Diner Reviews
  • "Stumbled upon this restaurant, and it was a great find! Was in NYC for only 4 days and ate here twice. Everyone knows you could eat out every day in NYC and never eat at the same place twice. Well -- I would have eaten here everyday if I had found it sooner. Great food and an excellent wait staff. Very impressed!!"

  • "Not worth the price. The prices at Rana rival those at Babbo. There are so many restaurants in Manhattan that offer fresh pasta for half the price of Rana, that I just can't justify paying $25 a plate when I can get equally good pasta for $12 a plate. Just look at their takeout menu to see what their pasta SHOULD cost. Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed my meal very much, and I think Rana is a solid restaurant in every way; I just don't think it's twice as good as it's competition, and so I probably wont be going back unless I'm in the area and desperate to eat immediately. You'd do much better to just order their takeout and eat it up on the Highline!"

  • "When they first opened at Chelsea Mkt. it was fun, intresting, good food and service. Now its A step above Olive Garden. The food is salty or medicore at best.Executed poorly. Service was terrible. There really isnt much to say except it crashed and burned."

  • "This place is always a great bet when youre in the mood for Italian. It always delivers an authentic and fresh menu, and has a warm and inviting ambiance. Definitely one of my favorites in the neighborhood."

  • "Very mediocre Italian, nothing special and very expensive. And I lived in Italy. This is a chain restaurant there and is not highly regarded. It's not bad at all, but not very good, either."

  • "A group of 7 on Saturday night couldn't have been better. They had our table ready, offered great service, and the food was superior. Server helpful with suggestions of salads and desserts to share. Pastas are great, but raves for the perfectly prepared sea bass as well."

  • "If you think you know the best Italian restaurant in manhattan for pasta, I'm about to change your opinion... Giovanni Rana is by far the best! The massive-sized dining room is surprisingly intimate, and the staff is very attentive. The added bonus is their market in the back filled with a huge selection of fresh pasta for take-away! A great experience and a true find on the westside!"

  • "Every single dish served to our table was overwhelmingly oversalted."

  • "This place serves conventional Italian food. The service was exceptionally pleasant and helpful, but the food itself was just okay."

  • "The food is delicious here! And the setting is lovely and relaxed. I will definitely be coming back...the spinach ravioli is ridiculously good! Service is friendly and you don't feel rushed. Great spot to bring friends or a first date!"

  • "I came here with my boyfriend on Valentines Day and we absolutely LOVED this restaurant. Great appetizers and pasta entrees and fantastic desserts...the chocolate ravioli is to die for! The service was excellent and our waitress made a great wine recommendation that was perfect with my meal. We loved it so much we went to the fresh pasta shop to get some to make at home!"

  • "Our dinner was very good, we had been here before. Will come back again. However the only thing we didn't like was that the waiter asked us if we needed change. We often pay with a card, but since we had the cash we paid cash. We would have left a 25-30% tip easily if he did not ask that question. My husband is in the restaurant business & always tells his waiters to never ask that as it is a turn off. Maybe not for everyone."

  • "Mediocre service in this. Extremely busy place.waiter was friendly bit very unavailable. Polenta fries were just ok. Mussel and clam appetizer very small and unsatisfying. Sauce for fries costs $3 extra! Will not be going back."

  • "I've never dined indoors, but the outside tables offer lots for the senses -- all the sounds, ambiance, and (slightly toned down) buzz of meatpacking district & vicinity. Quality, high-value food and imaginative drinks. Would certainly return."

  • "The restaurant is vibrant, nicely decorated in a Italian style and the pasta is fresh, light, amazing! Definitely a must go."

  • "We loved our waitress, got seated right away, and the restaurant is beautiful and spacious. After we were told the pasta dish we wanted was not available, we decided on the Charcuterie plate to share. We were told it was huge / too much food for 2 ppl, but we really wanted to try it since we weren't getting the main pasta. The Charcuterie plate was just ok -- the amount of food was generous, just not interesting or pretty. The meat/cheeses were nothing great, just ok. It would've been nice to have something additional on the plate, such as grapes, olives, but it just looked like a pile of cold cuts and cheese chunks. The cheese they gave were not very varied either. We also got a broccoli rabe salad that was just ok (not very flavorful)."

  • "Went here for dinner with a friend. Waitress was a little spacey, didn't ask us if we wanted drinks and then waited until we asked about the fish of the day to tell us they were out. Once she took our order we NEVER SAW HER AGAIN. Different people brought out the food. We ordered the polpette to start which was pretty good but not very warm. I had the cappelletti al prosciutto which was good and my friend had the roasted breast of chicken which was also good. Overall the food is decent but not worth the price, drinks are way overpriced ($14 for a glass of wine?) and the service is pretty bad. We waited about 20 minutes after we were given dessert menus to finally flag someone down for the bill."

