Diner Reviews
  • "Giovanni's lived up to the reviews. Outstanding seasonal menu with exceptional attention to detail. Lovely plating of unusual selections. Small glitch with the drink order that was remedied. Fair to poor wine selection and liquor selections but not an issue unless wine is critical to your evening. Suggest you may wish to bring your own selection and pay the corkage fee. This is a local gem."

  • "Its not a surprise the chef and his team and front of tye house got four stars from the NY Times. Delicious, clean, fresh, seasonal dishes created with thought and refined technique. Great experience. Will be back again and again"

  • "We were pleasantly surprised with Giovanni's! I love how the chef using near local ingredients and menus reflect seasonal findings. We enjoyed each course and the staff is helpful and responsive without hovering over you. Will be returning again and again."

  • "I was meeting a friend for dinner and wanted to find a place that would offer light, healthy food. This place was a real gem. I had the halibut with artichokes and capers. Simply delicious. My friend had the salmon with asparagus and beet purée. The fish was cooked perfectly and the beet purée devine. Our meal started with an amuse bouche of curried cauliflower soup. What a pleasant surprise! The only slightly negative comment is that the service felt a bit rushed. I hadn't seen my friend in over a year and wanted time to catch up and talk. That said, I would easily recommend this restaurant to any friends. Great find."

  • "It's about time we had a restaurant like this in the area. Interesting menu which changes. Lovely, helpful wait staff. Lunch menu is very tasty. A little pricey for dinner, but worth it for the service & ambiance."

  • "Everything about Giovanni's Berkeley Heights is just perfect. The servers are attentive, the food is of the highest quality and absolutely delicious. We're very fortunate to have this restaurant in our neighborhood."

  • "small neighborhood spot with interesting, diverse menu. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection, and we tried an array of dishes. Mixed greens with watermelon radish, Humboldt fog and pistachios was excellent (never knew there was a watermelon radish), and calamari special dusted in farina was outstanding! For dinner we had halibut with brussel sprouts and pecans over whipped sweet potato puree, which was excellent. We also had a sirloin flap (again, never heard of "the flap"), which was also excellent. Desserts looked amazing, but we were too stuffed. Nice sized portions, terrific service and fairly priced, this is a keeper for sure! 4.5 stars in our book. PS - cocktails very good, had an awesome old fashioned made with makers mark"

  • "The chef clearly knows what he/she is doing. But the great food experience was offset by a strange ambience that included bathroom-like décor (purple on top of lavender on top of lilac, plus wall to wall carpeting and cheap furniture/fixtures), a strange window showing a cook, the brightest lights of any public place I can recall, and in the corner, the dish area. It almost had too many servers (who were all very good), or probably because they had nowhere to hide. I never got comfortable. I also kept getting whiffs of deodorizer being sprayed, adding to the powder room atmosphere. Lots of potential because of the chef, but needs to be more of an experience for it to be worth these prices ($28 entrees/$16 apps/$10 wine)."

  • "The menu at Giovanni's changes with the season and the selections are interesting, diverse and delicious! The grilled pork chop was cooked to perfection, the lamb gnudi was delicious. The small portion was more then adequate, very filling! Desserts are divine, the affogato was great, gelato with expresso poured over it, and the zeppoli with dark chocolate sauce is not to be missed. The servers are attentive but not smothering. The dining room is very small, 10 tables. They can accommodate three groups of two in the bar area if you arrive without a reservation on the weekend."

  • "Aside from a most misleading name, Giovanni's Bistro, which is neither Italian nor a bistro, is a special find. The ambiance is lovely, the maître d' most professional and the food outstanding. While the chef doesn't reach out for highly unusual fare, each dish is well-conceived and delicious. We can't wait to return!"

  • "We made a last minute Rez for Giovanni's in Berkeley Heights because we had to pick up our daughter @ 10:30 nearby. We arrived late (9:25) and explained that we needed to leave by 10:15. I was not expecting much I will admit. We each had an appetizer & entree and shared a bottle of wine. The Tuna Tartare was quite good as was the Pork Chop and Gnocchi with Sage and Parmesan. We were out the door by 10:17 The only issue was the wine list needs to be updated. They were out of the Jordan Cab (at $80 per bottle I can see why) and the Cakebread Cab I ordered was a year later than listed. Nice job overall"

  • "We had a lovely meal, loved the mushroom soup, and my husband had the crab dumplings, which were terrific. We had steak and salmon for our entrees and they were really good. The dessert was delicious! Chocolate mousse in vanilla anglaise sauce macadamia crumbles, candied nuts just divine!!!"

