  • "My fiancé and I had walked by Gioia a number of times and heard several recommendations. We finally made it there on a Wednesday night around 7pm. If you plan to go much later than that I'd definitely make a reservation. There was a line out the door by 7:30. Had the Pizza Julian which was probably one of the best white pizzas I've ever had. Normally white pizzas leave me longing for sauce, but this one did not. The burrata appetizer was high quality burrata and perfectly cured prosciutto. The wine list was pretty extensive. I even recognized several wines I had while in Italy a couple summers ago. Overall great experience and lovely atmosphere. Reminded me of my favorite pizzeria in Rome!"

  • "We live in Berkeley and love Gioia's take-out pizzas, so decided to meet friends from the peninsula in SF at the restaurant there. Four of us all enjoyed what we ordered, but it took a very long time, 20 plus minutes for main course to arrive after our starters were cleared. away, and conversation was very difficult due to the din! Servers were friendly, pastas were done well, but one of our party wanted to add something to a pizza on the menu(and pay for it as an addition), and even though the ingredient was used on another kind of pizza there, he was told that the kitchen wouldn't put it on his pizza, that they don't like to change anything. This seemed arbitrary, since there are add-ons available."

  • "Music playing was very loud and grating, so much I was getting a headache while waiting for my friend. I asked for it to be lowered, but was ignored. Only 3 tables had customers, and I was seated next next to the other filled table. They asked for minor meal change and were turned down by the waiter. I could told the waiter I could not tolerate the music and had to leave. He said ok and I left without eating Note I did not eat here this, but had to place a star next to food to submit my comments"

  • "The hostess was sweet but when we walked in at 11am ( first ones in the restaurant) And with a reservation she was literally scratching her head as to where to seat us. That was just funny! But anyway we were the first ones and when our food finally arrived Bit by bit my husband still didn't have his dish and now most of the restaurant was Full with tables filled with food. Our waiter didn't even apologize - not a bit for obviously The ticket got lost. Anyway the place is cute and food tasty ( when or if you get it that is)."

  • "One of our most favorite walk-up spots in Berkeley so when we heard about the SF location, we wondered how he could keep the direct and delicious flavor in a sit-down restaurant setting. He has. II thought it would be "fancier". Gioia retains the rustic nature of his wonderful flavors in the sit down style. Our potato-pancetta pizza was fantastic as was the caesar salad using chicory and fried anchovies!! Fabulous. Great fries too--our appetizer course!! BTW: Wednesday is burger night and this burger with chuck, brisket and short rib was so good that when the server described it, i asked if it could just be put on a cheese pizza. Alas, no, but we got it anyway and just split it up. Great group of people, great place. Highly recommended."

  • "For me, pizza is about crust and sauce, everything else is extra. Gioia nails it every time. Their sauce, made from vine ripened San Marzano tomatoes is to die for! Get's me every time. The service is fantastic, always great wine pairing recommendations with a smile. Go here if you haven't, you'll love it."

It was all fresh and tasty Ordered the roasted veggies because they were so good-- and I'm not crazy about roasted veggies! The Julian pizza was my favorite. We were visiting SF, but will go back when I can"

  • "Pizza crusts very thin very tasty with terrific texture. perfectly balanced fillings - don't forget extra garlic.. We get 3 small plates With a small pizza and share for two. homemade lemon juice not too sweet The food is delicious. Big flavors good textures, leaves you satisfied. chefs got it right: mix & flavor, quality = very good. heathy as well, We went to three restaurants in a row over thanksgiving 2013 this meal cost the least and their food was the best by far. What a treat . The small plates can satisfy 4 people if you order about 5 plus a pizza.and will leave you very content. You won't get that cheap cooking oil feeling blahs here . Really need to try their octopus and pasta I bet it will be a treat. Quality quality quality"

  • "Friends of ours suggested this place and we were keen to try a new place with our children, who, while not toddlers, are still discerning (somewhat picky at times!) diners. We enjoyed the arugula and proscuitto pizza, fritto of mixed vegetables (cauliflower, acorn squash, broccoli and pomegranate seeds in a yogurt sauce), and the spaghetti with octopus, fennel, and chickpeas, and we ordered a kids pasta for the pickiest child. Because it was a Friday night, I'm glad i made a reservation thru Open Table. By 7pm, it was full, noisy and it looked as if everyone was having a really good time. Service was great - our server was knowledgeable of the wine list, was patient and checked in on us several times. A return visit is in order!"

  • "The food at Gioia is very good - pizzas and pastas with fresh ingredients and unique flavor combinations. The ambiance is also great for a neighborhood spot. Lively but relaxed, great for a casual dinner with friends. The service however, was very uneven. We were seated almost 30 minutes late for our reservation, and the wait staff seemed stretched and were attentive in spurts, but not consistently. Not great for a relaxed Sunday evening dinner."

  • "I was finally able to give Gioia a try and now I'm wondering why I waited so long. Even though I messed up our reservation time (we arrived 1/2hr late), they were very accommodating and gave us a great table in the window fairly quickly (the restaurant was packed on this Wednesday night). Our server was very friendly and enthusiastic and the food was amazing! The heirloom tomato salad was so fresh and delicious and the pizza was fantastic. We all love the crust. I can't wait to return!"

  • "Brunch, lunch, or dinner, Gioia never fails to deliver a delicious dining experience. Service can be really spotty, but the food more than makes up for any waiting. Be sure to go hungry, because you'll want to order one of everything!"