  • "We had a great time - I was surprised how busy it was. We had a friendly greeting and a short wait at the bar. Its a small place which gives it a quant ambiance without compromising on food. I will definitely go back. Warning - the menu us not easy to comprehend but they have put a 'glossary' at the back to help :) ENJOY"

  • "Restaurant is very "homey" lots of wood and hanging copper pots. Had delicious pumpkin soup (not creamy) and pumpkin ravioli - both superb and perfect for a cold night. Paired with a glass of hearty Italian red wine -yum! Right next to Chelsea market so you can go and shop after dinner. A great find."

  • "Casual atmosphere with authentic Italian cooking. We were there for Sunday brunch (limited menu) the bolognese was the best I've ever had. Simple and classic. The bruschetta with overeasy egg and beans was unique and yummy as well. We look forward to coming back."

  • "Really enjoyed the restaurant (although my favorite tap beer was out) AND no squid ink pasta (which was the whole reason we went)! Oh well, had to suffer through other amazing pasta dishes... Definitely would go back!"

  • "The food was good, however the portions were so small we each had to order an additional plate. Good ambiance but a rather touristy crowd. There are much better italian options in chelsea/meat packing. Not sure i would go back."

  • "We've dined here before and also had takeout. The food is consistently good, and the mgmt and wait staff are very attentive. (Except they forgot to check us in on Open Table! ) Unfortunately, the bus staff must have had too much espresso! As soon as you put down a fork or a glass, they scoop it up. We started keeping our hands on anything that was not completely finished! They also took away the plate of one of the diners while the other 2 were no where near finished. Very poor etiquette. We certainly were not lingering at the table, and there were empty spots available, so there is no excuse for such rushed service. (this was lunchtime) The staff needs some serious training so that guests are not forced to hang onto everything."

  • "Giovanni Rana is a very attractive but casual restaurant on 9th Avenue in the Chelsea Market and is famous for its pastas. We were promptly seated at the table we requested near the window and were served quickly and pleasantly. We had baby octopus (excellent) and salad (fine) to begin followed by two ravioli dishes, which are reputed to be the house specialty. Although there was nothing very wrong with the ravioli, it was not particularly flavorful and was probably a little over-buttered. Given that this is Rana's signature dish we were more than a little disappointed. The wine list is fresh and reasonably priced and we found a nice Montelpulciano. Total with dessert, coffee tax and tip was just over $100 which is reasonable."

  • "Menu options were very disappointing and limited. Although the pasta was good, most options were limited to a stuffed ravioli or tortellini. Most pasta options were served with sauces limited to butter and cheese. However, the bread came to the table with no butter or olive oil. The salads had little dressing and were bland and tasteless."

  • "This is the go-to place for the real deal when it comes to pasta and lots of complementary foods, many to be taken home. It's a hip place for people of any age, comfortably nestled into the great Chelsea Market. It's not touristy, though tourists would do a lot better here than at many of the overpriced Italian restaurants in the same 'hood. Contessa Francesca"

  • "eat here often,= we like it. This is 10th visit. Food good as ever. 1st time that Service & kitchen made several errors: asked for ground pepper & cheese--- guy brought cheese and salt grinder. Requests (twice) for same take time. after grinding and salting he pasta was the error realized. --- cuz another guy appeared with a pepper grinder (diff size grinder so we quickly realized there was an error). Pasta gracefully replaced. 2 of us ordered Taglia.Bolognese. Mine came with no meat; his with lots. His was the salted and cheesed one. On replacement, his had alot of meat. Clearly the kitchen originally did a double order and in serving i was shorted."

  • "Food and atmosphere were fantastic, but service is very spotty at the tables.... Took over 30 minutes to get our wine and at least 45 minutes to get our first course.... Then we got our meals very quickly after our appetizers... Also , my friend had to ask for water about 5 times before we got any... That said, the bartenders were fantastic, as we moved over there after our meal..."

  • "Second time eating here, the first time was a lunch and this last time was a dinner. Unfortunately the second time has been very disappointing. Nice waiter and antipasti but the pasta dishes that should be outstanding in this place were mediocre. Too expensive for the quality of the food. Also I suggest to the manager to do something to protect the people seating at the tables near the restaurant entrance from the cold air coming in when people get through the door. I am sorry but I will not go again, there are better italian restaurant in NY"

  • "Loved the pasta, ambiance and service were fantastic, and the chocolate fried ravioli was out of this world. Service was very fast and the menu was quite pricey ($100 for 2 people for a salad, 2 entrees and one dessert)."
