Gertrude's Restaurant, located inside the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), is where John Shields celebrates Chesapeake cuisine using local foods, in a warm and stylish setting. Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible. The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.Continued

  • "I had the zuchettes. Gertrude's version of vegan crab cake bites. They were delish! While I have dined at this fine establishments many, many times, this was was first sojourn since becoming vegan. So, I was excited to find items on the menu catering to veganism. While not many, there were a few excellent choices. Brava John Shields!"

  • "despite the usual delicious single-fry oysters, found the food and service less satisfying than before. The Tuna entree--while rare--was dry; the special "shoulder" (beef) was unappetizing, although the root vegetables that accompanied it were spectacularly well cooked. The service -- well, our waiter simply stood in the far corner of the (almost empty) main room while (on three different occasions) we waved vigorously for what seemed like minutes at a time, trying to rouse him. And this was early on a Saturday evening!"

  • "We were a party of 5, and placed at a rectangular table, with no seating at either end. We asked to be placed at another table that was open, but the hostess said they try to leave open tables so as to not crowd diners. It was difficult to have a conversation. And the acoustics are poor so the noise level was VERY loud. We had to lean over table to have conversation. The waitress was fair, but the food was excellent. They offer excellent vegan dishes."

  • "Dinner was not as expected. We started off with a really nice Caesar Salad,then had an excessively long wait for our dinner plates even though the restaurant was not crowded. Those of us that ordered crab cakes were disappointed. The "Gertie" was made with what seemed to be mostly filler. I assumed this might be a great dish to order since they serve a crab cake of the day..maybe I should have ordered that one! The vegetable mix of the day was overcooked sautéed vegetables. My husband's loaded burger was excellent.I heard there might be renovations so I called ahead to check & was told the only thing different was the entrance. In fact, there are portable toilets for patroness. Our requested window table was in a very small end corner."

  • "Had brunch here with my boyfriend and parents before strolling through the museum. Had been here one other time, for dinner, about 18 months ago. We all loved our food! I had a scoop of ice cream for dessert and they brought it out with a candle--who doesn't love a candle on their birthday? Menu is full of local flavor and refreshing twists on old favorites."

The crab soup was good but needed a little oomph. As others have noted construction is not a bonus (porta potties, view, etc.). Will return when it's done."

  • "When I asked for greens instead of the fennel coleslaw with my Pulled Pork, the waiter said "I'm not sure, we may have to charge you" I expected him to return with the information. Since I'm allergic to fennel, I was unhappy to see a $4.00 charge on my bill for the little bowl of greens he brought....without confirming it would be an extra cost. If I'd known that, and the small portion size, I would have just accepted the coleslaw and given it one of my guests. Overall, we had a nice time, but this restaurant is very expensive for dinner, so won't be coming back any time soon. $24.00 for a crabcake is pretty outrageous in my opinion. $136 for 3 people is beyond my norm!!!"

  • "Ooops... While the food & service were very good I had no idea that construction/renovations were under way and hence the lovely view was completely obstructed. My date suggested I pick the venue & I was a bit embarrassed to say the least. Had I known of the situation I would have waited to make a reservation after renovations were completed. The maitre'd was kind enough to move our table so we had our backs to the exterior wall. The desert was outstanding; Berger cheesecake. Quite surprised the area that was tented was not covered so less of an eye-sore. ***Tried to shorten above to send to restaurant but was told "too long"."

  • "We went to Gertrude's mostly because we were in from out of town to watch our son's college game at nearby JHU. Found it on Yelp,m and are glad we did. Although in the BMA, it is a really cool place, something between funky and romantic, but very vibrant with lots of young people in for the happy hour scene (but stil good and quiet enough for two middle-agers like us!). The service was great (I think our waitress was Lindsay or Katherine, I'm not sure), and she was great...attentive, but not overly so, and very helpful with our wine and food selections. The whiskey flight was great, as were the oysters and kale and potatoe soup. When next in Baltimore, we'd surely come back."

  • "We went with a group to the March Wednesday Happy Hour. I had called the day before that we would be with about 10 people in the bar area. When we arrived it was very busy and a very large group was in the bar area already. Gertrudes was VERY nice and accommodated our group in the restaurant area for the Happy Hour. We all enjoyed the delicious cocktails and foods. Waiter was wonderful and patient with us."

