A word from Gertrude's
Gertrude's Restaurant, located inside the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), is where John Shields celebrates Chesapeake cuisine using local foods, in a warm and stylish setting. Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible. The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I both enjoyed the perfectly prepared trout dinner and $20 bottle of wine special on Tuesday night. The Berger Cookie cheesecake was also delicious. We have a summer tradition of Gertrude's on a Tuesday night. It was awesome as usual."

  • "Gertrude's is always a special treat, especially on a beautiful night when you can sit in the sculpture garden. The food was delicious. I had lots of out-of-town guests who all had the crab cakes. I had my favorite, the catfish. The cream of crab soup is fantastic! Can't wait to come back again."

  • "The food was very good. The decor was good but not great. But the prices were way too high. $23 for one crab cake? And then I had to pay for parking too? This place is way overpriced."

  • "We went to Gertrude's to enjoy their crab cakes and crab soup. I was not disappointed they were great. I also loved that as a side I could get a fresh fruit cup. As a bonus it is delightful to walk around the sculpture garden."

  • "I grew up on the eastern shore and have very high standards for crabcakes. The crabcakes at Gertrude's are fantastic - better than my own grandmother's!"

  • "This restaurant was recommended and I had out of town guests who appreciate art. Located in the Sculpture Garden of the Baltimore Museum of Art, lunch was outstanding. We were seated in the patio near a pond and where much of the sculpture was visible. The menu was so extensive it was hard to decide but one chosen, each of us had an wonderful lunch. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone and am looking forward to returning for dinner."

  • "Wonderful surroundings due to fountain and sculpture garden. Menu offerings covered a plethora of customizations, and the servers were helpful and accommodating. Food and beverages were generous and delicious. It was much appreciated to receive a mug rather than a cup of hot tea with a scrumptious dessert; and the half priced wines on Wednesdays were much enjoyed. A restaurant to come back to again and again."

  • "It's a nice place for small groups, however, they will not give separate checks."

  • "I love Gertrude's because it's such a beautiful place and most of all, it's QUIET enough to have conversation. This was a family reunion so we had a lot to talk about. This is an increasingly rare asset. The food was wonderful as well, and the service was unobtrusive and efficient. All in all, a great place for a family occasion!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at Gertrude's last Saturday. The food was presented invitingly anticipating the taste and enjoyment we received. David's service right on as was the auxiliary staff. A very gratifying experience."

  • "My wife had been to Gertrude's; I had not. She prepared me for a wonderful dining experience so I was not surprised at how wonderful all aspects of dinner was. Food and drink menus, service as it should be, and a beautiful setting - all better than I had expected. Yep, we'll be back."
    Dined on 8/8/2014
  • "When I made the reservation I said it was a birthday lunch and Gertrude's remembered. I didn't remind them but the special dessert and candle arrived on time. I was impressed and the birthday girl was surprised and happy. It was a lovely lunch."

  • "This was the most enjoyable outdoor dining experience we've had. The weather was perfect, the view of the sculpture garden was lovely and the sound of the water fountain provided a very special touch. We'll be back."

  • "The food is always good but not great. The presentations are OK. The atmosphere is wonderfully fun and alive. I love sitting outside, but I also I like the big glass windows inside. I find it a nice place to dine with girlfriends for a moderate dinner. I think they could be more creative and create more interesting flavors with their food."

  • "I realize that the restrooms are temporary due to construction but they are horrific. Our server seemed so very distracted and could not seem to remember when she asked if I wanted pepper and I said yes and then she walked away and I had to ask for it again. This is one of my favorite places so I will return but not until they get those restrooms straightened out."

  • "The construction at the museum means porto potties (and not clean ones) for Gertrude's. Food wasn't up to the usual standard. I was introducing 2 friends to Gertrude's. Not sure they'll return."

  • "We went for dinner with 6 people. The food was good, although not excellent. Steak, mashed potatoes and broccoli was all good, but plate needed some kind of sauce, moisture. Catfish was very good. However, service was slow. It was a busy night due to being restaurant week, but we definitely had to wait 25-30 minutes between courses. Otherwise a good meal."

