Diner Reviews
  • "Food good, not great, but prices high for what you get."

  • "Gertrude's is a delight. The staff was friendly and relaxed. The champagne was dreamy and the food was delicious and the menu creative."

  • "The food at Gertrude's is presented beautifully and is very delicious. The portions are very small and prices are very high. We had a salad and entree and left hungry. The inside dining room was very noisy. Our server was great, but overall it is not a good value. We dined there on a Tuesday evening after vising the Chihuly in the Garden exhibit. "

  • "We like the ambiance of the outdoor area better than indoors. We enjoyed the cheese and bread appetizers and loved the raspberry puree. While the menu had a lot of standard fare (burgers, taco's, salad, sandwiches, etc.) the specials were truly special. We each ordered one of the specials and they were all delicious: pasta puttanesca, risotto with beets, fish of the day. Someone in our party ordered the fig manhattan but sent it back because she found it too strong (she does drink manhattans) and did not have any fig taste which is why she ordered it. "

  • "Gertrude's is a great idea, but fails in its execution. Service was slow and our waiter seemed irritated to be waiting on us. The food was great but a little over priced for what you actually receive. It makes itself seem like a fancy restaurant, but the ambience does not match up."

  • "Great wine. We all had chicken or their delicious Nimen burgers"

  • "After a walk through the Gardens, dinner at Gertrude's was a delightful treat. Our server, Bradley, was friendly and efficient and the food was excellent."

  • "It was very loud in the restaurant and hard to have a conversation. We had to ask for water twice before getting any brought to our table. The food was good."

  • "The atmosphere is nice, but tends to be on the noisey side. Food is very creative and adventurous. I love the fact that locally grown ingredients are used. My only complaint is the service, based on several visits.......there seems to be sufficient help, however the "help" seems to disappear off & on during our dining during lunch and/or dinner. Somehow I am hoping this problem will be addressed in the near future. "

  • "I secured a reservation online, which was very easy & within 15 min of my request. We arrived (this time) for an early patio dinner (before Chihuly), so I didn't notice the bar activity, but it is beautiful. Gertrude's never disappoints ... food, service, scenery & umbrella'd patio seating are great! My salmon salad was amazing & my husband also enjoyed his seafood entree . Before strolling Chihuly, we topped off our meal with the delicious citrus cheesecake (enough for 2). Our visitors are also impressed with the unexpected serene, desert setting."

  • "Food was overcooked, server was slow and inattentive. Outdoor dining at the garden makes it almost worth it."

  • "Gertrude's is the cafe at the Phoenix Botanical Garden. A great place and Gertrude's provides a great dining experience. We had breakfast which was terrific, from the fritata to the quiche to the scone everything was just about perfect. Eggs Benedict is one of my favorite breakfasts and these were the best I've ever had (note: very non-traditional)."

  • "Nestled conveniently in the Desert Botanical Gardens, Gertrudes offers a unique dining experience in Phoenix. We ate here the other evening, and it could not have been more spectacular - moon rise, perfect weather, great food. Most in our party started with the beet salad with goat cheese. The portions are generous and nearly everyone cleared their plates. We split an order of smothered fries with the entire table which was a great counterbalance to the greens on the salad! Highlights were the roast chicken, the halibut, the green chili bowls and the short ribs. Our waiter was very helpful in pointing out what he thought was best on the menu. A must try if you are in the area - reservations strongly suggested."

  • "Recommended by a friend and lived up to expectations. Presentation of entrees was outstanding. Server was extremely knowledgeable of all dishes ordered by our party - Kudos to Meredith."

  • "We had out-of-town guests who were experiencing the Garden for the first time. I made the reservation in advance on-line for 6:30 Sunday evening and requested an outside table. I received a confirmation e-mail. When we arrived at 6:25, we were told that they were running behind and it would be about 15 minutes. After about 20 minutes we were told that there was a table available inside, but we wanted outside, and I mentioned that my reservation had been confirmed online."

  • "Our waiter seemed annoyed to have to wait on a large party."

  • "We had people coming in on airplanes and they were held up. No one seemed bothered by this and we were all able to be seated even though we were late. We certainly appreciated it."

