Diner Reviews
  • "Our waiter seemed annoyed to have to wait on a large party."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "We had people coming in on airplanes and they were held up. No one seemed bothered by this and we were all able to be seated even though we were late. We certainly appreciated it."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "If you sit near the windows make sure you bring fly paper, flay swatter and a third hand to shoo them off your food."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Our friends recommended we have breakfast here before touring the gardens and they were so right. The meal was wonderful and relaxed."
    Dined on 4/10/2014
  • "Lots of good fresh choices and a nice atmosphere. Great lunch."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Somewhat limited dinner menu. Probably a better choice for lunch. Food was good, just not many true dinner choices. Very nice option if already visiting DBG. Not sure I would recommend as a special trip if not visiting the Garden."
    Dined on 4/9/2014
  • "Expected more ambience & a more imaginative menu. Very crowded due to exhibit. A bit pricey for a hamburger."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Greeting poor. Hostesses sloppy looking. Long banquette uneven and not versatile. Table not level and rocked back and forth. One appetizer (mussels)was underdone. Service was relatively prompt. With a partial "display kitchen", it would be good to tell the 4 line cooks (overstaffed?) to stay out of sight if they're going to idle and shoot the breeze. Restrooms way too far away. The experience didn't measure up to the hype. Would recommend only with caveats."

  • "Our service was excellent. Dominick at the bar was knowledgeable and helpful. We were enjoying ourselves so much that we decided to remain at the bar instead of taking a table. Our food was good. . We thought the wines and beers were priced a little high. Overall experience was good enough that. we might go back but only if we were visiting the Garden."

  • "I was expecting to food to be quite a bit better considering the type of ingredients in the entrees. Both entrees on the table looked delicious but didn't come through with the favors that matched the presentation. I got the signature entree of the 3 napkin sandwich. I loved the pickled apple and onions but was quite dry even after it was dipped in the sauce. Mahi tacos were they same looked great but lacked the flavor. Atmosphere was good and server was very nice and helpful."

  • "A great gem in the desert--The Desert Botanical Gardens, that is. Very good for lunch or dinner especially if you are visiting the Garden. Definitely make reservations on weekend nights. Wonderful patio seating, but not under the trees which are blooming right now. We had lots of yellow flowers falling on us. There's a large bar and the inside seating is very noisy. Glad we were outside. Limited entrees, but lots of salads and sandwiches."

  • "Good food, good service. Not pleased the waiter did not ask how the bill could be separated"

  • "....especially during peak season. Gertrude's at Desert Botanical Garden is a great place to eat. Indoor and outdoor dining. Lots of food options including some gluten-free and vegetarian options. The sandwiches we selected were very good; and the wait staff was excellent. I look forward to another visit."

  • "We found Gertrude's delightful. The food was fresh, cooked to perfection and delicious (as well as very healthy). The atmosphere was joyous and energized; perfect for the evenings' event. We would dine here again and again."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "Great restaurant. We went with friends and all 4 of us were very impressed. We all had different entree's and we were all very pleased."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "After reading other's reviews we had higher expectations of Gertrude's than what we experienced. The atmosphere was loud and Chaotic as we sat inside (not our preference). The food was good, just not great. I had the salmon dish, salmon was a bit over cooked, my partner had the chicken. The chicken was good, mashed potatoes were marginal...Gertrude's reminded me of a typical museum restaurant, loud, chaotic, bright. It would be a good lunch spot while you are at the garden but if you go for dinner, dont expect a nice, quaint dinner in the garden."

  • "Very nice setting. We sat outside on the patio and could look at the plants and cactus. The noise level was right for us, as we didn't have to raise our voices to have a conversation. The service was average. We had to stop a server other than ours, because our meals were delivered and we found that we had no knives to cut our entrees with. Parts of my entree were lukewarm and others were hot. The asparagus was way overcooked. Nevertheless, I'd go back, probably for lunch instead of dinner."

  • "Great place to rest and recharge with good food and great drinks while visiting the DBG."

  • "Small menu but good selection with excellent and friendly service. It was noisy and not intimate; could clearly hear neighboring table's conversation. The tables were not especially close."