  • "We went there with friends on Saturday night of restaurant week. First, the menu for the restaurant week was just okay. Not a lot of choices, which can be expected. My husband ordered the pork dish on the restaurant week menu and didn't realize how sweet it would be. He ate about half of the entree and then finished mine. I ordered the Salmon dish off the restaurant week menu. Out of our friends, one ordered the same dish I had, and the other ordered the stuffed tomato, which she liked. I don't know, it just seems like the dishes are not that great and seem prepared way ahead of time."

  • "We are regulars at Gertrude's and it's become our favorite restaurant in Baltimore. Spectacularly lovely setting in the sculpture garden of The Baltimore Art Museum. Wonderful food always perfectly prepared. Attentive and friendly servers, there when you want them. The Maitre D' is a gem, too. Gertrude's is where we love taking our clients and out of town guests. Don't miss it."

  • "John Shields' cuisine is a valentine to everything that is best about Maryland cuisine. The flavors are local and familiar, but elements are combined in fresh and lively ways--there's always a twist or surprise that gives you a new perspective on traditional ingredients like corn, tomatoes, and crab. And that mace cake is just plain wonderful! Thank you, John, for continuing to give our Mid Atlantic food traditions the respect they deserve."

  • "Gertrude's has consistently excellent food and service - and it's lovely to wander through the sculpture garden after lunch... I must say, though, that I look forward to the completion of the BMA construction (and I'm sure that Gertrude's staff does, too!)"
    Dined on 8/1/2014
  • "In spite of the construction at the BMA, Gertrude's has done a good job of making it an enjoyable experience. We dined at a table near the sculpture garden where it was the noise level was lower than in the restaurant. The service was excellent and the food was perfect. We will return to Gertrude's again and have recommended it to our friends."

  • "Brought two friends visiting from California. Everyone enjoyed it very much although I really believe the guests would have liked it even more if they had broadened their horizons somewhat and ordered something other than the Turkey burgers."

  • "As always, Gertrude's provided an excellent meal in a fine setting. The menu always has several fine options for me as a vegetarian. Great restaurant!"

  • "i had maryland crab soup, and crab cake du jour. it is my first experience to have maryland crab soup and crab cake so i dunno what they originally taste like. anyway i liked their soup! crab cake was okay but i wouldn't say it is very good. without sauce it is ordinary but with sauce it became better. but side menu coming with crab cake was not good...overall food was okay. service was also just okay. all restaurants I've been so far gave me drink menu first and then gave me menu. here was opposite. the thing i found annoying was their pace of serving. they served the crab cake like five minutes after having given me the soup. i hurriedly finish soup because i don't want my crab cake to get cold. but overall attitude was generally nice."

  • "Party of 5 and everyone off Gertie menu and was happy. Four got crab platter and liked it. One got catfish platter and although catfish moist, not a lot of taste. Waitress was attentive. Noise level in dining room at 7:30 was loud, so difficult to hear each other at the round table for 6."

  • "My wife and I got married at Gertrude's, so we may look at it through rose colored glasses. Recently we went on Tuesday for the $12 menu night. We both went in expecting the same delicious food in smaller serving than usual, etc. to account for the reduced price. That was not the case. Our portions were the usual size, more than any one person needs, and cooked to perfection. She had the Maryland pan fried chicken, which tasted just like Grandma used to make. Okay, a little better. Sorry Grandma! And I had the crab cake platter. As for ambience we were seated outside with a great view of the fountains. The staff is amazing, quick, helpful … present but not hovering. It felt like my wife and I were queens for the day."

  • " I have always found Gertrude's a wonderful place to dine. Most recently I had dinner with my daughter and a very close family friend. It was my daughter's first time at Gertrude's. Our very pleasant server, who usually worked brunch, was very good at answering most of my daughter's questions. For questions she could not answer, she went to the chef to obtain those answers. She quickly returned with those answers and was quite helpful with menu suggestions. We thoroughly enjoyed our food and the service. I regret that I cannot recall our superb server's name."
