A word from Giovanni's On The Hill
Classic Italian food served in a warm and elegant atmosphere are the hallmarks of Giovanni’s. Since opening 40 years ago, Giovanni’s friendly, attentive service reflects the exuberant personality and enthusiasm of the owner himself, Giovanni.

We offer a true dining experience that will make any meal a 'special occasion'. We also offer private rooms and banquet facilities for your special event needs.

“Giovanni’s on the Hill has always been the standard here for service, food and atmosphere,” says Joe Bonwich, restaurant critic for the St. Louis Post Dispatch. “It’s the whole package for high-end Italian dining: table side preparation, waiters in formal attire, a place to go for a memorable occasion. You don’t find those things much anymore.”

We booked this 15 minutes before arrival via Open Table and did not realize this was a fancy restaurant until we walked up. I went inside and spoke to the owner who was very gracious and told us "of course you can dine with us." A nice Italian couple own the restaurant and they truly make the place. Our waiter however was not friendly and at one point kicked my pocketbook under my chair saying he was going to trip on it. Well,he shouldn't have knocked it off the back of my chair!!!! He was even barking at other waitstaff within 3 feet of us making for an uncomfortable dinner. The food was fine- We will try this restaurant another time only because of the owners but they need to address the rudeness of the waiter.

Giovanni's is one of our favorite restaurants - food and quiet Had another waiter than in the past, he was so hard to understand accent and did not speak loud enough or clearly. don't know his name, very tall, slim, full head of grey hair If this was our first visit, not sure we would go back, he was that hard to understand.

I was a single dinner, seated in a corner next to a full family table that included a toddler. There were many open tables. Just across the way were to couples at individual tables that struck up a conversation that was loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear. While this is I hope an individual anomaly, the decor is beautiful, the Old house is beautiful inside. nearly art museum quality. Food was food, perhaps a bit pricey. I guess you are paying some for the name, (Oprah's Italian St. Louis Favorite - and they prepared meals for President Regan), and of course the 'stately' tuxedo-ed waiters.

Giovanni's old world charm, outstanding food and romantic ambiance lived up to its reputation. It was our first visit to the restaurant, but not the last! The eggplant appetizer was rich but light and perfectly flavored. We had the veal piccata and shrimp scampi and the veal was so tender, the sauces delicate and flavorful. Truly done to perfection. Ended with a signature dessert - a partially frozen cheesecake of sorts with strawberries and grand marnier that didn't disappoint! They topped it off with a complementary tasting of their homemade limoncello - wow!

This fine dining restaurant was confusing.A gentleman outside was eagerly trying to get people driving by to come to the restaurant, which seemed more appropriate for a fast food place!Upon arrival and in spite of the reservation for 2, they sat us at a table set for 4, then asked if others would join us and subsequently removed the extra place settings. The feel was very pretentious - Our waiter, while perfectly fine and respectful, was low energy and seemed as though he wished to be elsewhere. The food was very good - my husband loved the scallops that our waiter recommended as one of the specials. The wine selection was excellent and my pasta was very good. Would we return? Maybe, but we would try some other restaurants on The Hill first!

First no rail to help with the steps and while the waiter held open the door made no attempt to direct my companion who walks with a cane to any ramp or steps with a railing. I can not say that the pasta was particular fresh nor was the marinara sauce flavorful. The fish was a winner but some of the plates had the vegetables and others did not. A special order of spinach was never delivered. The cheesecake was light and very moist. Although not on the menu, we were offered the fried ravioli which was a treat, fresh and had a sufficient filling. Have to admit that the fried ravioli I had later in the stay was better. Giovanni's was more chewy. Wanted a St. Louis experience of eating Italian on The Hill and was not impressed

We were visiting in St Louis for the first time in a number of years, but remembered the good Italian dining "on the Hill." After reading about several restaurants in the magazine in our hotel, we pick Giovanni's. And were we glad! Excellent food, attentive service, and great ambience. Highly recommend this restaurant!

We were 8 people celebrating grad school graduation with our 3 adult children, and one grandparent. We requested a quiet corner and were given one. My mother in law loved her time there and could hear almost everything that was said at our table. Our wine, salad, soup, entrees, and desserts and coffee wer excellent. The service was professional and friendly. The steaks were perfectly cooked, and the semifreedo dessert was delectable. We had a wonderful time.

We went with a party of 7. The food was very good. The service was a little off compared to when I have been there in the past. It took about 10 minutes for our waiter to come by and ask if we wanted drinks. Service got a bit better, but not to the standard that they should have been.

Having moved away from St. Louis area over 17 years ago, we were excited to visit and return to The Hill for an outstanding meal! Giovanni's provided an outstanding dinning experience for my husband and I. After seeing all the wait staff in their tuxedo's, we were initially a little worried about the prices; however, after looking at the menu were relieved to see reasonable prices for the quality and choices of items. Everything tasted fabulous and the service was great. Our only suggestion is for them to have one or two nicer beer choices, such as local craft beers, for those like my husband that prefer a good quality beer instead of wine.

