Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent food -- super fresh pasta and very good service. We were a group of 5 and we all enjoyed."

  • "food was soooo bad we had to get a second dinner later that night"

  • "This is my second time at Giovanni Rana. The food is excellent, and the service was great, but we waited a long time for our food. About a 45 minute wait. When the food finally came out, there was a good 10 minute wait for the last person to receive her meal. It was a tough call because we were all starving but didn't know if we should wait or not. To compensate, our server brought desserts to the table which was nice. I would go back but I was surprised by the slow kitchen."

  • "I always enjoy this place. Exceptional food and very 'soho' style interior. But they need to keep the restroom pristine clean. Yes it's a restaurant but the condition of the bathroom isn't match with the name and quality of the food. "

  • "Excellent fresh pasta options. Mostly great service (we had 1 bad server out of many). Went just for dinner - the host and our first waitress was very friendly and helpful. Wide array of dishes, including different fresh pastas, seafood and meat dishes and many different appetizers. Overall experience was great, would go back again... But would avoid some wait staff, as they were very slow and never checked on us."

  • "The touristy atmosphere at Chelsea Market contradicts the foodie scene, making me fear that Rana might not deliver; we were SO wrong! My mom declared it the best bolognese she's EVER had, and my squid ink linguini with lobster was spectacular. The cheese plate was delish, and I was impressed to have them ask us when we would want the pastas brought out so that they could time the kitchen perfectly. Cannot wait to go try more wonderful eats at Rana!"

  • "I found the food to be very good and pasta is without a doubt homemade and could def could have kept eating. The service was very fast, only 30 mins for 2 people on a Friday night. That being said, what would keep me from coming back was that it was $120 for 2 people yet the portions did not even come close to meeting that price scale. "

  • "I was really surprised at the quality of the food at Giovanni's. We had the beet fusillone and the broccoli rabe ravioli as well as a side of the caponata. Everything was delicious! The place is a bit crowded and noisy but the food makes up for that. "

  • "Call me a cynic and a curmudgeon - but I don't get the buzz over this restaurant. The space is typical post-industrial minimalism and the food is on the plus side of OK. I've dined there several times and keep hoping for that "holy cow" moment that never comes. If you want really good Italian - there are better places. "

  • "Loved this place!! the pasta was delicious and the wait service was also great. They have pasta for desert, which is super cool but we had tiramisu, it was AMAZING."

  • "They have a limited menu mostly to ravioli. The Squid linguini and Beet entree were not available. Two lower priced wines were also not available. I ordered the broccoli rabe with sausage ravioli. Very small bits of sausage and not much broccoli. No sauce to mention either. Bread was great. Crostini appetizer bread was hard as a rock! Rest rooms dirty."

  • "Whenever I have guests in town, this is one of my 'go to' places. The food, drinks, service and ambiance is always a hit! Then I nice walk through Chelsea Market to walk-off some of the deliciousness! I had family visiting this past weekend and they had seen a special dessert that was prepared for the Easter holiday season. While it was no longer on the menu, we asked about it and they made it for them. You always know how to make your guests feel special!!! "

  • "Five of us had a wonderful meal at this restaurant. Great ambiance, rustic woods and copper pots hanging from the ceiling for decor. Very lively, but authentic and warm at the same time. Service was fantastic. The Pasta is like none I have ever had before in my life. Everything from whole wheat to chocolate ravioli. Very creative, and innovative take on a traditional food. Even though we ate lots of pasta (could not resist, wanted to try a little bit of everything) we did not walk out feeling overstuffed. My two favorite were the pasta bolognese, and the chocolate ravioli for dessert."

  • "I love the setting of this restaurant -- from the fine linen napkins -- to the wood-hewn tables, it is a delight for the senses. Its location in the Chelsea Market (actually you enter from outside) is convenient and trendy. The food which includes many healthy options (e.g., fresh-made juices) is always delicious, though the portions are small. I've enjoyed the salads, soups and meat dishes -- all are excellent. Nice time, I will try the pasta which is their specialty. The service is prompt, but they can lose track of you after you get your plate. The place is noisy when the crowds descend, so try to get there early if you want to have a real conversation over your exceptional food. "

  • "Stumbled upon this restaurant, and it was a great find! Was in NYC for only 4 days and ate here twice. Everyone knows you could eat out every day in NYC and never eat at the same place twice. Well -- I would have eaten here everyday if I had found it sooner. Great food and an excellent wait staff. Very impressed!!"

  • "Not worth the price. The prices at Rana rival those at Babbo. There are so many restaurants in Manhattan that offer fresh pasta for half the price of Rana, that I just can't justify paying $25 a plate when I can get equally good pasta for $12 a plate. Just look at their takeout menu to see what their pasta SHOULD cost. Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed my meal very much, and I think Rana is a solid restaurant in every way; I just don't think it's twice as good as it's competition, and so I probably wont be going back unless I'm in the area and desperate to eat immediately. You'd do much better to just order their takeout and eat it up on the Highline!"

