A word from Gigi's Cucina Povera
Gigi's Cucina Povera is an Italian restaurant in Buffalo, NY. In our "poor kitchen" the philosophy is simple: Make great food with fresh, local and seasonal ingredients, transforming the simple into more than the sum of its parts. Our menu includes Sicilian comfort food and peasant-style fare like pasta dishes, risotto-based dishes, seafood, and slow cooked meats. Daily specials feature fresh, local produce.

Gigi's is owned and operated by Mary Ann Giordano. Chef Giordano has competed in many regional cooking competitions and has authored a cookbook, "The Saint Joseph's Day Table Cookbook," along with her father.

Gigi's Cucina Povera is open daily at 5 p.m., Sundays at 4 p.m. On Sundays, we feature family-style meals. Come and experience great food in a Sicilian country atmosphere.

Diner Reviews
  • "Gigi's was highly recommended by a foodie friend. The appetizers were very good. The entrees were ok. My broiled cod was very good, but the pasta dishes ordered by three guests were without much flavor and were not enjoyable. It was a disappointment to our group."

  • "Excellent once again! I can't get enough of the lamb appetizer, which I eat as my meal with a house salad! The flavor of the lamb and it's accompanied polenta is extraordinary. It is cooked perfectly every time. I am continually impressed by the food and service at GiGi's."

  • "The food was good. Clams casino were very good. Pasta was cooked perfectly with a nice sauce (I had the sauce with sambuca in it). Service was excellent. Our waitress was delightful and very knowledgeable. We went after a heavy rain, and the restaurant had a mildew odor. It is a neighborhood gem."

  • "We love this restaurant! I'm half Sicilian and half Napoleton and have been to Siciky & Italy a few times. the dishes are made from the traditional recipes and are what you would expect from Siciily. We enjoy everything from the savory mussels and tripe cooked perfectly to the delicious deserts. They have wonderful dinner sized salads if you're counting calories too. And of course the pasta! "

  • "The bread was delicious and fresh with hummus and olive oil. Usually, when ordering a dinner, I assumed you began with a salad, but none was offered. "

  • "It wasn't the fastest service but the food was delicious and the staff was so friendly that we didn't mind. Great options, affordable, fun. I will definitely go again!"

  • "While the atmosphere & service were certainly pleasant enough I was somewhat disappointed in the food. The menu descriptions sound awesome but I felt in reality the food was on the bland side. The half portion opttions for pasta dishes were nice but the food definitely could use more herbs & spices. "

  • "While this is called 'Povera' for poor kitchen it is a wonderfully richly artistic kitchen -- an art povera! I took friends from NYC who are also foodies and dine out Italian often, as well as prepare it beautifully at home, and they absolutely loved Gigi's. From start to finish every dish we had (and we shared tastes of each other's dishes) was superb. The Cardoons are a must! But then again, I want to work my way through everything on the menu -- they all seem a must!"

  • "Despite our reservation, we were not able to be seated for 30+ minutes. The staff was apologetic, noting earlier diners lingering longer than expected. They seated us at a larger table, which proved to be fine. The bartender was very accommodating during our wait. The waitress was very attentive and helpful. We all ordered different dishes and all were pleased. I especially enjoyed the chicken saltimbocca, the best I have had outside Italy. My wife found the limoncello to be as excellent as described. We plan to return."

  • "I really enjoyed this restaurant. The atmosphere was quaint and romantic, the menu was well thought out (love the half portion option for the pastas), and the food was delicious. My husband and I try stuffed banana peppers everywhere we go, and I really enjoyed them because they tasted light and fresh which is hard to accomplish with a heavier dish. In fact all of the food had a wonderful light and fresh quality to me. You can see the regular many has plenty of choices, and there were a significant selection of daily specials as well. The server was a bit distracted, but still attentive. I will definitely return!"

  • "I love the food, the staff are always accommodating and friendly. Jackie the bartender is the best! She is friendly and recommends wines and she is very welcoming. Food reminds me of my grandmother and thats why I go there! I can't make sfinge!! Love everything else too, the fig pizza the chicken and mushroom cannoloni yum yum and the limoncello is the perfect end to a perfect meal. Thanks to Gigi's."

  • "After reading a lukewarm Buffalo News review, I went to GiGi's with some friends. The whole experience was wonderful ! We had artichoke fritters, cardone, and a stuffed artichoke for appetizers that were absolutely delicious. I had the rapini with sausage and fettuccini. My meal was as good as any I have had as were my friend's meals. Nobody had a bad meal. The tiramisu was decadent. Ten stars out of five. Delizioso Ci vediamo"

  • "Enjoyed the variety of good quality food including appetizers and desserts. Atmosphere was pleasant and comfortable and the service was friendly and efficient. One small issue is tight parking lot but additional street parking is available. Will definitely return in the future."