  • "The ingredients are top notch for both the food and the drinks. We enjoyed brunch immensely. The staff was in great spirits and the food was delicious!"

  • "Five for lunch and only one indicated there meal was just 'OK'. The others did not like the food. Three hated the hot dog The beat salad did was not good at all The chicken sandwich had real 'kick back' later."

  • "Gertrude's is located at the main gate of the Botanical Gardens in Phoenix. It is a prefect destination to have a fantastic breakfast before going in and seeing all the great desert plant life. They open an hour before the gardens so you can have a nice quite breakfast and then go in and tour around. They also serve lunch and if it is anything like the breakfast menu, it would be fantastic as well. The banana bread french toast was awesome and the wife had the Quiche which was great as well. We will do it again and probably make it a regular trip."

  • "Attend a late lunch/very early dinner while awaiting sunset during the Chihuly in the Gardens show. 4 women totally enjoyed the ambience, food, and excellent service."

  • "Reserving through Open Table did not allow us to choose an outdoor table which is the benefit of a restaurant in a botanical garden, we discovered when we got there. The hostess was very inflexible and put some walk-in guests at the table we asked for near the door to the patio. The noise inside was absolutely overpowering - no acoustic buffering at all - we had to lean in, cup our ears, shout to hear each other across a small table. The food was excellent, the waitress very nice but it was not a pleasant experience at all. I have been there for lunch when it did does seem quieter but I can't recommend it for a relaxing evening."

  • "What a convient way to take a little break from the cactus, enjoy good food and conversation. MUST have a reservation during the Chihuly exhibit"

  • "My experience at Gertrude's was delightful. We had reservations & were seated within 3 minutes of arriving on time. The server David was awesome: friendly, knowledgeable & efficient. Our feast was fresh & rich. There were so many textures, flavors & colors. The atmosphere, furnishings and lighting contributed to a relaxing dining experience despite the restaurant being busy."

  • "It is a wonderful place to dine if you are visiting the Botanical Gardens. The menu is very varied and the food is well prepared. We were not rushed and it was quite relaxing. The deserts are home made and delicious."

  • "Excellent food atmosphere and waitstaff!! Busy so be sure to make a reservation in advance...especially on the second Tuesday of each month as that is free admission day to The Desert Botanical Garden.....A double treat!! Be sure to try the beet salad...it is outstanding. .."

  • "We arrived when it was light and could view the gardens, had a delicious dinner and then saw the Chihuly exhibit lit up at night. What a gorgeous experience! Our dining experience was excellent. Sat outdoors, nice wine, great food and service."

  • "1st time, food was good. Inside area was very noisy and hot. The 1st 90 degree day and the doors were open, not all of us enjoy the heat."
    Dined on 4/8/2014
  • "We had such a memorable afternoon and evening with friends from CO. The restaurant was such a nice complement to the Botanic Garden and the Chihuly Glass exhibit. Had no idea that such a nice venue existed at the garden. We will be back for sure!"

  • "I've been there several times but always during the day I would like to try the Dinner and Brunch menus as well. Will definitely be there for Chihuly after Dark in a couple of weeks. Always friendly and helpful service. They accommodated my mother who uses a scooter to get around and made her very comfortable."

  • "Menu descriptions make your mouth water, but belie actuality. Food was OK, but not great, and all 4 of us, with 4 different orders, thought it rather bland."

  • "When visiting the botanical gardens, be sure to eat at the convenient Gertrude's."
    Dined on 4/7/2014
  • "I asked for a table with a nice view and we were put in a corner. The room was so noisy I couldn't hear my friend talking much of the time. The fish taco was OK but bland."
    Dined on 4/7/2014
  • "The setting for this restaurant at the Desert Botanical Gardens is lovely. Just make sure you request a table outside. The indoor area was extremely noisy when we were there for dinner, and the service was very slow and inattentive."

  • "We made an evening at the Botantical Gardens and wanted to see the Chihully Exhibit in the dark with the lights. We were able to explore the gardens in daylight, have a nice sit down dinner with our family and then see the exhibit as the sun set. The exhibit was truly spectacular. We had good food and service and our waiter was attentive to our 7 and 9 year old grandsons; bringing their food in a timely fashion."
