Great spot for an informal but
unique dining experience. Food was different but very well presented and had great flavor. Would definitely go back as the menu was varied and offered choices for all tastes and restrictions."

Music playing was very loud and
grating, so much I was getting a headache while waiting for my friend. I asked for it to be lowered, but was ignored. Only 3 tables had customers, and I was seated next next to the other filled table. They asked for minor meal change and were turned down by the waiter. I could told the waiter I could not tolerate the music and had to leave. He said ok and I left without eating Note I did not eat here this, but had to place a star next to food to submit my comments"

Great pizza! Ask about specials -
few months ago they had figs and blue cheese - awesome! Pretty good beer selection on tap. Make reservations - they fill up quickly!"

i have been to this one several
times and will still return. think it started 2-3 years ago. my memory is faulty nowadays. it just amazes me the casual food they serve is absolutely delicious!"

The hostess was sweet but when we
walked in at 11am ( first ones in the restaurant) And with a reservation she was literally scratching her head as to where to seat us. That was just funny! But anyway we were the first ones and when our food finally arrived Bit by bit my husband still didn't have his dish and now most of the restaurant was Full with tables filled with food. Our waiter didn't even apologize - not a bit for obviously The ticket got lost. Anyway the place is cute and food tasty ( when or if you get it that is)."

We love everything about Gioia,
the food, service and the atmosphere"

Ok,Pizza was a lot different than
traditional Neapolitan, thicker and no real crumb in the dough, more like a de Mae crunchy bread...but still good!"

One of our most favorite walk-up
spots in Berkeley so when we heard about the SF location, we wondered how he could keep the direct and delicious flavor in a sit-down restaurant setting. He has. II thought it would be "fancier". Gioia retains the rustic nature of his wonderful flavors in the sit down style. Our potato-pancetta pizza was fantastic as was the caesar salad using chicory and fried anchovies!! Fabulous. Great fries too--our appetizer course!! BTW: Wednesday is burger night and this burger with chuck, brisket and short rib was so good that when the server described it, i asked if it could just be put on a cheese pizza. Alas, no, but we got it anyway and just split it up. Great group of people, great place. Highly recommended."

We were able to come in when we
wanted, and had a solid meal. It was a positive experience and I would definitely go back."

For me, pizza is about crust and
sauce, everything else is extra. Gioia nails it every time. Their sauce, made from vine ripened San Marzano tomatoes is to die for! Get's me every time. The service is fantastic, always great wine pairing recommendations with a smile. Go here if you haven't, you'll love it."

In a nutshell: fresh ingredients
in very capable and professional hands lead to excellent food. Some minor complaints: staff sometimes inattentive and the space if cold (temperature.)"
Dined on 12/28/2013
Great pizza, waitress and
atmosphere . Wish the tables weren't squeezed so tight together. Overall great experience."
Dined on 12/26/2013
the food is so good here, the
salads change with the seasons, the pastas are very good, and absolutely love the pizzas!"
Dined on 11/27/2013
Excellent food in a casual
setting. Server was positive, energetic, and responsive Had lots is appetizers in addition to the pizza and pasta. It was all fresh and tasty Ordered the roasted veggies because they were so good-- and I'm not crazy about roasted veggies! The Julian pizza was my favorite. We were visiting SF, but will go back when I can"

Pizza crusts very thin very tasty
with terrific texture. perfectly balanced fillings - don't forget extra garlic.. We get 3 small plates With a small pizza and share for two. homemade lemon juice not too sweet The food is delicious. Big flavors good textures, leaves you satisfied. chefs got it right: mix & flavor, quality = very good. heathy as well, We went to three restaurants in a row over thanksgiving 2013 this meal cost the least and their food was the best by far. What a treat . The small plates can satisfy 4 people if you order about 5 plus a pizza.and will leave you very content. You won't get that cheap cooking oil feeling blahs here . Really need to try their octopus and pasta I bet it will be a treat. Quality quality quality"

Friends of ours suggested this
place and we were keen to try a new place with our children, who, while not toddlers, are still discerning (somewhat picky at times!) diners. We enjoyed the arugula and proscuitto pizza, fritto of mixed vegetables (cauliflower, acorn squash, broccoli and pomegranate seeds in a yogurt sauce), and the spaghetti with octopus, fennel, and chickpeas, and we ordered a kids pasta for the pickiest child. Because it was a Friday night, I'm glad i made a reservation thru Open Table. By 7pm, it was full, noisy and it looked as if everyone was having a really good time. Service was great - our server was knowledgeable of the wine list, was patient and checked in on us several times. A return visit is in order!"

Great place to grab a delicious
pizza and a nice glass of wine."

Great pizza, one of my favorites,
friendly service. Had our table ready the second we walked in. Super loud inside for me but that's just a personal preference."
Dined on 10/31/2013
The food at Gioia is very good -
pizzas and pastas with fresh ingredients and unique flavor combinations. The ambiance is also great for a neighborhood spot. Lively but relaxed, great for a casual dinner with friends. The service however, was very uneven. We were seated almost 30 minutes late for our reservation, and the wait staff seemed stretched and were attentive in spurts, but not consistently. Not great for a relaxed Sunday evening dinner."
Dined on 10/28/2013
I was finally able to give Gioia a
try and now I'm wondering why I waited so long. Even though I messed up our reservation time (we arrived 1/2hr late), they were very accommodating and gave us a great table in the window fairly quickly (the restaurant was packed on this Wednesday night). Our server was very friendly and enthusiastic and the food was amazing! The heirloom tomato salad was so fresh and delicious and the pizza was fantastic. We all love the crust. I can't wait to return!"
Dined on 10/24/2013
I really enjoyed the salads,
pastas and pizza at Gioia so I'd definitely return. I found the pours on the wine a little light."
Dined on 9/27/2013
Lots of families even at 7pm.
Waited a Long time for wait staff to even say hello. Got served drinks and appitizers then wrong waiter brought drinks to wrong table. They seemed so disorganized. Wait staff had to come back and ask what we ordered since she forgot. Place mellows by 9 but extremely loud for conversation. I will do take out next time"