  • "If you sit near the windows make sure you bring fly paper, flay swatter and a third hand to shoo them off your food."

  • "Our friends recommended we have breakfast here before touring the gardens and they were so right. The meal was wonderful and relaxed."

  • "Lots of good fresh choices and a nice atmosphere. Great lunch."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Somewhat limited dinner menu. Probably a better choice for lunch. Food was good, just not many true dinner choices. Very nice option if already visiting DBG. Not sure I would recommend as a special trip if not visiting the Garden."

  • "Expected more ambience & a more imaginative menu. Very crowded due to exhibit. A bit pricey for a hamburger."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Greeting poor. Hostesses sloppy looking. Long banquette uneven and not versatile. Table not level and rocked back and forth. One appetizer (mussels)was underdone. Service was relatively prompt. With a partial "display kitchen", it would be good to tell the 4 line cooks (overstaffed?) to stay out of sight if they're going to idle and shoot the breeze. Restrooms way too far away. The experience didn't measure up to the hype. Would recommend only with caveats."

  • "Our service was excellent. Dominick at the bar was knowledgeable and helpful. We were enjoying ourselves so much that we decided to remain at the bar instead of taking a table. Our food was good. . We thought the wines and beers were priced a little high. Overall experience was good enough that. we might go back but only if we were visiting the Garden."

  • "I was expecting to food to be quite a bit better considering the type of ingredients in the entrees. Both entrees on the table looked delicious but didn't come through with the favors that matched the presentation. I got the signature entree of the 3 napkin sandwich. I loved the pickled apple and onions but was quite dry even after it was dipped in the sauce. Mahi tacos were they same looked great but lacked the flavor. Atmosphere was good and server was very nice and helpful."

  • "A great gem in the desert--The Desert Botanical Gardens, that is. Very good for lunch or dinner especially if you are visiting the Garden. Definitely make reservations on weekend nights. Wonderful patio seating, but not under the trees which are blooming right now. We had lots of yellow flowers falling on us. There's a large bar and the inside seating is very noisy. Glad we were outside. Limited entrees, but lots of salads and sandwiches."

  • "....especially during peak season. Gertrude's at Desert Botanical Garden is a great place to eat. Indoor and outdoor dining. Lots of food options including some gluten-free and vegetarian options. The sandwiches we selected were very good; and the wait staff was excellent. I look forward to another visit."

  • "We found Gertrude's delightful. The food was fresh, cooked to perfection and delicious (as well as very healthy). The atmosphere was joyous and energized; perfect for the evenings' event. We would dine here again and again."

  • "Great restaurant. We went with friends and all 4 of us were very impressed. We all had different entree's and we were all very pleased."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "After reading other's reviews we had higher expectations of Gertrude's than what we experienced. The atmosphere was loud and Chaotic as we sat inside (not our preference). The food was good, just not great. I had the salmon dish, salmon was a bit over cooked, my partner had the chicken. The chicken was good, mashed potatoes were marginal...Gertrude's reminded me of a typical museum restaurant, loud, chaotic, bright. It would be a good lunch spot while you are at the garden but if you go for dinner, dont expect a nice, quaint dinner in the garden."

  • "Very nice setting. We sat outside on the patio and could look at the plants and cactus. The noise level was right for us, as we didn't have to raise our voices to have a conversation. The service was average. We had to stop a server other than ours, because our meals were delivered and we found that we had no knives to cut our entrees with. Parts of my entree were lukewarm and others were hot. The asparagus was way overcooked. Nevertheless, I'd go back, probably for lunch instead of dinner."

  • "Small menu but good selection with excellent and friendly service. It was noisy and not intimate; could clearly hear neighboring table's conversation. The tables were not especially close."

  • "Gertrude's is located at the main gate of the Botanical Gardens in Phoenix. It is a prefect destination to have a fantastic breakfast before going in and seeing all the great desert plant life. They open an hour before the gardens so you can have a nice quite breakfast and then go in and tour around. They also serve lunch and if it is anything like the breakfast menu, it would be fantastic as well. The banana bread french toast was awesome and the wife had the Quiche which was great as well. We will do it again and probably make it a regular trip."
