Had the pork sliders, and the zuchettes to start, followed by the tuna steak and rock fish, and we ended with key lime pie and the chocolate decadence.

The food and service were great and we toured the museum afterwards making it a wonderful way to spend the morning. Our waiter mentioned the "Afternoon Tea" that they do once a month and my daugthers and I are looking forward to trying that in June. Our server Elena was so professional and attentive to our groups needs. The cream of crab soup was smooth and delicious and the berry salad was fresh and chilled perfectly. All other diners enjoyed their meals as well. I have been here several times and have never had a bad experience. and attitude of the hostess was not. We actually left the restaurant last year when refused seating we thought would be more comfortable and suit our needs. We were pleased to that on May 3rd the host was very accomodating and the

And the oysters were perfection! My friend had the Grilled Cheese and soup, and all were delicious for her, especially the fries. We split the Creme Brulee sampler for dessert, but should have just ordered the regular vanilla bean brulee, as it was the best of the three (though the pistachio was pretty good). Sunday Brunch is a quintessential laid-back, jazzy affair with fabulous food. I've been to casual lunch in the sculpture garden and buisiness lunches under the tent -- John Shield's extensive, imaginative menu is always appropriate! BTW Shields was "doing" local and sustainable way before the trend kicked in - he incorporates his famed Chesapeake flavor into everything. I ordered the stuffed French toast, which was honestly just so-so. I wish that it had more of the cream cheese honey filling and the apples were cooked to mush. My boyfriend ordered the steak rancheros and he absolutely loved it. My aunt had the traditional crab cake with a side Caesar salad and she raved about it. We found that the table for two near the doorway to the kitchen was distracting from the ambiance. The constant sound of servers calling "corner" as they moved from dining room to kitchen was annoying and servers passing by the table and between seated guests created a situation where the guest seated on the outside of this table needed to look out for servers brushing up close against them.

Deserts were delicious as well. The only negative about Gertrude's are the maitre d. They are always very snobby. I had a reservation made on OpenTable, but maybe it didnt get into their system. In any case, she gave me an attitude of annoyance and boredom that was quite off-putting. During summer, the male maitre d' wouldnt let my group of 4 sit inside during the hot summer month because he said the tables were booked. There were about 6 empty tables inside we could have sat at. NO ONE sat at any of those tables during our entire 1.5 hour breakfast. When leaving, I asked the male maitre d' about it, and he said those spots are held for 3+ hrs per reservation. The service was excellent, but we did receive our brunch breads about the same time our entrees were served. I had a hamburger and had high expectations, this being Gertrude's and it was local beef, but it was just average and completely overcooked. (I ordered medium rare and it was very well done, I should have sent it back to the kitchen. Gertrude's had a great kids menu and the girls loved their lunch. Substitutions for fruit in place of fries were easily made.