Some reviewers have noted how long
it takes to get your food (45 minutes from time of ordering). It's hard for me to knock the restaurant for this ... good, "slow food" (from scratch dough, scratch sauce, baking) pizza takes time and the pizza is delicious and reflects the time it takes to make it this good. Service was fine so the food time reflects a busy restaurant with full ovens and not slow service. Great place for kids, it was half families when we went (we have a 6 year old) so order some bread or salad for the kids to bridge them to pizza."

This is my third time eating here
and the pizza is inventive and delicious. Great service as well."

08/27/13: I had a reservation for
8pm, was noted seated until 8.30pm with numerous groups sat before us."
Dined on 8/28/2013
Fantastic service. The flavors of
the pizzas are great; just wish the crust was a little crisper."
Dined on 8/26/2013
Excellent pizzas. music is too
loud and not conducive to talking and enjoying the meal!"
Dined on 8/8/2013
The food here is delicious. I have
had almost all the salads and they are wonderful. At lunch you can have a "sando" and currently it is fried fish or chicken parm. You can even order just a slice of pizza. At night you must get a whole pizza and the choices are good. They also have some pastas on the menu along with a couple of entries. My only complaint is that they keep changing the menu and eliminating the best items!"
Dined on 8/10/2013
After a lengthy discussion with my
server about my food allergies, my entree came out covered in thing I am most allergic to. He happily took it back to the kitchen. My entree re-appeared 45 or 50 minutes later. My dining companion was long past finished. We watched eat other eat which is not as erotic as it sounds. I won't be returning."
Dined on 8/3/2013
I love the food at Gioia (at both
locations). But their Polk Street location's service and kitchen have consistently failed to deliver food in a timely manner whenever we dine in for lunch or dinner. We've averaged a 45-min to an hour wait for our first dish or pizza. Gioia will be our go-to take out for pizza but we can't dine in anymore."
Dined on 7/28/2013
We recently moved to Russian Hill
an have made Gioia our new go-to for dinner AND brunch. The food is soooo good and the people make us feel at home. Great salads and pasta and of course pizza. Oh, the burger is simple but our new favorite in the city."
Dined on 7/27/2013
One of those rare places where the
food far exceeds expectations in a family friendly, casual atmosphere. The pizza is the best we've ever had, and every item on the dinner menu (which changes frequently) is a winner. Luckiest are those that live in the neighborhood, we drive from the East Bay and do so gladly."
Dined on 7/29/2013
Brunch, lunch, or dinner, Gioia
never fails to deliver a delicious dining experience. Service can be really spotty, but the food more than makes up for any waiting. Be sure to go hungry, because you'll want to order one of everything!"
Dined on 7/21/2013
I went to Gioia on a Saturday
evening. We had 8:15 reservations, but were not seated until 8:50. The hostess brought us drinks while we were waiting, but thy were not comped as I would have expected given the delay. The pizza is good, and I always enjoy the meatballs. If the hostess had not checked on us a few times, we probably would have waited much longer to order, and receive out food."
Dined on 7/21/2013
While the pizza is amazing (we had
the mushroom with added prosciutto - the crust, sauce and toppings were perfectly harmonized-- it's kind of like a combo between a fire oven pizzas and New York style pizza-- a truly awesome experience -- you must try one), other items on the menu are fantastic and illustrate the amazing skills of the kitchen. We shared a starter of the kale and chickpea fritters perfectly married with a yogurt sauce and fired mint leaves -- again, amazing flavor combinations; and also had the rigatonitti with pork ragu and eggplant -- a rustic dish with perfect balances of fatty, briny, toothsome yumminess. Servers were welcoming and overall awesome. Nice beer and wine selections. We will definitely be back!!"
Dined on 7/18/2013
There isn't a huge menu here like
there are at some other restaurants, but what's there is delicious. Great for sharing salads and pizzas. It was loud when we were there on a Tuesday night, so be prepared to strain a bit if you're seated in the middle of the restaurant."
Dined on 6/19/2013
I've been to Gioia before for
dinner and it was good which is why I recommended it for a work lunch. The food was very good as always but the service was horrible and embarrassing . We were a party of 7 and I had made the reservation a month in advance. Besides the kitchen staff there was only 1 person working the entire dining room and he had no hustle at all. We waited at least 45 minutes before our order was taken. Our food was not brought out at the same time, we were nearly done with the meal when our last pizza was put on the table. Overall, the food was good but I'm not sure I'll be back due to the service."
Dined on 6/14/2013
Excellent pizzas, brunch menu, and
salads. The salad and fritta was a great combination to share! As for pizza, the flavour just explodes with freshness. The kitchen is very capable producing such good food. We enjoy it and sorry it is closed Monday's and not open late at night but perfectly understand the hours they keep. It is a "joy"."

Can't stay away! It only gets
better. Please bring back arancini."
