A word from Gilt Bar
A bunch of fine dining chefs and wine directors got together to create a casual restaurant that is inclusive and void of excess. The idea was to bring people together who are set on having a great night out surrounded by quality food (presented in a simple fashion), craft cocktails, beers and wine list focused on best value for the $'s.

Reservations made through Open Table will be for Gilt Bar's main dining room. If you would like to dine in our Library please call the restaurant after 2pm.

  • "Love this place. We had an amazing server. We changed our dessert order twice (oops...) and they brought us the wrong dessert. We didn't even say anything but then three different people apologized and they brought us an additional dessert. Only thing is that this restaurant is very loud. We were almost shouting at each other and had quite a few --"What?? What did you say?""

  • "Steak tartare is fantastic! Disappointed in arugula/apple salad. If making a reservation, be certain to indicate seating preference. Very surprised our party of 2 was seated in an almost empty restaurant directly next to a party of 3 in the bar area. Had too request being moved twice. Server was very attentive and friendly."

  • "First floor/bar too loud for us to enjoy dinner and conversations. But we really enjoyed the library / club downstairs. Menu short but we all found something we liked. My half order of walleye was a but skimpy relative to the other half orders. We'll be back"

  • "While we enjoyed our experience, the service fell far short of our expectations. The food and ambiance were both incredible but our server could have cared less that we were there and we felt like an imposition. Too bad."

  • "This was our second dine at Gilt bar. We are from out of town but love this gem. We had a wonderful time! We went with another couple and we arrived about 45 minutes earlier than our reservation and were able to be seated right away. The food was very delicous! We did not care for our waiter but the service was still good, not great."

  • "Although I find the hostesses/hosts to be overally self important and attitudinal. Although this is a fun place to see and be seen - it's a little loud and too tightly packed for after work meetings to be productive."

  • "Haved dined at Gilt Bar twice and both times have had a nonchalant, uninterested waiter. Had to ask for a drink after waiting 10 minutes at our table. Our table of 4 all wished to order one of the many specialty drinks listed on the menu and when asked for the waiters recommendations, he stood there and said "why don't you go ask the bartender for answers." With that, we order simple cocktails and food. Our choice of appetizers were delicious. Our waiter never returned to ask if we needed another drink or anything else to eat. We asked for our check and left. Never we go back, especially since this has happened twice now."

  • "I went to Gilt for my pre-birthday celebration after reading about the trendy hot spot in chicago magazine. I was nervous that it would be more trendy than actual good food but it wasn't! The food was fantastic. I had the seasonal salad with goat cheese- perfect balance of acid, pepper and creaminess. I also had the salmon with a side of roasted cauliflower. The salmon was cooked to perfection - Crispy on top, medium rare in the middle and perfectly seasoned. The cauliflower had pickled onions and capers that perfectly balanced out the "dullness" of cauliflower and making it a superb side to my salmon. The service is interesting- the waiters and runners appear when you want them to but don't linger. All in all fantastic. Thank you!"

  • "Thumbs up to Klaus, our waiter. He was attentive and gave great advice as to our order. We had the truffle pasta (Must-have!!), the meatballs (yum!) and the brocoli with pecorino and lemon (delicious!). Would go back in a heartbeat! It's romantic, the atmosphere is great and it's definitely a trendy spot to be!"

  • "Very memorable, delicious, enjoyable dining experience. Met a childhood friend who we haven't seen each other for 15 years. We asked for a quiet table to talk and catch up and were brought to the library downstairs. It was an incredibility beautiful room - warm and inviting. Like an old speakeasy. The service was impeccable the food fresh and flavorful. I highly recommend this neighborhood gem near the Chicago Merchandise Mart"

  • "I am a huge fan of gilt bar! rarely do I repeat restaurants in Chicago since we have so many fantastic places to choose from!~ but the food ambiance and drinks keep me coming back! The staff is very educated on the menu and can offer you great suggestions depending on your tastes. Personally I love the steak tartare and the frois gras. The fries are a great side. Any salad that I have had are also very delish!"

