and watched them cook up tasty dishes all night. Hard to pick a favorite dish- all were tremendous."

  • "Been to many of the top rated restaurants in chicago and around. Girl and the Goat tops the list with ease."

  • "This is the second time, I've been to Girl & the Goat. I'm a huge Top Chef fan so when I was able to make a second reservation at Stephanie's restaurant I looked forward to it for the three weeks I had to wait. Definitely not a last minute decision, although there are seats at the bar where you can order food. You may just have to sip wine until you can get two chairs together. The atmosphere is really cool - definitely a modern take on a rustic barn. It was just so noisy. This is partly because the place is packed but the loud music playing didn't help. That's probably my only complaint. The best part about this restaurant is being able to share the food with friends! There will be hits and misses, but definitely worth the experience!"

  • "Exceptionally great food and service. I know why we could get only an early evening reservation 8 weeks prior to our visit. Nice casual place but, it's all about the food - all was absolutely AMAZING."

  • "Unbelievably good as always. Likely still the best all around dining experience in Chicago. All of the dishes, quite a few of which have been on the menu for a while, were prepared beautifully. Pork shank is on another level!!"

  • "Everything was good. A little too rich as a whole."

  • "This restaurant was fabulous. The wait staff is extremely well trained! They know the menu inside and out. They are sensitive to allergies and know what to recommend or alter to give you an amazing opportunity. The food was just outstanding. One of the most enjoyable eating experiences ever!"

  • "Very, very busy even though a 9:15 reservation on a Monday night! Food was excellent . Wait service a little off, although worked in our favor as we received a dish we didn't order and was delicious. Was grateful to sit outside as was so loud inside conversation very difficult."

  • "What can I say but w0w! We finally made it to this "too good to be true" foodie mecca in Chicago and we were not disappointed. Each dish played with all of our senses. We started with a loaf of tomato and rosemary bread served with tomato oil and salted cream cheese served with a bottle of Failla 2012 pinot noir, followed by goat empanadas, pig face (its important to mush up the egg, pig and sauces together to get the full experience), glazed pork shank (a stunning dish) and a side order of cauliflower (sliced and then grilled and served with pine nuts). We tried the "house favorite" short cake served with pineapple and caramel followed by goat cheese and dessert wine. Service was attentive and helpful. We are coming back on our next trip."

  • "Four of us went to celebrate my birthday. Our reservation was earlier than we would have liked but the restaurant was almost full before 6 p.m. We each ordered 2 plates to share and the waitress was very attentive and the timing of the food coming to the table was great. We did not feel rushed nor did we have to wait to long between dishes. I loved everything. Not sure I can choose favorite: the haddock was delish and the pig face to die for...steak tartar...all just really complex and so good!! We will return!!"

  • "Fantastic meal was had!!! We tried several dishes I'd never have thought to try and even my kids, ages 13, tasted and enjoyed it. I'd never have guessed they would eat duck tongue or berg tongue but they did and thought they were the best ones. The ham frites are to die for and the pigs face was luxury on a plate. It was our first visit to Chicago from DC and we choose Chicago because we wanted to try Stephanie's place. Well done!!!"

  • "Excellent food, very good service, moderately priced. Makes you realize that cooking is an art too!! We had the Corn Fed Bread, Roasted Beetroots, Goat Shoulder, Wild Salmon and Bittersweet Chocolate for dessert. We topped it with an Espresso (the best I have had in this country). Every dish was well made and flavorful. The goat dish may not be to everyone' pallette but I grew up in India where meat means goat meat. I will go back to the place everytime I have to visit Chicago. Would recommedn this palce to anyone visiting Chicago."

  • "My friends and I were visiting from DC, and this place had come highly recommended by friends. It didn't disappoint; in fact, it surpassed expectations. The only reservation we could get was at 11:30pm on Friday. We arrived a little bit early and when three seats at the bar opened up, we opted to eat there and cancel our table reservations. The bartender was incredibly helpful and personable, providing strong recommendations with helpful commentary and details about each dish. The food came out at a good pace, and everything we had was deeply satisfying on some level. We decided afterwards that it was probably some of the best food we've tasted, anywhere."

