Diner Reviews
  • "Unbelievable combinations. Everything we had was fantastic. Highly recommend."

  • "A beautiful room, a great valley locale and beautiful, delicious cuisine thanks to Chef CJ Jacobson, who makes every plate a work of art, I wish I could dine here every night!"

  • "While I may already be tired of the whole foraged thing, I am certainly never going to tire eating well made food with distinctive flavors. Do not miss the octopus starter or the trout. The broth with the trout could be be a course by itself. The burrata salad with fruit and lentils was also outstanding. Didnt have any room left for dessert, so cannot comment on that."

  • "we (me+husband) went there in January...and it was great...we return in april...it was just good...maybe the chef was missing....service was OK...but no advise from the waiter on what to choose...no advise for the wine....no good bye when we left...as for the valet...after I paid+tipped him...this what he said..."here is your key...your car is over there...thank you bye".... ?!?!?! wt don't think I want to come back"

  • "I LOVED IT AND CANT WAIT TO GO BACK. CJ THE CHIEF ADDS A TON OF CHARM WHEN HE COMES TO THE TABLES AND ASKS WHAT WE THINK...."

  • "We were disappointed. I had read the reviews and been given great feedback from a close personal friend and our expectations were fairly high. It hasn't been more than a few weeks since our friends had a fabulous meal. Now, we had no trouble with a last minute reservation and the most recent comments on-line are more consistent with our experience that our friends. Possibly a change in staff or the particular night of the week could make a difference??? The food just wasn't inspiring or impressive from a taste perspective. Great flavor was promised, just not delivered. The food was beautiful, really pretty to look at. The highlight was the salted caramel ice cream served with the brownie."

  • "Much of the time the starters in a restaurant are better than the main courses. Great variety and delicious flavors of the starters are often followed by good but uninspired main courses. Not at Girasol. The starters were disappointing, as the chef's reach exceeded his grasp. Too much effort at trying to put unusual ingredients together which failed to complement each other. The main courses, on the other hand, were excellent: well-prepared and delicious renditions of dishes found on many menus. Keep your expectations in check with respect to the starters and hope for the best. Then enjoy the main courses."

  • "Every detail of our dinner was incredible. The choices of the entrees really reflected the Spring season and also there were many dishes meant to be shared. I know we ordered way too much - 3 dishes to share, 4 entrees, and 2 desserts for 4 people, but we loved every bite!"

  • "Lovely little place with interesting, innovative food. Been there twice and happy both times. Only two criticisms: the seating is really uncomfortable; iron work surrounding table legs leaves little room for legs. We had to keep shifting around to get a comfortable position. Knees are especially vulnerable!, and the chairs don't fit the tables very well, so it's not a comfortable dining experience. It's also super, super noisy. We had a party of three and by the end of the evening we were practically shouting and trying to lip read. There are virtually no textiles or soft surfaces, so noise level is a real issue. I would think twice about going again for this reason."

  • "Beautiful restaurant. Food was very good, especially the whole snapper."

  • "We recently made our third visit and this time introduced some friends to Girasol. Everything was terrific - sunchokes with dates, fava beans purée, greans, and each couple shared the halibut which was perfectly cooked. Great space and happy to see thryvr been able to add a full bar. Adam made an impressive Old Fashioned while we waited for our friends."

  • "I had an early dinner with a friend at Girosol and had a great experience. The beet and goat cheese appetizer and the Fish entrees were perfectly cooked and very interesting. The wine list was not as interesting, by the glass, as I had hoped. Nice place. Very pretty."

  • "The food and decor are impeccable. Really top notch. Our service, however, was disappointing - unfriendly and inattentive. And we were made to feel silly for asking whether one of the dishes could be modified. Although the decor is truly a triumph, we couldn't help but mentally rearrange the configuration of the tables so that it didn't feel like we were dining together with the people next to us. Little things -- like a charge for bread and a slightly-steep fee for the valet -- set the wrong tone. I plan to go back because I love the food and design, but wish they were a more focused on pleasing their customers."

  • "This was our second time here and we really enjoyed it. We had the Sunchoke and meatball apps. Both were terrific and different. For dinner we had the 14 oz steak and pork chop. The steak was cooked to perfection and delicious, and the pork chop and sides were paired perfectly. My only two critiques would be that the entree selections are not that deep and there were no specials that night. And as we like to bring wine with us to dinner, the corkage was a little high ($25) for the neighborhood."