  • "I made a reservation here, strictly on what I saw through Yelp, and was not disappointed. Although, to reserve a table downstairs in The Library, which is a very cool basement bar/lounge, you need to call instead of reserve online. I think because that seating is limited. Get the potatoes. Incredible."

  • "Have been trying to been reservation here for a while given the rave reviews and was finally able to secure one early evening on Father's Day. What a treat! Every single dish was outstanding. The burrata and sliced ham on toast made me feel like I was back in Italy. The same goes for the pasta with black truffles. The pork belly melted in your mouth, but what really surprised us was the boneless grilled chicken. It bursted with flavor and the side of mash potatoes with chicken jus was a perfect pairing. Lastly, the home made chocolate pie was perfect - not too dense, not too loose, not too sweet. Insane. Cannot wait to go back and gorge."

  • "Gilt Bar was recommended to us by a local friend and we were super impressed...right up until the end, when, after a very long wait...we had to finally take our check up to our waitress who was sitting at the bar chatting with the bar tender and other waitstaff. (It didn't help that we could see her clearly not busy.) At that point...an apology for forgetting to come get our cc would have been in order...but she did not acknowledge that we had been sitting there waiting with check and cc in hand for 15-10 minutes. Not sure what was going on there. Sorry to end a very nice evening with exceptional food on a negative note."

  • "Love Gilt Bar...and love introducing new people to the restaurant as well. Came in on a Saturday night...it was busy/lively. We had a 10pm reso and we sat right away. Our server was Nicklaus, and he did a phenomenal job...very personable and knowledgeable about the menu...would definitely request him next time. Steak Tartare is best in the city...hands down. Love that they serve sriracha on the side. Nice salads, awesome mussels...I can drink that sauce by spoonfuls. Desserts are outstanding...best coffee ice cream I ever had. Drink program is amazing...Martinez is my drink of choice and they always execute it perfectly. Will definitely be coming back soon...and hopefully introducing new people as well."

  • "A group of four dined on a Friday night, sitting at a table towards the back of the restaurant. The food was unbelievably good (we split a number of appetizers and each person ordered a main course)!"

  • "Our first time there (celebrating our civil union "upgrade" to marriage). We were told to ask to sit in the Library. It was perfect. Quaint, mysterious, romantic, and quieter than upstairs. We felt as if taking a trip downstairs had transported us to another location. The bar tender was also our server and we loved the ability to talk cocktails with him as he brought out new orders. The service, food and ambiance all made for a fantastic evening! Favorites form the menu were the bone marrow and the gnocchi. We will return many more times."

  • "Great, vibrant restaurant. Came with a shout out from a top chef in Chi-town. Great service and server... only oddity was for such a trendy restaurant, they ran out of STEAK by 7:30pm, being one of the signature dishes... Murphy obviously lives everywhere or the food manage was asleep at the wheel. Definitely will go back..."

  • "I was going to give 2 stars, but since Gilt Bar is on the brink of being much better, it's gets 3. A couple of corrections could have mad our meal excellent. The Negroni was excellent. The food, over salted and came out cold. In NYC this meal may have been 25% more at least, so that's a plus."

  • "Gilt Bar is hands down one of the best restaurants in Chicago. From the ambiance to the service, to the impeccable menu, I've never been disappointed. My boyfriend and I were originally being seated at one of the non-booth tables in the main dining area. I asked if it'd be possible to switch to the half-booths on the side, and our hostess was so kind as to get us a booth in the downstairs library area, which was fantastic. The food was fantastic. We ordered the balsamic & garlic toast, mussels entree, octopus entree, and orecchiette pasta--all delicious. The apple cake for dessert was the icing on the cake. We'll definitely be back again!"

  • "Great food and great service. We started off with the steak tartare which literally melted in our mouths. I had the gnocchi and my husband had the pork belly. Both were great, but I wish I had my husband's pork belly all for myself! The side of mashed potatoes was creamy, buttery, and had the right amount of saltiness with the au jus. It was a bit dark in the restaurant, but aside from that, we had a great experience and would highly recommend to anyone in the Chicago area!"