  • "The food and the service were outstanding , from the moment we walked in till we left we were taken such good care of , the service is attentive without being over bearing , this is a fine dining restaurant and yet there is an aura of warmth and coziness all around . Or appetizers were delicious , the seared scallops , tuna tartar and the crab dumplings , served beautifully , with a nice break before the entrees were served , one never felt rushed , just totally relaxed. We had the Gnocchi to share , followed by the monk fish (delish) beef pot pie and the branzino ( sea bass ) all excellent , for each of us , we were a party of three ! We shared the Zeppole , quite amazing too !"

  • "I have been to Giovanni's many times. Each time has a been a wonderful experience. The ambience is inviting, the food outstanding, the service is very friendly. This time I was with 3 friends and we hadn't been together for a while. We stayed for a good hour after finishing our meal, and we were encouraged to stay as long as we like. (Of course, there were other tables available,so we knew nobody was waiting for our table.) I will be back again and again!"

  • "With a reservation, there was a possibility of seating at a very small bar which could be fun for 2-4 people. We chose the table and thus began a good dining experience with attentive servers from wine to dessert. All servers are extremely courteous and professionals. The scallop appetizer and the mozzarella salads were perfect, and the entrees of House Made past Bolognese and gnocchi with caramelized onions and mushrooms were indescribable. They have a fine wine list as well. The dessert was a carmel brownie which dripped a crazy sauce that just ended the meal in the best way. It was our third time there and will return often for a special weekend meal for 2-4 others."

  • "Food was amazing. The NY Times four star rating is well deserved. The servers were attentive amd very personable. The ambiance, while clean and simple, did not match the food. This is not an Italian restaurant and should not have lavender table cloths. My wife and I shared the Monkfish and short ribs."

  • "my husband I visited for our second time - it was his bday. he had the pork rillets appetizer - he said it was delicious - large portion, interesting flavor combo. He had the steak and ff for his main course - the steak was cooked to perfection and the fries are perfect - i "shared" them with him. I had the roast chicken (again) and it was better than the first time - great au jus, and I love the mashed potatoes. For dessert we shared a brulee, it was deliciious and came with biscotti that was giant and wonderful. Wine list is limited but the prices are very reasonable and you can find something delicious without breaking the bank. We are thrilled to have a place of this quality a mile fro the house and plan to visit often."

  • "My fiancee and I recently visited Giovanni's as we had read a very favorable review in the New York Times and we live right around the corner. The exterior is unassuming and the dining room is intimate with a small bar in the front. We were immediately greeted by staff, our coats were taken and we were ushered to our table. We shared the Seared Scallops appetizer. I had the Monkfish for my main course and she had the homemade Orecchiette. Both were absolutely delicious with the most tasty sides. We were so pleased we even ordered dessert, which we almost never do. Highly, highly recommend, our favorite local restaurant and we'd put this local gem up against any "City" hot spot."

  • "Service was superior. Can't remember when I was last treated like that Just when a thought came to mind on what I wanted. Someone appeared Atmosphere was very quiet and personal. Felt like we were the only people there Menu not overwhelming but excellent choices. Food is top notch"

  • "At long last the chef has added 2 new, warm appetizers to the menu. We enjoyed the tuna poke, interpreted w. Yuzu. The tuna was pristine. However recent personnel changes resulted in a substantial wait for our table, water glasses not being filled, the bread man coming late, dishes delivered to incorrect parties, etc. Whereas service previously flowed smoothly, it now is jerks, stutters and misses. We hope that the admirable service returns and we hope that the chef will now extend the entree menu which essentially remains the same."

  • "Went Thurs after Xmas. Great food. Dom was helpful and informative. Wow, food was superb. Will return. Wish the lighting was a bit lower. Very very bright! Atmosphere needs some work. Can be a very cozy restaurant if lights can be dimmer. Try the short ribs!"

  • "The restaurant was full & turning tables. On Saturday evening. In no small part this is due to the consistency of the cuisine and the warm, professional service of the staff. Dominic, the maître handles every detail from reservations & greeting to departure w cool aplomb. He remains calmly vigilant throughout the evening and is not reluctant to refill glasses, etc. Giovanni's presents a most pleasant evening. We hope to visit more frequently when the menu expands."

  • "What a pleasant suprise! The food was outstanding as was the service. Seafood fresh and interesting preparation. Somewhat pricey, but as a foodie, well worth it. Very tight seating in a small space. Decor somewhat 80's but don't let it fool you. Great dining experience."

  • "Hospitality is gracious & warm. Service is excellent. Food quality is very good and nicely plated. Obviously the kitchen has talents....however, if you want to dine here frequently you are thwarted by the rather limited menu. The amuse bouche (Brussels sprouts) is good but served since September, it is no longer 'amus'ing. The apps tend towards salads (all very good) but it is winter and the additional of several warm apps would be appreciated. The entree items are few and only the exact preparation is tweaked a bit. Additional entrees or weekly/daily specials would be a welcome additional Dessert menu is not enticing. So I would like to see this restaurant which I love grow a little now that it has found its feet."