  • "the food at this beautiful, well designed and handsomely lit restaurant was superb. the only element of the evening that kept it from being a full five star experience was the drinks from the bar. indistinctive and overpriced, the presentation of alcohol didn't match the innovative, beautifully executed food menu."

  • "Nice to have a true "foodie" spot in the Valley. Girasol comes very close to being a really special restaurant. All the food I had was very good, although no one thing was so awesome that I crave it and must go back, which is what it takes for me to give 5 stars for food. But, I certainly haven't tried everything yet and I will be going back and making my way through the menu."

  • "My husband is a very good cook and it's difficult sometimes to pay for food items on a menu that I know my husband can create. Nothing on this menu was simple nor easy and it was all very tasty from the wonderful octopus salad to the presentation of the delicious snapper. And that was true for all of the dishes, beautifully and artfully presented and tastes that were not overwhelming but nuanced and pleasing."

  • "Took my 88-year old mother to brunch for her birthday - it was a perfect meal. I look forward to coming back with my husband and friends for sharing plates, as I enviously watched others trying everything on the menu. Concerned that ordering the eggs and bacon was a pedestrian choice, the pleasant server explained the dish as being the finest version of each item on the plate. Hard to imagine, and yet what arrived truly was my most magnificent egg meal to date. Freshest local eggs, perfectly cooked smoked bacon, remarkable preparation of potato skins, perfectly dressed light rocket salad, beautiful toast. Perfect. And every person working the shift stopped by at one point or another to wish my mom a happy birthday. Fabulous day."

  • "Great attention to detail. Even the house toast and jam are finely prepared."

  • "This was our first time at Girasol and it lived up to its reputation. The food was not only high quality, but the preparation was a little different. "A little different", in this case, made it better than ever. We will be back."

  • "The restaurant is a little hard to find but when you do a surprise awaits you. Ask for Paul as your server he really knew what to recommend after listening to our different tastes. On the "shared" appetizer menu the only thing that stood out was the meatballs and octopus salad. I heard the beet salad was good but we skipped that one. We were told that most ingredients were "foraged" a new term for Whole Foods I think? The main course was more interesting. We each had the lamb, pork, halibut and the fish of the day. three of the choices were amazing except for the halibut which was swimming in butter and lacked flavor. I would definitely recommend the pork chop or lamb. My tongue threw a party for my mouth."

  • "You're probably going to spend $100 per person for dinner, drinks, and tip, but it's well worth it to foodies. The service is impeccable and the food is amazing. It's become our fave neighborhood hangout, at least on the days we feel flush, but well worth it for a one-time dining experience. The chef did a "stage" (unpaid learning experience) at Noma in Copenhagen which is widely known as one of, if not the best restaurant in the world. It shows in his attention to detail, and his commitment to foraging for food in the Angeles forest. The wait staff is one of the best anywhere; friendly, approachable, and knowledgable. Can't ask for more than that."

  • "Good food-and service was knowledgeable and perfect Best-are the starters---would make an entire meal out of them---actually should---shared plates are delicious and inventive"

  • "This was a first date and everyone from the host staff to the wait staff were incredibly friendly, knowledgable, yet still professional. The food was fantastic, including the desert. Our reservation was for 8:30, (that's all that was available) but we wanted to meet earlier, so we got there at 7:00 - I asked the hostess if anything came up earlier could they possibly seat us. They didn't forget - and at a little after 8:00pm let us know a table was open if we'd like it - I was very impressed and my date really like everything about Girasol, as well."

  • "We've been to Girasol twice now and every time it is incredible. The service is incredibly on point and the food is delicious. Try the whole fried snapper and the Beets & Berries."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "With all the mixed reviews, we were lucky that we went on a good night. I suspect that when a restaurant changes its menu often based on 'farm to table', that there will be dishes that don't come out as well as the chef would like. Maybe best to stick to most signature dishes and only have a few different ones based on season for the specials."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "In a nutshell, I think the chef tries too hard to be creative and have unique items on the menu rather than focusing on taste. The braised lamb pretty much tasted like lamb without a comforting sauce and, braised lamb is a nice winter comfort food. The octopus salad was ok but not what it was cracked up to be. But most disturbing was a $2.50 "UP" charge on my bill. When I questioned this I was advised this is because when I ordered a martini, I mentioned the water that I wanted it "up" meaning in a martini glass and no ice, just as martinis should be served. This was a bit tacky since my bill two, including tip, was around $175.00. I will not recommend this restaurant to a friend and will not return."