  • " Our server took awhile to greet the table to get our dinner moving along... always noticeable. Describing the menu was an unrehearsed mess, basically you can mix this and that or have your own or you can do it sort of any way you want. OK. Fine. Disappeared again. Reappeared after too long. Finally I noticed that the server was taking tables outside too. Perhaps spread too thin. Pleasant when he was present, but maybe inexperienced? Chicken main course was quite enjoyable -although extremely heavy on the salt. Salmon nice. Apple Salad was great. Ceasar was fine."

  • "The food was very good, and the drinks were excellent. We had decanted a bottle of wine – free if you share a glass with another table, which is a great policy – but our first two course came way too quickly, especially given how slow the restaurant was and how few tables our server seemed to be waiting on. She insisted on taking our entire order at once, took a menu out of my hands, and had our second course arrive before we'd finished our cocktails (in which case, why did we even bring wine?), then forgot to order one of our sides (which she admitted was her fault). But then she also forgot our second coffee, which became pointless since we'd finished dessert. She was flustered and unprofessional, surprising for a place as hyped as this. "

  • "I had dinner at Gilt Bar on a Sunday night at around 8:45. We ordered the bone marrow, foie gras, salad, roasted salmon and orechiette. My dad wanted the steak but it was sold out. The bone marrow and foie gras was my favorite. The salad (i think it had apples in it) was ok. The orechiette was ok but there was too much oil in it for me. I could have done without the salmon. I love capers but the whole dish was overcooked and there wasn't anything special about it. We also ordered a few drinks off the cocktail menu and they were good. The staff was friendly but everything just took a long time. My recommendation is to just stick with the appetizers."

  • "For a recent after-work meeting, I met a client at Gilt. Having been here before, I thought it would be a convenient place to meet on a Tuesday night. When we arrived the place was empty, save for the bar & one other table. However, when another person joined our party, the hostess was insisting we switch tables. At the time, the restaurant was empty save for two other tables. When asked if we could simply move to the table next to us as we had been served food, we were told it was reserved. Leaving 90 minutes later, no one else showed up for the table, or Gilt Bar. Clearly, the hostess station had too much time on their hands to harass customers. At that price point, for a business meeting, you can clearly do better. I certainly will. "

  • "This is my third time at Gilt Bar in the past two years; each time I've been, my impression is that it has gotten more mediocre with age. The service is consistently sub-par for a restaurant in its price range, and the food, which I remember really enjoying the first time I went, is no longer spectacular. Maybe I'm just older and more cynical, or maybe there are too many other great places in the Chicago restaurant scene, but I don't think I will be going back any time soon."

  • "Gilt is delicious. They have live jazz in the cellar, which is very cosy. The bartender down there served me on my last visit, and she was excellent. She even got me to try something by saying she would buy it if I didn't like it! Service last week was not as good. The dishes are made to share and the server had us order too much food. "

  • "Great neighborhood bar and restaurant with an awesome, dark lighting concept - perfect for first dates. Only drawback: the chef decided to use pounds of salt in all of our food. Bone marrow toast, burrito ham toast, other toast and chips - everything was way too salty. Unfortunate, because we enjoyed everything else about Gilt."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner here SO much. It was the highlight of our Chicago trip. Excellent service, very vibrant, busy restaurant (even on a Monday night). We shared foie gras, a beautiful steak, delicious mashed potatoes, yummy mushrooms. Everything was just delicious. Our server helped us with our choices and he was spot on. We would highly recommend the Gilt Bar."

  • "My husband and I visit Gilt Bar every time we are in Chicago. He's a picky beer snob and I love good wine, and this place pleases us both every time. The food is always amazing - we order something new each visit. The salmon I had this weekend was by far the best fish I have ever eaten, and we live in Miami. We can't recommend this place enough - get there and enjoy!"

  • "Great food! Loved the steak tartare as an appetizer, was a great split between four people. Can't wait to go back to try the bone marrow. The atmosphere was nice, noise but easy to keep up conversation. Drinks were decent had the Paloma (tastes like a margarita) and the gin daise (too sweet) Overall, great food- awesome atmosphere. Very comfortable and hip. "