  • "This is my favorite restaurant ever. Great place to try some delicious foods you are unlikely to find other places. I recommend getting bread, the cauliflower, the broccoli, the pig's face, the goat empanadas, and scallops. The Budino is one of my favorite desserts anywhere and the Best of Three is the best cocktail I've ever had. The menu can be overwhelming, but we found that servers were eager to explain the dishes. This place is very unpretentious and fun, but it was very loud and not always easy to talk to my spouse. We were disappointed with the goat loin, which was very chewy."
    Dined on 8/15/2014
  • "The cauliflower was amazing! The zucchini bread dessert, a true delight! The pinot grigio was a refreshing, crisp addition to our meal. The server was personable and professional without over doing any of it. But the rest..... well... we could have done without. The oysters were bland, the hamachi was poorly paired with 'crisp pork belly' (we get the craze, but this was an unflattering combination), and the goat (The Goat!) was not remotely memorable. Overall, a lovely evening due to the company and service staff, but the food itself did not warrent the expense or a need to return."

  • "We really wanted to write a good review on the food but we can't...Great building, great service, but we felt like we should be buying a T-Shirt that says "I ate at the Girl & The Goat." We are sure this is a popular place because of the Chef being a minor celebrity, but we can name 30 restaurants in the Midwest that top the food served here. Come here if you want to say you went, but don't go if you want to have a meal that moves you. Sorry."
    Dined on 8/14/2014
  • "I think this may have been the best meal I've ever had in my life! The flavors were exquisite. Though many dishes had cilantro, and I can't eat that at all, there were plenty of dishes that didn't and they were all amazing. Can't describe because they don't sound interesting, but they were amazing! Halibut, ribs and broccoli were some of our favorites!"

  • "I don't live in Chicago but am in town often on business and had heard great things about this restaurant. It lived up to the hype! Our server was wonderful, the food was inventive but not too crazy, and all of it was delicious. Now it's on my "must go" list when I'm in the Windy City!"

  • "Excellent food, energetic staff, outstanding ambience."
    Dined on 8/14/2014
  • "The only reservation we could get was 10:15 and considering the hype surrounding his place, we were prepared for a high level of pretentiousness and for the staff to rush us through our meal, but that was not the case at all! Our server was laid back, but energetic and made wonderful recommendations and timed our plates perfectly. Two of us shared the sepia, goat liver mousse, scallops, and the halibut. Each plate lived up to the hype, but be warned, the goat liver mousse is VERY filling dish and might be best for a larger group. The music is loud and makes for a fun night out, but might not be the best place if one is seeking an intimate meal. Overall, I would recommend."

  • "I could reserve only at my 3rd visit to Chicago. It increased my expectations maybe too much. It is one of the restaurants taking advantage of today fashion for Masterchef and similar. The place is not crowded because of their food (here it is EXTREMELY GOOD) but because you must go there and then you feel right. At my age and with decades of interest in food and wines I do not buy into these places. The noise level doesn't allow you to talk to your companion, 3 dishes brought immediately at the table and the 4th came in after 40 minutes, the bread also came after 30 minutes, the wine (as I told the waiter) had no defects hence I did not feel like rejecting it but it was a shame for the list of such a restaurant to have it. I won't go back"
    Dined on 8/13/2014
  • "We continue to return to Girl and the Goat because it is an inviting and inventive experience. The décor and service is always warm. While pig and goat seem to be the go-to menu items here, I found the fish--halibut and sepia--to be the best dishes. Creative and packed with flavor."

  • "My husband and I dined here during our anniversary trip to Chicago. I made the reservation about 3 months in advance and I'm glad that I did because it was packed (on a Tuesday!) and we were able to sit at the coveted chef's table. First time in my life that my favorite dish of the evening was green beans! Our waitress told us when we ordered "these are not your mother's green beans". She couldn't have been more correct! The duck breast was also perfect. Great local beers on tap. I would recommend everyone try this fabulous restaurant when in Chicago."