  • "Second visit to the welcome addition to the neighborhood. I would like to see more menu choices but would go back just to have the bread and dessert with butter milk doughnuts. Delicious!"

  • "I loved the design of the place. We explained we had theater tickets and they were so attentive to our time comstraints. The menu was a litttle confusing, but the waitress explained it all to us very nicely. It was quite a different menu with exotic sounding ingredients. The shared plates were very small serving sizes but the entrees were a nice size and I left very satisfied. I had the braised lamb which was very nice. My companion had the pork chop and she didn't really comment more than it was fine. I thought it was just a bit pricey but would reccomend the place to try it for it's uniqueness in food combinations and freshness. It is not a place to have a quiet conversation as the noise level grew quite quickly with each new guest."

  • "I was very disappointed with the food and the waitress' recommendations. She suggested a duck confit as an appetizer for the two of us. The dish was a large piece of bread with lettuce and a few crumbs of duck. It was ridiculous and very awkward to share. Then she suggested a whole snapper as their signature dish. The fish was served on a small plate with no place to put the bones and no appropriate utensils. It wasn't particularly good and came with extremely salty fried vegetables. The final insult was the dessert with strawberries that had not been hulled and no knife provided to cut them. This restaurant is unfortunately all hype and not living up to its claims of fine dining experience. I will not try them again."

  • "It was our first time at Girasol. The restaurant decor is beautiful and the food delicious. We started with the octopus and pork satay. Both were amazing. Then we ordered the whole red snapper and roast lamb. Again, both were great. There are many starters and next time we will order more starters and share a meal. Service was excellent."

  • "Really wanted to love this place. It has a lot going for it. The problem is value and maybe attitude. It's too expensive for the small portion sizes. The food just misses that 'top chef' level. (maybe he was off on the Sunday we came.) Octopus salad, good, pears were not ripe and tasteless in that appetizer. Lamb entree was uninspired with questionable meat quality. Both fish dishes were pretty good. The wine list is subpar with basically no reasonably priced choices. Unless they change their outlook this looks like another valley flash in the pan. As Yogi says, "This place is so popular no goes there anymore.""

  • "Went to Girasol for brunch. We ordered the bread pudding french toast and the steak and eggs. Both were delicious! The bread pudding french toast was particularly good with the strawberry preserves on top. The crispy potatoes were a hit as was the house bread. I was really pleased with this meal, it's a great brunch option and it wasn't crowded which is always nice! Loved the decor of the restaurant too, it was really nice."

  • "This place keeps getting better and better. And now, my third time there, they have a full bar. The dishes are so unique in their preparation and ingredients that it's hard to choose! And all are absolutely delicious. Can't wait to go back. I can see this becoming one of our regular haunts."

  • "Our experience started as soon as we walked in. The swooped ceiling & textured walls transported us from the sleepy neighborhood where Girasol is located. We were greeted immediately by our server, Michaela, who gave us a thorough description of the menu & of how everything is sourced locally, & even foraged by the chef himself. We took her suggestions & were not disappointed. We had the Frog Hollow Pears Roasted in Forest Floor. Whhhaaattt?? Sounds like something from a Harry Potter movie, but in fact, had the perfect blend of sweetness from the pears, nuttiness & salt from the burrata, crunch from the crispy lentils, all enveloped in an earthy richness infused by the forest floor. Everything else we ordered was right on point too!"

  • "We were taken to this restauran about a month ago and were very impressed not only with the service, but the food as well, and how they managed our little nuances about substituting a veggie for another. They were very accommodating. So when it was my husband's birthday, he chose to come back to this restaurant and we were equally pleased. Definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "I walked in with high gastronomic expectations but the food, though different, was bland. The bread (you pay for) seemed underbaked. Nothing was exceptional. For the price, it should have been. I am the only person I know with negative feelings for Girasol so I guess there is something wrong with me (the whole rest of the world can't be wrong or is the emperor really not wearing any clothes)."