  • "When they first opened at Chelsea Mkt. it was fun, intresting, good food and service. Now its A step above Olive Garden. The food is salty or medicore at best.Executed poorly. Service was terrible. There really isnt much to say except it crashed and burned."

  • "This place is always a great bet when youre in the mood for Italian. It always delivers an authentic and fresh menu, and has a warm and inviting ambiance. Definitely one of my favorites in the neighborhood."

  • "Very mediocre Italian, nothing special and very expensive. And I lived in Italy. This is a chain restaurant there and is not highly regarded. It's not bad at all, but not very good, either."

  • "A group of 7 on Saturday night couldn't have been better. They had our table ready, offered great service, and the food was superior. Server helpful with suggestions of salads and desserts to share. Pastas are great, but raves for the perfectly prepared sea bass as well."

  • "If you think you know the best Italian restaurant in manhattan for pasta, I'm about to change your opinion... Giovanni Rana is by far the best! The massive-sized dining room is surprisingly intimate, and the staff is very attentive. The added bonus is their market in the back filled with a huge selection of fresh pasta for take-away! A great experience and a true find on the westside!"

  • "Every single dish served to our table was overwhelmingly oversalted."

  • "This place serves conventional Italian food. The service was exceptionally pleasant and helpful, but the food itself was just okay."

  • "The food is delicious here! And the setting is lovely and relaxed. I will definitely be coming back...the spinach ravioli is ridiculously good! Service is friendly and you don't feel rushed. Great spot to bring friends or a first date!"

  • "I came here with my boyfriend on Valentines Day and we absolutely LOVED this restaurant. Great appetizers and pasta entrees and fantastic desserts...the chocolate ravioli is to die for! The service was excellent and our waitress made a great wine recommendation that was perfect with my meal. We loved it so much we went to the fresh pasta shop to get some to make at home!"

  • "Our dinner was very good, we had been here before. Will come back again. However the only thing we didn't like was that the waiter asked us if we needed change. We often pay with a card, but since we had the cash we paid cash. We would have left a 25-30% tip easily if he did not ask that question. My husband is in the restaurant business & always tells his waiters to never ask that as it is a turn off. Maybe not for everyone."

  • "Mediocre service in this. Extremely busy place.waiter was friendly bit very unavailable. Polenta fries were just ok. Mussel and clam appetizer very small and unsatisfying. Sauce for fries costs $3 extra! Will not be going back."

  • "Food was authentic and very delicious. Very pleased with the service as well."

  • "I've never dined indoors, but the outside tables offer lots for the senses -- all the sounds, ambiance, and (slightly toned down) buzz of meatpacking district & vicinity. Quality, high-value food and imaginative drinks. Would certainly return."

  • "Overall service was excellent, food was good though portions were not plentiful, .a basket of fresh bread would have gone a long way!"

  • "The restaurant is vibrant, nicely decorated in a Italian style and the pasta is fresh, light, amazing! Definitely a must go."

  • "We loved our waitress, got seated right away, and the restaurant is beautiful and spacious. After we were told the pasta dish we wanted was not available, we decided on the Charcuterie plate to share. We were told it was huge / too much food for 2 ppl, but we really wanted to try it since we weren't getting the main pasta. The Charcuterie plate was just ok -- the amount of food was generous, just not interesting or pretty. The meat/cheeses were nothing great, just ok. It would've been nice to have something additional on the plate, such as grapes, olives, but it just looked like a pile of cold cuts and cheese chunks. The cheese they gave were not very varied either. We also got a broccoli rabe salad that was just ok (not very flavorful)."

  • "Went here for dinner with a friend. Waitress was a little spacey, didn't ask us if we wanted drinks and then waited until we asked about the fish of the day to tell us they were out. Once she took our order we NEVER SAW HER AGAIN. Different people brought out the food. We ordered the polpette to start which was pretty good but not very warm. I had the cappelletti al prosciutto which was good and my friend had the roasted breast of chicken which was also good. Overall the food is decent but not worth the price, drinks are way overpriced ($14 for a glass of wine?) and the service is pretty bad. We waited about 20 minutes after we were given dessert menus to finally flag someone down for the bill."

  • "We had a great time - I was surprised how busy it was. We had a friendly greeting and a short wait at the bar. Its a small place which gives it a quant ambiance without compromising on food. I will definitely go back. Warning - the menu us not easy to comprehend but they have put a 'glossary' at the back to help :) ENJOY"

  • "Restaurant is very "homey" lots of wood and hanging copper pots. Had delicious pumpkin soup (not creamy) and pumpkin ravioli - both superb and perfect for a cold night. Paired with a glass of hearty Italian red wine -yum! Right next to Chelsea market so you can go and shop after dinner. A great find."

  • "Casual atmosphere with authentic Italian cooking. We were there for Sunday brunch (limited menu) the bolognese was the best I've ever had. Simple and classic. The bruschetta with overeasy egg and beans was unique and yummy as well. We look forward to coming back."