  • "I arrived at my reservation time of 5:30 pm. I was greeted warmly and although my other party did not arrive until a few minutes later I was not ignored. After my guests arrival, although we were engrossed in "Catch up" conversation the place began to fill up rapidly. The word was out and people began arriving. The atmosphere was vibrant and awesome We ordered the Sicilian appetizer plate and the cardones honestly were delicious. The bread they served us as well as the wine was very yummy !For my main meal I had the Ravioli with truffle and my friend had the Ravioli with pomodor sauce. Both were absolutely wonderful and to top off our evening we enjoyed a taramnisu! Cool, creamy and voila... delicious !"

  • "I really enjoy the food here. I especially love the warm bread with the herb oil dip and fava bean spread. The house salad is very good. We had specials for dinner and they were not as good as the usual menu items, but not much compares to the lamb which is delicious!"

  • "Gigi's is the perfect place to relax after a long work week. The atmosphere is relaxing even when it is very busy. The staff is extremely attentive yet does not intrude on conversation. The food is authentic, fresh and delicious and the wine list has all you need. Pasta, sandwiches, salads and apps (try the Cardoons!) are all high quality. The bar a Gigi's makes a statement and is always bustling with activity. It's U shape makes it the perfect place for conversation while you wait for your table and there is always plenty of converasation from the bartenders and patrons alike. I would highly recommend this spot for happy hour, dinner, lighter fare or a night cap."

  • "We love Gigi's ....this is Sicilian food taken to a whole new level. There is always a never-before-tasted treat to enjoy on the menu as well as inventive yet seriously delicious new Italian cocktails to try. And we can't wait for the St Joseph's Day Table - after all the chef (and her dad) wrote the book . And at least one person in your party HAS to have the lamb chop appetizer."

  • "Our new favorite! Loved everything! Nice seasonings with some pleasant surprises like fennel in the beet salad! Delish. And each time we have been our server brings a generous taste size appetizer. Nice touch! Nice selection of entrees and large yummy desserts- Well priced menu- great service-nice ambiance. Casual atmosphere but feels "special". Looking forward to warm weather to try the outdoor dining section."

  • "As a granddaughter of a native Italian, I grew up learning how to prepare and enjoy old-world recipes. Gigi's is one of a very few restaurants that serves delicious and authentic Italian dishes. All of the dishes we ordered were of excellent quality and they even serve "Sunday Sauce" if three or more people order. We plan to dine at Gigi's again very soon!"

  • "First time to Gigi's Cucina Povera. Was recommended by friend who is far deeper into the local restaurant scene than I. The food was very tasty, portion sizes ample enough for future leftovers. Tiramisu was out of this world! Service was decent. Questions regarding certain dishes were answered kindly and knowledgeably. Requested recommendations were helpful by server. Water refills came without having to ask. Environment was pleasant with a vibrant atmosphere where everyone appeared to be having a good time. Meal prices were mid-ranged and fairly priced for serving sizes. The bar area was occupied with a handful of patrons who look to have dropped in impromptu. Overall, I would recommend Gig's Cucina Povera and I plan on going back again."

  • "Warm, welcoming staff members are a highlight of the experience at Gigi's. Have dined here twice around the holidays. Food was of good quality, though for a few dishes, our family recipes for Sicilian specialties are a tad better (or perhaps just more familiar). One example was the sfingi, which were fried too dark and were limp and slightly greasy. Not nearly as good as our homemade sfingi at St. Joseph's Day. Soups were homemade and flavorful The dishes most enjoyed by our guests were veal (picatta), pork (scaloppine) and chicken (saltimbocca) dishes. The beef braciole was dry and disappointing. Overall, an enjoyable dining experience."

  • "I love it here! This is going to be our new first choice for an excellent meal with excellent service. The menu is diverse and yet has all the traditional homemade Italian/Sicilian comfort foods I grew up eating. The lamb is extraordinary. I've ordered it both times I visited and loved them more the second time! The pasta is delicious as well!"

  • "I have been to Gigi's twice now for dinner and everything was top notch on both occasions! Love the specialty drinks, the food menu, and the dinner specials. I would highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "This was our second time there and we were not as impressed with the food quality. It appears that the novelty has worn off. The restaurant was far less busy for a Saturday night. The braciole was the special and we found it dry, chewy and not very flavorful. The food quality seems inconsistent. Service was very good, attentive, and knowledgeable. Wines were average and moderately priced. As a culinary student, I noticed the chef sitting at the bar the entire night, shouldn't she be in the kitchen cooking and directing the kitchen staff? At the very least, she should have gone around the restaurant and engaged with the customers, there weren't that many! She got up from the bar, grabbed her coat, and left well before the restaurant closed."