  • "Gertrude's is still a very nice place to eat. However...I will not return until the construction at the BMA -- which also affects Gertrude's -- has been completed. Restaurant guests are required to use port-a-pots, and I am NOT the port-a-pot type. Although the pots were located at the top of a flight of stairs, and there were four stalls in the "room", a sink, etc., the odor in the space was still unmistakably the same as or worse than the odor in any one pot installation that I have used in the past. Yuck! No thanks! See ya later, Gertrude's!"

  • "I went for brunch as part of a group of three. First, the manager made table visits and seemed to really care that all the patrons at his establishment were having a great time. Two thumbs up. Everybody in our party commented that their food was delicious. One person ordered the crab meat/mushroom omelet, one person ordered the crab meat Benedict, and I ordered the black bean burger. It is difficult to find a bean burger in Baltimore that is vegan (as opposed to vegetarian) so, two thumbs up! Service was competent and friendly; we received our drinks and food in a timely manner. The ambiance is lovely, and if you are so inclined to view some art, the museum is literally right next door! I'll be going back, both for brunch and bar visits."

  • "If you're trying to have an intimate conversation with a dinner date, this may not be it. Maybe it would've been different with the outdoor seating, but indoors on a Saturday night there, the background noise of the other patrons combined with the hard surfaces acoustically and the fact that everyone is seated in really close proximity, amplifies the noise to that of school cafeteria levels. That said, the food was exceptional, the interior design is modern and well designed, the wait staff are friendly and accommodating. I just wish I didn't have to speak louder than normal conversation level. It almost felt like I was at a club or a packed TGI Friday's during happy hour."

  • "Came here with to celebrate my birthday. Didn't realize there was construction underway. That really took away from the ambiance. Plus there are portapotties (the nicer kind but still) set up as you walk towards the door. I ordered the monkfish medallions & cup of cream of crab soup. I had to add salt to both. I've eaten here in years past but the food was really bland this time. Afterwards I was treated by the restaurant with a complimentary scoop of I've cream with candle but really it was like an apple sauce sherbet inside what I'm guessing was a molasses-soaking waffle bowl and honey-drizzled plate. I'm starting to get the feeling that Gertrude's has switched to a salt-free, sugar-free menu. Def can't call comfort food."

  • "This has been a favorite of mine as the view of the sculpture garden is just so serene to enjoy. This time though, the noise level was really high and I found the food to be disappointing. We had a terrific waiter who was attentive. Perhaps the remodeling of BMA has affected the ambience a bit too."

  • "We've been here multiple times in the past for dinner, and were very disappointed with lunch. Everything was good, but for the prices they charge for lunch it should be excellent. The seafood salad had 2 scallops, 3 shrimp and some crab meat for $20. The gumbo was more couscous than sauce or meat. Even the service was at best mediocre. We will return, but only for dinner."

  • "We had a party of 12 and the waitress did a great job, took time to explain menu items and seemed to get everything correct. I had a crab cake, garlic spinach and udon noodles. All tasted great. My only disappointment was " a" crab cake. I only got one, it was small to medium. Of course it was so good I could have eaten five. But one is just not enough. Then came time to pay. 12 people one check, no separating of checks. What a mess trying to figure things out. It brought the entire experience down."

Following our meal, we made a quick visit to the museum, which was another fabulous benefit--the Cone Sister's Collection is AMAZING! The facility itself is under renovation, but the "under construction" ambience actually didn't detract that much from a very enjoyable experience. The menu centers around the flavors of the Chesapeake, and everyone in our party felt their meals were out of this world! Highly recommend."

  • "We have had brunch, lunch, and dinner here and have enjoyed all three. The seafood has been especially fresh and tastefully prepared, and the service has been efficient and attentive. Our only complaint has been desserts that add one two ingredient too many (cheesecake with chocolate cookies, etc.). The ice cream sundae, however, was more straighforward and delicious. We do not live in Baltimore, but do go to Gertrude's when we come up for vist to see a play or concert - and not just when going to the art museum. Very high value for a moderate price."