Second time here, first was on a groupon. Table of four, waiter volunteered to split a risotto course four ways as a pasta course. Salads split 2 ways. They made a custom not-on-menu cheese plate to go with our port. Overall a perfect evening. Love that place.

I can't really say anything bad about this restaurant. The food was quite good. The service was professional and very attentive. Personally however, the "feel" of the restaurant was just a bit "stuffy", for lack of a better word, and I didn't feel real comfortable dining here. If you like truly authentic Italian food, I'd say go. The restaurant just seems a bit pretentious for my taste.

Giovanni's is classic Italian dining at its best. Elegant but unpretentious, which is how it's supposed to be. We were greeted with a lovely "buona sera" at the door. Our bus boy was jovial; our waiter friendly but not intrusive, superb at his job. The menu is also classic, mostly Tuscan from what I remember. My date had the linguine with white clam sauce, I had the veal saltimbocca, with a requested side of pasta all'inglese. The saltimbocca is prepared stacked instead of rolled, but no matter. Both were delicious. We finished with hand made zabalione and double esspressos, mine with a shot of anisette, another classic touch. The wine list is varied and accessible, at least to my unpracticed eye; we chose a Wilamette Pinot Noir.

Even though the noise level was "quiet", it was not stuffy. The humor and expertise of the wqit staff was phenomenal. All four of us raved about our food choices. Unfortunately, I turned around long enough the next day for the dog to enjoy my leftovers! I was very disappointed since I was so looking forward to it a 2nd time. Since he is not normally a food stealer, I would say that it a pretty good endorsement! Ha! Thanks for a lovely dining experience! It was a perfect choice before attending a show at The Fox.

The restaurant is a bit small and cramped, which kind of makes for a less intimate experience. Other than that there was really nothing too bad about the ambience. My biggest problem was that the food was not good. I had a shrimp dish for my entree. The breading was burnt on one side and the shrimp was clearly overcooked. I just feel that a restaurant of this caliber (not to mention the prices they charge) should put out a better quality of food.

We waited 20 minutes just to tell them our names and we all had reservations. The restaurant is very outdated. While we were waiting, the one employee was talking rudely to one of the valets. Once we were seated, we were surprised at the good prices. We paid $10 for a small side salad that was supposed to have tomatoes, but only had half of a small cherry tomato. The dinners weren't cold, but the definitely weren't hot either.

Giovanni's is a nice restaurant in on the street corner in the middle of the neighborhood. Parking on the street if you can find it but don't worry, the valet can find it for you. A small cozy atmosphere with friendly faces. Small dining room that is crowded with small intimate tables. Although the space was small, I still felt alone with my date and we could talk in a normal voice. Even though there were a lot of dinner guests, it was not noisy. It was very pleasant. The food was very good and the wine selection was great. We had a very enjoyable evening at Giovanni's and would definitely return.

The wife and I went here for Valentine's Day dinner. It was a busy night; however, we got there at 6pm and had plenty of seating. By the time we left at 7:!5pm, it was packed. Reservations did not seem to matter as we heard the wait was up to an hour. Someone walked by begging we were at a table for four and we just said two. Just seemed a little understaffed if you cannot move people through that quickly. Food was good and service was good. I had the veal Marsala and the wife had the shrimp scampi. We split the calamari and fried zucchini appetizer. Again, we enjoyed the food and the service. Be careful on reservations!

It was very busy due to valentines day. Our waiter kept forgetting about us and we set for long periods of time without him checking on us. He was nice but, overwhelmed. The busboy was amazing!!! If it wasn't for him we would not of had drinks at all. The food was very good. So the experience was fine up unti the disturbing part of the night..... We used the valet parking and when we gave our claim ticket they could not find our car anywhere. The valet brought us sets of different keys asking if they were ours which they were not. After 15 minutes or so they found our car they had given it to someone else and they drove off in my NEW car, that I have had two weeks. I was thankful they brought it back but...... We had a great dining experience when we ate here. Their special, some pork and risotto dish whose name escapes me was tremendous. Their tiramisu was one of the best we've ever tasted!! There atmosphere is a bit strange and outdated. Seems they're holding on to their traditions too long. And when we ate there, it wasn't crowded. So I wish we wouldn't have been seated in the enclave, crammed next to the other table. But I digress. Overall a really good dinner.

My wife and i booked reservations for New Years for 8 oclock. We arrived and had to push our way up front to check in. We waited for 25 minutes to be seated. The restaurant offered a filet/lobster combo for the special. Needless to say, the main course did not include either. Instead we were given Salmon, which i am not a fan of, and some chuck steak. The steak was not flavorful and tough and the salmon was ok. We were told they ran out of filet and lobster which is crazy since we arrived at only 8 o'clock. The server was great and entertaining but we were not offered a discount on our meal. To top things off, they ran out of tiramisu, which is my wifes favorite dessert. Overall, not a good experience which ended in terrible substitutes.
